Bitcoin Price Fails to See Big Movement Over Weekend, Ether Sees Dip with Most Altcoins

Bitcoin is currently trading at $29,205 (roughly Rs. 24.3 lakh) with a small loss of 0.76 percent on the crypto chart on Monday, August 14. Over the weekend, the world’s largest cryptocurrency did not manage to see any change in its pricing, owing to seemingly slowed down trading activities. For the fourth week now, the price of BTC has continued to stay under the price mark of $30,000 (roughly Rs. 24.6 lakh). With BTC seeing losses, most cryptocurrencies are also trading lowly on the price charts.

“Bitcoin futures trading volumes are at their lowest levels since December 2022. This shows that traders may have been avoiding making moves at the current levels,” the CoinDCX research team told Gadgets 360.

Ether slipped 0.45 percent in value on Monday. ETH, at the time of writing, was trading at the price of $1,840 (roughly Rs. 1.52 lakh).

“BTC and ETH continue to trade within their respective narrow ranges. The crypto market has traded sideways with downward pressure over the weekend and the last 24 hours. The market, overall, seems to be headed toward price stability,” Parth Chaturvedi, Investments Lead, CoinSwitch Ventures told Gadgets 360.

Following Bitcoin and Ether, majority altcoins registered losses on Monday.

These include stablecoins such as Tether, Ripple, USD Coin, Binance USD alongside memecoins Shiba Inu and Dogecoin.

Price dips also struck Cardano, Solana, Tron, Polygon, Polkadot, Litecoin, and Avalanche among other altcoins.

The overall crypto market valuation, in the last 24 hours, slipped by 0.10 percent to sit at the mark of $1.17 trillion (roughly Rs. 97,09,209 crore), showed CoinMarketCap.

Meanwhile, the crypto fear and greed index held steady at 54/100 throughout the weekend. The new week, however, did start with a slight dip of four points, which positioned the index at a 50/100, still within the neutral zone.

Among profit-minting cryptocurrencies, Binance Coin, Wrapped Bitcoin, Monero, Near Protocol, and Zcash marked their presence.

SushiSwap, Cartesi, Spell Token, and BrainTrust also saw small gains.

In other news, Coinbase unveiled its Base blockchain on Ethereum over the weekend.

The weekend also saw an exploit targeting Libbitcoin, which resulted in over $900,000 (roughly Rs. 7.4 crore) worth of Bitcoin being stolen from users’ wallets.

Sam Bankman-Fried had been trying against the revocation of his bail. However, it has been revoked, and SBF is back in jail before his trial in October.

Edul Patel, the CEO of Mudrex crypto investment platform also highlighted, “Hedera also experienced a remarkable price increase of roughly 15 percent within the past 24 hours, potentially attributed to the launch of their social networking platform, Calaxy.”

Apple Watch X Model With New Design, Magnetic Band System in Development: Mark Gurman

Apple Watch X is in development as a completely redesigned version of the company’s popular smartwatche, according to a report. The Cupertino company previously launched a revamped version of its smartphone — the iPhone X — in time for its tenth anniversary, and the Apple Watch could get the same treatment as soon as next year. The purported Apple Watch X will reportedly change how users wear the smartwatch, by swapping the existing locking mechanism for bands with a magnetic attachment system.

The new smartwatch has been dubbed the Apple Watch X by Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman in the latest edition of his Power On newsletter. Gurman’s sources say that the company’s next-generation smartwatch will sport a slimmer chassis, and that Apple is now considering a magnetic mechanism to hold the bands in place. A report earlier this year claimed that Apple would launch an advanced smartwatch with the same name in 2023, along with watchOS 10.

Until now, Apple Watch bands have used a press-to-release locking mechanism that has offered compatibility across generations. Replacing the existing band locking mechanism could mean that existing bands would no longer work with upcoming models, but the space freed up with the redesign could make way for additional internals or a larger battery for improved battery life.

Gurman has previously reported that Apple has been working on adding support for MicroLED technology to its smartwatches for several months, but the company is yet to unveil such a device. Gurman suggests that the Apple Watch X might be the first smartwatch from the company to feature these advanced screens. Another feature that is rumoured to be in development for a while now — blood pressure monitoring — could make its way to Apple’s next-generation smartwatch.

Customers shouldn’t expect the purported Apple Watch X to be launched in the near future — the company is expected to unveil the Apple Watch Series 9 alongside the iPhone 15 series of smartphones. While the handsets are set to bring a few notable hardware upgrades, the smartwatches are tipped to offer new chips and colour options.

Meanwhile, the Apple Watch X could be released in 2024 or 2025, according to Gurman. This is because the Apple Watch was unveiled in 2014 and went on sale in 2015, so the launch of the smartwatch could coincide with whichever date the firm considers to be the 10th anniversary of the Apple Watch. The company doesn’t announce any details of products that it plans to release except at the actual launch event, so enthusiasts will have to wait until at least next year until the Apple Watch X is unveiled.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 Is Still Coming to PS4 and Xbox One, Will Be a ‘Premium’ Standalone Release

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 will also be out on the previous-gen PS4 and Xbox One consoles, despite rumours suggesting otherwise. Confusion about a last-gen launch arose when TheGamingRevolution, a COD content creator tweeted out a picture from the Microsoft store, which only showed the Xbox Series S/X logo — unprecedented for the franchise, but makes perfect sense when considering that every major studio is slowly trying to take advantage of the newer consoles’ hardware. However, with the game’s teaser claiming that both PlayStation generations would be getting a release, it felt unfair to the green team. As it turned out, it was just an error on the Microsoft store, which has since been updated to include Xbox One as well.

For now, the website leads to Call of Duty: Warzone 2.0’s store page since that’s where publisher Activision has planned a worldwide reveal, scheduled for August 17. It’s going to be an in-game event, similar to those of Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War and Vanguard, both of which were unveiled inside the original Warzone game. An interesting thing to note here is that on Steam, Modern Warfare 3 was listed as an add-on, unlike previous reports which claimed that it would be a standalone $70 release. “As stated in numerous Activision Blizzard quarterly conference calls, Modern Warfare III is a premium release. It will be priced accordingly at $70 USD,” the publisher told reliable tipster CharlieINTEL in a prepared statement. The term ‘add-on’ had to do with how all CoD games would be packaged going forward — they’d all be accessible within the Call of Duty HQ launcher.

This also aligns with an InsiderGaming report, which claimed that beta codes for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 followed the same ‘concept ID’ as Modern Warfare 2’s — essentially, ‘last year’s game codes, just reissued.’ The central hub will display Call of Duty MW2, MW3, and Warzone on the same menu, making it more accessible to players and enabling content carry-over. It was confirmed that this year’s title would ‘Carry Forward’ weapons and cosmetic items such as operators and skins you unlocked in Modern Warfare 2. Players can also expect MW 3 content to be integrated into the battle-royale Warzone experience, while Call of Duty: Mobile has been updated to include shared progression across the mainline games. Further details on the latter will be revealed as we inch closer to Warzone Mobile’s launch.

Previous reports also mentioned that Call of Duty Modern Warfare 3 would get at least two beta weekends for multiplayer testing, with the first slot solely aimed at PlayStation — set to run from October 6–10. This may or may not change as Microsoft’s attempts to acquire Activision for $69 billion (about Rs. 5,72,571 crore) continue. The second beta weekend will allegedly run from October 12–16 and grants entry to Xbox and PC players as well, and there are seemingly plans for campaign early access for pre-order customers.

Call of Duty Modern Warfare 3 releases November 10 across PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series S/X.

Twitter.com Starts Switching Over to X.com; iOS Users Reportedly See Changed URLs

X — Elon Musk-led microblogging website formerly known as Twitter — is in a big transition phase. Its blue bird logo has been replaced with an X logo in July. Now recently, a user pointed out that URLs generated from the share sheet of the X app on iOS now begin with X.com instead of the earlier domain, twitter.com. Billionaire Elon Musk rebranded Twitter as X last month. The mobile application icon for Twitter on both Android and iOS platforms is now shown as X. The company later named tweets as posts.

Musk’s X might have started to shift towards X.com. As per a report by The Verge, URLs generated from the share sheet of the X app on iOS are now showing X.com instead of the old twitter.com. However, the Web link and Android app are redirecting users to the old domain as of yet. The company could change this in the coming days.

X owner Musk earlier confirmed that X.com would redirect users to Twitter. The Tesla tycoon recently rebranded Twitter as X and replaced its legacy blue bird logo with the single letter “X”. The company has then changed the mobile app icon for Twitter on both Android and iOS platforms to X. Now, the content shared by users, previously called as tweets, are known as posts. However, Twitter’s paid subscription is still known as Twitter Blue.

Musk took over the microblogging platform in October last year for $44 billion (roughly Rs. 3,40,800 crore) and has since introduced several changes to the company. He fired thousands of employees from different departments and started charging users $8 (roughly Rs. 600) a month to get the Twitter Blue subscription.

The company, which is struggling with its advertisement revenue, came under widespread criticism from users and marketing professionals in the first week of July when Musk limited the posts readers could view. He also restricted access to TweetDeck to verified accounts.

Google Pixel 8 Series Alleged Promo Video Tips ‘Audio Magic Eraser’ Feature, New Colour Option

Google introduced its Magic Eraser feature with the Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro back in 2021. This machine learning and AI-based photo editing feature used to remove unwanted objects in photos is now more widely available. The California-headquartered company could add a similar feature for videos in the upcoming Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro. An alleged promo video suggests the existence of ‘Audio Magic Eraser’ in the Pixel 8 series. The leak also indicates a blue colour option for the vanilla Pixel 8.

An X (formerly Twitter) user EZ (@EZ8622647227573) has posted the alleged promo video of the Pixel 8 series. The 14-second video teases a new ‘Audio Magic Eraser’ feature in the upcoming Pixel smartphones. The video shows skateboarders using a new feature to remove unwanted noise from video clips. The Audio Magic Eraser button is shown among the controls in Google Photos.

This promo video comes with the tagline “the only phone with Audio Magic Eraser” and Google’s existing line for Pixel handsets — the only phone engineered by Google. At the end of the clip, the Pixel 8 is shown in a blue shade as well.

Google released Magic Eraser in Pixel 6 series smartphones back in 2021. This functionality is designed to remove unwanted background elements from a shot with few taps. The company rolled out this feature to more non-Tensor-powered smartphones last year.

The Pixel 8 series is said to go official in October this year. Both smartphones are tipped to run on Android 14 and come with a 120Hz refresh rate display. They are expected to powered by a Tensor G3 SoC, which would come as an upgrade to the Tensor G2 SoC, used in Pixel 7 series and Pixel Fold.

The smartphones could debut in 128GB and 256GB storage options. The Pixel 8 Pro is expected to pack a 4,950mAh battery with 27W wired fast charging support. The Pixel 8, on the other hand, is said to carry a 4,485mAh battery with 24W wired charging and 12W wireless charging support.

Digital Personal Data Protection Bill Is Now Officially an Act, Receives President’s Assent

The Digital Personal Data Protection bill, passed by Parliament this week, has received President’s assent, Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said on Saturday.

Digital Personal Data Protection (DPDP) law aims to protect the privacy of Indian citizens while proposing a penalty of up to Rs. 250 crore on entities for misusing or failing to protect digital data of individuals.

Companies handling user data will be required to safeguard the individual’s information, and instances of personal data breach have to be reported to the Data Protection Board (DPB) and the user.

“DPDP Bill becomes an Act. Received Hon’ble President’s assent,” Vaishnaw said in similar posts on X (formerly Twitter), and homegrown app Koo.

On August 9, the Rajya Sabha approved the DPDP bill that introduces several compliance requirements for the collection and processing of personal data, has provisions to curb misuse of individuals’ data by online platforms, and entails up to Rs. 250 crore penalty for any data breach.

Data of children can be processed after consent from guardians, as per the DPDP law. The Lok Sabha had approved the bill on August 7. The government expects to implement the Act within 10 months, IT Minister Vaishnaw had said earlier this week.

The bill lays down the manner in which companies should process users’ data, and gives the government power to seek information from firms and issue directions to block content on the advice of a data protection board appointed by the Union government. It allows users the right to correct their personal data.

The bill applies to the processing of digital personal data in India, where the personal data is either collected in digital form or in a non-digitised format and subsequently digitised.

The bill defines ‘personal data’ broadly to include any data about an individual who is identifiable by or in relation to such data. ‘digital personal data’ is defined to mean personal data in digital form.

DPDP gives the government powers to exempt state agencies from the law.

“The Digital Personal Data Protection Bill, 2023 a bill to provide for the processing of digital personal data in a manner that recognises both the right of individuals to protect their personal data and the need to process such personal data for lawful purposes and for matters connected therewith or incidental thereto,” the DPDP bill said.

It moots creation of Data Protection Board of India to handle grievances of individuals around personal data privacy if data fiduciaries or firms using personal data fail to address individuals’ complaints.

AI Program Now Being Used to Spot Wildfires in California

California firefighters are using artificial intelligence to help spot wildfires, feeding video from more than 1,000 cameras strategically placed across the state into a machine that alerts first responders when to mobilize.

In an example of the potential of the ALERTCalifornia AI program launched last month, a camera spotted a fire that broke out at 3am local time (3.30pm IST) in the remote, scrubby Cleveland National Forest about 50 miles (80 km) east of San Diego.

With people asleep and darkness concealing the smoke, it could have spread into a raging wildfire. But AI alerted a fire captain who called in about 60 firefighters including seven engines, two bulldozers, two water tankers and two hand crews. Within 45 minutes the fire was out, Cal Fire said.

Developed by engineers at the University of California San Diego using AI from DigitalPath, a company based in Chico, California, the platform relies on 1,038 cameras put up by various public agencies and power utilities throughout the state, each one capable of rotating 360 degrees at the command of remote operators.

Since the AI program began July 10, Cal Fire provided other examples of AI alerting fire captains to a fire before a 911 call was made, though it did not yet have a comprehensive report.

Neal Driscoll, a professor of geology and geophysics at UCSD and the principal investigator of ALERTCalifornia, said the sample size so far was too small to draw conclusions.

Cal Fire hopes the technology can one day serve as a model for other states and countries around the world, a need underscored by unusually devastating wildfires in Hawaii, Canada and the Mediterranean this season.

“Its 100 percent applicable throughout anywhere in the world, especially now that we’re experiencing a lot larger and more frequent fire regimes and with climate change,” said Suzann Leininger, a Cal Fire intelligence specialist in El Cajon, just east of San Diego.

Part of Leininger’s job is to help the machine learn. She reviews previously recorded video from the camera network of what AI considers to be a fire, then tells the machine whether it was right with a binary yes or no answer. Any number of phenomenon can trigger a false positive: clouds, dust, even a truck with smoky exhaust.

With hundreds of specialists repeating the exercise up and down the state, the AI has already become more accurate in just a few weeks, Driscoll said.

Beyond the camera network, the platform is collecting vast amounts of additional information, including an aerial survey to quantify the vegetation that would fuel future fires and map the Earth’s surface beneath the canopy, Driscoll said.

Airplanes and drones are also collecting infrared and other wavelength data beyond the capabilities of human vision.

During the winter, the platform is able to measure atmospheric rivers and snowpack. The UCSD team is also capturing data on burn scars and their impact on erosion, sediment dispersal, water quality and soil quality, Driscoll said.

The data, which is available to any private company or academic researcher, could eventually be used to model fire behavior and improve as yet unforeseen AI applications for studying the environment.

“We’re in extreme climate right now. So we give them the data, because this problem is bigger than all of us,” Driscoll said. “We need to use technology to help move the needle, even if it’s a little bit.”
