Google Brings Circle to Search, Magic Compose, More to Pixel 8 Pro With January Feature Drop

Google’s January Pixel feature drop is now available to download, unlocking new functionality on the company’s latest Pixel 8 lineup. According to details shared by the search giant, the January feature drop update comes with the new Circle to Search feature found on the Galaxy S24 series of smartphones that was unveiled by Samsung earlier this month. It also makes the thermometer sensor on the Pixel 8 Pro more useful, and brings generative AI features to the flagship phone.

With the January Pixel feature drop, Google has brought the new Circle to Search feature that arrived on the Galaxy S24 series to the Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro. You can long press the navigation bar — or home button — and circle, scribble, or highlight images and text on the screen to perform a search without leaving the app. This feature will go live on January 31, in time for the arrival of the Galaxy S24 series.

The Pixel 8 Pro is also getting a option within the thermometer app, allowing owners of the high-end Pixel phone to record their body temperature. Google says that the “medical grade” feature will let you record body temperatures of any person, but you can choose to store your own records using the Fitbit app. The standard Pixel 8 and older models aren’t equipped with this sensor, so the feature won’t be available on those handsets.

Magic Compose powered by Google’s on-device Gemini Nano AI model is also available on the Pixel 8 Pro with the latest feature drop. You can pick from four different writing styles — Chill, Excited, Formal, and Shakespearean. Similarly, the Photomoji feature is now available on all currently supported Pixel phones, allowing you to turn photos on your phone into emoji that you can use for message reactions.

With the January Pixel feature drop, Google has rebranded the Nearby Share feature to Quick Share, a feature offered by Samsung alongside Google’s feature. This change was previously announced by the company and will roll out to all Android smartphones in the future. Meanwhile, owners of the Pixel Watch 2 will now experience seamless switching between their devices, when they’re using the Pixel Buds Pro, according to the company.

Google’s December Pixel Feature Drop Arrives, With AI Features Reserved for Pixel 8 Pro

Google’s last Pixel Feature Drop for 2023, has finally arrived. It brings a ton of new features that will arrive on new and recent Pixel smartphones. Some of these updates also have features that trickle down to other Pixel ecosystem devices. While the highlight of this update includes some new generative AI features that use Google’s recently announced Gemini Nano AI model, these are currently tied down to the Pixel 8 Pro only. Still, there’s plenty to look forward to for those who own older Pixel devices as well.

Google today introduced its new Gemini AI model which has been made available in three different sizes – Ultra, Pro and Nano. According to Google, Gemini Nano is the most efficient model and is the one being used in the Pixel 8 Pro in particular to handle some AI generated tasks locally on the smartphone, without the need to be connected to the internet or the cloud. This includes a new Summarise feature in the Recorder app, which will deliver summaries of recorded conversations, interviews and more without connecting to the internet. Another Gemini Nano AI-driven feature is Smart Reply which has been made available in the GBoard keyboard app. The feature is currently available as a developer preview and works with certain apps only (will be coming to more apps next year). Pixel 8 Pro owners can demo the feature in WhatsApp currently letting them automatically generate replies based on the current chat conversation.

Moving away from the Gemini Nano model, the Pixel 8 Pro gains another feature that according to Google utilises its Tensor G3 processor. Video Boost will now be available for Pixel 8 Pro owners. After enabling the feature in the camera app, all users have to do is shoot a video like they normally would, while Google saves a separate copy of the same video in a different format. Once both videos are uploaded to the cloud, Google’s computational photography models will adjust parameters like colour, lighting, stabilisation, and graininess, helping make videos appear better. Video Boost also works with Night Sight video (once again on Pixel 8 Pro) resulting in videos that have richer colour and more detail once processed in the cloud. The end product is then downloaded back to the phone and replaces the original recorded video on it.

Both Pixel 8 Pro and the Pixel 8 owners will also get access to a new Night Sight timelapse feature (found in the same camera mode) letting them shoot timelapse videos with better dynamic range and overall clarity.

The Pixel Fold, apart from the new tools mentioned above, also gets access to a Dual Screen Preview. It lets your subjects view themselves when shooting a photo by looking at themselves in the second preview on the Fold’s cover display.

Moving to older devices (Pixel 7 Pro up to the Pixel 6a), a new Portrait Light tool is available in the Photos app that lets users get rid of harsh shadows and improve the overall lighting of any photos that are stored on the same app, regardless of whether it was shot on a Pixel or not. The Photo Unblur tool also gets some added functionality and now works with dogs and cats as well. Once again, this works regardless of where the source image comes from. Users can also use their Pixel phones as webcam by simply plugging in the USB cable into a computer and selecting ‘Webcam’ in USB preferences. There’s also a Clean feature which can help remove smudges, stains and more from scanned documents.

Repair Mode finally comes to Pixel devices

Photo and camera-centric features aside, Google’s push for passkeys gets stronger with Password Manager now being able to identify apps, services or accounts that support the same, letting you add them when available.

Call Screen, a feature that’s not available in India yet, now makes its way to the Pixel Watch. Owners of the Pixel Watch can now also automatically unlock other Pixel devices when nearby, reducing the need to manually enter a password to unlock them, in case your hands are busy. Users of the first gen Pixel Watch can now also sync their Do Not Disturb and Bedtime Modes from one device to the other. Pixel Tablet also gets AI-enhanced Clear Calling and now supports spatial audio with head tracking when connected to Pixel Buds Pro.

Last but not the least comes the much-awaited Repair Mode. The feature basically keeps your personal data protected when handing over your Pixel device to a service centre for repairs. It mainly reduces the need for users to format or erase their devices when getting them serviced.

You can head here to check whether your Pixel device supports a particular feature from the December Feature Drop. The update is rolling out gradually and will reach supported Pixel devices over the next weeks.

Google Rolls Out Android 14 QPR1 Beta, Pixel Phones Could Display Battery Cycle Counts Soon

Google is expected to release the stable version of Android 14 next month alongside the Pixel 8 series smartphones. As we wait for the Pixel hardware event on October 4, the tech giant has pushed out the first Quarterly Platform Release beta (QPR1) of Android 14 to Pixel phones. If past updates by Google are any indication, then the Android 14 QPR1 Beta 1 is expected to see a stable release three months after its rollout. The latest update is reportedly bringing the battery charge cycle count on Pixel handsets.

Android 14 QPR1 beta is released and it is providing a preview of what’s in store for the next Pixel Feature Drop update. The build has version number U1B1.230908.003 and includes the September 2023 security patch. This update is rolling out to users who have enrolled in the Android Beta Program. The release notes mention several bug fixes alongside improvements to stability and performance.

Google Pixel 5a, Pixel 6, Pixel 6 Pro, Pixel 6a, Pixel 7, Pixel 7 Pro, Pixel 7a, Pixel Fold and Pixel Tablet enrolled in the beta program are eligible to receive the latest update. Users can manually check for the update by heading to Settings > System > Software update to get the new software. The old Pixel 4a 5G and Pixel 5 are not listed to receive this update.

As this is an early beta update, Google is warning that swapping SIM cards may cause a loss in cellular connection, and the battery level may temporarily show 0 percent in the status bar.

As per a report by 9to5 Google, the Android 14 QPR1 beta brings the ability to see additional battery data in the Settings beyond the typical charge level and usage statistics. A new “Battery Information” section will reportedly appear on Google Pixel devices showing details including the manufacturing date of the battery and the count of charge cycles. Users can access this by heading to Settings > About Phone> “Battery Information”.

Google usually launches a major OS update in a year, then follows that up with QPR1, QPR2, and QPR3 updates. If the company sticks to this pattern, Android 14’s first Quarterly Platform Release is expected to make its official debut in the next three months as the December 2023 Pixel Feature Drop.

Pixel 7, Pixel 7 Pro Features to Come to Older Models via Upcoming Feature Drop: Report

With the Google Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro now announced there are some new features that will remain exclusive to the new smartphones that are powered by the company’s new Tensor G2 processor. Shortly after the launch of the successors to the Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro, a new report has claimed that Google’s next feature-drop will bring some of these features to older Pixel smartphones. The company regularly releases new feature drops for its Pixel-branded smartphones that add or enable new features, or improve existing functionality.

Google’s next feature-drop, according to PhoneArena is slated for December this year, and will reportedly bring some of the features we saw launched with the Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro models. One detail to take note of is that bigger features will only be arriving to Tensor-powered smartphones, which includes the Pixel 6a (officially launched in India), Pixel 6 and the Pixel 6 Pro models. However, there are a few others that will arrive on non-Tensor Pixel devices as well.

Clear Calling which is powered by the Tensor processor will be coming to older Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro models. The feature reduces background noise when on voice calls. Also included alongside clear calling is the new quick phrase letting users drop an incoming call by simply saying the word “silence”. Guided Frame which was also announced with the Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro smartphones will be coming to older Tensor-powered devices. It is an accessibility-related feature that lets those with poor eyesight snap a selfie by giving out voice commands helping them position the phone in real-time.

Real Tone, which according to Google accurately shows diverse skin tones is already available on the Pixel 6a, but improvements that have arrived for the Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro will soon be available on older Tensor-powered Pixels as well. Spatial Audio that is arriving via an update on the Pixel Buds Pro, will also be available on the Pixel 6 and 6 Pro models, as per the report.

Coming to the features that don’t rely on the Tensor processors, there’s the ‘At a Glance’ widget available on the home screen that will now show additional information along with already available information that is normally relayed via the widget. Audio Message Transcription, will also be coming to older non-Tensor smartphones including the Pixel 4a.

To recall, the Google Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro will go on sale in India next week. The phones have been launched at Rs 59,999 and 84,999 respectively and will only be available in single RAM and storage variants in India. Both smartphones run Google’s new Tensor G2 processor and come with subtle improvements over the previous Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro models which were not launched by Google in India. The new smartphones will go on sale on Flipkart on 13 October with pre-bookings already open.
