Samsung Galaxy Watch 6 Series Offers Tap to Pay Feature in India for Contactless Payments

Samsung Galaxy Watch 6 series was launched at the Galaxy Unpacked event earlier this week. The series includes the Galaxy Watch 6 and Galaxy Watch 6 Classic models, and they are now up for pre-order in India. The flagship wearables now support Near Field Communication (NFC) based Tap to Pay feature in the country. This functionality allows users to make payments directly from their wrists without using a smartphone. The Galaxy Watch 6 series runs on Exynos W930. They are available in dial sizes ranging from 40mm to 47mm. The Galaxy Watch 6 Classic model comes with a functional rotating bezel.

Samsung’s new Galaxy Watch 6 allow users to make contactless payments using NFC in India. The Samsung Wallet app on Galaxy Watch 6 combines Samsung Pay with Samsung Pass. With this, users can carry their essentials including credit cards, digital IDs, boarding passes, and more in the Wallet app on the wearable. Once users register their supported credit card on Samsung Wallet through the Galaxy Watch 6 and Galaxy Watch 6 Classic, they can use NFC-based Tap to Pay feature to make payments at retail outlets, restaurants, and other places that accept NFC-enabled card payments. Users can bring their smartwatch close to a point-of-sale (PoS) terminal and money will be deducted automatically from the selected credit card.

Samsung Wallet Updated With Support for Digital IDs, Flight Boarding Passes, FASTag and More for Indian Users

Samsung Wallet has been updated with support for several new features in India. Owners of the company’s Samsung Galaxy smartphones will now be able to store official documents securely using the Samsung Wallet app. They will also be able to recharge and manage their FASTag funds from within the Wallet app. The update will make it more convenient for Samsung customers in India, where most users with smartphones and Internet connectivity are accustomed to using digital services for day-to-day transactions.

According to a press release issued on Monday, the Samsung Wallet app can now securely store and display digital versions of PAN cards, Aadhaar cards, driver’s licences, vehicle registration details, as well as Co-WIN vaccination certificates. Gadgets 360 was able to confirm that the Samsung Wallet app on eligible Galaxy smartphones was able to save and display a vaccination certificate.

The company says that the updated Wallet app for users in India will combine the Samsung Pay and Samsung Pass functions and allow users to store their boarding passes for flights, as well as book and store train tickets. They will also be able to recharge and manage FASTag balance using the app.

None of the documents stored by the user will be collected by Samsung and the data is stored only on the device, the company claims. The app also uses the Samsung Knox platform to secure user data along with support for biometric authentication.

The Samsung Wallet app is available for compatible Galaxy smartphone users as an update to their existing Samsung Pay service. However, not all Samsung phones will offer support for the software. The easiest way to check if your phone supports the app is to searh for Samsung Pay on the Galaxy Store — only eligible phones will be able to download the app.

Samsung Wallet was launched in June last year, in seven countries: China, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, the UK, and the US. it was later expanded to Australia, Brazil, Canada, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Singapore, and Taiwan.

Samsung Wallet to Support Payments, Passes in 13 More Countries This Year

Samsung’s unified Wallet app is set to roll out in 13 more countries by the end of this year. The expansion will include key countries of Europe, Scandinavia, and Western Asia. Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar and UAE, also will see Samsung Wallet support activated in terms of payments and passes for the Middle East Region. South Africa, and Vietnam will also be part of the expansive efforts of the South-Korean conglomerate’s unified payments and passes app, Samsung Wallet.

Samsung made the expansion announcement via its newsroom. Samsung Wallet’s initial launch in June earlier this year was limited to 7 countries that included China, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, the UK, and the US. The wallet services were also initially launched in South Korea under Samsung Pay.

The Samsung Wallet service allows users to organize and access important documents and identifications including bank cards and digital keys to travel passes, driver’s licenses, and student IDs, under one single application. The platform utilises an isolated environment for storing data of sensitive nature while also being protected by Samsung’s security platform, Samsung Knox, which deploys fingerprint recognition and encryption for data protection.

“Samsung Wallet takes everyday convenience to the next level and we have worked closely with our trusted partners and developers to enrich our Wallet experience,” said Jeanie Han, EVP and Head of Digital Life Team at Mobile eXperience Business, Samsung, in the press release announcing the expansion of Samsung Wallets into new countries.

However, the South Korean conglomerate did not confirm the exact dates when Samsung Wallet app will be made available in the new supported countries. The roll-out is expected to be completed by the end of 2022, according to the press release.
