Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 Gets New Game Plus, More Suits and a Developer Menu Bug That Hints at DLC in New Update

Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 has received the version 1.002.000 update, finally bringing the much-requested New Game+ mode, new suits for the two heroes, and a host of new quality-of-life features. The latest patch also adds the ability to replay missions, change the in-game time of day, and some handy accessibility options. The Spider-Man 2 update, however, has also brought an unintended bug. Developer Insomniac Games confirmed that the patch could grant players access to a development game menu, which could end up impacting save files and trophy progress.

Insomniac detailed the new features in the version 1.002.000 release notes on Thursday, confirming that the update was live for PS5 users. The highlight, of course, is the New Game+ mode, which allows players who have completed the game to dive right back into the story with all their skill and gear upgrades intact.

NG+ on Spider-Man 2 will come with Ultimate Levels, allowing players to go beyond the base game level cap in the mode. New Game+ will also unlock new symbiote suit styles with Ultimate Level progression in the story, new golden looks for gadgets, a shared Suit Tech slot for the two Spider-Men, and for the trophy hunters out there — a new PlayStation trophy for completing the game in NG+ mode.

Players can also now replay specific mission from the story and change the time of day in the game. This can be done by heading to ‘Time of Day’ in the Gameplay section of the Settings menu. Additionally, players can also swap out symbiote tendril colours to their liking.

The update also brings new Spider-Man suits, including two new suits inspired by the Hellfire Gala designs for both Peter and Miles. The two heroes will also get two new suits as part of the Fly N’ Fresh suit pack — these will be paid suits, available for $4.99, with the proceeds going towards Gameheads, a games industry training program for low-income youth in the US.

Other new features include photo mode tweaks, audio descriptions for in-game cinematics, screen reader for text on menu, tutorials, and control hints, and more. You can refer to the full list of features in Insomniac’s release notes.

Insomniac Games also confirmed in a post on X Thursday that the update could let some players access a developer menu, which could lead to save file and trophy progress corruption. “We’re aware the latest game update may have inadvertently allowed access to a development game menu. There’s a hotfix on the way,” the studio said.

Some players, however, seem to have dived into the developer options and reportedly found references to missions that aren’t present in the game, which could hint at an upcoming DLC. While Insomniac has not yet confirmed a story-based expansion for the game, Spider-Man 2 features a few open-ended story threads that could be explored later in a DLC. 2018’s Marvel’s Spider-Man also received a story expansion, The City That Never Sleeps.

Players can now download the latest 1.002.000 update on PS5. Insomniac has noted that there’s a second update that immediately follows the first one and players would need to download both to access all the new features.

PlayStation Black Friday Sale 2023: God of War Ragnarök, Assassin’s Creed Mirage, Resident Evil 4, More

PlayStation launched its annual Black Friday Sale, late last week, offering discounts of up to 70 percent on key titles on the PS4 and PS5. The promotion is live across some first, but largely third-party releases, and is slated to end November 28 on the digital storefront. God of War Ragnarök is a standout among the catalogue, available at a 38 percent discount for Rs. 3,099, tasking Kratos and Atreus on a journey to the Nine Realms to prevent the prophesied apocalypse. PS Plus Premium/ Deluxe members also get a three-hour free trial period, in case you feel like testing the waters. Those who only own an old-gen PS4, however, can opt for the dedicated version at Rs. 2,279.

Meanwhile, its prequel God of War’s Digital Deluxe Edition will set you back by Rs. 999 at a 50 percent discount. The Last of Us Part I, a remake of the beloved post-apocalyptic zombie-killing game, at is available at Rs. 3,099 (38 percent off) for the PS5 — its sequel hasn’t received a discount. And of course, you can reach out to local retailers to acquire a physical copy of the same, which costs Rs. 2,499. In the same undead vein, you could also pick up Resident Evil 4 remake and step into the shoes of pretty-boy cop Leon S. Kennedy as he ventures into a ghoulish Spanish village to rescue the President’s daughter from bizarre cultists. It is available at a 43 percent discount for Rs. 2,279.

Assassin’s Creed Mirage Review

The newest Assassin’s Creed title also makes it way its way to the Black Friday sale. After three open-world RPG focussed titles, Ubisoft has taken a back-to-basics approach with the franchise in Assassin’s Creed Mirage, set in ninth-century Baghdad with a focus on stealth and crafty assassinations. Released last month, AC Mirage is listed at Rs. 2,799 after a 20 percent price drop.

Fighting game fans have two choices to pick from — Street Fighter 6 and Mortal Kombat 1. The former takes a vibrant turn, adding some RPG elements into the mix akin to the Persona games and a career-forming story mode that’s reminiscent of Yakuza. Street Fighter 6 also adds a Modern Control pattern, bridging the gap between old schoolers and newbies to the genre — the standard edition costs Rs. 2,239 after a 44 percent discount. Conversely, Mortal Kombat 1 marks another reboot of the franchise, after Liu Kang achieved godhood and altered the timeline to ensure peace in the lands. It’s listed for Rs. 3,359 — 30 percent off — and is perfect for those who enjoy some super-cool cinematics to go along with their fatal combos.

Speaking of cinematics, Final Fantasy XVI is also on sale, with its narrative-driven action RPG experience offering ability-based combat and slick cutscenes. The game tosses you into the war-torn lands of Valisthea to prevent the source of all magic, Aether, from fading away, by engaging in large-scale cinematic Eikon battles that ditch the franchise’s long-running turn-based combat. FF16 goes up for Rs. 2,879.

Final Fantasy XVI Review

Harry Potter fans could step into the enchanted hallways of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry and tap into ancient magic while juggling between responsibilities like attending classes, exploring the dense Forbidden Forest, crafting potions, and fighting Dark Wizards. Hogwarts Legacy is up for Rs. 2,399 on the PS4 and Rs. 2,639 on the PS5. The Black Friday discounts will please Star Wars fans, too, who can continue Jedi Knight Cal Kestis’ story and take on the oppressive Empire in the acclaimed souls-like Star Wars Jedi: Survivor for Rs. 2,699. For a more authentic souls-like experience, you could consider picking up the recently released Lies of P, where you take control of Pinocchio in a twisted Belle Epoque setting to rid the gothic town of Krat from pestilence. The game comes in at Rs. 3,039 on both PS4 and PS5 after discount.

Sports fans can get their annual dose of arcade football experience through EA Sports FC 24 at Rs. 2,249, or pick up NBA 2K24, the latest entry in the acclaimed basketball series, at Rs. 2,499.

Sony Locks Dates for Two Untitled Marvel Movies for 2024 and 2025

Sony Pictures has locked dates for two untitled Marvel movies in the coming years. One of them is labelled ‘untitled Sony/Marvel,’ slated to release November 8, 2024, while the other is marked as ‘untitled Sony/Marvel live-action,’ on track for June 27, 2025. For now, it’s up for speculation what these movies could be, but Venom 3 and the Tom Holland-led Spider-Man 4 are among the top candidates. It’s also worth noting that the former slot does not specify a live-action format, so it could mean that Sony is planning more animated projects after the successful Spider-Verse movies.

The first Sony/Marvel movie — set for November 8 — has a clear runway for two weeks, after which it will compete with Paramount’s Gladiator sequel on November 22, 2024. Meanwhile, the second entry will be in direct competition with Dwayne Johnson’s live-action Moana movie on June 27, 2025 — the latter was recently moved up by a week in Disney’s calendar shake-up. Going by recent rumours of a Halloween release window, the first slot could also be filled by Venom 3, whose star Juno Temple (Ted Lasso) confirmed in a recent interview that filming was scheduled to start ‘very, very soon’. Taking the ongoing Hollywood writers’ strike into account which is delaying production, this seems like a fair assumption.

It’s clear that Sony is looking to expand its Spider-Man universe, even transporting Tom Hardy’s Eddie Brock/ Venom into the Marvel Cinematic Universe, during a mid-credits scene in Venom: Let There Be Carnage. The studio has multiple storylines in the works with solid release dates: the Aaron Taylor-Johnson-led Kraven the Hunter (October 6), Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse (March 29, 2024), Bad Bunny’s El Muerto (January 12, 2024), and Madame Web (February 16, 2024) starring Dakota Johnson in the lead. Reports from earlier this year also confirmed some Spider-Man live-action TV series to be in development, including Spider-Man Noir and Silk: Spider Society. They will be available for streaming on Amazon Prime Video in the future.

Moreover, producer Amy Pascal confirmed recently that the fourth Spider-Man film with Holland and Zendaya has paused development due to the writers’ strike. “Are we going to make another movie? Of course, we are,” she told Variety, late last month. “We’re in the process, but with the writers’ strike, nobody is working during the strike. We’re all being supporters and whenever they get themselves together, we’ll get started.” Its lead Holland is already eight months into his one-year break from acting, so if the strike ends within the next couple of months, the timing for his return couldn’t be more appropriate. Finally, let’s not ignore the live-action Miles Morales film that’s already in the works at Sony Pictures — coming off the heels of Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse’s successful release, which surpassed its prequel Into the Spider-Verse’s total gross within just 12 days. The sequel has earned $412.5 million (about Rs. 3,378 crore) at the global box office.

There’s only one Turkish and Spanish title. The former is called Hidden and will be available July 21 on Disney+ Hotstar. The latter, called Santa Evita, doesn’t have an exact release date as yet. The Korean and Turkish series will be available in their original languages, as well as in Hindi, Tamil, and Telugu dubs. English subtitles only. Dubs are free — you don’t need a subscription.

Over in the world of sports, the 2022 edition of Wimbledon — the flagship British tennis tournament and the only Grand Slam on grass — continues through the first 10 days of July. Novak Djokovic is looking to defend his men’s singles title, while the women’s singles will have a new winner as the defending champion retired. There are also two Formula 1 races in July 2022 on Disney+ Hotstar, with one in the UK and the other in Austria. And lastly, in hockey, the 2022 Women’s World Cup runs from July 1–17 in Spain and Netherlands. India is in Pool B alongside England, China, and New Zealand.
