Google Rolls Out Android 14 QPR1 Beta, Pixel Phones Could Display Battery Cycle Counts Soon

Google is expected to release the stable version of Android 14 next month alongside the Pixel 8 series smartphones. As we wait for the Pixel hardware event on October 4, the tech giant has pushed out the first Quarterly Platform Release beta (QPR1) of Android 14 to Pixel phones. If past updates by Google are any indication, then the Android 14 QPR1 Beta 1 is expected to see a stable release three months after its rollout. The latest update is reportedly bringing the battery charge cycle count on Pixel handsets.

Android 14 QPR1 beta is released and it is providing a preview of what’s in store for the next Pixel Feature Drop update. The build has version number U1B1.230908.003 and includes the September 2023 security patch. This update is rolling out to users who have enrolled in the Android Beta Program. The release notes mention several bug fixes alongside improvements to stability and performance.

Google Pixel 5a, Pixel 6, Pixel 6 Pro, Pixel 6a, Pixel 7, Pixel 7 Pro, Pixel 7a, Pixel Fold and Pixel Tablet enrolled in the beta program are eligible to receive the latest update. Users can manually check for the update by heading to Settings > System > Software update to get the new software. The old Pixel 4a 5G and Pixel 5 are not listed to receive this update.

As this is an early beta update, Google is warning that swapping SIM cards may cause a loss in cellular connection, and the battery level may temporarily show 0 percent in the status bar.

As per a report by 9to5 Google, the Android 14 QPR1 beta brings the ability to see additional battery data in the Settings beyond the typical charge level and usage statistics. A new “Battery Information” section will reportedly appear on Google Pixel devices showing details including the manufacturing date of the battery and the count of charge cycles. Users can access this by heading to Settings > About Phone> “Battery Information”.

Google usually launches a major OS update in a year, then follows that up with QPR1, QPR2, and QPR3 updates. If the company sticks to this pattern, Android 14’s first Quarterly Platform Release is expected to make its official debut in the next three months as the December 2023 Pixel Feature Drop.

Google Tipped to Shift Android 14 Release Date to October 4 Alongside Pixel 8 Series; New 3D Android Logo Teased

Android 14 release date might be shifted to next month, according to new details that have surfaced online ahead of its release. Google was previously expected to release the Android Open Source Project (AOSP) source code for the next version of its Android operating system on Tuesday. Android expert Mishaal Rahman has revealed that it could now arrive in October, alongside the search giant’s upcoming Google Pixel 8 series of smartphones. Meanwhile, Google revealed a new three-dimensional Android logo that will appear on Android smartphones and devices in the coming months.

According to details shared by Rahman on Wednesday, Google has informed original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) that the Android 14 Security Release Notes with details of the vulnerabilities that have been fixed will be released on October 4. He adds that the decision to delay the release was made “very late” and OEMs were expecting the code to arrive on Tuesday.

Rahman suggests that the new release date of Android 14 could coincide with the arrival of the Pixel 8 series — the company has usually released the source code of its next Android operating system ahead of the arrival of new smartphone models. Last year, Google released Android 13 and its source code in September, while the Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro were unveiled the following month.

On Tuesday, Google announced the rollout of the latest quarterly Feature Drop update. The first feature is called Image Q&A on Lookout, which provides audio descriptions for any image and allows users to ask follow-up questions. The At a Glance widget has also been updated with AI features to surface details of upcoming flights, weather, and other important information on the home screen.

Meanwhile, Google is also rolling out support for unknown tracker alerts — enabling Android phones to detect unknown and unwanted Bluetooth trackers from pinpointing their location. Gmail users will be able to use a new translation feature for emails, while WhatsApp users will be able to access their chats from their Wear OS smartwatch, according to Google.

Google has also begun updating the Android logo with one that shows the bug droid with a three-dimensional body, while the name is now capitalised. The company told TechCrunch that the refreshed 3D bug droid logo and the updated Android branding will begin to show up on smartphones in the coming months.

Google Pixel Devices May Get Bard AI as a New Homescreen Widget, Tips APK Teardown

Bard, Google’s ChatGPT-esque chatbot could soon find its way to Pixel smartphones and tablets. Google is reportedly preparing to expand the reach of its generative artificial intelligence (AI) chatbot by adding it to the company’s devices through a widget. A recent APK (Android Package Kit) teardown of Bard’s code indicates the arrival of the chatbot as a homescreen widget. Bard could be either integrated into the Google Search app or arrive as a standalone app. Bard can now code in 20 programming languages including Java, C++ and Python.

As per an APK teardown by 9to5Google, Google is working to implement Bard AI on Pixel phones and tablets. As per the report, the search giant is planning to add a dedicated widget for its Bard AI right on the homescreen, exclusive to the company’s devices. Bard could be either integrated into the Google Search app or come as a standalone app. It is likely to include suggested prompts for conversations, opening directly into the corresponding app.

Bard’s potential integration into Pixel phones could set the groundwork for a broader rollout of AI to all Android devices in the future. Since this has not yet been confirmed by Google, the information should be taken with a pinch of salt.

Google started the public release of Bard in March this year to gain ground on Microsoft in a fast-moving race on AI technology. Currently, Google’s in-house competitor to OpenAI’s ChatGPT can be accessed by a small set of users. Bard can code in 20 programming languages including Java, C++ and Python, and can also help debug and explain code to users.

Google is expected to make AI-related announcements at this year’s I/O conference. The annual event that is set to begin on May 10 will see the launch of Pixel 7a and the much-anticipated Pixel Fold.

Google Pixel 7a Unboxing Images Tip Arctic Blue, Carbon Black Colour Options

Google Pixel 7a is expected to launch soon in the market. It has been spotted on several certification sites over the past few weeks and have also made headlines for other leaks. Some reports have suggested key specifications of the purported device, and others have suggested features like design renders and colour options. A few reports have also suggested the price range of the upcoming handset. A new leak now shows live unboxing images of the Pixel 7a, hinting two new colour options.

A tweet thread by tipster account SnoopyTech (@_snoopytech_) shows the unboxing of the Pixel 7a handset in a series of photographs. In the images, the phone is seen in Arctic Blue and Charcoal Black colour options. The blue variant is reminiscent of the Barely Blue colour option that the Pixel 4a offered.

The design also shows a slightly raised rectangular camera module spanning the rear panel of the phone horizontally towards the upper edge. The raised platform is also seen housing the rear LED flash unit of the smartphone. The G from Google’s logo is seen in a centre-aligned position on the back of the handset, keeping the brand name design at a bare minimum.

According to a recent report, the Pixel 7a is also expected to launch in an orange shade that closely resembles the Kinda Coral colour option that the Pixel 6 smartphone launched in. The leak today, however, did not show this shade.

Expected to succeed the Pixel 6a, the Pixel 7a is likely to be powered by the in-house Tensor G2 SoC, paired with 8GB of LPDDR5 RAM and 128GB of UFS 3.1 inbuilt storage. The phone is also tipped to sport a 6.1-inch full-HD+ OLED display with a refresh rate of 90Hz.

The dual rear camera unit of the upcoming Google Pixel handset is likely to feature a 64-megapixel primary sensor with optical image stabilisation (OIS) support and a 12-megapixel sensor with an ultra-wide lens, alongside a 10.8-megapixel front camera sensor.

The phone has also been reported to pack a 4,400mAh battery unit with 20W wired charging support that is claimed to offer up to 72 hours of backup. It is also expected to support wireless charging. The Pixel 7a smartphone could launch at the Google I/O event on May 10 and be priced between $450 and $500 (roughly Rs. 32,000 to Rs. 40,000).

Google Pixel 8 Pro Tipped to Feature 50-Megapixel Samsung ISOCELL GN2 Camera Sensor: Details

Google Pixel 8 Pro camera specifications have been leaked online, months ahead of its expected debut. The successor to last year’s Pixel 7 Pro handset is expected to feature a camera sensor from Samsung that was announced by the company back in 2021. This suggests that the Pixel 8 Pro’s primary camera will have a 50-megapixel resolution. The Pixel 7 Pro and the Pixel 6 Pro were both equipped with the Samsung ISOCELL GN1 camera sensor, while the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra is equipped with Samsung’s latest 200-megapixel ISOCELL HP2 sensor.

Tipster Ice Universe (Twitter: @UniverseIce) claims that the Pixel 8 Pro primary camera may feature a Samsung ISOCELL GN2 camera sensor. This 1/1.12-inch sensor from Samsung was introduced in February 2021. It is a 50-megapixel image sensor that was claimed to offer better results in low-lighting conditions by simulating a larger 2.8-micron pixel size using quad pixel-binning technology. It also lets users record full-HD videos at 480fps or 4K videos at 120fps, and 8K video at 30fps.

It is worth noting that this isn’t the first time that Google’s Pixel 8 series of phones was tipped to feature Samsung’s GN2 sensor. Last December, developer Kuba Wojciechowski (Twitter: @Za_Raczke) spotted references to camera features of the Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro, that pointed to the inclusion of the same sensor on the upcoming smartphones.

Earlier this month, renders of cases for the Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro surfaced online, giving smartphone enthusiasts an idea of what to expect from the company’s upcoming smartphones. These renders suggest the Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro will sport designs and rear camera modules similar to their predecessors.

Next month, the company will host its annual Google I/O developer conference. If the company follows the same format as last year’s event, it could offer customers a brief look the Pixel 8 series, while the Pixel 7a and rumoured Pixel Fold are expected to be unveiled at Google I/O 2023 on May 10. While details of both handsets have leaked several times over the past few months, it is worth noting that the company is yet to confirm any plans to launch new hardware at the upcoming event.

Google Photos Working on ‘Unblur Videos’ Feature, May Debut on Pixel 8 Series: Report

Google recently introduced tools relying on AI and machine learning across the company’s suite of applications and services. While most of the new features have been on the software end, the Alphabet-owned search giant has also managed to leverage its Tensor 2 SoC, to introduce intelligent features on its smartphones, such as the Magic Eraser and Photo Unblur features for Google Photos on the Pixel 7 series. The company is reportedly gearing up to take this a step further by introducing a new feature on Google Photos that would allow users to unblur videos on their handsets.

According to a report by 9to5Google, Google is working on a new Video Unblur feature for Google Photos that will allow users to unblur videos through intelligent sharpening and noise reduction. The feature could initially be powered by the machine learning capabilities of Google’s in-house Tensor chipsets, and then expand to other phones.

Google has introduced machine learning-based image processing features on its Pixel smartphone devices, with the first such introduction being the Magic Eraser tool which debuted on Google Photos for the Pixel 6 series. This tool enables users to delete objects and change colour or brightness of objects in the image. The company was later seen expanding the feature to other devices, as long as they have a Google One subscription.

More recently, Google introduced a Photo Unblur feature on the Pixel 7 series, that debuted in October last year, allowing users to unblur photos through intelligent sharpening and de-noising. However, the feature has remained exclusive to Google’s latest flagship devices, the Pixel 7, and Pixel 7 Pro, unlike the Magic Eraser tool.

The team at 9to5Google reportedly managed to access the UI for Google’s Video Unblur tool. However, the tool currently has no effect on videos, indicating that the company is still working on developing the tool, as per the report.

Meanwhile, Google Photos is also reportedly set to receive new overlay effects for videos. The feature which could appear as a separate tab when editing a video on Google Photos, may allow users to add effects to videos, much like video filters seen on other photo and video editing apps. The effects are reportedly set to include 14 unique overlays, which include After School, B&W, Chromatic, Forward, Glassy, Golden, Moire, Multiply, Polaroid, Rainbow Rays, Reflect, RGB Pulse, Super 8, and VHS, according to the report.

Google Photos Updated With Magic Eraser Feature, HDR Video Effect for Pixel Owners and Google One Subscribers

Google Photos is adding support for Magic Eraser, the company’s machine learning and AI-based photo editing feature to edit out unwanted objects and people in photos, for all Google One subscribers, the company announced on Thursday. The feature was previously available only to owners of Pixel 7 and Pixel 6 series smartphones, simplifying what was once a tedious task that required the use of apps like Photoshop. The company is also bringing an HDR video effect and new collage styles to Google Photos on iOS and Android smartphones.

According to details shared by Google, the Magic Eraser feature that was previously exclusive to the Pixel 7 and Pixel 6 series of smartphones, will now be available to all Google One subscribers. The feature will be available to users across all plans. Owners of the Pixel 5a and earlier Pixel models will also gain support for Magic Eraser in Google Photos, without a subscription, the company says.

The Magic Eraser tool will also be available to owners of older Google Pixel models

Google’s Magic Eraser feature relies on machine learning and AI computing that is performed on-device for the Pixel 7, Pixel 7 Pro, Pixel 6, and Pixel 6 Pro smartphones. Users can remove people, or objects like fences and power lines from their photos by tapping, circling or brushing over them. On other devices that are not equipped with Google’s in-house Tensor SoC, these AI tasks will likely be performed on the company’s servers.

The company has also announced it will roll out an HDR effect for videos to Google One subscribers. Like the HDR effect for images on Google Photos, users will now be able to improve brightness and contrast on their videos, adding a dramatic effect. This feature, like the Magic Eraser tool, will be also be available to older Pixel models without a Google One subscription.

Finally, Google has revealed that Google One subscribers and Pixel owners will soon gain access to a new set of collage editor styles on the Google Photos app. These will include limited-time styles from artists like Yao Cheng Designs and DABSMYLA. Users will also be able to add styles to a single photo in a collage, according to the company.
