Samsung Hints at Introducing ‘New Premium Models’ of Galaxy Watch, Galaxy Ring Launch Tipped Too

Samsung recently said it is looking to expand its wearable ecosystem this year and dropped a big hint that it might introduce new premium models of smartwatches. The company published its Q1 2024 (Jan-March) earnings on Tuesday and also shared its plans for the next quarter and the rest of the year. For its Mobile eXperience (MX) Business, it could launch new models of the Galaxy Watch and even the Galaxy Ring this year. The South Korean tech giant is also planning to integrate Galaxy AI with new and existing flagship devices.

In a newsroom post, Samsung revealed its quarterly revenue, posting a significant growth quarter-on-quarter on the back of strong sales of flagship Galaxy S24 smartphones. The tech giant reported its operating profits for the quarter to be KRW 6.61 trillion (roughly Rs. 37 thousand crores). It also attributed the increased profits to the higher earnings posted by the MX Business.

Apart from its revenue numbers, the company also mentioned its plans for the next quarter as well as for the rest of the year. Notably, Samsung highlighted that it plans to expand its wearable ecosystem. One way it aims to do it is by introducing new form factors such as the Galaxy Ring. The device was recently showcased at the Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2024 but there is no word on its launch date. However, the mention highlights that the Galaxy Ring could be launched later this year. An earlier report claimed that it could enter mass production in the third quarter of the year.

The second way Samsung wants to expand the division is by introducing new premium models of smartwatches. This is interesting given the company currently has two smartwatches in the market — the Galaxy Watch 6 and the Galaxy Watch 6 Classic. However, this year, it might introduce other models alongside them. According to a report by SamMobile, Samsung could launch a new square or rectangular smartwatch.

This will not be a new move either as the company used to offer square smartwatches with its now-discontinued Galaxy Gear series. There is also rumours that the company could bring another smartwatch with the ‘Pro’ or ‘Ultra’ moniker and add more features to it, which could be used for the new rectangular dial.

Samsung Galaxy Ring Model Numbers Reveal Compact Wearable Will Arrive in Eight Sizes: Report

Samsung Galaxy Ring is expected to arrive in global markets in the coming months, and details of the next-generation wearable have been leaking ever since the company first teased it in January. A new report reveals the model numbers of the wearable device, that suggest it will be available in eight sizes. Samsung is yet to reveal detailed specifications of the Galaxy Ring, which is expected to offer health and sleep monitoring features, and run for up to nine days on a single charge.

A Galaxy Club report (in Dutch) states that there are only eight confirmed variants of the Galaxy Ring. These are SM-Q500, SM-Q501, SM-Q502, SM-Q505, SM-Q506, SM-Q507, SM-Q508, and SM-Q509. Two model numbers appear to be missing, and it is currently unclear whether these represent additional sizes, or whether Samsung will introduce a ninth variant, like it previously announced.

The publication speculates that these model numbers will match US ring sizes 5 and higher, starting with the SMQ500. The following model numbers could represent larger ring sizes, up to size 13, which could correspond with the model number SM-Q509, as per the report.

Earlier this year, a tech analyst claimed that they had received a hands-on experience with a Galaxy Ring prototype, which would be available in multiple sizes, up to US size 13 (or 22.2mm). The upcoming Samsung Galaxy Ring is also expected to be available in three finishes. In a recent report (in Korean) Samsung revealed that the ring will offer nine days of battery life.

Meanwhile, a recent report suggests that Samsung is producing over 400,000 units of the Samsung Galaxy Ring, and mass production of the wearable is expected to begin next month. First teased at the company’s first Galaxy Unpacked event of the year in January, Samsung then showed off the ring again at the Mobile World Congress (MWC 2024), and the device is expected to be unveiled at Samsung’s next Galaxy Unpacked event in July, alongside the purported Galaxy Z Flip 6 and Galaxy Z Fold 6.

Samsung Files Trademarks for AR/VR Capable ‘Galaxy Glasses’, Smart Ring: Report

Samsung is reportedly gearing up to make additions to its wearable gadget offerings. The South Korean conglomerate has reportedly filed for trademarks in the US, which could be in line with the company’s efforts to expand its AR/VR and Mixed Reality portfolios. Although tech companies generally register trademarks that are intentionally broad-based in order to allow enough time and room for the research project to grow, it does serve as an indication that the company intends to launch the product or technology in the market it has filed for the trademark in — which in the case of Samsung’s latest trademark filing is reportedly the US.

According to a report by 9to5google, which cites a trademarks and patents database website, uspto.report, Samsung has registered a trademark under the brand name ‘GALAXY GLASSES™’ which is believed to be intended for Samsung’s in-development smart glasses. The report states that the trademark registration covers VR/AR, headphones, smartphones, and smart glasses categories, indicating that the functionality of the purported smart glass from Samsung could encompass all these categories.

However, the report also adds that it is unclear if and when Samsung will launch the purported Galaxy Glasses.

Meanwhile, according to the report, the South Korean conglomerate has filed for another trademark in the US for the brand name “Samsung Galaxy Ring”. This, according to the description provided on the third-party US patent reporting website, is intended for the tracking, measuring, monitoring, and uploading of health, fitness, and sleep-related data. 9to5Google’s report suggests that looking at the functionality description, Samsung may be looking at replacing smartwatches as the primary fitness tracker.

Since the filing is reportedly on public record, Samsung may choose to unveil the Galaxy Glasses, and Galaxy Ring wearables formally in the near future.

At a Galaxy Unpacked 2023 event in Barcelona on February 1 this year, Samsung had announced that it will be collaborating with Google and Qualcomm to develop a new extended reality (XR) headset.

A related report by The Washington Post indicated that the scope of collaboration could expand to include Meta and Microsoft, which would make this an ultimate coming together of big tech on the development of a product.

Samsung’s Galaxy S23 series of smartphones was launched earlier this week and the South Korean firm’s high-end handsets have seen a few upgrades across all three models.
