Lenovo Legion Go Handheld Gaming Console Could Launch in India Next Year

The Lenovo Legion Go handheld gaming console was launched globally at IFA (Internationale FunkAusstellung Berlin) showcase event in September. Powered by the new AMD Ryzen Z1 series of processors, the Windows-based device is set to go on sale in EMEA (Europe, the Middle East and Africa) markets this month. While there’s been no official word from Lenovo over a launch timeline for the Indian market, the Lenovo Legion India Instagram page seems to have hinted at a regional release window for the handheld. The Lenovo Legion Go handheld could release in India next year.

As per games industry insider Rishi Alwani, the Lenovo Legion India Instagram handle responded to a query about the handheld gaming device’s availability in India. Replying to X (formerly Twitter) user Shanthosh Somasunthar (@SSomasunthar)’s query about Lenovo Legion Go, the account said the device was expected to launch in India in March 2024. Alwani posted a screenshot of the interaction on X, providing some hint about a possible launch window for the console in the country. However, it’s worth noting that the Lenovo Legion India page referred to the device as “Lenovo Legion Go laptop,” which could either be a mistake or a misunderstanding.

As mentioned earlier, Lenovo has not announced the launch window or the pricing for the Legion Go handheld in India. The device is priced at EUR 799 (roughly Rs. 70,000) in EMEA markets and will be available in a Shadow Black colourway.

Gaming fans in India, however, can be hopeful. While handhelds are a niche in a growing gaming market in the country, popular products in the category like the Nintendo Switch and the Steam Deck remain sought after among dedicated fans. While Nintendo and Valve do not have an official presence in India, import models of the two handhelds are readily available via third-party sellers on e-commerce websites. In July, Asus officially launched the ROG Ally handheld gaming device in India. Priced at Rs. 69,990, the RC71L model of the Asus ROG Ally comes with an AMD Z1 Extreme processor, 16GB of RAM and 512GB of inbuilt storage, and a 7-inch LCD display. The handheld can be bought on the Asus e-shop or Flipkart, as well as the company’s Asus and ROG stores.

The Lenovo Legion Go comes with an 8.8-inch QHD+ display with up to 144Hz refresh rate. It runs on Windows 11 Home with Legion Space software on top. Powered by the new AMD Ryzen Z1 series of processors, the handheld packs up to 16GB of LPDDR5X RAM and up to 1TB PCIe Gen 4 SSD. The available storage can be expanded up to 2TB further through a microSD card slot.

Google App for Android Starts Testing Bottom-Aligned Search Bar for Improved Reachability

Google is testing a new layout for its search app for Android smartphones that will make it much easier to use the handset with one hand. As smartphone screens get bigger, many app developers have begun to move elements of the user interface — including tabs, search bars, and menu buttons — to the bottom of the screen. As part of a new test, Google has reportedly moved the search bar to the bottom of the screen for some users on the app.

Spotted by TheSpAndroid, the new test that brings the search bar to the bottom of the screen on Android was introduced on version 14.48.26.29.arm64 of the app. The company could move the search bar that is usually located higher up on the screen to the bottom. Screenshots shared by the publication show a much taller search bar that is located above the home, search, and saved icons.

The new location of the search bar on Android is expected to make using the Google search app on Android phones much easier — you will be able to start a search bar with your thumb and then either tap or swipe the keyboard, without using your other hand. The change could come in handy for users with large smartphone displays.

It is worth noting that the test is only available to some users who have updated to the latest beta version of the app — the latest stable version of the app currently available is 14.47.36. Gadgets 360 was unable to access the new layout after updating to the latest beta release via the Play Store, which suggests that the redesign is only available to some beta testers.

Google hasn’t made an announcement related to improving the reachability of the search bar on its Android app, and it’s too early to say whether it will roll out to the change to all users, make it optional, or set it as default. The company previously reversed a design change that brought the search bar to the bottom on Android, then allowed beta testers on iOS to move it to the bottom in August.

New Binance CEO Richard Teng Ensures Users on Asset Safety Post Zhao’s Exit

Binance, touted as the world’s largest crypto exchange, is undergoing a turmoil post the exit of its founder and former CEO Changpeng Zhao last week. Richard Teng, the former global head of regional markets at Binance has been designated as the company’s new CEO. In an address to the Binance community, Teng published an official blog ensuring users that their assets are safe and protected in the backdrop of internal changes at the company, that is headquartered in the US.

“Our capital structure is debt-free, our expenses are modest, and, despite the low transaction fees we charge our users, we have robust revenues and profits. From our proof-of-reserves system to our Secure Asset Fund for Users (SAFU) emergency fund, we are committed to ensuring you feel secure in the integrity of our platform,” Teng wrote in his first blog post as the CEO of Binance.

On November 21, Zhao announced that he was exiting the company. This exit however, was not aimed at propelling the crypto mogul into another project.

Zhao, as per the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), violated the country’s anti-money laundering laws. This reportedly led the firm and Zhao to conceal over 100,000 suspicious transactions with organisations like Hamas, al Qaeda, and the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria, all of which are categorised as terrorist groups by the US.

Before stepping down as the CEO, Zhao named Teng as his successor. Teng, since then, has been defending Binance’s financial status on X, claiming that the company has robust revenues and profits despite low fee charges.

“Over the course of the past two years, Binance has systematically worked to address its past compliance issues through a series of significant efforts to recruit, hire, and retain the right personnel to strengthen Binance’s compliance program and culture. I understand the unique challenges and opportunities that our industry presents, and I am dedicated to steering us through crypto winters and summers alike,” Teng’s blog noted.

Infinix Smart 8 HD is all set to go official in India on December 8. Just days ahead of its formal debut, the company, owned by China’s Transsion Holdings, has confirmed via a press release that the smartphone will have a Magic Ring feature. The Magic Ring appears to be a pill-shaped black bar that expands out of the selfie camera cutout. It will show animations for face unlock and also offer notifications. The new feature looks quite like Apple’s Dynamic Island and Realme’s Mini Capsule. The Infinix Smart 8 HD will join the Smart 8, which debuted earlier this month.

It looks like a centrally located elongated pill-shaped notch animation around the front camera cutout that can show animations and notifications. The Magic Ring can also be used to show real-time details such as charge completion reminders, call management, and charging animations, as per Infinix.

The Magic Ring resembles the Dynamic Island feature available in the iPhone 15 series and iPhone 14 Pro models. Realme also introduced a similar Mini Capsule feature in its Realme C55 that displays the phone’s charges status, data usage, and step count. The Infinix Smart 8 HD is claimed to be the first smartphone in the sub-Rs. 6,000 segment to pack the Magic Ring feature.

OnePlus 12 Camera Specifications Including Sony LYT-808 Sensor Revealed by Executive

OnePlus 12 camera specifications have been confirmed by a company executive, days ahead of the debut of the company’s flagship smartphone. The smartphone maker had previously teased the specifications of the cameras on the successor to this year’s OnePlus 11, including a Sony LYT-808 sensor for the primary camera. Meanwhile, the OnePlus 12 will also be equipped with the same ultra-wide-angle camera and telephoto camera as the OnePlus Fold and Oppo Find N3, the company has confirmed before the phone’s arrival in China.

OnePlus China president Li Jie shared a poster showing the complete specifications of the Haselblad-branded rear camera setup via Weibo, the Chinese microblogging platform. The company had previously teased that the OnePlus 12 will be equipped with a 50-megapixel primary camera with Sony LYT-808 sensor, along with other specifications.

According to the latest poster, the upcoming OnePlus 12 will be equipped with a 48-megapixel ultra-wide-angle camera and a 64-megapixel telephoto camera with 3x optical zoom support. Enthusiasts might recall that these are the same camera specifications as the OnePlus Open and the Oppo Find N3. The OnePlus 12 will also feature a 13-channel sensor that will be leveraged to improve the performance of all three cameras.

The company has already confirmed some of the specifications of the OnePlus 12, ahead of the December 5 launch date. The handset will be powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chip and will run on Android 14-based OxygenOS 14 out of the box. It is also expected to sport a ‘ProXDR’ display from BOE with a 2K resolution.

We also know what the OnePlus 12 will look like, after the company revealed the various colour options for the handset via its own website. These images of the phone are also displayed on the OnePlus India website and the company appears to have leaked the launch date for the smartphone in India via a contest page — the handset could be unveiled by the company in India on January 24, 2024. However, the company is yet to officially announce the launch date for the handset in the country.

Google Messages Get Support for Ultra HDR Images in RCS Chats: Report

Google’s Messages app has reportedly added Ultra HDR support in RCS (Rich Communication Services) chats. This functionality will allow users to share high-quality images in their RCS messages. The Ultra HDR image format is available on devices running on Android 14. Google’s new Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro handsets are among the first to receive the new feature. Google Messages app already offers features like typing indicators, and photo and video sharing among others.

As spotted by TheSpAndroid, Google Messages has gained support for Ultra HDR images in RCS chats. This would let users improve their messaging experience by exchanging Ultra HDR images on RCS chats. Ultra HDR is a new image format that is available on Android 14. Currently, Google’s Pixel 8 lineup is the only Ultra HDR-capable device available.

As per the APK teardown of the app spotted by the publication, the code “bugle.support_ultra_hdr” suggests support for Ultra HDR images in Google Messages. Google reportedly added support for Ultra HDR images back in September just ahead of the launch of the Pixel 8 series.

The Ultra HDR image format was introduced by Google with the Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro. It is a variation of the standard JPEG format with HDR metadata and offers a better image experience with detailed highlights and shadows. The Ultra HDR images can be viewed on HDR and non-HDR displays.

Google Messages already offers several messaging features including read receipts, typing indicators, inline replies, group chats, video calls, and more in RCS chats.

Google’s major rival Apple is planning to bring the RCS protocol to iPhone models in 2024. The new RCS standard will work alongside iMessage. It will debut on iPhone models via a software update next year and add a wide range of iMessage-style features to messaging between iPhone and Android devices.

WhatsApp Rolling Out View-Once Photos, Videos for Desktop Apps, Web: Report

WhatsApp already offers a disappearing messages feature that deletes a sent message after a set amount of time. WhatsApp users can also send photos and videos that can only be viewed once before being erased from the chat. The latter feature, however, is currently available only to Android and iOS users. The feature was previously offered on desktop and Web versions of the application but was removed for security concerns. Now, a report suggests that the social media platform is reintroducing the “View Once” photos and videos feature for WhatsApp Web and WhatsApp desktop versions.

According to a WABetaInfo report, WhatsApp is rolling out the view once feature for photos and videos on Web and desktop versions of the app. In a screenshot shared in the report, the button to set the “view once” option for the media is seen within the caption bar in the drawing editor on the WhatsApp for Windows platform. The report added that the company is enabling this “view once” photos and videos option for Windows, macOS and linked devices like iPads. The app is also extending this feature to the WhatsApp Web platform, according to the report.

The feature is now rolling out to eligible users. It has already rolled out to some users over the past few weeks as per the report. If you do not see the option on any of your desktop or Web apps yet, it is likely to come around eventually. Make sure that the applications are updated to their latest versions.

The report noted that the Meta-owned platform is reintroducing this feature on desktop and Web that they initially did away with, upon public suggestions and demands. The initial removal cited security issues. Feedback from users, however, suggested that the “view once” feature is a helpful aspect as it helps one view a media file without it eating up the storage space of the phone.

In related news, starting in December, WhatsApp backups on Android will continue to work, as long as users have available cloud storage space on their Google accounts. If someone reaches their storage limit, they will need to free up space on Google Drive to resume backups. Notably, if you do not want your chats to take up storage, you can turn on the “Disappearing Messages” option in the app.

WhatsApp has also added a service to prompt users to add their email address to their WhatsApp account. However, it will not be visible to your WhatsApp contacts but will rather work as a secondary identifier, after your phone number, where the app can send verification codes and the like.
