Netflix Games to Add Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – the Definitive Edition on Mobile Platforms Next Month

Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition, the remastered bundle that contains three iconic GTA titles from Rockstar Games, is coming to Netflix, the streamer announced Wednesday. Starting December 14, Netflix subscribers will get access to the trilogy on mobile via App Store, Google Play, and within the Netflix app. Released November 11, 2021, for PC and consoles, Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition brings together three classic games — Grand Theft Auto III, Grand Theft Auto: Vice City, and Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas — with visual, gameplay and quality of life improvements. While the original games are available on both iOS and Android, this marks the first time the remastered trilogy is heading to the mobile platform.

Netflix subscribers can now pre-register to play the trilogy, the platform said in its announcement. All three titles in the remastered bundle are updated for mobile and will feature the enhancements present in the console version.

The announcement comes right in time for the much-awaited trailer release for Grand Theft Auto 6. Earlier this month, publisher Rockstar Games confirmed that it would finally reveal a trailer for GTA 6. Perhaps the most eagerly awaited video game in history, Grand Theft Auto 6 has spent years in development and dodged multiple leaks — including a major hack that outed in-development gameplay footage from the upcoming title.

Last month, Netflix was reported to be looking to add a Grand Theft Auto title to its games portfolio. The streaming platform had held discussions with Rockstar parent Take-Two Interactive over plans to release a GTA title for its catalogue via a licensing deal. Initially believed to be a new mobile GTA title, the talks seemed to have led to the remastered trilogy arriving on mobile.

Mobile versions of mainline GTA titles, which were later remastered for the trilogy bundle, already exist on both Android and iOS. Grand Theft Auto 3, Grand Theft Auto: Vice City, and Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas are available to download as part of the Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy bundle on Apple’s App Store and Google’s Play Store. To compare, the app bundle costs Rs. 1,199 on the former. With the mobile release of Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition, all Netflix subscribers will be able to play the three GTA titles, with upgrades to boot, for free.

Netflix is intent on adding more value to its subscription and is focussed on adding higher quality titles to its games service. Netflix Games is now a growing catalogue of over 80 mobile games across genres and has added acclaimed new mobile titles like Laya’s Horizon and Oxenfree II: Lost Signals this year. The streamer also intends to offer games beyond mobile, with game streaming being tested on PC, Mac and smart TVs.

Earlier this month, the streaming giant announced new games based on in its hit shows Money Heist, Shadow and Bone, The Dragon Prince, and more.

In India, a mobile-only Netflix subscription begins at Rs. 149 per month. The Basic plan, which offers streaming at a reduced 720p resolution comes in at Rs. 199 per month, while the Standard plan with full-HD streaming costs Rs. 499 a month. The top tier Premium plan is priced at Rs. 649 and offers 4K, HDR streaming quality.

Xiaomi 14 Ultra Tipped to Pack 50-Megapixel Quad Rear Cameras With Wider Variable Aperture

Xiaomi 14 and Xiaomi 14 Pro debuted in China last month with Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 SoC and the new HyperOS interface. Soon the Xiaomi 14 series will be joined by a third member — Xiaomi 14 Ultra. Ahead of any official announcement, a known Chinese tipster has leaked the camera details for the Xiaomi 14 Ultra. The upcoming handset is said to come with a quad rear camera unit like its siblings. The Xiaomi 14 Ultra is said to come as a successor to the Xiaomi 13 Ultra.

Digital Chat Station (DCS) (translated from Chinese) detailed the camera specifications of the Xiaomi 14 Ultra on Weibo. As per the tipster, the handset will feature four 50-megapixel cameras with f/1.6-f/4.0 variable aperture. This would be a notable upgrade over the dual aperture offered by its predecessor. The Xiaomi 13 Ultra also has a quad 50-megapixel sensor arrangement and it has dual aperture of  f/1.9 to f/4.0. The Xiaomi 14 and Xiaomi 14 Pro also offer variable aperture between f/1.42 to f/4.0 range.

Further, the tipster in a separate post claimed that native focal lengths of the Xiaomi 14 Ultra’s camera will be 0.5x, 1x, 3.2x, and 5x.

As per past leaks, Xiaomi 14 Ultra will go official in March next year with a 6.7-inch AMOLED screen with 2K resolution and 120Hz refresh rate. It is said to be powered by Qualcomm’s latest Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 SoC. The phone is expected to pack a quad rear camera unit, comprising a 1-inch Sony Lytia LYT-900 sensor. It is likely to be backed by a 5,500mAh battery.

The Xiaomi 14 Ultra is anticipated to offer improvements over the Xiaomi 13 Ultra. The latter was launched in April with a price tag of CNY 5,999 (roughly Rs. 71,600) for the 12GB RAM + 256GB storage variant.

Xiaomi’s 14 and Xiaomi 14 Pro handsets were launched in China in October. There is no official word yet on their global debut. The pair is powered by a Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 SoC and run on Xiaomi’s HyperOS interface. The Xiaomi 14 series feature LTPO OLED displays with up to 2K resolution and 120Hz dynamic refresh rate. They have a Leica-tuned triple rear camera setup. Both models feature up to 16GB of RAM and up to 1TB of storage. They also have an IP68 rating for water and dust resistance.

Apple Preparing to Shut In-House 5G Modem Development Months After Extending Qualcomm Deal: Report

Apple is planning to scrap its long-term project to develop its own in-house 5G modem chip, according to a report on a South Korean web portal. Citing supply chain sources, the forum user states that the iPhone maker is preparing to shut down the project completely. Recent reports suggested that Apple was struggling to create its own modem chip despite years of investment and talent acquisition, keeping the company reliant on other chipmakers like Qualcomm for modems for its smartphones.

In the post shared on Naver (via GSMArena), the user states (translated from Korean) that the Cupertino company has begun “winding down its ongoing investment in the 5G modem development department and personnel that it has been developing in-house for several years.” Apple was previously said to be working on a 5G modem chip that could arrive on a smartphone by 2025.

The company’s efforts to design its own modem chip for the rumoured 4th generation iPhone SE model appears to have been unsuccessful and is “expected to be completely cleaned up,” the post states. The claims made in the post have been corroborated by Revegnus (@Tech_Reve) a tipster on X (formerly known as Twitter), who claims that he received the same information from a Japanese source.

Earlier this month, reports stated that Apple’s plans to bring its own 5G modem chip to a smartphone were unlikely to materialise until the end of 2025 or early 2026. The Bloomberg report came months after Apple renewed its deal with Qualcomm to include the latter’s modems in its upcoming iPhone models.

Despite Apple’s successful acquisition of Intel’s modem unit for $1 billion back in 2019 and the company’s efforts to develop a chip that began a year later, the report stated that Apple’s attempt to design its own modem has hit several roadblocks over the years.

In addition to developing a chip without infringing on Qualcomm’s several patents, Apple also faced other challenges while developing its own modem chip. These included the ability to offer fast 5G speeds to compete with chips from Qualcomm — Apple created different versions of the modem and one of them did not have support for millimetre-wave (mmWave) 5G bands that offer much faster speeds than Sub-6 5G bands.

While there’s no public announcement from Apple on whether the company plans to continue developing its own 5G chip, recent reports suggest that the company is unlikely to include its own modem on the successor to the iPhone SE (2022) and might have to rely on Qualcomm or other suppliers for modems on its smartphones for the foreseeable future.

More Crypto Safeguards Needed to Prevent FTX Fallout Situation, Says Financial Stability Board

More measures may be needed to stop blow-ups at complex crypto firms like FTX from destabilising the wider financial system, the global Financial Stability Board (FSB) said on Tuesday.

The FSB, which groups regulators, central banks and treasury officials from the G20 economies, said turmoil in crypto markets last year when FTX collapsed highlighted how “multifunction” crypto firms, that combine trading and other activities, can exacerbate vulnerabilities.

The vulnerabilities are similar to those found in traditional finance, including leverage, liquidity mismatches, technology and operational vulnerabilities, the FSB said in a report.

“These vulnerabilities are further amplified by a lack of effective controls and operational transparency, poor or no disclosures, and conflicts of interest,” it said.

Evidence suggests that the threat to wider financial stability and the economy is limited at present, it added.

The FSB and IOSCO, a global body of securities watchdogs, have already published this year high level recommendations for supervising crypto activities.

Regulators, however, should assess whether these measures adequately stop risks from crypto being amplified across the financial system, the report said.

“Further work may be needed to enhance cross-border cooperation and information sharing and to address information gaps identified in the report,” the FSB said.

Google Play Best of 2023: Several Indian Developers Awarded for Top Apps and Games on the Play Store

Google on Thursday announced the company’s annual list of top games and apps on the Play Store in India. The Google Play Best of 2023 awards have focussed on apps that help users with personal growth, mental health, self-care, and online shopping. The company also points out that several developers are also leveraging AI to bring learning or wellness features to their apps — SwiftChat, Stimuler, and Level SuperMind are some of the Google Play Best of 2023 apps in India.

This year, Google Play’s Best App of the year is Level SuperMind, an app that is looking to bring the pursuit of optimal mind performance on par with that of physical fitness, while THAP: Your Happiness Gym was the User’s Choice App of 2023. On the other hand, Monopoly Go! was Google Play’s Best Game of the year, while Subway Surfers Blast picked up the User’s Choice award in the gaming segment.

Stimuler — an app that helps non-native English speakers prepare for IELTS tests — and chatbot-based learning platform SwiftChat were both awarded the Best with AI award by the search giant. In the Best for Fun category, Google picked Threads — launched by Meta earlier this year as a competitor to X (formerly Twitter) — along with social networking platform Pepul and comics app Dashtoon.

Another notable app that was selected as one of Google’s Best App(s) for Good award was Autism BASICS — an adaptive early intervention app that makes teaching and learning easy for parents of children with autism and other special needs.

Google has awarded gaming titles across various categories

The company also awarded apps designed for larger screens and wearables as part of the Google Play Best of 2023 list. Canva, Everand, and Concepts were the best apps for tablets, while FlipaClipEvernote, and Wideo were the top picks in the Best for Chromebooks category. Popular title Asphalt 9: Legends was the only title picked for the Best for Google Play Games on PC, while Viking Rise, Doomsday: Last Survivors, and Call of Dragons won the Best for Tablets award — Call of Dragons was also the only title selected for Best Multi-device Game.

Elon Musk says ‘go fuck yourself’ to advertisers leaving X

Your move, Linda. Elon Musk said “go fuck yourself” to advertisers who recently paused spending on X after he endorsed an antisemitic conspiracy theory on the platform.

Onstage at the DealBook conference, Andrew Ross Sorkin asked the X owner about these pauses in advertising. Musk replied, “Don’t advertise.”

“You don’t want them to advertise?” Sorkin said.

“If somebody’s going to try to blackmail me with advertising, blackmail me with money? Go fuck yourself,” Musk said. “Go. Fuck. Yourself. Is that clear?”

He then waved to the audience and said, “Hey, Bob,” referring to Disney CEO Bob Iger, who was also at the event.

Needless to say, it’s not an encouraging message for advertisers who are deciding whether or not to continue giving the platform their ad dollars. And it seems contrary to the strategy of bringing in an advertising industry bigwig like Linda Yaccarino as CEO.

“What this advertising boycott is going to do is kill the company,” Musk continued. “And the whole world will know that those advertisers killed the company, and we will document it in great detail.”

Throughout his tenure as X’s owner, Musk has sued or threatened to sue nonprofit organizations like Media Matters, the Center for Countering Digital Hate and the Anti-Defamation League, alleging that their reports are responsible for the increasingly tenuous relationship between X and advertisers. Companies that have paused or pulled advertising on X in the last few weeks include Apple, Comcast/NBCUniversal, Disney, Warner Bros. Discovery, IBM, Paramount Global, Lionsgate and the European Commission.

In the post that Musk described as “the actual truth,” an X user accused Jewish communities of spreading “dialectical hatred against whites.”

Musk did admit that his “actual truth” comment was “foolish.” He even apologized and said he is sorry onstage. But Musk is clearly not repentant about spreading violence-prone conspiracy theories. Just yesterday, he posted a meme endorsing Pizzagate, a debunked conspiracy theory that accused high-ranking Democrats of child sex-trafficking and inspired real-world violence when one Pizzagate adherent stormed a Washington, D.C. pizzeria with an AR-15. Musk has since deleted the post.

Per research from the Center for Countering Digital Hate, X has failed to moderate hate speech on its platform that promotes antisemitic conspiracies, praises Hitler and dehumanizes Muslims and Palestinians. Media Matters for America, a left-leaning media watchdog, also published a recent report showing how ads from companies like Apple, IBM, Bravo, Oracle and Xfinity have appeared next to posts that praise Nazi ideology. In a statement, X said that the report “completely misrepresented the real user experience on X, in another attempt to undermine freedom of speech and mislead advertisers.” X has since filed suit against the media watchdog.

Nothing, the Carl Pei-led company behind the Phone 2, is reportedly working on a new handset. The company recently made headlines because of the rise in security concerns surrounding its Nothing Chats messaging service. The UK-based OEM has not officially teased or confirmed a third smartphone but a new leak hints the purported moniker and design of the phone. Notably, the Nothing Phone 2 was launched in India on July 11 this year with a 4nm Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 chipset and a 4,700mAh battery with 45W PPS wired fast charging support. The phone succeeded Nothing’s first-ever handset, the Phone 1, which was launched in July 2022.

Tipster Sanju Choudhary (@saaaanjjjuuu) shared in a post on X, that Nothing is working on a new smartphone. As per its product cycle, it could be speculated to be the Nothing Phone 3 but the tipster insists that this model is rather the Nothing Phone 2a, which seems to carry the model number AIN142. The post also comes with a leaked design render of this purported handset.

The image of the alleged Nothing Phone 2a shared by the tipster gives a partial look at the back panel of the handset. It is seen with a dual rear camera unit, Nothing’s distinctive Glyph Interface, and a transparent rear cover like all Nothing smartphones.

As per the tipster, the Nothing Phone 2a is likely to come with a 6.7-inch AMOLED display with a centre-aligned hole-punch slot at the top to house the front camera sensor. Nothing more is known about the phone or its launch. It is likely that we find out soon if the handset is indeed in the making.

The last smartphone launched by Nothing was the Phone 2, which is available for purchase in two colour options – Dark Grey and White. The price of the model starts in India from Rs. 39,999 for its 8GB + 128GB variant, while the 12GB + 256GB and 12GB + 512GB variants are listed at Rs. 44,999 and Rs. 49,999, respectively.
