Apple’s 12.9-Inch iPad Air Tipped to Feature LCD Panel Just Like 5th Gen iPad Air Model

Apple is expected to launch a new iPad Air in two display sizes at its upcoming launch event next month, alongside new iPad Pro models that could feature OLED screens. An analyst has just leaked details of the larger iPad Air variant, which contradicts their previous claims that Apple would upgrade the display technology used on the purported tablet, using leftover panels from the company’s iPad Pro. Apple is now expected to equip the 10.9–inch and 12.9-inch iPad Air with the same display panels.

Display Supply Chain Consultants (DSCC) CEO and Co-Founder Ross Young has contradicted his previous prediction that Apple would equip its rumoured 12.9-inch iPad Air with a Mini-LED screen, thanks to leftover panels from the 12.9-inch iPad Pro. According to earlier reports, Apple is likely to upgrade the iPad Pro with OLED screens, while the size of the displays is expected to increase slightly.

The analyst now states (via MacRumors) in a subscriber-only post on X (formerly Twitter) that both iPad Air variants will be equipped with IPS LCD screens, just like their predecessor, the iPad Air (5th Gen). Young further says that the decision was taken due to high costs involved with the panel upgrade.

Since Young’s previous prediction, Apple has announced that it will hold a launch event called ‘Let loose’ on May 7, where it is expected to launch new iPad Pro and iPad Air models. The Cupertino company is also tipped to introduce a new Apple Pencil with support for new ‘squueze’ gestures. The input device is also said to allow owners track the device via the company’s Find My network. Notably, Apple’s artwork for the event depicts an Apple Pencil surrounded by colours inside the company’s logo.

Instead of repurposing its leftover Mini-LED panels on the rumoured 12.9-inch iPad Air model, Apple might introduce a new iPad later this year, according to Young. There’s no mention of whether this will be an iPad Pro or an iPad Air model at the moment. The analyst says that Apple is likely to launch this model in Q4 2024.

Apple Tipped to Equip Purported 12.9-inch iPad Air Model With Mini LED Screen

Apple is reportedly working on a new iPad Air model that will arrive in 10.9-inch and 12.9-inch display sizes, according to recent reports. Details of the display technology on the larger 6th generation iPad Air model have now been leaked online, a month before it is expected to be unveiled by Apple. Ross Young, CEO and Co-Founder of Display Supply Chain Consultants (DSCC) has revealed that the purported 12.9-inch iPad Air will have a better display than its smaller sibling.

The rumoured 12.9-inch iPad Air model will be equipped with a Mini LED screen, Young claims in a post on X (formerly Twitter). This is a notable upgrade from the IPS LCD panel users on the 10.9-inch iPad Air (5th Gen) model (Review) that is currently sold by Apple. Mini LED screens will offer vastly improved picture quality compared to LCD panels, in terms of brightness and power consumption.

According to Young, Apple is planning to utilise Mini LED panels that were left over from the 12.9-inch iPad Pro models on the larger upcoming iPad Air models. Previous reports have suggested that the company’s next generation iPad Pro models will be equipped with OLED screens for the first time.

While this means that the larger iPad Air (6th Gen) variant is likely to arrive with a major display upgrade, it’s currently unclear whether the 10.9-inch model will sport an IPS LCD screen. This is because Apple’s smaller iPad Pro model is equipped with a slightly larger 11-inch screen.

The company could also increase the display size of the smaller iPad Air to repurpose leftover Mini LED panels, but we’ll have wait until the company unveils its next iPad models to learn more about their specifications.

This year’s iPad Air models are also tipped to debut with a landscape-oriented camera that will allow users to take video calls while the iPad is horizontal, unlike previous models. Apple is expected to launch new iPad Air and iPad Pro models in May, according to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman.

Apple 12.9-inch iPad Air Alleged CAD Renders Surface Online; Shows New Camera Design

iPad Air with a 12.9-inch display is said to be in the works. Apple is yet to announce any details about the new tablet, but ahead of it, a few CAD (computer-aided design) renders have leaked online offering a glimpse at the possible design of the iPad Air. The upcoming model seems to have a similar design language to the existing 10.9-inch iPad Air (2022) with a slightly redesigned rear camera unit. It appears to feature a slim body, a Touch ID button, and a USB Type-C port at the bottom.

91Mobiles shared the CAD renders of the rumoured 12.9-inch iPad Air. They suggest a slim body and an all-screen design for the tablet. It is seen with a speaker unit located on the top and bottom, a power button at the top, and a USB Type-C port at the bottom. The tablet seems to have a Touch ID button similar to the previous iPad Air models.

The 12.9-inch iPad Air appears to have a redesigned pill-shaped rear camera unit that protrudes from the rear. This new design resembles the rear camera unit of the iPhone X. The current iPad Air has a circular camera cutout at the rear.

Multiple sources have claimed that Apple is planning to release the larger 12.9-inch iPad Air around March this year. Beyond the bigger display size, the tablet is expected to be powered by Apple’s M2 chip and could feature an OLED screen. The current iPad Air has a 10.9-inch display. The new larger-screened iPad Air would match the screen size of the iPad Pro display.

Besides the new iPad Air, Apple is expected to unveil a new iPad Pro lineup featuring OLED displays by June. They could run on the latest M3 chip.
