Giants clobbered by Dolphins, 31-16, in latest embarrassment

The New York Giants faced off against the dynamic Miami Dolphins down at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens, Florida on Sunday afternoon in hopes of pulling off an upset that could rejuvenate their sagging season.

The Giants entered the game as 12.5-point underdogs to the Dolphins, who lead the NFL in offensive yards gained and total points through the first four weeks of the 2023 regular season.

The Giants played without Pro Bowl running back Saquon Barkley (ankle) for the third straight week and were also missing left tackle Andrew Thomas (hamstring) and center John Michael Schmitz (shoulder).

Needless to say, there was no upset and there was no rejuvenation. Instead, the Giants were smacked around and lost quarterback Daniel Jones (neck) in the process.

Studs and duds from New York Giants’ Week 2 win vs. Arizona Cardinals

Christian Petersen/Getty Images

Joshua Ezeudu was making his first-ever start at left tackle in place of Andrew Thomas, who was inactive due to a hamstring injury, so it’s difficult to rag on him too badly. He understandably struggled in pass protection, especially early in the game, and surrendered several pressures and at least one sack.

Some may feel I am coming down too hard on him by putting him in the “duds” column — and maybe I am — but expecting nothing and getting a little of something doesn’t make it a “stud” performance, either.

Stock up, down after New York Giants’ 21-16 preseason loss to Lions

The New York Giants opened the 2023 preseason on Friday night at Ford Field and fell to the Detroit Lions by a score of 21-16.

The game was a tale of two halves as the defense played above board over the first two quarters before deep reserves faltered late. There was more consistency on offense but that wasn’t necessarily a good thing as the O-Line struggled from the kickoff to the final whistle. The lacking depth there is a genuine concern.

But not all was bad. In fact, there was quite a bit of good, especially as it relates to the team’s 2023 NFL draft class.

Whose stock is up and whose is down after the preseason-opening loss? Let’s take a look.

Mike Mulholland/Getty Images

It’s Jason Pinnock kind of day on Giants Wire and across most Giants platforms, and deservedly so. The safety played just five snaps on Friday night before being pulled due to a stellar performance. How often do you hear that? Two passes defensed (one on fourth down), a tackle for a loss and an interception.

It was a brutal showing for the Giants’ offensive line outside of rookie center John Michael Schmitz. Korey Cunningham and Wyatt Davis were at the center of the struggles, routinely giving up pressures, QB hits and sacks. They also struggled to run block effectively. The one saving grace for Davis is that he saw time at tackle, which was out of position for him.

John Michael Schmitz pieced together a solid performance in his NFL debut and particularly excelled in pass protection. He was a little more spotty as a run blocker but played about as well as the Giants could have hoped. Of the team’s 2023 draft class, he had the best night and took another step toward securing a starting job.

Now on the bubble, it was an underwhelming night for Rodarius Williams. After finding his way back from various injuries over the past two seasons, Williams was inconsistent with his tackling and didn’t inspire much confidence as a whole. It was a step back after two solid joint practices with the Lions and it puts his future in an even more precarious position.

Jordon Riley was an under-the-radar star on Friday night. You’ll see just one tackle in the box score — a run stuff inside the 10-yard line — but his presence was felt elsewhere. The big-bodied seventh-round pick was eating up numbers along the offensive line and although no flags were thrown, he was drawing should-be holding penalties. It was a quiet performance that was actually quite loud.

Tomon Fox raised his stock while Oshane Ximines hurt his. He was unable to set the edge multiple times against the Lions and just generally seems like a liability against the run. His stock was further damaged by Fox producing more as a pass rusher (two QB hits to one) despite playing fewer snaps.

New York Giants drop preseason opener to Detroit Lions: 7 takeaways

Junfu Han/Detroit Free Press / USA TODAY NETWORK

The Giants suffered a few injuries in the game. Cornerback Cor’Dale Flott left the game early in the threw quarter with an abdominal issue and wide receiver Collin Johnson left with a knee injury.

“I don’t (know),” head coach Brian Daboll said when asked about the status of both injuries.

“I haven’t even talked to the trainers yet. Other than just on the field they told me they were out. Collin, I think was his knee, and I got to see what it was for Flott. (Giants CB) Nick (McCloud)’s stomach I think, something he got hit in the stomach, but I don’t know any — to the extent of it.”

Punter Jamie Gillan turned his ankle but returned to the game.

Offensive lineman Tyre Phillips missed the game with a leg injury.

“Yeah, he got dinged up,” said Daboll. “That was the leg I was telling you about in practice. I think I told you guys that one practice, him and someone had an ankle.”

How we graded Big Blue in Week 1 preseason loss

Lon Horwedel-USA TODAY Sports

Overall, the offense was abysmal. This was evident from the get-go. On the first two drives of the game, New York was given the ball in Detroit territory (awfully close to the red zone) and only converted six points.

Most of these problems stemmed from the offensive line which could not get any push in the run game, leading to Giants rushers averaging 3.7 yards per carry (2.3 yards per carry if you exclude Jashaun Corbin’s 33-yard scamper).

Things were even worse in the passing game as the pocket was always collapsing and Detroit was able to get home for 5.0 sacks. This was not great to see. While all of the skill position players will not likely be starters (other than possibly Jalin Hyatt), there were a couple of starting offensive linemen in from the beginning.

Nevertheless, the one positive is that rookie center John Michael Schmitz seemed very comfortable in his role and should be a solid Day 1 starter for Big Blue. Furthermore, when New York plays its skill position stars and the tackle duo of Andrew Thomas and Evan Neal, this offense will look wildly different.

Offense, defense and ST snap counts

The New York Giants opened their preseason with a 21-16 loss to the Detroit Lions on Friday night at Ford Field. The game featured solid defense play from Big Blue early followed by an especially ugly second half.

Depth issues along the offensive line are apparent but mixed in with all the negatives were quite a few positives. Chief among them was the play of safety Jason Pinnock, who played so well head coach Brian Daboll pulled him from the game early.

There’s a lot to break down and a lot to go over but before we look ahead, let’s look back. Here are the snap counts that contributed to the Giants’ loss.

Offensive snaps: 59
Defensive snaps: 72
Special teams snaps: 25

Korey Cunningham was the only player on the Giants team to take 100 percent of the snaps on Friday night and the tape isn’t going to look good. Like most of the offensive linemen outside of rookie center John Michael Schmitz, Cunningham put a lot of bad play on film.

Defensively, rookie nose tackle Jordon Riley took 60 percent of the snaps and unlike Cunningham, he put good play on film. It wasn’t perfect but the big-bodied Riley showed coaches he’s got some skills and with a little development, he might prove to be a diamond in the rough.

And then there’s the aforementioned Pinnock. On just five snaps he recorded an interception, a tackle for a loss and two passes defensed. Talk about production.

New York Giants waste two turnovers, fall to Lions in preseason opener

The New York Giants opened their 2023 preseason schedule with a late fourth-quarter loss against the Lions in Detroit on Friday night.

As expected, most of the key starters for both teams did not play.

Quarterback Tyrod Taylor, safety Jason Pinnock, and kicker Graham Gano were the Giants’ captains for the game.

Here’s a quick recap of the defeat.

Q1 Q2 Q3 Q4 Final
Giants 6 7 0 3 16
Lions 3 0 11 7 21

  • Poor tackling by the Giants allowed the Lions to extend and sustain drives to put crucial points on the board.
  • A special teams lapse allowed a 95-yard punt return early in the third quarter that proved to be the difference.
  • The offensive line was horrendous outside of rookie center John Michael Schmitz. The Lions dominated in the trenches.

Lions third-string quarterback Adrian Martinez plunged into the end zone from one yard out with 1:51 remaining in the fourth quarter to give the Lions a 21-16 lead, which they would protect the rest of the way.

The drive was aided by a phantom roughing the passer call on rookie linebacker Habakkuk Baldonado which gave Detroit a first and ten on the Giants’ 14.

Lon Horwedel-USA TODAY Sports

  • Quarterback Tommy DeVito. The UDFA from Don Bosco Prep in New Jersey showed exceptional poise and moved well in the pocket. DeVito finished the game with 15 completions in 24 attempts for 155 yards and a touchdown.
  • Safety Jason Pinnock. The third-year pro out of Pitt continued his quest to gain a starting spot with a stellar first few series that included an interception, a tackle for a loss, and a pass breakup.
  • Kicker Graham Gano was money in the bank again by hitting all of his kicks — three field goals (from 42, 47, and 48 yards out) and a PAT.

John Jones-USA TODAY Sports

Wide receiver Collin Johnson left the game in the second quarter with a knee injury and was ruled out. He was playing in his first game since tearing his Achilles last summer.

Defensive back Cor’Dale Flott (abdominal) was ruled out early in the third quarter. He was injured while successfully defending a pass in the end zone late in the first half.

Punter Jamie Gillan twisted his left leg/ankle landing after completing a punt in the third quarter. He returned to the game shortly after and resumed punting. The Giants do not have another punter on the roster.

Head coach Brian Daboll will hold a Zoom call with Giants beat writers on Saturday afternoon at 2:30 p.m. ET. The team will be off on Sunday before returning to practice on Monday morning ahead of a Week 2 preseason game against the Carolina Panthers.

Giants stock report: Risers, fallers after two weeks of training camp

The New York Giants are well into their 2023 training camp and several players have shone while others have not. And while there’s still plenty of time left and things are subject to change, a story is beginning to take shape.

Here is a quick list of “risers” and “fallers” since camp began two weeks ago.

1-handed INT ‘was crazier than what I thought’

The New York Giants may have not only found a starting safety this weekend, but a folk hero as well.

Jason Pinnock, a 2021 fifth-round draft pick of the New York Jets out of Pitt who the Giants signed off waivers last August, was the center of attention this weekend at training camp after an eye-popping interception.

On Monday, the latest celebrity spoke to the media and was asked if a former Giant who made a famous one-handed catch, Odell Beckham, Jr, reached out to him

“Nah, O didn’t reach out,” Pinnock said with a laugh, as per NJ.com’s Darryl Slater. “He might’ve been a little jealous.”

The interception came in the end zone on a pass intended for 6-foot-6 tight end, Darren Waller.

“It was crazier than what I thought,” Pinnock said after watching a video of the play. “It was kind of cross-body, so it looked dope. I ain’t going to lie. I’m not going to hype myself up, but it was a hell of a catch. It looked like I was doing a stride in air, like running in air.”

Pinnock also said his father, Louis, who was a former player, kept him grounded.

“Great catch, but it’s about what you do tomorrow,” his father told him.

And it will be, but tomorrow will be a little less stressful as Pinnick appears to be putting some distance between himself and rest of the competition for the safety opening next to Xavier McKinney.

Veteran free agent Bobby McCain and Dane Belton, a 2022 draft pick, are also in the mix for the job.

“In the end, it’ll come out, with whoever is out there on Sunday,” Pinnock said of the position battle. “Obviously, you know my goal here: I want to be out there.”

New York Giants’ Jason Pinnock grabs ridiculous one-handed INT at camp

There are great plays, and then there are plays like the one New York Giants defensive back Jason Pinnock pulled off at training camp practice on Sunday.

A 2021 fifth-round pick of the Jets, Pinnock is competing for a starting safety spot in his second year with the Giants and has been gaining momentum during the offseason.

So, he didn’t necessarily need a standout play like the one he made on Sunday, but it sure as hell will help.

The rep saw quarterback Daniel Jones, who was pretty much sacked on the play by defensive lineman Dexter Lawrence, loft one up to tight end Darren Waller in the end zone.

But Pinnock was having none of that and went up and snatched the pass out of mid-air with one hand, which promptly drew a proper reaction from fans and teammates.

Here’s another angle of the play.

So, that’s how you stop Waller, eh?
