New OnePlus Watch Appears on Certification Website, Showcasing New Design and Button Layout

OnePlus recently launched its first WearOS-powered smartwatch, the OnePlus Watch 2, but it already seems to be cooking up another one as per a new leak. In February, OnePlus launched its Watch 2, which was powered by two processors and two operating systems, both of which switched seamlessly and delivered better battery life as described in our review. However, a new OnePlus wearable has now been spotted on a certification website in China and it does have some familiarities with the existing model.

A listing on Chinese certification website TENAA even has a picture of the watch in question. The certification for this mysterious OnePlus wearable was issued on May 19 this year and is tagged with the model number OPWW234 by Oppo, which is OnePlus’ parent company.

Starting off with the image of the smartwatch supplied for the certification, it clearly shows a OnePlus logo on what appears to be a rather large display (given the size of the pin buckle on the strap). The display does have a bezel, but it appears a bit thinner than the Watch 2 and also has a number of inscriptions on it.

The three-quarter profile of the watch does make it appear a lot slimmer compared to the chunkier OnePlus Watch 2, but this could just be because of the angle the photograph was captured from. This smartwatch (which could be the OnePlus Watch 3) also appears to have two buttons like the OnePlus Watch 2 does, but they both point outwards compared to the second (multifunction) button which pointed downwards thanks to its odd placement. The design of the lugs and the placement of the strap seems similar to what’s already available on the outgoing model.

The listing as expected has no product name, but the basic specifications on the listing suggests that it has a 500mAh battery capacity which is similar to the currently available OnePlus Watch 2 but also packs in LTE radios (via eSIM support) for connectivity which are missing on the current model.

The specifications also hint that the device will be powered by Android, which is a slightly different implementation compared to the OnePlus Watch 2 which utilises both WearOS and RTOS as its operating systems. So, it’s unclear if this new smartwatch will go with a dual architecture like the Watch 2.

The watch in question communicates with a smartphone using Bluetooth and also packs Wi-Fi and NFC, as per the listing. It also supports the usual global positioning systems (GPS, BeiDou, GLONASS).

At this moment, it’s unclear when this smartwatch will be announced or revealed. But given that it has reached the certification stage, there’s a good chance that it will be announced soon. What also remains unclear is its positioning. This watch does pack in cellular connectivity over the existing model so it could be a slightly altered variant of the same and end up getting branded as the OnePlus Watch 2S. If it’s a brand new model we could be looking at the OnePlus Watch 3 or an Ultra model, like the one Samsung seems to have in the works.

OnePlus Watch 2 to Arrive With Support for Improved Battery-Efficient Notification System on Wear OS 4

Wear OS 4 has reportedly received a tweak that can significantly improve the battery life of smartwatches that run on Google’s operating system. It will modify how notifications are processed by sending them to a different system, that is expected to improve the device’s battery performance. The OnePlus Watch 2, which was unveiled on Monday at the Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2024, will be the first smartwatch that will support the improved functionality that could arrive on devices in the future.

Until now, notifications on Wear OS have been processed and managed by the application processor (AP) which handles tasks requiring more computational processing. As a result, displaying notifications also results in more power being consumed. On the other hand, tasks requiring less power such as step counting and heart rate monitoring are handled by a separate microcontroller unit (MCU). The Verge reports that Google will allow manufacturers to move the notification system to the MCU on Wear OS 4, and that will significantly reduce the amount of battery consumption that occurs when notifications are flashed.

The report highlights that the functionality was specifically designed for the OnePlus Watch 2, however, it is now going to be expanded to more smartwatches as well. Bjorn Kilburn, Vice President of Wear OS at Google told the publication that other companies will also be able to use this capability. This means going forward, showing notifications, dismissing them, or quickly replying to them will all be handled by the MCU. For the end user, this change is not likely to be visually noticeable, but they will be able to see the difference in terms of a longer-lasting battery cycle.

The OnePlus Watch 2 was showcased on Monday at MWC. The company’s latest smartwatch sports a 1.43-inch round AMOLED display and is powered by a Snapdragon W5 chipset as well as a BES2700 chip or background activity. It is backed by a 500mAh battery with 7.5W charging support. The OnePlus Watch 2 is priced at Rs. 24,999 and will go on sale starting March 4 via Amazon, Flipkart, Myntra, OnePlus online store, Reliance Digital, Croma, and other offline stores.

On Monday, Google also announced two more Wear OS features. Google Wallet passes have finally been made available on Wear OS and users will be able to access different kinds of passes directly from their smartwatches. Second, Google Maps for Wear OS can now show public transit directions to help users catch a bus, a train, or a ferry.

OnePlus Watch 2 FCC Listing Suggests Larger Than Usual Battery, Adding to Company’s Recent Claims

OnePlus is expected to reveal its third smartwatch at the upcoming Mobile World Congress 2024 (MWC 2024) event to be held in Spain. While details about this smartwatch have trickled down through minor leaks over time, we have now started to see more details getting leaked as the launch draws nearer. The latest leak comes from an official source giving us information about the smartwatch’s battery capacity and also answering some questions about OnePlus’ big claims about battery life.

First reported by 9to5Google, an FCC listing could reveal how OnePlus claims to deliver market-beating battery life with its latest smartwatch. The FCC listing suggests that the OnePlus Watch 2 will have a rather large battery with a capacity of 500mAh, which the report claimed is about 64 percent larger than the one in the latest Pixel Watch 2 and about 20 percent larger than the Galaxy Watch 6‘s (44mm) battery.

The Galaxy Watch 5 Pro still has the largest battery standing at 509mAh. OnePlus, in a recent forum post revealed that its Watch 2 will offer a 100-hour battery life in ‘Smart Mode’, which will set some new standards for smartwatches or raise the bar, if it ends up pulling off the same successfully. At the moment, it isn’t clear as to what ‘Smart mode’ does, but it’s clear that the watch will deliver the claimed battery life when used with this mode.

As per the FCC document, the OnePlus Watch 2 will use a pin-based charging system with four flat pins located at the bottom, which will connect to a charging adapter.

Unlike the last OnePlus Watch and the OnePlus Nord Watch, which used a custom OS for software, the presence of a Qualcomm Snapdragon W5 Gen 1 SoC hints at a WearOS-powered smartwatch, which will come as a relief for followers of the brand. A recent leak also hinted the same. With that in mind, it is expected to be far more capable than its successor.

OnePlus recently officially revealed the design of its upcoming smartwatch. It will be available in two colorways — Black Steel and Radiant Steel. Images of the wearable also show a large circular display with two pushers on the right side of the case. OnePlus claims that the Watch 2’s case is made from stainless steel and has a sapphire crystal protected display which should make it as tough as a regular timepiece.

OnePlus Watch 2 Renders, Specifications Surface Online; Tipped to Come With Snapdragon W5 Gen 1 SoC

OnePlus Watch was unveiled in India back in 2021 with a circular design and Warp Charge fast charging support. Now, the Chinese tech brand is reportedly working on the OnePlus Watch 2 as a possible successor. There’s no official word about its launch, but before any kinds of announcements, renders of the upcoming wearable have surfaced online, along with its specifications. The OnePlus Watch 2 is said to feature a Snapdragon W5 Gen 1 chipset and get a 1.43-inch AMOLED display.

Tipster Steve H.McFly (@OnLeaks), in association with MySmartPrice, has leaked the alleged renders and specifications of the OnePlus Watch 2. The renders indicate a circular dial for the smartwatch with two buttons on the right side of the case. It appears to have a metal casing with plain rubber straps in black and white colour options. The renders also suggest some features including heart rate tracking, step count, and support for multiple watch faces.

As per the report, the OnePlus Watch 2 will run on Wear OS 4, which will be a first for OnePlus and a big upgrade from the original OnePlus smartwatch. It will also have a 1.43-inch AMOLED display, as per the report. The watch is said to be powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon W5 Gen 1 chipset.
