Wink Martindale wants to return to New York Giants in 2024

For the first time since FOX Sports’ Jay Glazer dropped a bomb and reported that New York Giants head coach Brian Daboll and defensive coordinator Wink Martindale were on the outs, the latter spoke to reporters.

Taking the podium on Friday, Martindale dismissed the report (and those that came after it), suggesting that no one on the outside of the building has a clue what’s going on inside.

“Yeah,” Martindale said point-blank when asked if he’d like to return in 2024.

Martindale had previously stated that the Giants aren’t viewed as a stepping stone but rather, a destination. He’s offered up heavy praise for team ownership and isn’t back off of that now.

“I still am (raving about this organization),” Martindale told reporters. “The Maras and the Tischs and this organization. . . I’ve said that this is not a stepping stone (but) a destination and it still is.”

Martindale also stated that rebuilding a franchise is a lot like constructing a skyscraper in New York City. For most, watching the erection isn’t as enjoyable as taking in the finished product. And given the team’s struggles this season, a lot of these reports are likely built out of that frustration.

“When they built the big skyscrapers over there in the city, they were putting in the pilings, that’s not fun to watch. It’s fun to go see the building after it’s done,” Martindale said. “Right now we’re still putting in the pilings in Year 2.”

Still, Martindale said, he has no idea what the future may hold.

“No one knows (what the future holds),” Martindale said. “I could go grab my golf clubs and go play gold in Florida. Hopefully, it’s a raise. Don’t we all want raises? . . . You just don’t know what’s going to happen. I can’t predict the future.”

Ultimately, Martindale says his relationship with Daboll is unchanged from a year ago and the negative reports anger him. But in the meantime, he will continue to show up for work until his key card no longer works.

3 reasons for optimism in Week 14

The New York Giants will return from their bye week to host the Green Bay Packers on Monday Night Football at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford.

Both teams are sporting a winning streak and the Packers are favored by nearly a touchdown heading into the Week 14 game.

The Packers are currently the final seed in the NFC playoff picture and certainly hope to remain in the hunt and control their own destiny moving forward.

Meanwhile, after two straight wins, although unlikely, it’s not out of the realm of possibility for Big Blue to make the playoffs. However, they certainly have a lot of work to do in order to reach that goal.

Monday night’s matchup will go a long way toward both team’s playoff hopes.

Here are three reasons for optimism heading into Monday night’s matchup.

There is in the air at MetLife Stadium surrounding Tommy DeVito.

When DeVito was announced before the Giants’ Week 12 win against the New England Patriots, fans roared as the New Jersey native ran out of the tunnel.

Jersey sales are soaring for the Giants’ third-string quarterback and he has really given fans something to cheer about in the midst of a disappointing season.

Certainly, there have been some positives in DeVito’s play as a starter for Big Blue; including back-to-back wins, which likely led to him being named the starter earlier this week.

It hasn’t been perfect, but the fans are coming together around the story of the quarterback they call ‘Tommy Cutlets.’

The Packers have not turned the ball over during their three-game winning streak.

The Giants’ defense will be a real test as they have won the turnover battle in three straight games and have forced nine turnovers during their two-game winning streak.

With the Packers playing the way they are, expect Wink Martindale to draw up some blitzes to get pressure on Jordan Love and make him uncomfortable to try and force the Packers to make a mistake.

Running back Aaron Jones and wide receiver Christian Watson are currently questionable for Monday’s game. Those are two pretty big playmakers to be in question for this matchup.

Even if either of them plays, they won’t be at 100% percent and certainly, that would be a big challenge for Love to overcome.

With some Green Bay playmakers banged up, the Giants’ defense could shine in this one.

Dexter Lawrence takes step toward return

The New York Giants returned to the practice field on Wednesday and then had off on Thursday ahead of a Week 14 game against the Green Bay Packers on Monday Night Football.

On Wednesday, nose tackle Dexter Lawrence and right tackle Evan Neal were not participating due to their respective injuries.

Head coach Brian Daboll did express hope that Lawrence could return to practice on Friday, but shared far less optimism as it related to Neal.

“Yeah, I’m hopeful. I’m hopeful he’ll be out here on Friday. That’s what I’m hoping,” Daboll said told reporters.

True to his word, Lawrence took a projected step forward on Thursday and was listed as a projected participant in practice. Neal, on the other hand, remained out.

If Neal misses Monday night’s game, it will be his fourth in a row and sixth in seven games.

Meanwhile, Daboll indicated that tight end Darren Waller would remain on injured reserve (IR) for one more week and hinted that cornerback Aaron Robinson may not play at all this season.

“Not sure,” Daboll said when asked if Robinson would come off the Physically Unable to Perform (PUP) list.

The Giants’ full (projected) Thursday injury report can be found below:

Did not participate: OL Evan Neal (ankle)

Limited participant: NT Dexter Lawrence (hamstring), DL A’Shawn Robinson (hamstring), LB Isaiah Simmons (ankle)

Full participant: QB Tyrod Taylor (ribs), LB Carter Coughlin (hip)

Giants vs. Packers: 6 keys to victory in Week 14

The New York Giants rolled into the bye week with momentum after defeating the Washington Commanders and New England Patriots back-to-back.

The week off gave injured players some much-needed rest and a chance to rehab their bodies. They return to the field this week when they host the Green Bay Packers on Monday Night Football.

The Packers are having a better season than most anticipated, and it’s not just because of Jordan Love.

If the Giants want to keep their winning momentum this week, there are six things they must do to beat the Packers.

3 best player prop bets for Week 14

The New York Giants (4-8) host the Green Bay Packers (6-6) at MetLife Stadium this coming Monday night in a game that could have postseason ramifications.

The betting populace will be zoning in on this nationally televised game, but what should they be looking at?

Here are three prop bets you might want to consider, per BetMGM.

Brad Penner-USA TODAY Sports

Not much of a risk, but a very winnable bet. Saquon Barkley has only gone over 100 yards on the ground once this season (against the Jets in Week 8) but is still averaging 77.4 yards per game.

He faces a sieve of a rushing defense this week in the Packers, who have allowed 160.7 rushing yards per game over their last four.

With the Giants coming off a bye and seeking to feature Barkley in the offense, this seems like a solid play.

Mark Hoffman/Milwaukee Journal Sentinel

Again, not going to break the back with this one. Most will be betting over based on Jordan Love’s recent rise, which has seen him average 286.5 yards per game over his past four.

But they are not taking into consideration the Giants’ performance against the pass this year. They have allowed over 230 yards passing in just three of their 12 games and those were against Dak Prescott, Tua Tagovailoa, and Brock Purdy. They’ve contained everyone else.

Kirby Lee-USA TODAY Sports

Romeo Doubs is the Packers’ leader in targets and receptions and is averaging 42.1 yards receiving per game. Jayden Reed is averaging 42.8.

Both players could eclipse this number, especially if Christian Watson (hamstring) is listed as doubtful or out.

Giants have allowed the fifth-most fantasy points to wide receivers this year, so this is a good spot for both players.

Meanwhile, the Giants are on primetime again and will square off with the red-hot Green Bay Packers. Do they stand a chance or will the primetime curse continue?

We also put to bed any talk of the playoffs. The Giants aren’t technically out of it but too much of what they needed has not gone their way.

Those topics (and more) are discussed in the latest episode of the Giants Wire Podcast, which is hosted by Ryan O’Leary (@RyanO_Leary on X) and joined by site editor Dan Benton (@TheGiantsWire).

Could New York Giants part with all three coordinators this offseason?

The New York Giants are almost certain to undergo some changes after their 4-8 start to this season which is surely leading to the Giants drafting in the top-10 at the NFL draft next April.

Head coach Brian Daboll seems secure (for now) but his coordinators may be in trouble. The rift in the relationship between Daboll and defensive coordinator Wink Martindale is well-documented and surely headed for a parting of ways.

However, Dan Duggan of The Athletic believes that isn’t as obvious as it may appear.

Daboll would definitely chip away at his public support if he cut ties with the popular Martindale. And it would be a tough look for Daboll’s leadership ability if he has to replace all three coordinators, especially if the departures of Martindale (and others) are personality-related. That’s why I think ownership will try to mediate the relationship with Martindale, unless it’s past the point of no return, which is what Jay Glazer’s report indicated.

The Giants’ offense has been putrid this season and ranks among the worst in the franchise’s 99-year history. Coordinator Mike Kafka, who was a hot commodity after last season on the NFL head coaching carousel,  could be out fielding job offers once again come this January.

Duggan believes the Giants could replace Kakfa with quarterbacks coach Shea Tierney, a close Daboll ally.

It would be scapegoating offensive coordinator Mike Kafka to fire him since head coach Brian Daboll is so heavily involved in the offense. But it wasn’t a good sign for Kafka that Daboll took a more hands-on role with the offense midway through the season, which came after speculation about the head coach taking over play-calling in the second half of the Week 2 comeback win over the Cardinals. It’s not hard to imagine Daboll taking the reins of the offense as he enters a pivotal third season.

Finally, this could be the final season for special teams coordinator Thomas McGaughey as the Giants’ quality of play on specials has dropped dramatically this season.

Special teams coordinator Thomas McGaughey’s days are numbered. He has spent 10 years with the Giants over two stints, with his current run beginning in 2018. Surviving two coaching changes is an impressive feat, and it speaks to the regard top brass has for him…But the writing has been on the wall for McGaughey, as his units have been involved in too many disastrous plays this season.

The Giants will likely make changes to at least two of the three units as they continue to search for the right combination for success.

One player New York Giants would steal from Packers

The New York Giants (4-8) will host the Green Bay Packers (6-6) at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey this coming Monday night.

That, of course, provides those of us here at Giants Wire the opportunity to hypothetically steal from the Packers’ roster in search of depth and/or talent upgrades for Big Blue.

In looking over Green Bay’s depth chart, there doesn’t appear to be an overwhelming amount of elite talent but there sure is a good amount of solid, above-average talent.

Quarterback Jordan Love seems like the most obvious player to steal with other options including offensive tackle Zach Tom, guard Elgton Jenkins, safety Rudy Ford and edge rusher Preston Smith.

While Love is extremely tempting, it’s edge rusher Rashan Gary that we’re stealing.

The Giants have struggled to generate organic pressure outside of linebacker Kayvon Thibodeaux, which has actually hindered his production despite accumulating 11 sacks so far this season. Gary’s presence would immediately prevent Thibs from facing double teams, adding to the overall effectiveness of the defense.

Gary is also a very productive all-around player himself. He excels as a pass rusher but is above average against the run and in coverage.

In 12 games this season, Gary has recorded 34 tackles (17 solo, six for a loss), two forced fumbles, one pass defensed, 17 QB hits, and 9.0 sacks.

What are your thoughts, Giants fans? Would you pick Rashan Gary or would you steal an entirely different player from the Packers?
