US falls to Mexico for the second time ever, losing 2-0 in the Women’s Gold Cup

Mexico beat the United States for the second time ever, getting goals from Lizbeth Ovalle and Mayra Pelayo for a 2-0 victory Monday night in the CONCACAF Women’s Gold Cup.

The US entered the game 40-1-1 against its rival, with its only previous loss a 2-1 decision during Women’s World Cup qualifying in 2010.

It was the first loss for the US under interim coach Twila Kilgore, who took over after the team’s dramatic exit from the Women’s World Cup last summer in the round of 16. Emma Hayes will take over for Kilgore this spring.

Mexico, which failed to qualify for last year’s World Cup, finished atop Group A in the Gold Cup while the United States finished second. Both teams advanced to the knockout round.

“They went out and they were bold, they were brave with the dream of playing a good game against the United States,” Mexico coach Pedro Lopez Ramos said.

Ovalle, who plays for Tigres of Monterrey, put Mexico ahead in the 28th minute. US defender Becky Sauerbrunn tried to defend Ovalle but kicked the ball right at her.

Ovalle floated a shot over goalkeeper Alyssa Naeher and two US defenders and into the net.

It was the first goal conceded by the US to a CONCACAF opponent in 33 matches.

“I think it just shows how far the game is coming and there’s no easy games anymore. And if we don’t take care of business and we don’t execute, this is to be expected,” Kilgore said. “We’ll step up and take ownership in that and I think anytime you have a group that is willing to take ownership in things like this, it’s a good thing for the future of the tournament. Everything’s still on the table and we’ll be motivated, that’s for sure.”

Sauerbrunn took full responsibility for the goal, both on the field and in the locker room afterward.

“As a veteran, you know, you have some rough days at the office and tonight is definitely a rough day,” she said. “But luckily, you’ll have another day at the office and it’s just what you make out of it.

Mexico nearly scored again in first-half stoppage time but Karla Nieto’s shot from distance hit the crossbar.

Kiana Palacios had a good chance to give Mexico a cushion but her shot hit defender Abby Dahlkemper and bounded away.

By that time, Mexico could feel its momentum.

Pelayo scored from distance in stoppage time and Mexico’s players celebrated wildly on the field.

United States defender Abby Dahlkemper, right, and Mexico forward Kiana Palacios, left, are seen in action during the CONCACAF Gold Cup women’s soccer tournament match on Feb. 26, 2024, in Carson, Calif. AP

“If we lose in the quarterfinals, then the beautiful win of today is useless,” Lopez Ramos said through a translator. “I hope that this is not an isolated moment.”

The United States saw success from its teenagers in the first two games of the tournament. Olivia Moultrie, 18, scored twice in a 5-0 victory over the Dominican Republic and Jaedyn Shaw, 19, scored a pair in a 4-0 victory over Argentina.

But Mexico played surprisingly tough and the United States could not rebound after conceding that first goal.

“I would say 2010, in that game, playing in Cancun, that stadium, I think we were all a little bit surprised by that result of qualifying for the World Cup,” said Sauerbrunn, who played in that loss 14 years ago. “I would say tonight that we never take any opponent for granted. I think they had a game plan and they executed it better than than what we had for our game plan. So that’s all on us.”

This is the first-ever Women’s Gold Cup, created to give women’s teams in the CONCACAF region more competitive matches. Twelve teams played group-stage matches across three cities: Carson, San Diego and Houston.

Argentina beat the Dominican Republic 3-0 earlier Monday in Group A.

The teams will be re-seeded following the group stage, so Mexico and the United States will have to wait to learn their opponents in the quarterfinals.

“The fact that everyone in that locker room can say they played a part in it is a big deal,” Diana Ordonez said afterward. “We’re just really proud but we know that we still have work to do.”

Emil Forsberg ‘desperately’ wants to help Red Bulls win first MLS Cup

The Red Bulls are riding the longest postseason streak in North American men’s pro sports, and in MLS history.

But they’ve still never won an MLS Cup.

That’s exactly why Emil Forsberg came to New York: to change that.

Speaking with The Post for his first interview since arriving in the U.S., the Red Bulls’ first top-flight star in a decade — a World Cup standout for Sweden — said helping them break through to claim their first league title is why he left RB Leipzig in Germany for their stateside sister club.

“That’s the goals, why I’m coming: It’s the challenge. I want to win something, and I want to win something bad,” Forsberg, 32, told The Post. “I did it in Leipzig. I came there, we went up, we [won] the Cup two times, we won the Super Cup. So I’ve done the journey, I know how hard you have to work for it. But that’s why I came here, because I desperately want to win with New York Red Bulls.

Emil Forsberg wants to help the Red Bulls snap their stretch of 14 consecutive postseason appearances without a title. AP

“Every player plays to win, and we have to get this in our heads and to push each other on every training to do as we’re told and to have fun together. … We can have a lot of fun this year, because everything is possible.”

The Red Bulls have 14 straight playoffs without a title.

The past decade has seen a Moneyball-style youth movement, but Forsberg could represent a pivot.

Costing a $3.3 million transfer fee per Transfermarket, and reportedly earning $5.89 million annually on a three-year deal with a 2027 option, the attacking midfielder is the Red Bulls’ biggest investment since Thierry Henry’s 2014 retirement.

He’s also one they’re familiar with, and he knows them.

In nine years with Leipzig, he helped them get promoted to the Bundesliga, had more assists (69) and Champions League appearances (41) than anybody in team history, and was tied for the most Champions League goals (11).

“I felt as always really appreciated inside Red Bull. And when this solution came up, I felt it was a no-brainer for me. I really, really wanted to do it, and I showed it,” Forsberg told The Post. “I had good talks with Jochen [Schneider, Red Bulls head of sport] and everybody, and we felt that this is going to be amazing, and we want to do it because we want to get even better and to have a fantastic season this year.

“I’ve been nine years at Leipzig now, seen everything, almost done everything, and I felt I was ready for a change. And the challenge here in New York with Red Bulls is amazing. We want to push even more, and to do even better than last year and the years before. That’s why I came, because I love a challenge and the challenge was to come here and to make it better. And that’s what I want to do.”

Emil Forsberg compiled the most assists and Champions League appearances in RB Leipzig history. AP

Forsberg talked to Schneider, who’d been Leipzig’s head of sport and internationalization, and former Leipzig CEO Oliver Mintzlaff, still highly placed within the Red Bull corporation.

He spoke to Red Bulls coach Sandro Schwarz, a Bundesliga vet expected to play a familiar pressing style.

He even reached out to ex-Leipzig teammates Tyler Adams and Caden Clark, who gave scouting reports from their playing days in New York.

In short, the move wasn’t haphazard.

But from the time the option opened up in September or October, Forsberg and wife Shanga were sold.

“We’re both really excited for the change, to just start a new life in New York, New Jersey,” Forsberg told The Post. “We’ve been in Germany for nine years, and we both said to each other straightaway that this is an amazing opportunity. For me it’s sport wise, and for her lifestyle and everything just to have a change. And we don’t need to speak German anymore — that’s good.”

Arsenal vs. Crystal Palace pick: Premier League predictions, odds

Sunday’s lone Premier League match will have massive ramifications at both ends of the table.

With a win over Crystal Palace, league-leaders Arsenal would go into the final international break of the season with an eight-point lead over Manchester City with one more match played.

Palace, meanwhile, are now firmly in the relegation battle with just three points separating them from the drop zone.

Does Palace have a hope of pulling off one of the biggest results of the season?

Crystal Palace vs. Arsenal pick

Patrick Vieira’s Crystal Palace were one of the most impressive teams in the Premier League last season.

The Eagles punched above their weight en route to a 12th-place finish and their expected goal difference suggested they deserved even better.

Palace’s defense was the driving force behind its success, as the Eagles finished seventh in goals conceded and fifth in expected goals allowed.

That defensive performance is what made Crystal Palace a trendy sleeper pick for the 2022-23 season.

Palace then backed up all that hype with a terrific showing on the Opening Day of the season.

Though they lost, 2-0, to Arsenal, Palace looked a tough nut to crack and probably deserved a better result on that day. Everything was looking up for the Eagles.

Wilfried Zaha of Crystal Palace
Getty Images

Unfortunately, things have gone awry since that day.

The Eagles have struggled in all phases of the game, but the defense has completely lost the plot compared to what we saw in 2021-22.

The Eagles rank 12th in non-penalty expected goals allowed, 13th in big scoring chances conceded and are the fourth-worst team in the circuit in preventing the opposition from entering their 18-yard box.

It’s a strange twist of events considering this is basically the same unit we saw last year with the same manager.

Arsenal should have no issues breaking down this Palace defense.

Get the lowdown on the Best USA Sports Betting Sites and Apps

The Gunners take more shots and create more box entries than any team in the Premier League and rank second in both expected goals created and big scoring chances generated.

Arsenal can likely name their score on Sunday.

That said, there are some cracks starting to show in the Arsenal defense.

After a brilliant first half of the season, the Gunners have seen their defensive numbers dip a bit since the World Cup break.

Arsenal still boasts one of the best defenses in the world, but their form has wobbled and Palace could find a way on the scoresheet.

Arsenal should do most of the heavy-lifting for this over 3.5, but Palace can contribute, too.

Bournemouth vs. Wolverhampton odds, pick

It’s been an ugly stretch for Bournemouth Football Club. The Cherries are 0-2-5 (W-D-L) in their seven matches since the World Cup and have scored just twice, while giving up 12 goals in that span. Bournemouth is now sitting in 19th-place with 18 points from 22 matches and is a -450 favorite to be relegated.

Bournemouth will have a chance to close the gap on one of the teams its chasing, Wolverhampton Wanderers, on Saturday.

Wolves are a -155 home favorite on the three-way moneyline.

Bournemouth vs. Wolverhampton prediction

10 a.m. ET, Peacock

There’s very little in the numbers that suggest that Bournemouth can make a charge up the table and save themselves from relegation, but there is reason to be cautiously optimistic that the Cherries can be a tough out against Wolverhampton at the Molineux on Saturday.

The Cherries have mustered up just two goals in their last seven matches, but they’ve created close to seven expected goals, meaning they should experience some positive regression at some point. Bournemouth are playing poorly — they boast a -7.1 expected goal difference since the World Cup — but the Cherries are not playing as bad as their -10 goal differential implies.

On the opposite side of the coin, Wolverhampton have enjoyed a bit of a new-manager bounce since the World Cup. Wolves have four wins, one draw and three losses since the Premier League returned and own a +2 goal difference in that seven-game stretch. Wolverhampton needed a stretch like that to give themselves some breathing room in the relegation fight and they’ve accomplished that and now sit five points above 18th-place Everton.

Get the lowdown on the Best USA Sports Betting Sites and Apps

The feeling around the Black Country is that Wolverhampton have found their footing under Julen Lopetegui, but the truth is that Wolves are not playing that much better than they were under previous manager Bruno Lage. The only difference is that Wolverhampton is finishing its chances and getting saves from goalkeeper Jose Sa. According to Understat, Wolves should have around 7.3 points from its last seven contests, not 13.

Wolverhampton is a much better team than Bournemouth and is a deserving favorite — especially at home — but this number is way too high on a very vulnerable, flawed team that is just going through a hot stretch. Getting near +480 to take on Wolverhampton is always going to be worth a hard look, even if the team you need to back is Bournemouth.

Croatia hangs on to beat Morocco for third place at World Cup

AL RAYYAN, Qatar — Luka Modric led Croatia to third place in what was likely the midfield great’s last appearance at the World Cup.

The runners-up from four years ago secured another medal by beating Morocco 2-1 in the third-place match on Saturday.

Mislav Orsic scored the decisive goal shortly before halftime at Khalifa International Stadium to ensure Modric finished on a winning note, if this does turn out to be his last World Cup match.

At the age of 37, that seems likely, even if there are hopes he will lead his country at the 2024 European Championship.

Josko Gvardiol put Croatia ahead in the seventh minute, but Achraf Dari evened the score in the ninth.

It is the second time Croatia has taken third place. The team also achieved that feat in its first World Cup as an independent nation 1998.

After becoming the first African team to reach the World Cup semifinals, Morocco’s tournament ended in two losses. But the team’s achievements in Qatar will be remembered for the outpouring of pride among Arab nations.

The World Cup final between defending champion France and Argentina is scheduled for Sunday at Lusail Stadium.

The third-place match is considered by some to be a meaningless exhibition. Even Morocco coach Walid Regragui described it as a “booby prize” in the buildup. But neither team lacked motivation in a fiercely contested game between two nations that few expected to go so far.

That was underlined by a host of players needing to be substituted because of injury in the second half as Morocco pushed for an equalizer.

The teams had already played out 0-0 draw in the group stage and had made to the semifinals on the back of tough defenses, with a combined six shutouts. Goals weren’t a problem this time.

Perhaps that was because of the relative freedom of playing in a game with supposedly little at stake. Another factor for Morocco, at least, was the absence of three key defenders, Romain Saiss, Nayef Aguerd and Noussair Mazraoui.

The impact of those absences was felt when Croatia took the lead off Gvardiol’s diving header. In a slick move, Ivan Perisic flicked a free kick into the middle of the penalty box and the center back did the rest.

Morocco responded two minutes later when Lovro Majer inadvertently helped on Hakim Ziyech’s free kick and Dari headed in to even the score.

Croatia, however, was back in front three minutes before halftime.

Orsic picked up the ball on the left of the box and curled a shot toward the top corner. Morocco goalkeeper Yassine Bounou got a touch on the ball, but could only push it onto the post on its way into the net.

World Cup odds, pick Wednesday

One of the great sports stories of the year will reach a fever pitch on Wednesday as Morocco, the biggest Cinderella story at the World Cup since 2002, will take on defending champion France for a place in the final.

Last week, Morocco stunned Portugal 1-0 to ink their spot in the semifinals.

Morocco will certainly have the backing of the crowd and the world beyond French borders, but is the fairytale nature of this run inflating the price on the Atlas Lions against perhaps the best team in the world?

Below we break down Morocco vs. France at 2 p.m. ET Wednesday on FOX.

France vs. Morocco prediction

Not only is Morocco in the semifinals despite being a massive long shot before the tournament, but the Atlas Lions have got this far by going the hard route. Morocco topped Group F ahead of Belgium and Croatia, and then they defeated Spain and Portugal in their first two knockout matches.

Oftentimes when a Cinderella story like this emerges, the knee-jerk reaction is to chalk it up to luck, but that just hasn’t been the case for Morocco. The Atlas Lions are definitely relying on defensive prowess rather than offensive flair to get results, but that strategy is working and there’s no shame in putting defense first.

And it’s not like they’re just parking the bus, either. The Atlas Lions held Spain and Portugal to just 1.9 total expected goals over their last two matches, and they won the xG battle, 1.4 to 0.9, in a picture-perfect performance against the Portuguese in the quarterfinals.

In other words, Morocco’s defensive solidity keeps them in games, but they’re also giving their opponents plenty to worry about when they have the ball.

Morocco has allowed just one goal in this tournament and posted clean sheets against Croatia, Belgium, Portugal and Spain, so the Atlas Lions will be confident that they can do it again against the defending champions.

Because of their versatility in attack and the presence of Kylian Mbappe, France represents a steeper challenge than the other foes Morocco has vanquished, but there are also reasons for Les Bleus to be concerned in this matchup.

Betting on the World Cup?

As strong as France has looked with the ball, they have had to navigate some wobbly defense throughout this tournament. Their semifinal against England was basically a coin flip, but Les Bleus defense did allow 2.4 xGA to the Three Lions and was also charged with 1.7 xGA versus a Polish team that was really poor for most of the tournament.

France should have similar problems against Morocco, who have talented players that can win a game with a moment of magic.

It’s a gameplan that’s worked perfectly thus far, and it’s one that makes the Atlas Lions a very dangerous underdog once again on Wednesday.

Belgium World Cup stars Kevin De Bruyne, Jan Vertonghen get heated

Belgium’s “Golden Generation” has devolved into the “Fighting Generation.”

Following the team’s shocking 2-0 World Cup loss to Morocco on Sunday, veteran stars Kevin De Bruyne, Jan Vertonghen and Eden Hazard clashed in a heated locker room altercation, according to RTL Sport.

The incident became physical and teammate Romelu Lukaku had to separate them, according to the report.

Tension inside the Red Devils’ squad has been rising since the beginning of the tournament. Asked in the build-up to the match about the team’s chances to win the World Cup, De Bruyne curiously told The Guardian that Belgium has “no chance” because the team was “too old.”

“I think our chance was 2018,” De Bruyne said. “We have a good team, but it is aging.”

It was unclear if De Bruyne, a 31-year-old attacking midfielder, was specifically shading the team’s older defenders. The 35-year-old Vertonghen has started alongside the 33-year-old Toby Alderweireld at center back for both of Belgium’s World Cup matches.

After emerging as some of the best young talents all across Europe, De Bruyne, Vertonghen, Alderweireld, Hazard and Lukaku along with Thibaut Courtois and Dries Mertens offered the nation ample hope to win long-coveted major international trophies.

The core, however, has transitioned from tantalizing dark horses, to contenders and favorites, to underachieving disappointments. The current group has not won any major trophy, only getting as far as third place in the 2018 World Cup.

Following the loss to Morocco and prior to the blowup, an enraged Vertonghen appeared to hit back at De Bruyne while speaking with reporters.

“There’s so much going through my mind right now, things I shouldn’t say in the open air,” Vertonghen said. “Where did it go wrong? We probably also attack badly because we are too old, that must be it now, surely?”

Mertens’ wife, Kat Kerkhofs, revealed the there was still vitriol at a team barbecue hours later.

“That was really awkward,” Kerkhofs told the MIDMID MONDIAL podcast. “The players were logically still very disappointed.”

Belgium sits in third place in Group F heading into their final group-stage game against Croatia on Thursday. They are one point below Morocco, who faces already-eliminated Canada, for the group’s second spot in the knockout round.

Morocco stuns Belgium in latest 2022 World Cup upset

The upsets keep on coming at the 2022 World Cup.

Morocco stunned Belgium on Sunday in a 2-0 victory to move to the top of the Group F standings. The win is Morocco’s first at a World Cup since 1998.

It seemed like it might not be Morocco’s day after they had a goal waved off by VAR right before halftime, but Abdelhamid Sabiri scored in the 73rd minute to break a scoreless deadlock, and Zakaria Aboukhlal added another in stoppage time to cement the win.

Belgium entered the 2022 World Cup in Qatar ranked No. 2 in the FIFA world rankings. They defeated Canada 1-0 in their first game on Wednesday. Morocco tied Croatia 0-0 in their first game.

Perhaps this isn’t a total surprise for Belgium, at least not to star midfielder Kevin De Bruyne. In an interview with the Guardian published on Saturday, De Bruyne was asked if Belgium can win the 2022 World Cup after reaching the semifinals four years ago in Russia.

“No chance, we’re too old,” De Bruyne said. “I think our chance was 2018. We have a good team, but it is aging. We lost some key players. We have some good new players coming, but they are not at the level other players were in 2018. I see us more as outsiders.”

Morocco’s midfielder Abdelhamid Sabiri (11) celebrates with forward Zakaria Aboukhlal (l.) and defender Yehia Attiyallah after he scored his team’s first goal against Belgium in the 2022 World Cup on Nov. 27, 2022.

Belgium’s Kevin De Bruyne reacts after his team’s 2-0 loss to Morocco at the 2022 World Cup on Nov. 27, 2022.

Croatia and Canada are set to play their second Group F game Sunday at 11 a.m. Belgium can advance with a win over Croatia on Thursday, when Morocco plays Canada.

Earlier Sunday, Costa Rica bounced back from a 7-0 drubbing against Spain to defeat Japan, 1-0, after Japan upset Germany on Wednesday.
