Apple Probing Screen ‘Flickering’ Issue Impacting Apple Watch Series 9, Watch Ultra 2: Report

Apple is reportedly probing complaints of screen flickering affecting two Apple Watch models running on watchOS 10. The California-based company has asked Apple Authorized Service Providers to refrain from repairing Apple Watch Series 9 and Apple Watch Ultra 2 models and ask customers to make sure their affected models are updated to the latest version, according to a report. Apple is expected to roll out watchOS 10.1, the first notable software update for its operating system for smartwatches since September, but it is unclear whether the flickering issues will be fixed with this update.

MacRumors reports that Apple on Wednesday issued an internal service memo to Apple Authorized Service Providers stating that it is investigating an issue affecting some Apple Watch models that causes the screen to flicker or pulse for a short period. The problem appears to be related to the always-on mode on the smartwatch, but does not specify which models are affected.

Based on user reports on Reddit and Apple’s community forum, users with the latest models — the Apple Watch Series 9 and the Apple Watch Ultra 2 — appear to be affected by the issue. One user states that the Watch Ultra 2 screen flickers when the wearer raises their wrist,  while another says that the issue occurs when a timer is running on the smartwatch and when the Modular Ultra watch face is in use.

Another user on the same thread on Reddit complains that some complications on the Apple Watch Ultra 2 flash pink when raising their wrist. The issue persists on a replacement watch provided by Apple, according to another user. On Apple’s community forum, two users have complained that the same issue is affecting their Apple Watch Series 9 when they raise the screen to wake the watch.

Meanwhile, updating to watchOS 10.1 beta 3, which was recent rolled out, appears to resolve the issue for a user on the Reddit thread. According to the MacRumors report, Apple has asked Apple Authorized Service Providers to refrain from repairing affected Apple Watch models and ask users to update their devices to future software releases, which suggests that this is a software-related issue. However, it is currently unclear whether updating to watchOS 10.1 — expected to roll out next week — will resolve the screen flickering issues on the affected Apple Watch models.

There are significant upgrades to Safari with faster browsing access between multiple windows. Another major introduction is Game Mode, with optimised gaming experience for the users. The update will be available for all compatible Mac computers starting September 26.

iOS 17 TipKit to Help Developers Show Users Hidden Features: All Details

iOS 17 was unveiled at the Worldwide Developers Conference 2023 by Apple alongside many other products and devices. Apple also introduced a new developer toolkit that will help developers familiarise people with their mobile apps by displaying how-to guides. Developers would usually create their own introductory or tutorial-type sessions or rely on those offered by a third party. They will now have the choice of a native solution on iOS platforms. Software updates iPadOS 17, macOS Sonoma, watchOS 10, and tvOS 17 were also introduced at the WWDC 2023.

According to Apple, the new TipKit tool will contain templates similar to what users are currently used to sharing in system apps. These will be customisable to reflect the developer’s own app’s look and feel. Furthermore, Apple claims that developers would be able to customise when and when their tips appear. That is, the advice does not have to be limited to onboarding. Tips might also be introduced as users start learning a new portion of the app, or they could be set up to be activated by specific rules.

With the ToolKit, developers would be able to avoid bothering users who are familiar with recommendations, such as those who had already found how specific features in the application functioned.

Developers might also specify when a tip should be displayed, such as after a user has visited a specific app section or utilised a specific function several times. As the user continues to learn about the app, the developers could provide them with a tip that might help them make use of advanced features or lead them to an undiscovered feature.

Apple will use TipKit to add native tips to its own apps, such as FaceTime, Photos, and iMessages, in iOS 17. This will assist in guiding users and eliminate misunderstandings by making seeing tips a more standard experience across the platform.

Apple Watch Ultra Gets Auto Night Mode With watchOS 10 Update: Report

Apple introduced watchOS 10, its latest operating system for Apple Watch models, at Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) on June 5. The watchOS update comes with several new upgrades like redesigned apps, a new Smart Stack to display relevant widgets, new watch faces, and more. With the new upgrades, Apple Watch Ultra, the company’s top-of-the-line smartwatch offering, also got an auto night mode. The watch already has the hardware-exclusive Wayfinder face that comes with the ability to turn on night mode on the watch. The Wayfinder watch face currently allows users to shift the colour scheme of the watch home screen to a black and red version.

According to a report by 9to5Mac, the latest Apple watchOS 10 has brought an auto night mode feature on the Apple Watch Ultra. The mode reportedly doesn’t require any manual switching and is said to use Apple Watch Ultra’s ambient light sensor to detect lower light conditions and enable Night Mode. The report further adds that it could be a default setting on an Apple Watch Ultra running watchOS 10. However, Apple is yet to share any details about it.

Apple Watch Ultra already has a hardware-exclusive Wayfinder face that let users turn on the night mode by shifting the colour mode to red and black. However, it is limited to the main screen only. The watch face comes with a clock bezel that shows location coordinates and elevation data. To turn on the night mode on Apple Watch Ultra in its current state, users will be required to long-press on the display and select the Wayfinder watch face from a list of available watch faces. Once done, they will have to spin the Digital Crown until the watch display turns red and the night mode gets activated.

Meanwhile, watchOS 10 has also brought new metrics and Workout Views. It also adds the capability to automatically pair an Apple Watch to Bluetooth-enabled cycling accessories like power meters, speed sensors, and cadence sensors. Additionally, the new operating system comes with new Maps functionalities that will allow hikers to see trails and trailhead information directly from their wrists.

The watchOS 10 update is currently available for developers in beta version and will be rolled out to the public later this fall. Do note that, the watchOS 10 will support the Apple Watch Series 4 or higher models paired with iPhone XS or later, running iOS 17.

watchOS 10 Could Feature Redesigned Home Screen Similar to iOS

Apple’s Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) is scheduled to begin on June 5. The Cupertino giant is expected to preview the next generation of watchOS alongside iOS 17, iPadOS 17, macOS 14 and tvOS 17 during the five-day-long affair. The watchOS 10 updated is expected to be in the spotlight this time and Apple could bring a major design upgrade to the wearable operating system. As per a new leak, watchOS 10 will come with a redesigned home screen layout inspired by iOS and a bunch of other features.

According to a Twitter user who goes by the name @analyst941, Apple will introduce a design overhaul with watchOS 10. It is said to come with a redesigned home screen with an icon layout similar to iOS. This would allow users to create folders and use, move, and act more easily. Currently, watchOS offers Grid and List view for the homescreen. The tipster says it is unsure if Apple is replacing the grid as default or if it’s a third option for users to choose from.

Recently, Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, in the latest edition of his newsletter Power On, claimed that watchOS will receive a major update this time. “The watchOS update will tell you most of what you need to know about the Apple Watch in 2023” he said. Hardware changes are expected to be minimal and the operating system upgrade could be the focus. The watchOS 10 update is said to come with new watch faces, workout modes, more native watch apps, etc

Apple’s WWDC 2023 will start on June 5 with the five-day-long event set to conclude on June 9.
