Tecno Plans to Launch 24 New Smartphones in India Next Year, Aims to Be Among Top 5 Brands

Tecno, a leading smartphone brand of the Transsion Group, is eyeing to be among the top five smartphone brands in the Indian smartphone market by 2024, a top company official said.

The company is betting on premiumisation and is focussing on metros to achieve its ambitious goal, he said.

“The Indian smartphone market is maturing, and consumers are demanding more premium features and experiences. We are planning to launch 24 new models in 2024, of which 50 percent will be 5G-enabled.” said Tecno Mobile India CEO Arijeet Talapatra.

The brand is traditionally strong in tier II and cities below it for its affordable and feature loaded smartphones.

Ranked sixth in the Indian smartphone market, Tecno has witnessed a significant shift towards premiumisation in recent times.

The company’s average selling price has increased from Rs. 11,000-12,000 in January 2023 to Rs. 18,000-19,000 in December 2023. It is targeting a major growth in the Rs. 15,000 plus segment, with plans to sell 1.5 million handsets in 2024 compared to 7.5 lakh in 2023, he said.

“We are well-positioned to capitalise on this trend with our strong focus on innovation and design. Tecno’s foldable range will bring further strength with the Phantom sub-brand,” he said on the sidelines of the launch of the mass segment phone Spark Go (2024).

The company’s premium smartphone portfolio includes the Phantom series, which features foldable smartphones. “5G is the future of smartphones, and we are committed to making it accessible to a wider range of consumers,” Talapatra said.

Currently 96-98 percent of industry in the Rs. 15,000 plus categories are 5G-enabled and 55 percent of its 10k-15k models are 5G-enabled.

The company’s focus on premiumisation, tier I cities and metros, coupled with its strong 5G portfolio is expected to propel it towards its goal of becoming a top five smartphone brand in India by 2024, he added.

Nokia-Parent HMD Global Starts Manufacturing 5G Devices in Europe

HMD Global, the licensee of Nokia-branded smartphones, has become the first major smartphone company to manufacture devices in Europe, with its first 5G model made in Hungary — aimed at customers keen on data security — now available for purchase.

“We are thrilled to be manufacturing the Nokia XR21, our signature rugged 5G smartphone, in Europe,” HMD Global co-founder, chairman and CEO Jean-Francois Baril said on Tuesday.

“We are dedicated to investing in security, technology and manufacturing processes that make our devices more secure and longer lasting.”

Before HMD opened its Hungarian operations, Europe had no large-scale smartphone manufacturing as major companies like Apple and Samsung make their phones in Asia to cut costs.

HMD said the first European model was designed for enterprise customers, some of whom had requested additional security in conjunction with their IT security partners.

The company already stores data in the European Union, with consumer and corporate data from all of its smartphones held and processed on servers in Finland since 2019.

The company signed in 2016 an exclusive 10-year licensing agreement with Nokia Oyj, once the world’s largest phone maker, to make Nokia-branded smartphones and tablets.

It said in March it would start manufacturing in the European Union, which has been encouraging companies to set up production in key sectors such as semiconductors.

The Nokia XR21 European edition is priced from EUR 649 (nearly Rs. 56,500), the company said.

A limited edition of 30 units from the European production line in frosted platinum will be available for purchase from the company’s website from EUR 699, it said.

India Smartphone Shipment Declined by 10 Percent in July-September Quarter: IDC

Smartphone shipment in India declined by 10 percent to hit a three-year low of 43 million shipment in the July-September 2022 period, market research firm International Data Corporation said on Monday.

The 5G smartphone share reached 36 percent of total smartphones during the reported quarter with 16 million units at a slightly higher average selling price of $393 (nearly Rs. 31,900) apiece compared to $377 (nearly Rs. 30,600), in the previous quarter.

“India smartphone market declined 10 percent year-over-year (YoY) shipping 43 million units in July-September 2022. This was the lowest third-quarter shipment since 2019 despite an earlier onset of the Diwali festivities. Weakening demand and increasing device prices negatively impacted festive buying,” International Data Corporation’s (IDC) Worldwide Quarterly Mobile Phone Tracker report said.

IDC Device Research Associate Vice President Navkendar Singh said that the inventory pile up and post-festive cyclical demand tapering will lead to a muted December 2022 quarter and the annual shipment of 2022 is likely to decline by 8-9 percent to around 150 million units.

“The major challenges going into 2023 are the impact of inflation on consumer demand, increasing device costs, and slow feature phone-to-smartphone migration. However, the migration of 4G smartphone users to 5G smartphones should give a growth fillip to the market in 2023, especially in the mid-premium and above segments,” Singh said.

According to the report, online channels had the upper hand during the September 2022 quarter as they clocked a record 58 percent share, although with flat year-over-year growth with shipment of 25 million units.

“Multiple rounds of eTailer sales (The Big Billion Days on Flipkart and Amazon Great India Festival) were supported by preferential platform pricing, online exclusive deals, and offers and discounts. Amidst all the action in the online channels, offline shipments declined by 20 percent YoY as they struggled to generate demand while competing with aggressive online plays,” the report said.

MediaTek-based smartphones increased to 47 percent of the total market, while Qualcomm‘s decreased to 25 percent with UNISOC following at 15 percent.

Xiaomi led the smartphone market during the quarter with 21.2 percent share while Apple led the premium category with a 63 percent share in the segment.

Xiaomi maintained its lead, but with declining shipments of 18 percent YoY in the September 2022 quarter. More than 70 percent of shipments went to online channels, resulting in a share of 27 percent of the online channel (including sub-brand Poco),” the report said.

Samsung regained second slot with 18.5 percent share. It was followed by Vivo with 14.6 percent share, Realme 14.2 percent and Oppo 12.5 percent market share.

“The sub-$300 (nearly Rs. 24,350) segment underperformed, as shipments declined by 15 percent YoY. The premium segment of over $500 (nearly Rs. 40,600) continued to remain the highest growing price band with 64 percent growth YoY and 8 percent share. Apple led with a 63 percent share of that space, followed by Samsung with 22 percent and OnePlus with 9 percent,” the report said.
