IPL 2023 Sets New Record With 1,300 Crore Views on JioCinema in the First Five Weeks

JioCinema continues to set global benchmarks in the world of digital sports viewing for IPL 2023 as it clocked over 1,300 crore video views in the first five weeks of the cricket tournament. Viewers were glued to JioCinema’s fan-centric presentation as the average time spent per viewer per match touched 60 minutes. TATA IPL 2023 on digital streaming has reached twice the number of viewers on HD TV. “JioCinema continues to grow from strength to strength every week and it is based on clear evidence of consumer’s outright preference of catching the TATA IPL on digital,” said Viacom18 Sports CEO Anil Jayaraj.

“The combination of outstanding cricket action and our robust platform proved the stellar opening weekend was just the beginning of bigger things to come. I would like to thank all our sponsors, advertisers, and partners for showing faith in our journey as we continue to elevate every fan’s TATA IPL viewing experience, ” added Jayaraj. JioCinema breached the peak concurrency records of IPL twice in a span of five days. On April 12th, the platform clocked a 2.23 crore peak viewership during the Chennai Super Kings vs Rajasthan Royals match. Five days later, during the Royal Challengers Bangalore vs Chennai Super Kings fixture, JioCinema broke the record again with a concurrency of 2.4 crore.

After the response, JioCinema released a 360-degree viewing feature, showcasing the power of immersive fan engagement on digital. Viewers can also view IPL in different language feeds including Bhojpuri, Punjabi, Marathi, and Gujarati and digital-only features like Multi-cam, 4K and Hype Mode, Other features and content includes highlights, and top player interviews including Virat Kohli, Hardik Pandya, Faf Du Plessis, Rashid Khan, David Miller through partnerships with IPL teams.

The number of advertisers on JioCinema who have signed up is also a new record as is the revenue booked, both significantly higher than last year on digital. The list of brands joining the digital bandwagon is expected to grow further. Viewers can continue to watch their preferred sports by downloading JioCinema (iOS & Android). Notably, JioCinema also recently secured a deal to bring Warner Bros. Discovery content including HBO shows to the platform. This is likely to go live sometime in May, with JioCinema also expected to switch to a subscription-based model after the conclusion of IPL 2023.

JioCinema Sets New Viewership Record of 24 Million Views During RCB vs CSK IPL Match

JioCinema has broken its own record of viewership, with the viewership during the Chennai Super Kings vs Royal Challengers Bangalore match crossing 24 million. This is, so far, the highest viewership for any match in the current IPL 2023 season, with JioCinema breaking its own previous record of 22 million which was set on April 12. In the last over of the second innings of the match, the number of viewers on Jio Cinema reached 24 million. Chennai Super Kings won the thrilling match by 8 runs.

The BCCI awarded TV and digital broadcasting rights of the Tata IPL 2023 to different companies, and digital is seeing its direct benefit. JioCinema is streaming IPL matches for free this season for all, as the streaming platform does not have a subscription model as of now. This has further helped in bolstering IPL’s viewership through the growing popularity of digital streaming. Additionally, JioCinema has also improved the quality of the stream from this season, offering the IPL 2023 stream in up to Ultra-HD resolution for all matches, as well as offering multiple languages for commentary and graphics, and different user-selectable camera angles.

The achievement of 24 million viewers is particularly impressive, given that the final match of the 2019 season recorded the highest viewership on Disney Hotstar at 18.6 million, prior to JioCinema’s entry into the segment. IPL is currently in its league stage and as of now, JioCinema has broken all previous viewership records for the tournament. As the IPL moves towards the finals, the number of viewers on JioCinema is likely to increase further. The company claims that millions of new viewers are connecting to IPL daily through its streaming app.

The streaming service is expected to start charging a subscription fee following the conclusion of IPL 2023, and has also announced a massive film and web series slate of content set to come to the streaming platform in the coming months. The platform was also the streaming partner for the 2022 FIFA World Cup, although securing the rights for IPL has been a significant boost for JioCinema given India’s preference for cricket over other sports.

JioCinema Sees Record 1.47 Billion Digital Views, 50 Million App Downloads on Opening Weekend

The broadcasting joint venture of Indian conglomerate Reliance Industries said on Monday its JioCinema app saw a record 1.47 billion digital video views on the opening weekend of the Indian Premier League (IPL) cricket tournament, as well as 50 million mobile app downloads.

The number of video viewers for the IPL weekend eclipsed what was recorded across the entire last season of IPL on digital, said Viacom18, which is part of Network18 – the media unit owned by Mukesh Ambani’s Reliance.

Viacom18 won digital streaming rights from 2023 to 2027, for 237.58 billion Indian rupees ($2.89 billion), which Disney previously held.

On the other hand, Disney-owned Star India which is the official TV broadcaster of the IPL, the world’s richest cricket league, said it saw a total of 8.7 billion minutes of consumption on television for the opening match on Friday between defending champions Gujarat Titans and Chennai Super Kings.

A peak attendance of 16 million viewers was recorded on JioCinema during the match, Viacom18 said.

The landscape for content consumption has increasingly moved “to digital and JioCinema performance this week is the biggest evidence of it,” Viacom18 Sports Chief Executive Officer Anil Jayaraj said in a statement.

Disney Star said in a separate statement that it was witnessing “continuing dominance” of linear Television as the preferred platform for uninterrupted viewing of live cricket.

The comments indicate heated rivalry between Reliance and Disney, which are aiming for a major slice of advertisement revenue at a time when channels are seeing increased spending to push viewership, with advertisers cutting back on spending due to an inflationary environment.

IPL 2023 Begins on March 31 in India: All You Need to Know

Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023 begins on March 31 in India, with the BCCI-run tournament returning to its traditional home-away stadium format this year after modifications and venue changes were implemented in its previous editions during the COVID-19 pandemic. The popular league cricket tournament, which includes 10 teams fighting to become champions, is currently in its 16th edition and sees Gujarat Titans return as defending champions. Notably for viewers, there are major changes to the streaming experience, with JioCinema taking over as the streaming platform for IPL from 2023 onwards.

IPL 2023: Tournament format, dates, and timings

IPL 2023 will follow the traditional league format for much of the tournament, with each team playing every other team once at home, and once away. The four top teams after the league stage will progress to the playoffs, where the first and second-placed teams have a distinct advantage over the third and fourth-placed teams.

The IPL 2023 will take place from March 31 to May 28, with the final set to take place in Ahmedabad, Gujarat — the home venue of the defending champions Gujarat Titans. During the league stage, teams will play primarily at their traditional home venues, although some matches are scheduled to take place in Guwahati, Assam and Dharamshala, Himachal Pradesh as denoted home venues for Rajasthan Royals and Punjab Kings respectively.

League stage matches will take place every day (at least one match per day) from March 31 to May 21, with most matches starting at 7:30pm. However, some matches will start at 3:30pm, so keep a look out for the specific schedule of your favourite team.

IPL 2023: How to watch

There is a big change to how IPL 2023 can be watched, as compared to previous editions of the tournament. With streaming rights changing hands and Viacom18 securing the rights, matches in 2023 will be broadcast on JioCinema, which is available on multiple platforms including smartphones, tablets, smart televisions, and streaming devices, as well as the low-cost JioPhone feature phones.

Interestingly, JioCinema is streaming the entire IPL 2023 tournament at up to Ultra-HD resolution, with numerous other improvements to the viewing experience, such as the ability to change camera angles and languages, being implemented. The app will also provide access to statistics and virtual reality implementations on supported devices.

Viewers will be happy to note that JioCinema is currently accessible free of charge to all, with no subscription plan required and the app free to download on all platforms. JioCinema was the streaming platform for the 2022 FIFA World Cup and drew criticism for poor performance and technical issues then, but it’s possible that these issues will be ironed out ahead of IPL 2023 to ensure proper viewing.

Television viewers also have an option to watch IPL 2023 on traditional cable and DTH connections, with the Star Sports network retaining the TV broadcast rights for IPL going into 2023. However, viewers with access to smart TVs and reliable Internet connections are promised a better experience with JioCinema, particularly the higher resolution and app-based features such as camera angles and 12 Indian languages for commentary and on-screen graphics.
