Manor Lords Mods Aren’t Even Supported Yet, But Someone Put Shrek in Anyway

Manor Lords launched for PC players late last month, and it only took about a week for modders to add Shrek as a playable character.

The animated ogre icon can now be used to terrorize innocent medieval citizens thanks to developer NorskPL on Nexus Mods. It’s a simple mod that allows players to control Shrek as part of Manor Lords’ third-person Visit mode. Parading around town as the green menace might be a bit immersion-breaking, but there is no denying that the character fits into the setting extremely well.

Manor Lords was one of Steam’s most Wishlisted titles for quite some time, so while developer Slavic Magic hasn’t officially added mod support, it isn’t much of a surprise to see players creating new content on their own. Of course, that also means Shrek is just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to some of the project’s currently available mods.

Some highlights allow players to control a Knight or even Kingdom Come: Deliverance’s Henry. Others push things a bit further, like the mod that adds The Witcher’s Geralt as a playable character. Most modifications, however, focus on gameplay tweaks for those who may want to alter the experience. There are also already a wide selection of custom Coat of Arms mods for Halo, Fallout, Berserk, Harry Potter, and more.

One mod in particular allows players to experience Manor Lords in VR. It’s a custom gameplay change so impressive that even developer Slavic Magic couldn’t help but praise it.

Manor Lords Early Access Launch Screenshots

With or without Shrek, we think Manor Lords is a good time. In our 7/10 early access review, we said, “Manor Lords is a gorgeous medieval city-builder that kept me occupied for hours building my perfect, cozy hamlets, but it definitely feels very early in its Early Access development.”

Helldivers 2 Fans are Making Cape Designs Out of Steam Reviews, and They Might Appear in the Game

With the PSN account linking fiasco now in the rearview mirror, what was nearly a disaster moment for Helldivers 2 is now becoming a part of community lore. Fans have been busy working on cape designs since Sony reversed course, at least some of which have seemingly caught the eye of the development team.

The movement began after Arrowhead CEO Johan Pilestedt noted an “accidental cape design” from a member on Discord — four red lines denoting Helldivers 2’s plummeting reviews over the weekend.

Another community member soon responded to Pilestedt’s post with a more refined design, leading to other fans coming forward with ideas of their own.

Since then, designs have rapidly proliferated. Over on Reddit, one Helldivers 2 fan made a full-blown concept they refer to as “The Prodigal Son.” The cape contains a visual reference to Helldivers 2’s Steam reviews and a description that reads, “The cape’s cropped length symbolizes the brevity of galactic conflicts, thanks to the efficiency of the Helldivers.”

The final blue arrow is a reference to what fans are calling “Operation Cleanup” — an attempt to reverse the effects of the review bombing campaign that sent Helldivers 2’s broadly positive Steam reviews plummeting. The effort has already pushed recent reviews to “Mixed,” which is a substantial improvement over the “Overwhelmingly Negative” sentiment that appeared over the weekend. More than a few fans noted the similarities of the red bars to Helldivers’ familiar drop pods.

Apparently inspired, the Helldivers 2 team appears to be working on an official version of the cape, though Pilestedt says they’re still thinking of a good name for it. Asked if it will be free, Pilestedt joked that it will be “$999.99 easy” before promising that it will “ofc be free.”

The community effort follows a three-day saga that began with the notice that Helldivers 2 would require Steam players to link a PSN account beginning May 7. The subsequent uproar included Helldivers 2 getting hammered by hundreds of thousands of negative reviews while being delisted in 177 countries. PlayStation finally backed down on Sunday night, saying that it is “still learning what is best for PC players.”

Now that the weekend-long fiasco is behind it, Arrowhead Studios is considerably more upbeat, with Pilestedt posting a photo of flowers sent by a community member. Earlier today, Pilestedt said that he was “impressed by the willpower of the Helldivers 2 community” while thanking PlayStation for acting quickly to roll back the unpopular policy.

One way or another, it seems like business as usual again as fans celebrate one of the biggest games of 2024. And even if the great PSN account linking debacle winds up being a footnote in Helldivers 2’s history, it looks like the community will have a way to remember it.

Final Fantasy 14 Servers Worldwide Hit by DDoS Attacks, Square Enix Working on a Solution

Final Fantasy 14’s servers are currently under a worldwide DDoS attack that’s preventing players from logging into Square Enix’s MMORPG.

In a blog post, Square Enix informed players that Final Fantasy 14’s technical issues began around 6 a.m. on March 6. As of right now, the DDoS attack may cause players to experience difficulty logging in, accessing/sending data, and disconnecting from Japanese, North American, European, and Oceania data centers.

While Square Enix has yet to pinpoint the cause of the technical difficulties, the developer has promised players that an investigation into the attack, as well as countermeasures is underway.

Today’s DDoS attack comes weeks after director Naoki Yoshida announced a graphical update was in development for Final Fantasy 14’s upcoming expansion, Dawntrail. The graphical update is a direct response to fans’ negative feedback over character model’s lifeless eyes in Dawntrail’s benchmark trailer.

The Best PC Games

In a follow-up blog post, Yoshida revealed Final Fantasy 14’s updated Benchmark Tool is slated to release either on May 23 or sometime later in the week. Final Fantasy 14’s DDoS attack also comes a week ahead of the game’s upcoming live letter which will showcase new jobs and patch note adjustments on May 16

Final Fantasy 14: Dawntrail launches on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC on July 2, with early access kicking starting on June 28 for those who pre-order.

The Top 5 Games That Benefit from NVIDIA Reflex’s Latency Improvements

A few years ago, NVIDIA introduced NVIDIA Reflex, a revolutionary suite of technologies that gave PC gamers better responsiveness and lower latency. For competitive games, that resulted in faster target acquisition, quicker reaction time, and superior aim precision. It did this by measuring and optimizing system latency.

For the uninitiated, latency is essentially the time between an action and its result. There are several different forms, though. For example, network latency happens in online play and is the delay between the game client and multiplayer server. You probably know this as “ping.” PC latency, on the other hand, is the time it takes your input to make its way through your PC. Basically, this is a combo of how long it takes your CPU to process input and your GPU to render the new frame. End-to-end system latency is the time between when you press a button and actually see the related action reflected on your screen.

This all translates to one simple idea: You want latency to be as low as possible. That’s where NVIDIA Reflex changes the game. Reflex’s Low-Latency Mode streamlines processes and allows games to be more responsive. To activate it, all you need to do is update your NVIDIA drivers to the latest version and then turn on the Reflex setting of whichever compatible game you’re playing. The Reflex setting is usually located within the graphics settings of the game. Once you’ve activated it, you’re good to go and can feel the benefits of reduced latency. Even if you can’t feel the difference in input lag, lower latency can help with improved hit registration and peeker’s advantage. To measure latency for yourself, you can download NVIDIA Frameview and check out the built-in PC Latency (PCL) metric, which updates in real time like a FPS counter in compatible titles.

Lowering latency is helpful regardless of what kind of game you’re playing, and NVIDIA Reflex is now reducing system latency in over 100 games. That includes single-player hits like Cyberpunk 2077, Diablo IV, God of War, Microsoft Flight Simulator, Red Dead Redemption 2, Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart, and Marvel’s Spider-Man Remastered. But Reflex really shines in competitive multiplayer games, where a millisecond can be the difference between victory and defeat. It’s compatible with popular titles like Apex Legends, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III, Call of Duty: Warzone, Naraka: Bladepoint and The Finals.

Without further ado, here are the five games that benefit most from NVIDIA Reflex:

5. Rainbow Six Siege

Rainbow Six Siege players know that crouching, leaning, environment destruction, and utilizing cover are key parts of the gameplay. That makes quick reaction time and responsiveness extremely important. When you’re sledgehammering your way into a room that has an enemy waiting, even a millisecond delay in getting your gun back out can mean death. Having Reflex on results in an up to 30% reduction in latency, which can make the difference in getting the jump on your opponent.

4. Counter-Strike 2

Maybe more than any other game, Counter-Strike 2 places a premium on each life. In most game modes, if you die even once, you’re done for that round. It makes for a unique gameplay experience, but also means that a split-second delay can make for an early exit. With Reflex turned on, CS2 gets up to a 33% reduction in latency, giving you a leg up on the competition. Hitting your AWP shots will be more consistent than ever, and peeker’s advantage won’t be nearly as strong for your opponents.

3. Valorant

With its combination of gunplay and agent abilities, Valorant gameplay is measured in milliseconds. It is absolutely key for the experience to be as smooth as possible, so you can focus on your next task rather than wondering whether your shot actually just landed. Valorant was one of the original adopters of Reflex technology and remains one of its biggest beneficiaries, with a latency reduction of up to 50%. This results in more accurate flick shots, hit registration, and punishing those pesky peekers.

2. Fortnite

The king of the battle royale genre, Fortnite is still going strong nearly seven years after release and remains one of the most popular games in the world. It was also one of the first adopters of Reflex technology and features one of the best integrations. It sees a latency reduction of up to 57%, giving you an advantage as you aim to be the last one standing.

1. Overwatch 2

Overwatch 2 has a staggering latency reduction of up to 61% with Reflex. It is the most significant difference of any game currently available and provides a level of smoothness and responsiveness that is unmatched. In a game when a well-timed ultimate is crucial, Reflex provides the boost needed to carry your team to victory.

Mortal Kombat 1: The Boys’ Homelander Gets First Gameplay Trailer

Yesterday, NetherRealm released the first gameplay trailer for The Boys’ Homelander in Mortal Kombat 1.

The trailer, which you can check out above, is a quick look at gameplay for the upcoming DLC character. Those who have watched The Boys will quickly notice that Homelander’s super strength and heat vision are present despite the trailer being less than a minute long. NetherRealm even went the extra mile to open the trailer with a bit of The Boys comedy, showing a scene of Homelander slurping milk from a baby bottle, much like was depicted in The Boys Priem Video series.

Although Anthony Starr, the actor who portrays Homelander in the Prime Video series The Boys, confirmed he would not be voicing the character in Mortal Kombat 1, NeatherRealm did secure Starr’s likeness for the character. Fortunately, NeatherRealm found an excellent soundalike for Homelander.

Mortal Kombat 1 – Homelander First Look Screenshots

Some Mortal Kombat and The Boys fans have reacted to the first trailer online, with many praising the character’s design, saying they are “not upset anymore” that Starr is not voicing the Homelander in Mortal Kombat 1.

NetherRealm is releasing a first look at Homelander as a playable character in Mortal Kombat 1, which comes a few days after Prime Video released a new trailer for The Boys Season 4, which premieres on June 14. Though the company has yet to reveal a release date, let alone a release window for Homelander, hopefully, NetherRealm plans to make the character available around the same time The Boys’ fourth season releases.

Homelander was one of six DLC characters in the Mortal Kombat 1 Kombat Pack, including Incincible’s Omni-Man and returning character Quan-Chi. The former, released last November, was quickly discovered to be equal parts broken and hilarious to play as.

In our review of Mortal Kombat 1, IGN wrote: “The bone-crunching gameplay of Mortal Kombat 1 is some of the best the series has ever seen, thanks to the game-changing Kameo system. Netherrealm delivers a fantastic single-player story mode as well. However, the new Invasions mode is a grind and the online options feel dated.”

PlayStation Reverses Course on Helldivers 2 PSN Account Requirement

PlayStation has reversed course on the Helldivers 2 PSN account requirement, walking back the unpopular policy after a weekend long backlash that included tens of thousands of negative reviews, some of which spread to Sony’s other Steam games.

“Helldivers fans — we’ve heard your feedback on the Helldivers 2 account linking update. The May 6 update, which would have required Steam and PlayStation Network account linking for new players and for current players beginning May 30, will not be moving forward,” PlayStation wrote on its official account.

“We’re still learning what is best for PC players and your feedback has been invaluable. Thanks again for your continued support of Helldivers 2 and we’ll keep you updated on future plans.”

PlayStation’s decision means that Helldivers 2 players on Steam won’t have to link a PSN account in order to play. The unpopular policy, which would have seen new players confronted with a mandatory login beginning this week, resulted in Helldivers 2 being delisted in around 177 countries. At one point, Arrowhead CEO Johan Pilestedt, clearly frustrated over the controversy, posted, “Waking up to the sunshine of yesterday replaced with a dreary drizzle and shivering winds makes me reflect on how I spent my time those rare few moments when all was perfect.”

Pilestedt said Sunday that Arrowhead was “talking solutions” with PlayStation, which apparently led to the decision to not move forward with the policy. Pilestedt also shed more light on the decision-making behind the scenes, admitting that it was his decision to disable account linking at launch so that players could play the game.

“I did not ensure players were aware of the requirement and we didn’t talk about it enough,” he wrote, saying that he was “not blameless” in the countroversy. “We knew for about 6 months before launch that it would be mandatory for online PS titles.”

As he has been throughout Helldivers 2’s release, Pilestedt was a vocal presence on social media, at various points apologizing to fans and say he “just wants to make a good game.” Helldivers 2’s recent reviews on Steam currently sit at “Overwhelmingly Negative,” dropping it to Mixed overall after a wave of review bombing that included more than 200,000 negative reviews.

Following PlayStation’s announcement, fans expressed hope that future games would not include the requirement. Others urged players to not take out their anger on Arrowhead.

“They ended up in the crossfire for this and it wasn’t fair to them as they were doing what they were contractually obligated to do,” one fan wrote.

PlayStation’s decision means that the focus can begin to return to the game itself, which up until now has been one of the most popular games of 2024 thanks to its unique approach to live service storytelling. Its breakthrough success has led to it selling an estimated 8 million units as of March 2024.

Helldivers 2 Pulled From 177 Countries Due to PSN Linking Requirement, Arrowhead ‘Talking Solutions’

As Helldiver 2’s reviews continue to collapse on Steam, Arrowhead’s best-selling action game has been pulled from around 177 countries in the wake of the new PSN account linking requirement that has turned its fanbase upside down.

Egypt, Georgia, Jamaica, and Morocco are some of the notable countries where Helldivers 2 can no longer be purchased due PSN not being available, sparking confusion among fans. Japan is also among the countries listed, but according to SteamDB it has a separate package and is still available, though users can’t buy the “global version.”

In the meantime, Helldivers 2’s recent reviews on Steam are now “Overwhelmingly Negative” amid continued review bombing by fans. On Friday, Arrowhead CEO Johan Pilstedt apologized for the requirement in a statement posted to X/Twitter, writing, “Ouch, right in the review score. Well, I guess it’s warranted. Sorry everyone for how this all transpired. I hope we will make it up and regain the trust by providing a continued great game experience. I just want to make great games!”

The controversy kicked off on Friday when Sony Interactive Entertainment announced that the “grace period” in which Helldivers 2 did not need to be connected to a PSN account was ending. Starting May 6, all new Helldivers 2 players on Steam will be required to connect their Steam account to PSN. Existing Steam players will begin seeing a mandatory login on May 30.

The requirement has sparked a massive online backlash against SIE that has continued throughout the weekend.

“What a clusterf*ck,” wrote independent developer Rami Ismail on X/Twitter. “For all my criticism of Steam — its incredible that they’re choosing to take the hit for Sony’s nonsense to ensure nobody ends up with a unusable game because of Playstation’s super limited accessibility globally. Absolutely terrible decision-making by Sony.”

PlayStation has yet to respond to the account linking controversy.

Arrowhead is “talking solutions” with PlayStation

Up until Friday, Helldivers 2 was a notable win for SIE, earning Game of the Year notice for its excellent community engagement. It’s been one of the best-selling games of 2024 to this point, with an estimated 8 million copies sold as of March 2024. Now its future may be in doubt as fans abruptly turn on the sensationally popular game.

Amid the anger, Pilestedt said that Arrowhead is working on a solution, but that the studio doesn’t have the final say.

“Is this the moment to tweet ‘What? You guys don’t have phones?'” Pilestedt asked on X/Twitter, referencing Diablo Immortal’s infamous reveal. “On serious note: We are talking solutions with PlayStation, especially for non-PSN countries. Your voice has been heard, and I am doing everything I can to speak for the community — but I don’t have the final say.”

The Arrowhead CEO, who has been actively engaging with fans since Helldivers 2’s launch, has been morose and even a bit poetic since the controversy began. “Waking up to the sunshine of yesterday replaced with a dreary drizzle and shivering winds makes me reflect on how I spent my time those rare few moments when all was perfect.”

“Yet rain is essential to growth and is what changes spring into summer. I will just have to wait for sunshine to return.”

Lord of the Rings Fans Mourn King Théoden Actor Bernard Hill, Dead at 79

Bernard Hill, who found fame as King Théoden in Peter Jackson’s Lord of the Rings trilogy and as Captain Smith in Titanic, has died. He was 79.

Hill died early Sunday morning, his agent told the BBC. His representative did not share the cause of death.

A long-time Hollywood veteran, Hill’s most recent role was in BAFTA-winning drama The Reponder alongside Martin Freeman. Over the years he’s appeared in a variety of movies including Gandhi and The Scorpion King, as well as Fable III.

But he remains best-known for his memorable turn as King Théoden in Two Towers and Return of the King. The role forever associated him with Lord of the Rings, though he admitted that he was “not interested” in Rings of Power, calling it a “money-making venture.”

Fans paid to tribute to Hill on social media, highlighting among things his epic speech in the Return of the King ahead of the Battle of the Pelennor Fields.

“Rest in Peace Bernard Hill — the man responsible for THE most iconic scene in cinematic history,” one fan wrote. “A sword-day, a red day, ere the sun rises! Ride now, ride now, ride to Gondor!”

Other fans noted his work on Boys From the Blackstuff, where he played Yosser Hughes in a “powerful unhinged performance” that “stopped an entire nation in its tracks.” Writer Alan Bleasdale told the BBC that Hill’s death was a “great loss and also a great surprise.”

“I was desperate to work with him. Everything he did — his whole procedure for working, the manner in which he worked and his performance was everything that you could ever wish for. You always felt that Bernard would live forever. He had a great strength, physically and of personality.”

After everything those, the power image of Théoden, rule of Rohan, looms large with fans and creators alike.

“I go to my fathers. And even in their mighty company I shall not now be ashamed,” wrote novelist Graham McNeill. “RIP Bernard Hill, you utter legend.”
