iPhone 15 Pro Overheating Fix Rolling Out Now Via New iOS 17 Update: All Details

Apple has finally released a much-awaited software update for its recently launched iPhone 15 lineup aiming to resolve the known heating issues. Tagged as iOS 17.0.3, the software update is about 423.2MB in size and can be downloaded by heading into General>Software Update> and checking for the same, which will push your iPhone to check for an update instead of waiting for a notification to arrive. While the update is mainly aimed at iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max users, it is available for both iPhone 15 and other recently launched iPhone models, as well. The same fixes have also been applied to iPadOS 17.0.3 as well.

The new iOS 17.0.3 update, according to the changelog, lists only two fixes. The first one is to do with a kernel exploit where an attacker with local access to a device “may have actively exploited against versions of iOS before iOS 16.6”. The second fix is to do with buffer overflow, which results in arbitrary code execution or the libvpx bug as it’s now known as.

The update also addresses an issue that may have caused iPhone 15 Pro models to run warmer than expected. This update along with an update to Instagram (version 302), which was known to be one of the apps that triggered the overheating issue for some users should cool down the iPhone of affected users. Other apps that were known to trigger overheating in the new iPhone 15 Pro models include Uber and Asphalt 9: Legends.

Apple did claim that the overheating with its new iPhone 15 Pro models does not pose a risk to the user. It initially also blamed the overheating issues to some other factors like high-power chargers, wireless charging, and background processes that take place after an iPhone has been restored. Apple told Forbes that the new fix would not throttle the phone’s performance in any way and that its overheating problems had nothing to do with the iPhone’s hardware design, which on the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max models replaces the stainless-steel outer frame with one made from recycled titanium.

The Apple iPhone 15 models launched alongside the new Apple Watch Series 9 and the Apple Watch Ultra 2. The iPhone 15 models are priced from Rs. 79,900 in India while the iPhone 15 Pro models start from Rs. 1,39,900.

iPhone 15 Pro Displays Tipped to Come With Thinner Bezels, Curved Edges

With the launch of Apple’s next iPhone models still several months away, the rumour mill is starting to catch up. Earlier leaks about the iPhone 15 Pro models hinted at solid-state volume and power buttons and the use of titanium (instead of stainless steel) for the frames. Now, a new rumour now tips at more changes to the display design hinting that it will feature thinner bezels and curved edges, but laid out in a manner that’s similar to the outgoing Apple Watch models.

A series of tweets by tipster @AppleShrimpPro, suggests the details about the displays of the upcoming iPhone 15 series. The tipster claims that the Apple iPhone 15 Pro models will feature displays with noticeably thinner bezels and curved edges. However, the curved edges apply only to the cover glass, as the displays below them are said to be flat. In all probability, it will have the effect of a curved edge display just like on the Apple Watch Series 7 and Series 8 models where the display glass seamlessly blends into the rounded side frame (or case). The iPhone 15 models are also said to come with flat displays and curved edge glass.

The tipster also states that the new models will feature the same display sizes as the currently available iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Pro models. Additionally, the standard iPhone 15 models are also tipped to get Dynamic Island cutouts that have been exclusive to the ‘Pro’ models launched last year. All models could also get the Ceramic Shield treatment as well like with the outgoing models. The source mentions that there are no expected upgrades to Dynamic Island with the iPhone 15 models.

Apple’s iPhone 15 Pro models are said to get the maximum number of upgrades this year as per a recent report. While TF Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo had previously explained in a note that the upcoming iPhone 15 Pro models would feature a new frame and solid-state buttons (with two additional Taptic Engines), he recently emphasised on the same giving out more details stating that the parts come from Cirrus Logic. He also explained that if users adapt to the new solid-state buttons, Apple could add them on more “high-end” models. The additional Taptic motors are said to simulate the feel of pressing down a button without actually moving the button just like Apple has managed to do with its trackpad on recent MacBook Air and MacBook Pro laptops.

With all the expected upgrades, Apple is also said to raise the price of its iPhone 15 Pro models in 2024. The base iPhone 15 Pro model, according to a recent report, is said to start from over a thousand dollars. The source explained that the reason for doing so is to broaden the gap between the standard models and the Pro models because the standard models are expected to gain more ‘Pro’-grade features like Dynamic Island and higher resolution cameras. Apple’s new iPhone lineup, going by tradition, is expected to be announced in September this year.

iPhone 15 Pro Series Could Feature Solid-State Buttons, Hints Apple Supplier: Report

Recent reports have hinted that the upcoming Apple iPhone 15 Pro may have a frame made of titanium with a rounded back. The material is more expensive than stainless steel that is found on recent and currently available ‘Pro’ models from the brand. Another note by analyst Ming-Chi Kuo also claimed that Apple would switch to solid-state buttons with the iPhone 15 Pro models and also include three Taptic engines. Turns out that an Apple component supplier may have just vaguely hinted at the same, leading to a higher possibility of solid-state buttons arriving on the next iPhone.

As reported by MacRumours, Apple supplier Cirrus Logic in a letter to shareholders confirmed that it would continue to “engage with a strategic customer” and that it plans to bring “a new HPMS component to market in smartphones next year.”

This component could be the company’s “high-performance mixed-signal chips”, which MacRumours claims includes haptic drivers for the Taptic Engine in iPhone models. Another vague hint comes from Cirrus Logic CEO John Forsyth, who on a recent earnings call stated that such a component would be coming to the market in “back half of next year,”. Indeed, all of the above news from the Texas-based semiconductor company lines up well with the launch of the next iPhone which, going by tradition, takes place every year in September.

Kuo in his earlier report claimed that Apple would add two of these new Taptic engines on the internal left and right sides of the next-generation iPhone models. These would provide haptic feedback similar to what was earlier available when pressing down on the home button of the Apple iPhone 7, which also featured a button that did not physically move, but gave the user the impression of being pressed using Taptic engine and vibrations. Apple is also expected to make the switch from its proprietary lightning port to the more common Type-C port in the second half of 2023.

While the idea of a button-less iPhone does sound exciting, Chinese smartphone manufacturer Vivo had also explored a similar idea back in 2019 with a concept device called the Vivo Apex. The smartphone featured no buttons or ports and relied on a technology branded as ‘Touch Sense’, which was a mix of capacitive touch and pressure sensing to get things done. A year later, Vivo followed up with a 2020 version of the Apex by adding a 3D curved edge display, which literally wrapped around the sides of the device and accompanied it with an invisible selfie camera that sat behind the screen.

iPhone 14 Pro Successor Could Feature TSMC’s 3nm SoCs, May be Most Powerful Phones in 2023: Report

Apple iPhone 15 Pro models will be the most powerful handset on the market in 2023, a recent report claims. Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company, commonly referred to as TSMC, will soon reportedly enter mass production with their rumoured 3nm SoC. The company stated that Apple would be its main customer for the 3nm processor in 2023, as per the report. The N3E version of the mobile processor is said to be available only after Apple launches the iPhone 15 Pro models, while Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 SoC could be the first 3nm chip to power an Android phone in 2024.

According to a report by DigiTimes, first spotted by PhoneArena, iPhone 15 Pro models will be the most powerful smartphones in 2023. The report cites TSMC’s N3E production schedule to share that Apple will be its main customer for the 3nm chips in 2023. Meanwhile, the company will reportedly deliver the new chip to other smartphone brands in 2024.

The report suggests that Apple’s iPhone 15 Pro lineup that could succeed the iPhone 14 series that is expected to launch on September 7, will be the first major smartphone lineup to feature the 3nm chips with the Apple A17 Bionic SoC.

Android smartphones could be powered by the first 3nm chip in 2024, in the form of the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 SoC, according to the report. Unlike Qualcomm, MediaTek will reportedly launch 3nm processors made by TSMC by the end of 2023. The report added that the new N3E version will not feature in smartphones before Apple unveils the iPhone 15 Pro models. The new 3nm processors are said to enter mass production soon.

Recently, analyst Ming-Chi Kuo shared that the iPhone 15 is expected to be mass produced in India and China at the same time in 2023. Kuo also said that the iPhone 14 series production in India is about six weeks behind schedule than China, but the gap is narrowing.

Apple is set to host the ‘Far Out’ event on September 7. The iPhone 14 series is expected to be unveiled during the launch event. The series is said to include the vanilla iPhone 14, iPhone 14 Max, iPhone 14 Pro, and iPhone 14 Pro Max. According to a report, the rumoured iPhone 14 Max could be launched with iPhone 14 Plus branding.
