Samsung Hints at Introducing ‘New Premium Models’ of Galaxy Watch, Galaxy Ring Launch Tipped Too

Samsung recently said it is looking to expand its wearable ecosystem this year and dropped a big hint that it might introduce new premium models of smartwatches. The company published its Q1 2024 (Jan-March) earnings on Tuesday and also shared its plans for the next quarter and the rest of the year. For its Mobile eXperience (MX) Business, it could launch new models of the Galaxy Watch and even the Galaxy Ring this year. The South Korean tech giant is also planning to integrate Galaxy AI with new and existing flagship devices.

In a newsroom post, Samsung revealed its quarterly revenue, posting a significant growth quarter-on-quarter on the back of strong sales of flagship Galaxy S24 smartphones. The tech giant reported its operating profits for the quarter to be KRW 6.61 trillion (roughly Rs. 37 thousand crores). It also attributed the increased profits to the higher earnings posted by the MX Business.

Apart from its revenue numbers, the company also mentioned its plans for the next quarter as well as for the rest of the year. Notably, Samsung highlighted that it plans to expand its wearable ecosystem. One way it aims to do it is by introducing new form factors such as the Galaxy Ring. The device was recently showcased at the Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2024 but there is no word on its launch date. However, the mention highlights that the Galaxy Ring could be launched later this year. An earlier report claimed that it could enter mass production in the third quarter of the year.

The second way Samsung wants to expand the division is by introducing new premium models of smartwatches. This is interesting given the company currently has two smartwatches in the market — the Galaxy Watch 6 and the Galaxy Watch 6 Classic. However, this year, it might introduce other models alongside them. According to a report by SamMobile, Samsung could launch a new square or rectangular smartwatch.

This will not be a new move either as the company used to offer square smartwatches with its now-discontinued Galaxy Gear series. There is also rumours that the company could bring another smartwatch with the ‘Pro’ or ‘Ultra’ moniker and add more features to it, which could be used for the new rectangular dial.

Samsung Galaxy Watch 7 to Launch in Three Different Variants With 32GB Internal Storage: Report

Samsung’s Galaxy Watch 7 series is anticipated to launch alongside the Galaxy Z Flip 6 and Galaxy Z Fold 6 smartphones in the second half of this year. The flagship wearable lineup will succeed last year’s Galaxy Watch 6 series. Now, a media report claims that Samsung will release three versions of the Galaxy Watch 7. Each variant is expected to come in Wi-Fi and eSIM versions and the report reveals their model numbers. Samsung could pack 32GB storage on the Galaxy Watch 7 series.

As per a report from Sammobile, Samsung will launch three versions of the Galaxy Watch 7 this year. These models would reportedly be available in Wi-Fi-only and Wi-Fi and eSIM variants. The Galaxy Watch 6 is available only in two variants, a base model and the Classic.

The first variant of the Galaxy Watch 7 reportedly has two model numbers — SM-L300 and SM-L305. The middle variant’s model numbers are said to be — SM-L310 and SM-L315, while the top-end variant of the wearable comes with model numbers — SM-L700 and SM-L705. The model numbers ending with the number five could offer cellular connectivity and eSIM support.

Further, the report states that the Galaxy Watch 7 will come with 32GB of internal storage. This would be a significant upgrade over the predecessor. The Galaxy Watch 6 series packs 16GB of internal storage.

The new Galaxy Watch 7 lineup is likely to be announced at the next Samsung Unpacked event alongside the next-generation foldable smartphones. The event is expected to take place in July in Paris.

As per past leaks, the Galaxy Watch 7 will run on a 3nm chip with a new version of Wear OS and One UI Watch. It is said to be 50 percent more power-efficient compared to the Galaxy Watch 6.

The currently outgoing Galaxy Watch 6 is priced at Rs. 19,999 for the base Bluetooth variant in India, whereas the Galaxy Watch 6 Classic starts at Rs. 36,999.

Samsung Developing Non-Invasive Blood Sugar Monitor for Galaxy Watch, Galaxy Ring to Compete With Apple Watch

Samsung is reportedly working on developing new health features for its wearable devices as the South Korean tech giant competes with Apple and Google that also manufacture wearables with features aimed at health-conscious users. A company executive reportedly confirmed that the firm is developing non-invasive blood glucose monitoring, while improving blood pressure tracking. These are features that are also being developed by rival Apple, according to previous reports. Samsung recently teased a new wearable device — the Galaxy Ring — and a future model could be equipped with these features.

Hon Pak, Chief Medical Officer at Samsung told Bloomberg that the company is working on adding support for monitoring glucose levels and tracking blood pressure to its wearable devices. “If we can do continuous blood pressure and glucose, we’re in a whole different ballgame. […] I think that’s where everyone is trying to get to. We’re putting significant investment toward that.” the executive said in the interview.

Most blood glucose monitoring devices today require the skin to be punctured, in order to draw blood. However, companies like Apple and Samsung are working on technology that will allow users to track their blood sugar levels in a non-invasive manner. Samsung is also working on improving blood pressure tracking on its smartwatches that must be frequently calibrated with a medical device. 

If the South Korean firm succeeds in developing the technology, it could make its way to the Samsung Galaxy Watch and the recently teased Galaxy Ring, which will reportedly be available by the end of 2024. The company could even beat Apple, which has been working for over a adecade on the same blood glucose monitoring technology for future Apple Watch models.

However, the technology appears to be a few years away — we are unlikely to see these features on the successor to the Galaxy Watch 6 — and Pak is optimistic that non-invasive blood glucose monitoring will be available in the next five years, as per the report. It was reported last year that Apple had arrived at a major breakthrough in developing the advanced blood glucose monitoring technology that could make its way to a future Apple Watch model — the device was reportedly as large as an iPhone at the time.

Samsung Galaxy Watch 6 Series Offers Tap to Pay Feature in India for Contactless Payments

Samsung Galaxy Watch 6 series was launched at the Galaxy Unpacked event earlier this week. The series includes the Galaxy Watch 6 and Galaxy Watch 6 Classic models, and they are now up for pre-order in India. The flagship wearables now support Near Field Communication (NFC) based Tap to Pay feature in the country. This functionality allows users to make payments directly from their wrists without using a smartphone. The Galaxy Watch 6 series runs on Exynos W930. They are available in dial sizes ranging from 40mm to 47mm. The Galaxy Watch 6 Classic model comes with a functional rotating bezel.

Samsung’s new Galaxy Watch 6 allow users to make contactless payments using NFC in India. The Samsung Wallet app on Galaxy Watch 6 combines Samsung Pay with Samsung Pass. With this, users can carry their essentials including credit cards, digital IDs, boarding passes, and more in the Wallet app on the wearable. Once users register their supported credit card on Samsung Wallet through the Galaxy Watch 6 and Galaxy Watch 6 Classic, they can use NFC-based Tap to Pay feature to make payments at retail outlets, restaurants, and other places that accept NFC-enabled card payments. Users can bring their smartwatch close to a point-of-sale (PoS) terminal and money will be deducted automatically from the selected credit card.

The NFC-based Tap to Pay feature is available on eligible Galaxy Watch 6 devices, says Samsung. However, network coverage may affect this feature, the company says.

Samsung’s Galaxy Watch 6 is priced at Rs. 19,999 for the base Bluetooth variant, whereas the price of the Galaxy Watch 6 Classic starts at Rs. 36,999. They are currently up for pre-booking in India and will go on sale starting August 11.

The Galaxy Watch 6 series is powered by Samsung’s in-house Exynos W930 SoC paired with 2GB of RAM and 16GB of inbuilt storage. They come with AMOLED panels protected with Sapphire Crystal and offer an Always-On-Display (AOD) feature. The 40mm base model has a 1.3-inch screen, while the 44mm has a 1.5-inch display. The 43mm Galaxy Watch 6 Classic gets a 1.3-inch screen while the 47mm version has a 1.5-inch screen. They run Google’s Wear OS-based One UI 5 Watch and support WPC-based wireless fast charging. They have 5ATM and IP68 ratings as well. The Galaxy Watch 6 Classic includes a rotating physical bezel.

Samsung Galaxy Watches Get New Google Maps Update in Latest Wear OS Version: All Details

Samsung Galaxy Watch 4 and Galaxy Watch 5 users received a significant Google Maps update with the latest Watch OS update. The South Korean tech giant is also expected to launch the Galaxy Watch 6 series soon at the second Galaxy Unpacked event this year, confirmed to be held in the country’s capital city of Seoul in July. The upcoming lineup is likely to include two models — a base and a Classic variant, with the latter said to bring back the iconic mechanical rotating bezel which will reportedly allow users to navigate different apps and widgets on the device.

The 11.85.0502.W version of the WatchOS comes with several bug fixes and claims to provide a marked improvement in helping users “discover new places and navigate to them.” Galaxy Watch 4 and Watch 5 series users can access the update through Play Store on the smartwatch. They need to scroll down to the Manage Apps widget, and then select Update All or they can select the Google Maps option and only update that.

At launch, Samsung Galaxy Watch 5 was listed at $279 (roughly Rs. 22,100) for the 40mm Bluetooth variant and $329 (roughly Rs. 26,100) for the LTE variant. It is offered in Graphite, Pink Gold, and Silver colour options. On the other hand, the Pro model, available in Black Titanium and Gray Titanium colour options, was listed at $449 (roughly Rs. 35,600) for the Bluetooth variant and $499 (roughly Rs. 39,600) for the LTE variant. 

The devices run on Wear OS 3.5-based One UI Watch 4.5. The 44mm variant of the base model sports a 1.4-inch Super AMOLED display while the 40mm variant comes with a 1.2-inch Super AMOLED display with a resolution of 396×396 pixels. It is powered by an in-house Exynos W920 SoC paired with 1.5GB of RAM and 16GB of inbuilt storage. The 44mm model is backed by a 410mAh battery and the 40mm version packs a 284mAh battery.

Meanwhile, the Galaxy Watch 5 Pro model is equipped with a 1.4-inch Super AMOLED display with a resolution of 450×450 pixels. It is also powered by a Samsung Exynos W920 SoC. The smart wearable comes with a Titanium case with a D-buckle sport band. The watch is backed by a 590mAh battery.

Google Pixel Watch May Feature Samsung’s 4-Year-Old Exynos 9110 SoC: Report

Google Pixel Watch was unveiled alongside the Pixel 6a during the I/O 2022 event this week as the company’s first smartwatch. Google confirmed that the wearable will be available in the US starting this fall, but ahead of the official launch, a new report suggests that Google Pixel Watch will pack a four-year-old processor. The Samsung Exynos 9110 SoC, which debuted back in 2018 with the Galaxy Watch, is expected to power the wearable. The Google Pixel Watch will come in a circular domed design with swappable wrist bands. It will also feature Fitbit integration for enhanced fitness tracking support.

A report by 9to5google has suggested a key specification of the Google Pixel Watch. As per the report, the smartwatch will be powered by the Samsung Exynos 9110 SoC, a chip that debuted with the original Galaxy Watch in 2018. Google is most likely using the older chip because the Pixel Watch has been in development for a long time, notes the report. The Exynos 9110 SoC is a 10nm chip and it features two Cortex-A53 cores.

Recently, at I/O 2022, Google teased the Pixel Watch without confirming the launch date and price details. The device will run the latest Wear OS and features a circular display with minimal bezels and curved glass protection. It also has a stainless-steel build.

Google has packed customisable, swappable wrist bands on the Pixel Watch. Further, the wearable is confirmed to run on an improved Wear OS UI with more fluid navigation and smart notifications.

The Pixel Watch comes integrated with Fitbit and supports Google Assistant, Google Maps, and Google Wallet. It can be used as a remote for compatible smart home devices using the Home app for Wear OS.

It will also offer heart rate tracking and sleep monitoring. Users can also see their active zone minutes when working out and track their stats and progress against different fitness goals.

The Pixel Watch will also work with the Find My Device app to help users locate their misplaced Pixel phone, earbuds, or any other supported devices on a map available on their wrist.
