Samsung Galaxy S20 Series Set to Receive Extended Security Updates

Samsung Galaxy S20 series is confirmed to receive security updates for a few more months. During its February 2020 launch, the models were promised to get three major Android OS upgrades and four years of security updates. The company has now confirmed that the phones will continue to receive quarterly security updates. Notably, the phones will not be getting any additional OS updates. They launched with Android 10-based One UI 2.1 and the last upgrade it received was Android 13-based One UI 5.1.

Under the Scope section on the company’s Mobile Security website, Samsung has confirmed that “select devices launched in 2019 or later” will get a minimum of four years of firmware security updates, while some newer models will receive up to five years of security updates. The South Korean tech giant rolls out security updates in three intervals — monthly, quarterly and biannually. More recent devices are eligible for more regular updates. The Galaxy S20 lineup has been listed among the handsets that will receive these updates, as spotted by SamMobile. 

This confirms that the base Samsung Galaxy S20 alongside the Galaxy S20+ and Galaxy S20 Ultra will receive a few more quarterly security updates. However, the company did not confirm when this support would be discontinued.

The Galaxy S20 FE model was unveiled in October 2020, months after the flagship series and was also promised to receive four years of security updates. The handset continues to receive monthly OTA updates. After October this year, it may start getting quarterly security updates instead of monthly ones, based on the information on Samsung’s website.

The Galaxy S20 series comes with quad-HD+ Dynamic AMOLED 2X displays with up to 120Hz refresh rate. The base model has a triple rear camera unit with a 64-megapixel telephoto sensor and two 12-megapixel sensors paired with wide and ultra-wide lenses, respectively. The other two models pack quad rear camera systems with an additional depth sensor. The Galaxy S20+ also has a 64-megapixel telephoto shooter, while the top-of-the-line Ultra model includes a 48-megapixel telephoto camera alongside a 108-megapixel sensor paired with a wide-angle lens.

Samsung Partners With Wilder World Metaverse Game, Will Offer NFT Rewards as Part of Web3 TV Bundle

Samsung, the South Korean tech giant, has been taking small steps to engage with Web3 without directly exposing its massive user base to volatile digital assets. In a fresh development, Samsung has announced a partnership with metaverse game Wilder World. Through this partnership, Wilder World will provide NFT rewards to fifteen customers of Samsung’s exclusive Web3 TV bundle. This deal, for Wilder World, will offer the game inroads into millions of houses through Samsung’s smart televisions.

A free-to-roam metaverse ecosystem, Wilder World is primarily a competitive racing game that launched for alpha testing in December 2023 and will begin a wider rollout this year. The team behind the game announced its partnership with Samsung via an official post on X on Wednesday.

In Samsung’s next sale of exclusive Web3 TV bundles, fifteen select buyers will get Wilder World NFTs as rewards. Through this partnership, the metaverse game expects to add new players to its ecosystem.

Samsung, catching up with the advancements in emerging technologies, is essentially looking to connect with a newer generation of customers. The Seoul-based company is hence integrating Web3 elements like the metaverse and NFTs with its newer range of products.

Samsung has long maintained its lead in the television market. In 2023, the company reportedly occupied a 30.1 percent market share of televisions sold globally, which was slightly higher than the previous year’s 29.7 percent. With its new initiatives, Samsung could directly bring Web3 technologies to its vast user base.

This is not the first time that the tech mammoth has taken a Web3-friendly approach. In April 2023, for instance, Samsung teamed up with Crypto.com to bring asset trading services on devices from the Galaxy Z fold series.

In 2022, Samsung tied up with partners Theta Labs and Nifty Gateway to get NFTs to its smart TV and smartphone ecosystems.

Samsung Galaxy Watch FE Model Numbers Surface Online, Could Launch Soon: Report

Samsung Galaxy Watch FE will be launched soon, according to a report. The South Korean tech conglomerate could soon introduce a ‘Fan Edition’ (FE) version of its Galaxy Watch smartwatch, which runs on Google’s Wear OS operating system. According to the publication, the Galaxy Watch FE will be introduced at a “budget-friendly price”.

The Samsung Galaxy Watch 4 that was launched in August 2021 bears the model number SM-R860F, which is quite similar to the purported Galaxy Watch FE model. This suggests that it could arrive as an affordable smartwatch that runs on Wear OS, and is powered by the Exynos W920 chip.

More products from Apple like the MacBook M1 model will be available at a 33 percent discount alongside no-cost EMI options starting at Rs. 54 per day. The 64GB Wi-Fi variant of the iPad 9th Gen will also be offered at the lowest effective price of Rs. 23,900.

The company added that during the sale, a range of gaming laptops will also be offered at discounted prices starting at Rs. 49,999. The Bose Soundbar 900, can be bought at a 30 percent discount at a price of Rs. 72,990, while Dolby Atmos soundbars will be available at a 65 percent discount, starting at Rs. 17,990. 

Home appliances like air conditioners and washing machines will be available at discounted rates during the Digital Discount Days Sale. The company stated that 1 Ton 3-star inverter ACs will be offered at the price of Rs. 20,990, while high-end 11kg or 7kg washing machines with dryers will be available at Rs. 61,990. Refrigerators starting at Rs. 49,990 will also be available for purchase during the Reliance Digital sale, according to the company.

Samsung Galaxy S24 FE in the Works, to Launch Earlier Than Usual: Report

Samsung Galaxy S23 FE was launched in October last year as a tweaked variant of the regular Galaxy S23. Now, the Galaxy S24 FE is said to be in the works as a successor. A new report from a Korean news outlet indicates that a Samsung supplier has started mass production of display driver chips for the Galaxy S24 FE and the handset will go official in the summer. This rumoured timeline is considerably earlier than the release of any previous Fan Edition model. The Galaxy S24 FE is expected to debut as a toned-down version of the vanilla Galaxy S24.

As per a report by The Elec, Galaxy S24 FE is scheduled to be released this summer. The report citing industry sources claims that a Samsung supplier has begun mass production of TED (TCON Embedded Driver IC) for the organic light emitting diode (OLED) of the upcoming Fan Edition smartphone.

The Galaxy S24 FE’s rumoured summer launch window (June to August) would be earlier than the Galaxy S23 FE launch. The latter was announced in October last year, around eight months after the debut of the Galaxy S23 series in February. The upcoming model is likely to come as a watered-down variant of Galaxy S24.

If this report turns out to be true, then Samsung will have an eventful second half this year. The company is expected to announce the Galaxy Ring, Galaxy Z Fold 6, Galaxy Z Flip 6, Galaxy Watch 7 lineup and more around July and August.

As per past leaks, the Galaxy S24 FE will get a 6.1-inch AMOLED display and could run on Exynos 2400 SoC or Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 SoC depending on the market. Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 6 Said to Offer Same Battery, Charging Speed as Galaxy Z Fold 5

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 6 is expected to launch later this year alongside the Galaxy Z Flip 6. Samsung usually uses its best hardware in its fold lineup and previous leaks and rumours indicated that it will arrive with substantial upgrades over last year’s Galaxy Z Fold 5. Unfortunately, the company might keep the same battery and fast charging speed for the upcoming book-style foldable smartphone.

Tipster Ice Universe (@UniverseIce) has posted the battery and charging specifications of the Galaxy Z Fold 6 on X. As per the tipster, the upcoming foldable will house a 4,400mAh battery with a charging speed of 25W, the same as the Galaxy Z Fold 5 and Galaxy Z Fold 4. This also corroborates a 3C (China Compulsory Certification) website listing.

Samsung is expected to announce the Galaxy Z Fold 6 in July in Paris. It is tipped to come with a titanium frame and could be available in three colour options — dark blue, light pink, and silver. The flagship foldable could use a Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 for Galaxy SoC and 16GB of RAM.

Last year, the Galaxy Z Fold 5 was unveiled with a starting price tag of Rs. 1,54,999 for the base 12GB RAM + 256GB storage configuration. The Galaxy Z Fold 5 has a triple rear camera setup comprising a 50-megapixel wide-angle camera, a 12-megapixel ultra-wide-angle camera, and a 10-megapixel telephoto camera. It also includes a 10-megapixel camera on the cover display. It has an IPX8 rating for water resistance.

Samsung Galaxy Watch 7 Pro Tipped to Get Bigger Battery Than Galaxy Watch 5 Pro

Samsung Galaxy Watch 7 series is expected to launch later this year alongside the purported Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 6 and Galaxy Z Flip 6 foldables. The company has yet to confirm the launch of any of the products but there have been several rumours about them over the past few weeks. The Galaxy Watch 7 lineup has been tipped to launch with three possible variants, each with varying connectivity options. Now a report has leaked the battery details of the Galaxy Watch 7 Pro.

A GalaxyClub report spotted the battery details of an upcoming smartwatch on the Safety Korea certification site. The battery with the model number EB-BL705ABY was listed with a rated capacity of 578mAh. This is larger than the rated capacity of the 573mAh rated battery which was used in the Galaxy Watch 5 Pro and marketed as 590mAh.

Therefore, a smartwatch carrying a larger battery than the Galaxy Watch 5 Pro could be the Galaxy Watch 7 Pro. Earlier reports claimed that the Galaxy Watch 7 series is expected to come with three variants – out of which, one is likely a Pro model. Notably, the Galaxy Watch 6 series launched in July 2023 with a base Samsung Galaxy Watch 6 and a Samsung Galaxy Watch 6 Classic.

Samsung’s Galaxy Watch 7 lineup is said to come with Wi-Fi-only and eSIM-supported variants. The former is expected to come with model numbers SM-L300 and SM-L305, while the latter is said to carry model numbers SM-L310 and SM-L315. The rumoured top-of-the-line third variant, expected to be the Galaxy Watch 7 Pro, is likely to carry model numbers SM-L700 and SM-L705. All the model numbers ending with the number five are said to support cellular and eSIM connectivity, while the other models are likely to support only Wi-Fi.

The Galaxy Watch 7 models are also tipped to get 32GB of onboard storage, which is a considerable upgrade over the 16GB on the Galaxy Watch 6 models. The purported smartwatches are expected to run on a new version of Wear OS and One UI Watch and come with an upgraded 3nm chipset which is likely to be 50 percent more power efficient than the current ones.

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 6 Prototype Image Surfaces, Dimensions Leaked

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 6 is still months away, but a new leak has revealed more information about the handset. A recent report claimed that the South Korean tech giant could launch a more premium version of the standard model dubbed Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 6 Ultra this year as well, but no details about it are known. Now, a tipster has revealed the possible dimensions and display ratio of the standard Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 6 model, and based on the information, the foldable might get some design changes.

According to a post by tipster Ice Universe on X (formerly known as Twitter), the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 6 might weigh less than its predecessor by a significant margin. The Galaxy Z Fold 5, launched last year weighs 253g, but in comparison, this year’s model could weigh 239g. For reference, this is the same weight as the OnePlus Open.

The weight is not the only improvement the foldable smartphone is tipped to get. The tipster said in a separate post, “The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 6 standard version has an unfolded thickness of 5.6mm, a folded thickness of 12.1mm, and a weight of 239 grams. The resolution of both the internal and external screens has been improved. The internal screen is 7.6 inches, 7:6 ratio, and the external screen is 6.3 inches, 22:9 Proportion.”

To unpack, the thickness of the smartphone in both folded and unfolded state has been trimmed compared to the predecessor, which means the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 6 could fit in the pocket much more comfortably. The external display is also slightly bigger, which means the tech giant could offer slimmer bezels. Finally, the tipster also highlights that the resolution of both the external and internal display has improved.

Further, Ice Universe also shared an image with the caption, “This is the prototype of Galaxy Z Fold 6”. In the picture, a bar-shaped smartphone can be seen which appears pretty similar to last year’s Z Fold 5. Not a lot is known about Samsung’s foldables at this point. But a report last week claimed that both the Galaxy Z Fold 6 and the Galaxy Z Flip 6 could come with a 25W wired charging solution. If this is true, then the charging speed on this year’s foldables will see no improvements compared to the last year’s models.
