LG, Meta Announce Collaboration to Develop Next-Generation XR Technologies

LG and Meta on Wednesday announced a strategic collaboration focused on extended reality (XR) devices and technologies. Meta has previously launched Meta Quest virtual reality (VR) and mixed reality headsets that are capable of offering VR and augmented reality (AR) experiences. Meanwhile, LG created an XR business unit within the Home Entertainment division to focus on building mixed-reality capable devices at the end of 2023. The news comes shortly after the CEOs of both companies were reportedly scheduled to meet in order to discuss the development of a new mixed reality headset that could be unveiled by the Facebook parent firm in 2025.

The South Korean firm announced the partnership in a prepared statement on Wednesday. “LG envisions that by bringing together Meta’s platform with its own content/service capabilities from its TV business, a distinctive ecosystem can be forged in the XR domain, which is one of the company’s new business areas. Moreover, the fusion of Meta’s diverse core technological elements with LG’s cutting-edge product and quality capabilities promises significant synergies in next-gen XR device development.”

The announcement also states that Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg met with LG Electronics CEO William Cho and Park Hyoung-sei, President, Home Entertainment at LG Electronics at LG Twin Towers in Yeouido, Seoul. The two parties discussed business strategies and considerations for the next-generation XR device development. The LG leadership also tried out the Meta Quest 3 headset and Meta Ray-Ban smart glasses and expressed interest in the company’s large language model (LLM) stack as well as its on-device AI integration.

It appears that LG will extend its hardware and product development efficiency, whereas Meta helps with the core technology inclusion. A report has suggested that the two tech giants have been working together on the Meta Quest Pro 2 for quite some time and the headset could be launched in 2025. At the moment, the details around the partnership are not known and whether both companies offer their expertise and help each other in building separate products or if they will also create co-branded devices is yet to be seen.

According to a report by Reuters, Zuckerberg is currently on a tour of Asia and arrived in South Korea on Tuesday. During his stay, he is expected to meet President Yoon Suk Yeol and other leaders in the technology space. This is reportedly his first known visit to the country in ten years. He is also expected to visit Japan and India as a part of this trip.

Meta Quest Pro 2 to Be Developed in Collaboration With LG; Will Compete With Apple Vision Pro in 2025: Report

Meta Quest Pro 2 will be developed as a successor to the company’s first premium XR headset in partnership with South Korean tech conglomerate, according to a report. The wearable device is said to be more powerful — and more expensive — than its predecessor, and will compete with the Apple Vision Pro and other advanced mixed reality headsets that are said to be in the works. The second-generation headset from Meta will reportedly use a user interface (UI) based on LG’s webOS instead of the company’s Quest UI.

A Korea Economic Daily report (in Korean) citing an industry official that Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg and LG Electronics CEO Cho Joo-wan will meet on Wednesday ahead of the companies’ plan to use LG’s hardware and software technology — along with the Facebook parent firm’s metaverse technology — to release the “highest-performing XR headset” in Q1 2025, “surpassing” Apple’s Vision Pro headset.

News of the purported LG-Meta alliance first surfaced in September 2023, with a report stating the device would be priced at $2,000 (roughly Rs. 1.65 lakh), or nearly double the price of the first-generation Quest Pro headset, at the time — the latter was originally launched at $1,499 (roughly Rs. 1,24 lakh) in 2022.

However, LG’s hardware won’t be the only technology from the firm to make its way to the purported headset. The report states that Meta is considering integrating LG’s webOS software in place of Quest UI — this could come in handy if the company wants to compete with visionOS on the Apple Vision Pro or Samsung’s purported ‘Infinte’ XR headset.

As part of the purported alliance, Meta’s AI technology will also make its way to some of LG’s products. The report states that Zuckerberg’s first visit to South Korean in a decade will be to discuss XR headsets, and that the companies are expected to announce their plans to team up to manufacture Meta’s next premium XR headsets.

Apple to Launch iPhone With Under Display Camera to Replace Dynamic Island After 2026: Report

Apple is working on equipping its iPhone models with an under display camera (UDC) that could debut on an upcoming model in the next couple of years, according to a report. South Korean tech conglomerate LG is reportedly working on an under panel camera (UPC) that hides the cutout for the component on a smartphone’s display, allowing for an uninterrupted viewing experience when playing games or watching videos. Apple is expected to replace the Dynamic Island display cutout with sensors located under the display for camera and Face ID in the future.

The Elec reports (in Korean) that LG Group’s electronic component manufacturing firm LG Innotek is in “advanced development” of a UDC system that is expected to solve one of the biggest challenges that posed the technology — insufficient light transmission. Unlike existing selfie cameras, under display cameras allow less light to pass through the display area, which means that the camera lens and the sensor receive less information, resulting in low-quality images.

LG Innotek’s ‘freeform optic” lens technology is expected to overcome the challenges posed by under display cameras, according to the report. The company has applied for patents that reference this freeform optic technology since 2021, and deal with (translated from Korean) “optical system, camera module, and mobile terminal”.

By utilising a freeform lens, the company’s patent states that it can reduce the distortions such as lower quality in the peripheral areas or image blurring by adjusting the thickness of the surrounding lens, according to the report.

The Elec reports that Apple isn’t expected to equip its smartphones with a UDC module until 2026. Before equipping the iPhone with a camera located under the screen, Apple is reportedly looking to add an under display sensor for Face ID authentication.

While the inclusion of these sensors under the screen hints at the arrival of a future iPhone model with an “all screen” display, it is worth noting that Apple will not be the first company to equip its phones with an under-display camera. Chinese smartphones like the ZTE Axon 30 5G and the Xiaomi Mi Mix 4 — both released in 2021 — as well as Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold 4 and Galaxy Z Fold 5 are also equipped with low-resolution selfie cameras located under the display.

iPhone to Get microLED Displays, Apple Watch Ultra Will Be the First to Get It: Report

Apple is rumoured to adopt microLED panels for its entire product lineup soon. The Cupertino-based tech giant will reportedly begin the transition from organic light-emitting diode to micro light-emitting diode display technology late next year or early 2025 with the launch of the 2nd generation Apple Watch Ultra. MicroLED display offers multiple advantages over OLED panels. It offers higher brightness and enhanced contrast ratio while ensuring lower power consumption. The iPhone lineup, followed by iPad units is also expected to switch from OLED to micro-LED in the future.

As per a paywalled report by Digitimes, Apple’s transition to microLED panels from OLED display technology will begin with the launch of the 2nd generation Apple Watch Ultra by the end of 2024 or early 2025. After evaluating microLED technology performance in action, the company will reportedly release iPhone models with microLED screens followed by iPad.

The report, quoting South Korea’s state-owned research institute Information & Communication Technology Promotion (IITP), states that Apple’s ongoing R&Ds in display technology will impact Samsung Display and LG. However, Apple is eyeing to start using its own in-house microLED displays on its smartwatches as early as the end of next year to reduce its reliance on other partners such as Samsung Electronics and LG. This would accelerate its move toward using its own parts across Apple products without depending on components from outside suppliers. However, the iPhone maker may take some time to completely commercialise its self-made display technology.

The microLED display can output improved colour brightness, high resolution, colour contrast, and viewing angles. It also lowers the power consumption. Bloomberg reporter Mark Gurman earlier in his newsletter claimed that Apple might take an entire decade to install the superior display on its iPhone, iPad, and Mac lineup.

The iPhone 15 series — comprising the iPhone 15, iPhone 15 Plus, iPhone 15 Pro, and iPhone 15 Pro Max — that are expected to be launched in September this year could stick with OLED displays.

Xiaomi Leads India’s Smart TV Market in 2022 With 11 Percent Share: Counterpoint Research

India’s smart TV shipments recorded double-digit growth of 28 percent in 2022, which was led primarily by the festive season in the third quarter of multiple new launches, discount events, and promotions, said a Counterpoint Research report.

Moreover, demand for bigger screen-size TVs in the lower price tier also fueled the growth, it said.

While in the December quarter, after the festival sales, smart TV shipments were almost flat at 2 percent Year-on-Year (YoY) due to a slowdown in demand.

Smart device maker Xiaomi continued to lead India’s smart TV market in 2022 with an 11 percent share.

This was followed by Samsung, LG, OnePlus and TCL, respectively in the fast-growing Indian smart TV market.

OnePlus and TCL were among the fastest-growing smart TV brands in 2022, said the Counterpoint Research report.

While Sony was among the preferred brands in the premium segment.

In 2022, over 99 percent of the TVs were assembled locally, while only some high-end TV sets were imported by the brands, it said.

Moreover, 96 percent of the market is being driven by LED TVs, and MediaTek chips had around a three-fifths share of the total TV market during the year.

In the December quarter, top five brands MI, Samsung, LG, One Plus and TCL controlled 42.6 percent of the market share.

Senior Research Analyst Anshika Jain said, “OnePlus, Vu, and TCL were among the fastest-growing brands in the smart TV segment in 2022. Xiaomi led the overall smart TV market with an 11 percent share, followed by Samsung and LG.” Smart TV shipments in Rs. 20,000-Rs 30,000 price band grew 40 percent YoY to reach a 29 percent share. The average selling price (ASP) declined 8 percent YoY to around Rs. 30,650, Jain added.

“Smart TV contribution to overall shipments reached its highest-ever of 90 percent during the year. It is expected to go up further due to more launches in the sub-Rs. 20,000 price range and non-smart-TV-to-smart-TV migration. Non-smart TV shipments declined 24 percent YoY in 2022. Online channels increased their contribution to the total shipments to 33 percent during the year,” he said.

Tesla Said to Be Working With Chinese, Korean Partners to Address Tesla 4680 Battery Concerns: All Details

It’s crunch time at Tesla where Elon Musk is looking to crack the code for making better, cheaper batteries.

The electric-vehicle maker is recruiting Chinese and Korean materials suppliers to help lower the cost and boost the energy of its newest battery cells, even as the company struggles with battery-related performance and production issues that have helped delay the launch of its futuristic Cybertruck, according to people familiar with the plans.

Tesla has tapped China’s Ningbo Ronbay New Energy and Suzhou Dongshan Precision Manufacturing to help trim materials costs as it ramps up production of 4680 battery cells in the United States, according to the sources, who asked not to be named.

The details of these arrangements have not previously been reported.

If the Austin, Texas-based EV maker is able to work out the performance and process kinks and meet its ambitious production targets, the 4680 ultimately could be the linchpin – rather than choke point – in CEO Musk’s dream of building 20 million vehicles annually by 2030.

Neither Tesla nor Musk could be reached for comment.

As part of its efforts, Tesla also has signed a deal with Korea’s L&F Co to supply high-nickel cathodes that could increase the energy density of its 4680 cells, one of the sources said.

The automaker aims to augment its own output with 4680 cells from Korea’s LG Energy Solution and Japan’s Panasonic – an insurance policy to secure future EV production, two of the sources said. LG and Panasonic are expected to supply cells for Cybertruck, one of the sources said.

A shortage of batteries means “the factories stall,” Musk told investors in early March.

The new battery is expected to play a key role in the launch late this year of the edgy, stainless-steel Cybertruck, the company’s first new model in more than three years.

Tesla had considered three battery options to ensure that launch is not delayed again: smaller 2170 cells used widely in other Tesla models, 4680 cells and less-expensive lithium iron phosphate cells, but the EV maker favored waiting until the 4680 cells are ready, the sources said.

Details about Tesla’s Cybertruck battery strategy, including use of 4680 cells and consideration of other options, have not been reported.

In 2022, Musk said he did not expect 4680 batteries would be a “limiting factor for Cybertruck or anything else.”

The Tesla-designed 4680 cell – so named for its external dimensions (46mm diameter, 80mm length) – is crucial to future production plans. Tesla intends to make versions at factories in Texas, California, Nevada and Berlin for use in vehicles from Model Y to Cybertruck, the sources said.

But Tesla is still struggling to ramp up the first wave of production, Musk acknowledged at Tesla’s investor day on March 1.

Tesla impact underestimated

Despite the immediate problems, some analysts remain optimistic Tesla will resolve these issues.

“While execution risk remains and many details are unknown, Tesla’s impact on the global battery industry may still be underestimated,” Morgan Stanley said after investor day.

Musk first announced the new cell at Battery Day in September 2020. At that event, he promised a 50 percent reduction in cell cost through a series of innovations, from a larger cell size to a new “dry” electrode coating process that could dramatically reduce the size and cost of a battery factory while boosting cell performance.

Repeated delays in moving the new cell from the initial prototype phase to full-scale production also have pushed back introduction of the long-awaited Cybertruck, which was designed to take advantage of the cell’s potential improvement in energy density and power- advances that have yet to materialize.

But it will take time for suppliers to ramp up production.

Panasonic is running a pilot 4680 production line at its Wakayama factory in Japan, and plans to start volume production later in the fiscal year that ends in March 2024.

Shoichiro Watanabe, chief technology officer of Panasonic Energy, last month said the company’s new Kansas battery plant will focus initially on 2170 cells, but it will eventually shift 4680 production to North America.

Last year, LG said it planned to open a new 4680 production line at its Ochang plant in Korea in the second half of 2023.

Tesla’s first-generation 4680 cells, built at its Fremont, California, factory, failed to hit an energy density target, people involved say.

The automaker so far has been able to dry-coat the anode – the negative electrode – but is still having issues with dry-coating the cathode, where the most significant gains are expected to be made, the sources said.

Tesla’s attempt to ramp up production of the dry coating process has thus far resulted in enough batteries only for about 50,000 vehicles annually, Musk and company executives have said.

In 2020, Musk said Tesla would have enough 4680 capacity in-house to supply 1.3 million Model Ys.

While executives said it seems likely Tesla will be able to increase 4680 output five-fold by year-end, the company is hedging.

Musk is betting if Tesla ends up with too many batteries this year, that is a good problem to have. It can use those for the energy storage systems it sells to utilities and consumers.

Tesla also has been installing first-generation 4680 cells with “wet” cathodes in so-called structural packs in Texas-built Model Ys. A majority of those vehicles use the older 2170 cells.

Tesla plans to use a cathode with more than 90 percent nickel in the next generation of 4680 cells, two sources said. L&F is expected to be one of the suppliers of that high-nickel cathode, another source said.

LG MoodUp Fridge With LED Light Panels, Bluetooth Speaker Unveiled at IFA 2022

LG MoodUp fridge — the company’s latest smart refrigerator — has been unveiled by the company at IFA 2022. The South Korean firm’s latest fridge allows users to pick from a range of colours to light up LED panels on the front of the appliance. It features several RGB panels on the fridge’s doors and users can choose from 22 colour options for the upper doors, and 19 colours for the lower panels. Customisation options also include colour and nature-based themes. The LG MoodUP fridge is also equipped with a Bluetooth speaker that can be paired with a smartphone to stream music, while the LED panels change colours.

While rival Samsung offers customers customisation options with its Bespoke refrigerators, the new LG MoodUp fridge takes customisation to the next level by allowing users to connect their smartphones and change the colours of the fridge on demand. The company is yet to reveal pricing and availability details in the US, and there’s no word on plans to launch the new fridge in India.

LG says that the LED door panels on the MoodUp refrigerator will allow users to customise the look and feel of the appliance by applying colour-based themes such as Season, Place, Mood, and Pop. Users can also manually choose from 22 colour options for the top doors, while the bottom doors will offer a choice of 19 colours.
