OnePlus Open Receiving Android 14-Based OxygenOS 14 Build in India

OnePlus Openwas launched in India in October last year as the company’s first foldable phone. The handset is equipped with a Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 SoC and runs Oxygen OS 13 based on Android 13. Now, the Chinese smartphone manufacturer is rolling out Oxygen OS 14 based on Android 14 to the OnePlus Open after extensive beta trials. The stable update brings new features including File Dock, Content Extraction, and Smart Cutout. OnePlus Open users who have participated in the beta programmes will receive the build initially.

The Android 14-based OxygenOS 14 update for the OnePlus Open in India was announced through a post on the OnePlus community forum. The update comes with the firmware version CPH2551_14.0.0.400(EX01).

The update will be first pushed to OnePlus Open users who have participated in the Closed Beta and Open Beta programmes and it will gradually roll out to the regular users. Users are advised to have at least 30 percent battery and 5GB of internal space available on their devices before installing the update.

OnePlus Open’s Android 14-based OxygenOS 14 update brings Aqua Dynamics with morphing forms for viewing up-to-date information quickly. It adds a File Dock feature with drag and drop to transfer content between apps and devices. The Content Extraction tool assists in extracting text and images from the screen with one tap, while the Smart Cutout feature lets users separate multiple subjects in a photo from the background for copying or sharing.

The OxygenOS 14 update optimises system stability and animations along with privacy improvements. It brings improvements to Shelf by adding more widget recommendations. The update brings aquamorphic design, aquamorphic-themed ringtones, and revamps the system notification sounds.

As per the official OnePlus community post, the update is being released in a phased manner and will reach all eligible OnePlus Open units running on CPH2551_13.2.0.301 automatically over the air.

OnePlus Open was launched in October last year with a price tag of Rs. 1,39,999 for the single 16GB RAM + 512GB storage configuration. On the specifications front, the OnePlus Open has a 7.82-inch (2,268×2,440 pixels) 2K Flexi-fluid LTPO 3.0 AMOLED inner display and a 6.31-inch (1,116×2,484 pixels) 2K LTPO 3.0 Super Fluid AMOLED cover screen. It runs on Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 SoC with 16GB of LPDDR5x RAM.

The OnePlus Open has a Hasselblad-branded triple camera setup, comprising a 48-megapixel primary camera. It has a 20-megapixel primary selfie camera and a 32-megapixel secondary camera. It is backed by a 4,800mAh battery that supports 67W SuperVOOC charging.

CERT-In Warns of Over 50 Security Flaws Affecting Android Smartphones: All You Need to Know

CERT-In — or Indian Computer Emergency Response Team — has warned of several security vulnerabilities affecting multiple versions of Android. These security flaws, if exploited by a malicious user, could be used to execute dangerous code, collect sensitive data, and launch a denial-of-service (DoS) attack on a victim. The security vulnerabilities affect three major versions of Android, across various parts of Google’s operating system (OS) — from the framework to components from Arm, MediaTek, Qualcomm, Unisoc, and others, according to the cybersecurity agency.

In a vulnerability note issued earlier this week, CERT-In lists out 51 security flaws affecting the Android OS. The nodal agency responsible for dealing with cybersecurity issues and threats has issued a critical severity rating for the vulnerability note. All the entries listed by CERT-In have been assigned a Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures (CVE) number.

According to CERT-In, these vulnerabilities affect Android 13, Android 12, Android 12L, and Android 11. It is currently unclear whether Android 14 is also affected as the source code for Android 14 was published a few days before the advisory was issued.

The 51 security flaws listed by CERT-In affect various parts of the Android operating system from the Android framework, the Android system, and Google Play system updates. Meanwhile, software for components not directly controlled by Google, including those from Arm, MediaTek, Unisoc, and Qualcomm, are also affected by these vulnerabilities.

Attackers who exploit these flaws could potentially elevate their privileges on a target’s smartphone, execute arbitrary (and malicious) code, extract sensitive information, and even perform a denial-of-service (DoS) attack, according to CERT-In.

Two of these flaws — CVE-2023-4863 and CVE-2023-4211 — could be actively exploited by attackers, and users should apply security patches “urgently”, according to the agency. These flaws relate to the Chromium engine that powers Google’s browser, and GPU memory processing operations on Android, respectively.

Users running on Pixel smartphones can install the latest update that includes the October security patches. Unfortunately, users who own smartphones from other manufacturers will have to wait until a security update is released along with fixes for these security flaws.

Google Tipped to Shift Android 14 Release Date to October 4 Alongside Pixel 8 Series; New 3D Android Logo Teased

Android 14 release date might be shifted to next month, according to new details that have surfaced online ahead of its release. Google was previously expected to release the Android Open Source Project (AOSP) source code for the next version of its Android operating system on Tuesday. Android expert Mishaal Rahman has revealed that it could now arrive in October, alongside the search giant’s upcoming Google Pixel 8 series of smartphones. Meanwhile, Google revealed a new three-dimensional Android logo that will appear on Android smartphones and devices in the coming months.

According to details shared by Rahman on Wednesday, Google has informed original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) that the Android 14 Security Release Notes with details of the vulnerabilities that have been fixed will be released on October 4. He adds that the decision to delay the release was made “very late” and OEMs were expecting the code to arrive on Tuesday.

Rahman suggests that the new release date of Android 14 could coincide with the arrival of the Pixel 8 series — the company has usually released the source code of its next Android operating system ahead of the arrival of new smartphone models. Last year, Google released Android 13 and its source code in September, while the Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro were unveiled the following month.

On Tuesday, Google announced the rollout of the latest quarterly Feature Drop update. The first feature is called Image Q&A on Lookout, which provides audio descriptions for any image and allows users to ask follow-up questions. The At a Glance widget has also been updated with AI features to surface details of upcoming flights, weather, and other important information on the home screen.

Meanwhile, Google is also rolling out support for unknown tracker alerts — enabling Android phones to detect unknown and unwanted Bluetooth trackers from pinpointing their location. Gmail users will be able to use a new translation feature for emails, while WhatsApp users will be able to access their chats from their Wear OS smartwatch, according to Google.

Google has also begun updating the Android logo with one that shows the bug droid with a three-dimensional body, while the name is now capitalised. The company told TechCrunch that the refreshed 3D bug droid logo and the updated Android branding will begin to show up on smartphones in the coming months.

Google’s June Update Brings New Features, Three Widgets to Android: All Details

Google has unveiled a slew of features for Android smartphones, tablets, and Wear OS smartwatches on Thursday. The latest improvements include three new widgets for Google Finance, Google TV, and Google New for customising the Android phone or tablet home screen. Google on June 1, announced the addition of new features coming soon to Android smartphones, tablets, and Wear OS smartwatches via a blog post. Google Play Books is getting a “Reading practice” functionality. This new mode will help readers improve their vocabulary and comprehension skills using their Android phones or tablets. With this, readers can hear the pronunciation of unknown words, practice mispronounced words, and receive feedback in real time. This is supported by e-books marked with a “Practice” badge in Google Play Books.

First announced at I/O 2023, the feature allows users to check if their details have been exposed on the Dark Web and receive guidance on the actions they can take to protect themselves online. Google One members in the US can scan for additional personal information, such as their social security number through the website and App. The Dark Web report will be launched in 20 countries in the coming months.

OnePlus 10R Receiving OxygenOS 12 A.03 in India, Fixes Always-on Display Issues, More

OnePlus 10R has started receiving OxygenOS 12 A.03 as its first software update in India since its launch. The update optimises the compatibility of the OTG connection and includes a series of upgrades along with usual bug fixes. The update brings improvements such as power-consumption optimisations in certain scenarios. The OnePlus 10R has received an improved rear camera experience and it is said to fix a recurring issue with the Always-On Display feature of the smartphone. As per an official post on the OnePlus forum, the OnePlus 10R handsets are getting an update with the firmware version CPH2411_11.A.03​ in India.

The update is around 200MB in size and includes new fixes for known vulnerabilities. The latest OxygenOS update brings system improvements like optimised compatibility of OTG connections and power consumption. The update offers a fix for the issue that caused interruption while pairing the smartphone with a computer for transferring large files. The OnePlus 10R gets fixes for an irregular screen brightness issue on the Always-on Display mode previously reported by users.

OnePlus has also provided some rear camera improvements in the OnePlus 10R by optimising the clarity of portrait photos taken by the rear main camera. The software update bundles the system stability improvements as well.

The update is being released in a phased manner and will reach all eligible OnePlus 10R units automatically over the air. Keen users can manually check for the update by heading to Settings > System > System updates. Users are advised to update their OnePlus 10R units while the smartphones are connected to a strong Wi-Fi signal and are charging.

The OnePlus 10R was launched in India last week in two editions with a starting price tag of Rs. 38,999. It features 6.7-inch full-HD+ (1,080×2,412 pixels) AMOLED display with 120Hz dynamic refresh rate. It is powered by an octa-core MediaTek Dimensity 8100-Max SoC, paired with up to 12GB of LPDDR5 RAM. The handset has a triple rear camera setup led by a 50-megapixel Sony IMX766 primary sensor.
