Giants get dominated by Cowboys 49-17: here’s how X reacted

The New York Giants came into Sunday hoping to stop the bleeding and surprise the world when they came in as heavy road underdogs against the Dallas Cowboys.

The Giants were down to their third-string quarterback, Tommy DeVito, who would get his first NFL start in a tough spot.

The game was never close between the two NFC East teams that are clearly headed in different directions.

Here is how X reacted to the blowout loss:

Tommy DeVito has grown ‘considerably’

The New York Giants will attempt to break a five-game losing streak against the Dallas Cowboys at AT&T Stadium this Sunday and they’ll try to do it with undrafted rookie Tommy DeVito at quarterback.

DeVito will make his first official NFL start this week but he’s not new to the gig. He’s played the majority of the snaps the past two weeks coming into both games in relief of the injured Tyrod Taylor and Daniel Jones.

This week, DeVito took all the first-team snaps in practice for the first time this year. He should be more ready for the role than in recent weeks.

Head coach Brian Daboll was asked what he’s been able to convey to DeVito, especially facing the relentless Dallas pass rush.

“The biggest thing that he’s done is he’s done everything he can do to put himself in a good position in terms of his preparation, reviewing the game plan, meeting extra with (quarterbacks coach) Shea (Tierney) and (offensive coordinator Mike) Kaf(ka), coming out here and practicing well and just controlling the things that he can do, and doing his job well,” Daboll said.

Many have to agree that the Jersey native DeVito has developed since he’s gotten here in May. He has looked more and more poised in the pocket and in the huddle with each passing game.

“He’s grown I’d say considerably,” said Daboll. “Again, when you come in as a rookie, regardless of where you’re drafted, when you come in as a rookie, there’s a ton of things you have to learn, and particularly at that spot. So, he’s kind of grown since OTAs. He’s made improvement from OTAs to training camp, I thought he improved in the preseason when he played and when you’re out here, you’re taking a couple of reps a period on the show team.

“So, you’re trying to hone in on your craft individually, but then you have to spend a lot of time studying. I think that Ty and Daniel have been good mentors for him. So, he’s had two full days here, we’ll have a third one, but he’s doing everything he can do.”

It will be a miracle if DeVito leads the Giants to a win this week but what a story it would be. Local boy does good. Sounds nice.

New York Giants’ Mike Kafka praises Tommy DeVito’s weekly improvements

The New York Giants will start undrafted rookie Tommy DeVito at quarterback when they hit the field at AT&T Stadium this Sunday in Dallas versus the heavily favored Cowboys.

DeVito has taken the majority of the snaps at quarterback over the last two games after Tyrod Taylor and Daniel Jones went down to injury but has yet to start an NFL game. Sunday will be his first.

On Thursday, offensive coordinator Mike Kafka appeared to be content with handing the reins over to DeVito, who has been with the team since May.

“Tommy’s continued to grow every single day that he’s been here from rookie camp. Just learning the offense and understanding how to be a pro and doing all the little things, all the things that work into that,” he said. “Whether it’s studying, preparation, being in the huddle with the guys, being a leader and a teammate and then understanding what the NFL game is about and how much detail that goes into that

“I think he’s really honed in on that. Each week, you look his notes and it’s just like getting better and better every single day, so that’s probably the biggest thing.”

The Giants have been reluctant to allow DeVito to throw the football downfield. After all, he only began to take first-team reps this week. We’ll see on Sunday how much Kafka trusts DeVito, but by the way he spoke, he could be there already.

“He approaches the position with confidence, and obviously when you’re playing quarterback, you want to have that confidence, you want to have that demeanor when you walk into the huddle,” Kafka said. “I think he has that. It’s something that looks like he’s had his whole life. He’s a confident kid, not just on the field but also off the field, too. He brings an energy with him that kind of permeates throughout the room.”

DeVito isn’t going to change the course of history here — if the Giants end up at the top of the NFL draft order, they will likely draft a quarterback — but if he can play well, at least the Giants know they have another NFL-level quarterback in the building.

3 reasons for optimism in Week 10

Wesley Hitt/Getty Images

When the Giants played the Cowboys in Week 1, the season got off to a rocky start. Midway through the first quarter, the game was 16-0.

The game got out of control in a hurry and the Giants ended up getting shut out, 40-0.

This time around, the coaching staff cannot ignore the situation of the game. The Giants will likely try to limit the possessions and rely heavily on the rushing attack with the rookie quarterback under center.

Head coach Brian Daboll & Co. should piece together a better game plan than they did in Week 1, adjusting properly to what they saw and what they expect this time around.

New York Giants’ Tommy DeVito will start in Week 10 vs. Dallas Cowboys

New York Giants head coach Brian Daboll has named Tommy DeVito the team’s starting quarterback for this Sunday afternoon’s game against the Dallas Cowboys at AT&T Stadium.

DeVito has played in relief over the past two weeks. Against the Jets in Week 8, he replaced Tyrod Taylor, who left the game in the first half with a rib injury.

This past week, DeVito entered the game in the second quarter after starter Daniel Jones left the game with a torn right ACL.

Taylor is on short-term IR and could return in three weeks. Jones’ season is over as he will have surgery to repair the ACL.

Daboll has not named DeVito as the team’s long-term starter as the Giants could turn to Barkley — or even recently signed Jacob Eason — at some point to assume the role. It’s just that DeVito right now has the most experience running this offense at the moment.

According to veteran Giants beat reporter Art Stapleton, DeVito will be the first rookie free agent quarterback to ever start a regular season game for the Giants in a non-strike year since the common draft was implemented in 1967.

Studs and duds from New York Giants’ Week 9 loss vs. Las Vegas Raiders

The New York Giants managed to find a new rock bottom on Sunday, falling to the Las Vegas Raiders, 30-6, in a game that also saw quarterback Daniel Jones suffer an apparent season-ending injury.

Despite mass turnover within the Raiders organization and an unproven rookie starting at quarterback, the Giants never stood a chance. They had the doors blown off them from the opening kickoff on.

With the loss, the Giants fall to 2-7 on the season and they must now begin to turn their attention to the 2024 NFL draft.

Here’s a look at some of the studs and duds (and studly duds) from the team’s latest loss.

Kyle Terada-USA TODAY Sports

There were precious few bright spots for the Giants on Sunday but running back Saquon Barkley was one.

Even with the Raiders able to stack the box and load up to stop Barkley, he rushed for 90 yards (5.6 ypc) and added another 23 yards on three receptions.

After several impressive weeks that briefly caused his critics to fall into silence, linebacker Kayvon Thibodeaux vanished in Week 9.

Not only did Thibs generate absolutely no pressure, he hardly factored into the game at all. He recorded just one tackle and was otherwise invisible against an offensive line that should have allowed him to feast.

Kyle Terada-USA TODAY Sports

Second-year wide receiver Wan’Dale Robinson continues to quietly put solid play on tape. He recorded four receptions on five targets for 35 yards and scored the Giants only touchdown on Sunday but that wasn’t all.

Robinson has impressive field awareness and does a lot right — a lot that goes overlooked. He’s a solid blocker despite his size and against the Raiders, recovered a Jalin Hyatt fumble.

After starting last season 6-1, head coach Brian Daboll has compiled a 6-14-1 record including the playoffs. He’s gone from Bono to Bozo in a hurry.

This week, Daboll elected to carry two kickers on the gameday roster (one on the 53-man and one elevated from the practice squad) instead of a third quarterback. That not only hurt the Giants after Jones’ injury, but it proved to be completely pointless.

The Giants attempted neither a field goal nor a PAT on Sunday.

Now there are rumblings that a rift is growing between the coaching staff and players. Yeehaw.

Kirby Lee-USA TODAY Sports

The Giants were a disaster at punt returner before Gunner Olszewski’s arrival. He hasn’t broken one for a touchdown but he’s more than capable and turned a team weakness into a strength. He fields the ball well and averaged 11.0 yards per return against the Raiders. It could have been more but he was tackled by his own teammate on one of his three returns.

Norm Hall/Getty Images

Right tackle Evan Neal returned from a left ankle sprain on Sunday only to exit the game with a right ankle sprain. He’s likely out for several more weeks.

If the injury isn’t frustrating enough, his play should be. He was clearly rusty but beyond that, he was completely dominated by the Raiders average pass rush. At one point, he caught a punch to the chest and simply folded over like a wet piece of paper.

Ian Maule/Getty Images

Rookie quarterback Tommy DeVito was put into an unwinnable situation for the second time in as many weeks and it wasn’t pretty. At one point in the first half, he had tossed more interceptions (2) than he had completions (1) but he kept battling.

It’s not DeVito’s fault he’s been thrown to the wolves. And it’s not his fault he’s had to be “the guy” in consecutive games due to poor personnel management.

Despite all of that, he still completed 15 of his 20 passes for 175 yards to go along with his first career touchdown pass.

It could have been a lot worse for a guy who’s taken a grand total of zero first-team reps in practice.

New York Giants’ Daniel Jones exits Raiders game with knee injury

New York Giants quarterback Daniel Jones returned from a neck injury on Sunday against the Las Vegas Raiders but that would be short-lived.

In the final seconds of the first quarter, Jones appeared to suffer a non-contact knee injury but briefly remained in the game. However, on the very next snap, he attempted a three-step drop and immediately crumbled to the ground.

Trainers quickly rushed onto the field and guided Jones into the blue medical tent before escorting him to the locker room.

“It buckled,” Jones told running back Saquon Barkley, per the FOX broadcast.

Undrafted rookie quarterback Tommy DeVito, who was signed from the practice squad this week, replaced Jones under center.

DeVito was unexpectedly called into action last week when veteran Tyrod Taylor suffered a severe rib cage injury. Taylor has since been placed on injured reserve (IR).

Running back Saquon Barkley and wide receiver Parris Campbell are the next in line at quarterback.

5 biggest storylines for Week 9

Sarah Stier/Getty Images

Quarterback Daniel Jones has been cleared for duty after missing the last three games due to a neck injury. It couldn’t come at a better time as his backup, Tyrod Taylor, has been ruled out this week with a ribcage injury.

Tommy DeVito has been elevated to the primary backup role with recently signed Matt Barley parked on the practice squad serving as the emergency QB.

Without Jones, the Giants have averaged just 11 points per game. With Jones in the lineup, they’ve averaged only 10.3 points per game. They are hoping things turn around beginning this week.

New York Giants set all-time NFL mark with -9 net yards passing

Sunday’s game between the New York Giants and New York Jets was one of the more ugly games you will ever see. Weather, of course, was a contributing factor given that it heavily rained for most of the game.

During the second quarter, the Giants, who were already shorthanded without Daniel Jones, lost Tyrod Taylor due to injury and turned to rookie Tommy DeVito.

The Giants clearly had no confidence in DeVito as they stuck primarily to the run for the remainder of the game.

Devito threw the ball just seven times for a total of -1 yards.

Because of that approach, the Giants set an all-time NFL record with -9 net yards passing in an overtime game.

Head Coach Brian Daboll was comfortable just playing for field position and relying on Big Blue’s defense to hold a three-point lead.

“I’d say this: this game, I kind of figured this is the way the game would be played out,” Daboll told reporters after the loss. “We were going to run the ball regardless. With the weather conditions and the way our defense was playing, we knew it would be kind of a fourth-quarter game. I felt comfortable with him running the offense. But again, the plan was we were going to keep it on the ground quite a bit based on the weather and based on how we thought the game was going to be played out, and it played out pretty much the way we thought it was going to be played out. Just came up short.

“Weather, control the game, thought our defense was going to play well, figured it would be a close game. Saquon (Barkley) had some good runs. We had some opportunities. Just trying to win the game a little bit of an old-school way today.”

Setting the new all-time NFL record for passing futility in an overtime game is a microcosm of how the Giants’ season has gone.

Poor coaching, late collapse doom Giants in 13-10 loss to Jets

The New York Giants hosted their MetLife co-tenants, the New York Jets on Sunday afternoon in a crucial Week 8 contest for both teams.

The Giants were again without starting quarterback Daniel Jones, who is still dealing with a neck injury. Backup Tyrod Taylor started in Jones’ absence for the third consecutive week but was forced to leave the game early due to injury.

The Giants also were without left tackle Andrew Thomas (hamstring) for the seventh straight week but saw the return of center John Michael Schmitz.

The weather was less than perfect for football with temperatures in the 50s, overcast skies and a steady rain.

For a game that was so poorly played by both sides, it turned out to be one of the most entertaining contests of the season thus far. But Giants fans probably aren’t feeling that way right now given how things ended.

Let’s recap:

Vincent Carchietta-USA TODAY Sports

Q1 Q2 Q3 Q4 OT Final
Giants 3 0 0 7 0 10
Jets 7 0 0 3 3 13

Vincent Carchietta-USA TODAY Sports

  • Kicker Graham Gano missed two field goals, first from 47 yards and then from 35 yards out in the final minute. He is dealing with a knee injury that will require surgery at some point and perhaps the Giants should have tried to gain the first down on the second miss rather than have Gano kick.
  • The rib injury to Tyrod Taylor killed any chance the Giants had of opening up their offense in the second half. They were clearly wary of attempting any type of passing attack behind Tommy DeVito.
  • All game long, the talk was of the Jets’ ineptitude on third down. At one point, they were 0-11 and finished 2-15. What the real story was that the Giants were equally as bad, going 2-19 on third down.
  • The Giants were able to stay in the game with their rushing attacks, which ended up gaining 203 yards on the afternoon — their highest total of the season.

Robert Deutsch-USA TODAY Sports

Jets kicker Greg Zuerlein kicked a 33-yard field goal with 6:12 in overtime to give the Jets a 13-10 victory.

The Giants had an opportunity to close the Jets out in the final minute of regulation but allowed the Jets to drive 58 yards in the final 24 seconds to tie the game at 10 with a 35-yard field goal.

Robert Deutsch-USA TODAY Sports

  • Saquon Barkley rushed 36 times for 128 yards, answering the call when the Giants needed him the most.
  • Kayvon Thibodeaux had three sacks for a total loss of 41 yards. He had nine combined tackles on the day and also forced a fumble. He has 8.5 sacks on the season with nine games remaining.
  • Bobby Okereke had another strong game with nine total tackles, three for a loss.

Dustin Satloff/Getty Images

Tight end Darren Waller, who was questionable coming into the game, was taken out in the second quarter after aggravating his sore hamstring. He had one catch for four yards on two targets. His exit left the Giants with one active tight end (Daniel Bellinger).

Quarterback Tyrod Taylor was knocked out of the game midway through the second quarter after getting landed on trying to scramble out of bounds. He left the field in pain and ended up being evaluated at a local hospital with a rib injury. Tommy DeVito, the Giants’ third quarterback, relieved Taylor.

Sarah Stier/Getty Images

Head coach Brian Daboll will hold a Zoom call with the team’s beat writers on Monday afternoon before a few players are also made available.

Big Blue will return to practice on Wednesday ahead of a Week 9 game against the Las Vegas Raiders on Sunday, November 5 at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas, Nevada. Kickoff is 4:25 p.m. ET.
