The number of people globally who initially access news through a website or app has dropped by 10 points since 2018, and younger groups prefer to access news through social media, search or mobile aggregators, according to a report released on Tuesday.
Audiences pay more attention to celebrities, influencers, and social media personalities than journalists on platforms such as TikTok, Instagram, and Snapchat, the Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism said in its annual Digital News Report. TikTok is the fastest growing social network in the report, used by 20 percent of 18- to 24-year-olds for news, up five percentage points from last year. Fewer than half the survey respondents expressed much interest in news at all, down sharply from 6 out of 10 in 2017.
“There are no reasonable grounds for expecting that those born in the 2000s will suddenly come to prefer old-fashioned websites, let alone broadcast and print, simply because they grow older,” Reuters Institute Director Rasmus Nielsen said in the report, which is based on an online survey of roughly 94,000 adults, conducted in 46 markets including the U.S.
Less than a third of the survey’s respondents said that having stories selected for them based on their previous consumption is a good way to get news, a 6-point decline from 2016, when the survey last asked the question. Yet people still slightly prefer to have their news chosen by algorithms than by editors or journalists.
Trust in the news has fallen by 2 percentage points in the last year, reversing gains made in many countries at the peak of the coronavirus pandemic. On average, 40 percent of people say they trust most news most of the time. The United States has seen a 6-point increase in trust in news, to 32 percent, but remains among the lowest in the survey.
Across markets, 56 percent of people say they worry about identifying the difference between real and fake news on the internet – up 2 percentage points from last year.
The survey found that 48 percent of people say they are very or extremely interested in news, down from 63 percent in 2017.

Two self-identified “radical feminist” groups are siding with Republicans in backing a bill banning transgender women from playing in women’s sports leagues, according to a report.
The Women’s Liberation Front and Women’s Declaration International USA threw their support this week behind the GOP-sponsored legislation known as the “Protection of Women and Girls in Sports Act,” Fox News reported.
The bill — introduced by Rep. Greg Steube (R-Fla) earlier this year — aims to prevent transgender women and girls who were assigned male at birth from participating in women’s and girl’s sports.
It would amend Title IX, a landmark education bill that bans discrimination on the basis of sex, to define sex as “based solely on a person’s reproductive biology and genetics at birth.”
The self-described feminist groups said they believe in women’s rights as a category based on the sex of a person, not gender or gender identity.
The Women’s Declaration International USA, a nonpartisan organization, has established its own “Declaration on Women’s Sex-Based Rights” in line with such thinking.
“We are a radical feminist organization, and Article Seven of the ‘Declaration on Women’s Sex-based Rights,’ which is grounded in a radical feminist critique of gender identity, demands that sports be kept single sex,” the group’s president Kara Dansky told Fox. “And we think that Representative Steube’s bill is in alignment with Article Seven of the Declaration.”

Dansky said she is a registered Democrat but completely disagrees with her party’s stance on the issue.
Board chair of the Women’s Liberation Front Lierre Keith also said she supports the legislation because it ensures fairness in women’s and girl’s sports leagues.
“Women and girls deserve to play in athletic competitions that are fair and safe,” Keith told Fox News in a statement. “Single-sex sports are critical to ensuring equal opportunity, scholarships, and careers, and new ‘gender identity’ policies threaten to set women back decades in progress.”
She noted that biological males have innate physical and athletic advantages to biological, cisgender females.
“Even the fastest female Olympians are still out-run by high school boys, and biological differences between males & females are not even remotely changed by hormones or surgery,” Keith said.
In an interview with the outlet, Steube, the bill’s author, was glad for the support calling it an “interesting bipartisan conglomerate.”

The Protection of Women and Girls in Sports Act will go to the House floor for a vote Thursday, where Steube believes it will pass with a number of Democrats signing on. It’s future, however, is less certain in the Senate, he said.
“I would imagine, depending on how many Democrats end up voting, that will probably give it a lot of support,” the Florida Republican said.
Still, many Democrats have slammed the bill.

A 16-year-old transgender girl from New Jersey said the bill would cut her off from the support system she found playing on her high school’s girl’s field hockey team.
“Sports are one of the most American experiences in any childhood, a federal sports ban would alienate me from my community, and prevent me from continuing to become a better version of myself,” Rebekah Bruesehoff said during a press conference outside the Capitol last month, according to The Hill.
“I’ve been raised and taught by my parents, coaches and teachers to be the kind of person who works actively to include people, make sure no one eats alone in the lunchroom and who stands up to bullies,” she said. “That’s what I’m doing here.”
President Biden has vowed to veto the bill if it makes it to his desk.
An SUV crashed into a northern California home over the weekend and became lodged in the second-floor roof, authorities said.

The Twitter CEO and SpaceX founder told Fox News host Tucker Carlson that there’s no evidence of “conscious life” anywhere in the universe besides planet Earth — a phenomenon he says humans take for granted.
“A lot of people ask me, you know, where are the aliens? And I think if anyone would know about aliens on Earth it would probably be me,” Musk said in an interview.
“Yeah, I’m, you know, very familiar with space stuff. And I’ve seen no evidence of aliens … I would immediately tweet it out. That’d be probably the top tweet of all time. ‘We found one, guys!’ It’s the jackpot with some 8 billion likes.”

A spokesperson with the Texas art museum confirmed to Fox News Digital that Sunday, May 21, will be the last day visitors can see the historic marble statue.
The centuries-old sculpture, which is reportedly modeled after Germanicus, a Roman military commander and politician who died around 9 BC in Germania – European tribal lands that were situated around the Rhine River, Vistula River, Danube River, North Sea, Baltic Sea and more – will be returned to the Pompejanum Museum in Aschaffenburg, Germany.
Art historians believe the bust of Germanicus may have been crafted between 1 BC and 1 AD, according to the San Antonio Museum of Art.
Centuries after its estimated construction, the museum reports that art history experts were able to trace the statue back to King Ludwig I of Bavaria (Aug. 1786 to Feb. 1868), who had the bust installed in the courtyard of the Pompejanum – a Roman-style villa he commissioned and had built in the 1840s as a replica of Pompeii.
Today, the Pompejanum is a tourist attraction that welcomes visitors who pay admission fees set by the Bavarian Administration of State-Owned Palaces, Gardens and Lakes.

The San Antonio Museum of Art obtained the bust from Laura Young, a Texas-based art collector who reportedly purchased the bust from a Goodwill thrift store in Austin in 2018.
In a press release, the art museum noted that it’s currently not known how the bust ended up in Texas, but authenticators with the international auction house Sotheby’s and the Bavarian Administration of State-Owned Palaces, Gardens and Lakes, have confirmed the statue’s ties to Ludwig I.
The San Antonio Museum of Art told Fox News Digital that the marble bust of Germanicus had been purchased by Ludwig I through a “legitimate art market in Italy” and that very reason is why the statue will be returned to the Pompejanum in Aschaffenburg, Germany, instead of Rome.

“The German State was the last legal owner of the portrait, which was in the collection of the Bavarian King Ludwig I by 1833,” the museum wrote in an emailed statement.
Germany reportedly lost possession of the marble bust after World War II and art history experts suspect the statue may have been stolen by a soldier after Allied forces bombed Aschaffenburg in January 1944, which “seriously damaged the Pompejanum,” according to the San Antonio Museum of Art.
The museum reports that the bust could have been taken by someone in the U.S. Army between the 1940s and 1990s since the military branch had stations set up in Aschaffenburg until the end of the Cold War.

A weather system that brought severe storms over the weekend is bringing blizzard conditions to parts of the Upper Midwest to start the workweek.
A cold front swept through the country’s eastern half and produced a plethora of weather events Sunday, including rain and severe storms.
Many communities that saw record heat to end the workweek will be the recipients of precipitation as the front continues to move east.
Winter weather alerts, including Blizzard Warnings, have been posted for the Upper Midwest, as some areas could see more than a foot of snow through Monday evening.
Who is seeing snow?
Falling temperatures throughout the day will help many communities in the Upper Midwest fall to near freezing and see either freezing rain or snow.
Cities like Chicago and points northward will all see a good chance that frozen precipitation during the start of the workweek.
Forecast models show Minneapolis could get around 3 inches of snow while communities in northern Wisconsin and the Upper Peninsula of Michigan could see the brunt of the winter weather with more than a foot possible.

A heartless Florida woman admitted to scamming an 87-year-old Holocaust survivor she met on a dating site out of a jaw-dropping $2.8 million, federal prosecutors announced.
Peaches Stergo’s years-long fraud cost the elderly victim his life savings while she lived a life of luxurythat included a house in a gated community, a Corvette, lavish vacations and designer items, including Rolex watches, the US Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York said in a Friday news release.
In total, the victim signed off on 62 checks totaling almost $3 million that went right into Stergo’s coffers and he ultimately lost his apartment from the romance scam.
Starting in early 2017 — after the 36-year-old woman met the man on a dating site — she asked the victim to borrow money to pay her lawyer who she said refused to fork over funds from an injury settlement, according to the feds.
She claimed the funds were put into a TD Bank account, but evidence indicates she never received a cent from a supposed injury settlement.
Over the next four-and-a-half years, Stergo’s web of lies steadily continued, draining the Holocaust survivor of his final pennies.
She demanded the victim deposit money into her bank accounts because she claimed if not, they would be frozen and he would never get any of the money back that he loaned her, the US Attorney’s Office said.

He continued loading money into two accounts belonging to Stergo, who at one point even created a fake email account and fake invoices that were supposed to look like it came from a TD Bank employee, the feds said.
Stergo pleaded guilty to one count of wire fraud and faces up to 20 years in prison. She was also ordered to pay $2.8 million in restitution and forfeit the same amount, including the more than 100 luxury items she bought including designer clothes, purses and lots of jewelry.
“Peaches Stergo stole the life savings from an 87-year-old Holocaust survivor who was just looking for companionship. This conduct is sick – and sad,” US Attorney Damian Williams said in a statement. “… Thanks to the hard work of the FBI and this Office, Stergo is being held accountable for her fraud.”
Stergo also bought a boat and other cars on top of the house and Corvette she purchased. Some of the fancy items she scooped included from companies like Tiffany, Ralph Lauren, Neiman Marcus, Louis Vuitton and Hermes.
Ukrainian soldiers headed off to battle are trying to ensure the survival of their bloodlines by freezing their sperm before they leave.
The practice — which several local clinics have begun offering for free — has become something of a patriotic duty, according to the New York Times.
Besides being a way to offer a bit of comfort to their partners left behind, at least some of the male soldiers are taking the measure to combat what they see as the Russians trying to exterminate them and their countrymen.
“The modern world allows us to give birth and raise the children of our fallen loved ones — the bravest and most courageous humans in this world,” said Nataliya Kyrkach-Antonenko, who told The Times that her husband died on the battlefield while she was three months pregnant.

Kyrkach-Antonenko has become a poster child for the practice.
Her late husband, Vitaly, froze his sperm before going to war, she said.
And though he was killed, Kyrkach-Antonenko said he will be the father of all her future children.
Now, she uses her Facebook page to encourage other soldiers to do the same for their wives.

A massive mob of rowdy teenagers clashed with cops near downtown Chicago’s Millenium Park on Saturday night, leaving two teens wounded and at least one bystander beaten.
The unruly mob erupted in violence — trashing property, smashing windshields and torching cars while attacking at least one motorist — forcing cops to escort tourists to safety, WFLD-TV News reported Sunday.
Chicago police said two teens — 16 and 17 years old — were wounded by a gunman in the crowd, the outlet reported.
The violence came a day after a 14-year-old boy was shot during another outburst of teen violence at 31st Avenue Beach.
Police reported one arrest in that incident.
On Saturday, hundreds — and possibly thousands — of teenagers massed in the Chicago Loop around 9 p.m. after social media posts called for a meetup near Millennium Park, WMAQ-TV in Chicago reported.

“It’s heartbreaking,” one witness told the station. “Kids fighting, chasing each other. Some of them got guns. It’s really heartbreaking when one of them actually gets hurt, and that’s unfortunate.”

The two teens shot in the melee were also taken to the hospital, and were in fair condition.
