Aussie specker finds massive gemstone on evening walk

A Queensland amateur prospector has claimed his biggest find yet after excavating a precious gemstone during his evening walk.

Matt Betteridge found “an absolutely massive” 834-carat Australian sapphire near his home on fossicking land near Rubyvale in Queensland’ Gemfields while on a “bit of evening specking (looking for sapphires with a torch)”.

Mr Betteridge told the Today show on Monday morning that his family “were stoked” with his find.

“When I got back to camp we put it on the scales and my wife and I yelled 800 carat! We couldn‘t even comprehend the size of it,” he said.

Mr Betteridge shared the moment in a TikTok video, scraping back dirt and trying to pull the gemstone out only to realise it was too big and required more excavation.

“Holy dooley … No way!” he exclaimed in the video.

“Holy dooley … what the hell.”

Matt Betteridge said he found the 834-carat Australian sapphire near his home on fossicking land.

He said the result of the excavation was “an absolutely massive” 834-carat Australian sapphire.

“Look at the size of the crystal there,” he said in the clip in an ecstatic voice.

Mr Betteridge claimed the sapphire was “very roughly” worth about $12,500, telling followers on TikTok he was ”beyond stoked”.

“So chuffed I can’t even explain,” he wrote.

“The rain unearthed it that little bit … I thought it was going to be an average-sized stone until I couldn’t pull it out,” he said.

When asked if the sapphire would be put on jewellery, he said “this one will stay as a specimen”.

“It does have some facet-grade material inside here and you would have to destroy the specimen to find out how much it’s worth and that’s not for me,” he said.

“I think I will keep it as it is,” he said.

With so much rain recently, gem hunters like Mr Betteridge are out in force, believing they have a better chance of spotting the lucrative gemstones after heavy rain has washed away topsoil.

“All the speckers are out covering ground, even in between the showers,” Mr Betteridge said.

“We are all for getting people out here to have a go. Just grab your permit in town here and have a go.”

The region is believed to be one of the largest sapphire-bearing areas in the world.

Men’s Division USA Mullet championship final three

It’s time for the mane event!

America bands together once again, as a new winner will be crowned as the mullet champion Saturday morning on the Today Show.

Earlier this month, votes were cast to select the top three out of 25 participants in the Men’s Open Division for the USA Mullet Champ competition.

With over 20,000 votes cast, three of the hardest hairdos will find out if their luscious locks will be accompanied by a crown and some serious bragging rights.

Dalton Cleghorn, who describes his wicked mullet as all business in the front and “straight waterfall, ramen noodle in the back,” is hoping to take home first place.

Hailing from Toledo, Ohio, Cleghorn shows off in his submission video as to why he warrants to be the mullet champ, as he self-proclaims himself the 2022 winner before shotgunning a beer one-handed.

Brandon Hernandez, “a real American,” representing the Lone Star state, showed off some of his showmanship before showing off his supreme mullet.

Coming out of Buda, Texas, like a persona out of the WWE, Hernandez is all about his patriotism and slick hair.

Draping the Texas state flag over his back while shaking out his prime do, Hernandez radiates the confidence Americans expect from their mullet champion.

Scott Salvadore says, “You gotta have rocks if you wanna grow the locks,” and he’s ready to show off his locks to America, rocks in hand.

From Stillwater, New York, Salvadore describes his mullets as the lord’s drapes.

Like a man of divine faith, he makes it clear that he was chosen to rock his monumental mullet.

The mullet champ will earn the “Mullet Mega Money Pot,” worth $2,500, and, of course, the bragging rights of the slickest men’s mullet in the United States.

Second and third place will receive a Mullet Champs gift set.

This past summer, USA Mullet Championship crowned eight-year-old Emmit Baily from Wisconsin took home first place in the kid’s division championship.

New Zealand job pays more than $50,000 — and nobody wants it

It’s not the gig for people who love to work from home, but if you’re a fan of getting out in nature – and visiting some of the most picturesque parts of the world – this might be for you.

The Department of Conservation in New Zealand is looking for a ‘biodiversity supervisor’ in Haast, which sits on the western edge of Mount Aspiring National Park on the South Island.

According to local media, despite the job offering the successful applicant days of patrolling the most spectacular parts of New Zealand, a bit of jet boating and even a few trips in a helicopter – only 3 people have applied.

“It is working in one of the most amazing natural environments that the country has got to offer,” Wayne Costello, Operations Manager for DOC in South Westland, told Stuff.

“It’s just spectacular. But it is not for everyone. You’d have to be self-reliant and be able to work in the outdoors. If you’re interested in opera and theatre, it’s probably not for you.”

Due to the lack of applicants, Mr. Costello has cast a wider net – including luring Aussies to apply.

The position’s salary is between $41,000-$53,000.
Corbis via Getty Images

“The locals are wonderfully friendly,” Mr. Costello said.

“There are some of New Zealand’s original families, who pioneered farming and fishing down in that part of the world. They’re really lovely.”

But the region isn’t for everyone – especially those who love a bit of city life, with only about 200 residents living in town and the closest supermarket sitting about a two-hour drive away.

However, where it lacks in shops and services the region booms in natural wonders, with lush rainforests, glaciers and towering mountains dotted throughout the park.

Haast has a population of just 200 residents.
Corbis via Getty Images

Mr. Costello said the main purpose of the role is “saving the kiwi and bringing the Haast tokoeka back from the brink.”

“Then also wildlife response with tawaki, normally when there’s been an injury or something like that. And we are doing some outstanding work with lizards, cascade geckos, and skinks, which are just stunning.”

Getting around in a helicopter and even a jet boat, the daily commute is about as thrilling as they come. And the wage? Well, not a bad gig for between $41,000 and $53,000.

“We’re looking for good team players, people who like working with other people and be part of a bigger team,” he explained.

“But you also have to be reasonably independent and have lots of initiative.”

Instagram influencer Núbia Cristina Braga gunned down at home

Popular Brazilian beauty influencer Núbia Cristina Braga has been shot to death outside her house by motorcycle gunmen, who later fled the scene.

The grisly case came to light after the bombshell, who boasted nearly 60,000 Instagram followers, was discovered dead at her home in the Santa Maria neighborhood of Aracaju on the night of October 14, Jam Press reported.

According to authorities, Braga had just returned home from a hair salon — an appointment she detailed in her final Instagram story.

Shortly after she arrived, two men rode up on motorcycles and entered Braga’s property through the open front door, per the reports. Upon spotting the aspiring social media star, they opened fire, shooting her several times before fleeing the scene of the crime.

Authorities later arrived at the house at 9 p.m. to find Braga lying dead in a pool of her own blood.

The identities and motive of the masked assassins is unknown, however, police have since launched an investigation into the murder. They are also imploring the public to come forward with any information that will lead to their arrest.

The shooting marked a tragic end for Braga, who dreamed of one day becoming a world-renowned Instagram star. The Brazilian regularly posted content related to travel, beauty and fashion and even owned her own clothing store.

Despite her social media ambitions, the Brazilian beauty was also a selfless soul who volunteered in the community and helped organize parties for Children’s Day and Christmas. “Núbia did volunteer work and helped everyone,” described her aunt Cláudia Menezes. “She left a legacy behind.”

The identities and motive of Braga’s assassins is yet unclear.

Braga is remembered by friends and admirers as honest, cheerful and independent, Jam Press reported.

Fans have since flocked to social media to mourn the Instagramer’s passing with one lamenting: “My JESUS, the woman only posted a Story 3 hours ago and was brutally murdered, only GOD can comfort her family and friends.”

“Rest in peace princess, you were an amazing girl,” wrote another, while one devastated supporter added, “There is no other of you, you are unique.”

“May your passage be peaceful, God is with you,” said another.

This isn’t the first time an influencer has been murdered under suspicious circumstances.

Australian woman clears the air over ‘racist’ letter

A student who took to social media to share her outrage about a “racist” letter she received was quickly shut down after the truth was revealed.

Former University of Queensland student Sierra Chen took to Facebook to express her disgust after a letter sent to her home was addressed to a person named “Ms. Ching Chong”.

The woman, who is of Chinese origin, believed it may have been a malicious act of racism, as the phrase can be used as an ethnic slur to mock people of Chinese and East Asian heritage.

“Last week I received mail from UQ sports with a slur on the envelope, Ching Chong,” she wrote.

“The content of the letter was quite normal, but Ching Chong is a racial discrimination word against Chinese.

Sierra Chen reached out to her house manager looking for “Ms. Ching Chong.”
Facebook / Sierra Chen

“I emailed them to find out the truth, they told me where was a girl called Ching Chong that had left this address. They couldn’t give me any more details due to privacy.

“However, I double checked with my house manager, and there wasn’t anyone called ‘Ching Chong’ that has lived in this house.

“If possible, I hope I can contact with this girl, and I hope it was just a coincidence.

Sierra Chen didn’t receive any answers while searching for anyone named “Ms. Ching Chong.”
Facebook / Sierra Chen

“I wonder if anyone else has received such suspicious letters, please contact me too.”

Her post was met with many angry reactions from others who thought it may have been a cruel joke.

“That’s so racist” one commented.

“You should report it.”

After sharing the alleged racist letter online, Sierra Chen found out the recipient’s name was correct from a former tenant.
Facebook / Sierra Chen

“Sorry you had to feel that way, it must have been really insulting” another said.

“As an Australian with a French last name… [there is] no end of people speaking bad French slurs.”

While many were incensed about the apparent racist fiasco, the truth was soon revealed.

Another former student came forward to assure that she had lived at that address previously, was involved with UQ sport, and that was in fact her real name.

“Chill guys, it’s me. My birth name is Ching Chong,” she explained.

“My parents named me Ching because it rhymes with my family name Chong, and my beautiful Chinese name.

“I lived at that address in 2017 and was a Blues recipient. UQ sports is not racist, I just have a cool name.”

Many were relieved that the entire fiasco was actually not malevolent in nature.

“Thank you Sierra Chen for calling this out,” Ching said.

“I would be super confused too if I received a letter at my address with such an interesting name, if this wasn’t my actual name.

“Thank you for taking action to check with the house manager and UQ sports, and for trying to find me. I appreciate you.”

Sierra Chen was happy to have the letter recipient explain the situation.
Facebook / Sierra Chen

People in the comment section came together to share their relief, and also to open up about other awkward name mishaps that had occurred.

“My friend’s name is Ichi Wang, it was the first thing he ever told me about himself,” one said.

“He loves his interesting name.”

“What a plot twist. I’ve never laughed so hard!” commented another.

America’s Halloween candy preferences identified state-by-state: report

There’s no denying candy is a central part of Halloween.

But some candy brands are more liked than others. Instacart – a digital grocery delivery and pick-up service – says it has determined which candies are most loved by Americans, based on sale data from October 2021.

The e-commerce retail network, which is partnered with supermarkets, department stores and wholesale clubs throughout the country, reports that 658 tons of candy were sold last October, according to internal calculations.

Americans reportedly bought 116 tons of Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups, and it’s the only brand to pass the 100-ton mark, Instacart found.

M&M’s were the next top-purchased brand with 94 tons of milk chocolate M&M’s sold and 92 tons of Peanut M&M’s sold.

Snickers and Hershey’s Milk Chocolate were tied with 65 tons followed by Twizzlers with 56 tons, Kit Kat with 49 tons, Twix with 48 tons, Starburst with 37 tons and Milky Way with 36 tons.

Chocolate seems to be America’s go-to when it comes to candy.
NurPhoto via Getty Images

Three out of the 10 “top candies” Instacart sold in October 2021 stood out in the U.S. and each one is made with chocolate.

Two states favored milk chocolate M&M’s, 15 states favored Peanut M&M’s and 33 states favored Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups.

M&M’s: Hawaii and New Hampshire

Peanut M&M’S: Alaska, Arizona, California, Colorado, Idaho, Montana, New Mexico, Nebraska, Nevada, North Dakota, Oregon, South Dakota, Texas, Utah and Washington

Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups: Alabama, Arkansas, Connecticut, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Mississippi, Missouri, New York, New Jersey, North Carolina, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Tennessee, Vermont, Virginia, West Virginia and Wyoming

Though chocolate is a big hit, people still enjoy a variety of other candies that are not chocolate base.

Americans also have differing preferences on red licorice, lollipops, sweet disk candies, gummy candies and malted milk balls, and they’re generally divided between Red Vines and Twizzlers, Dum Dums and Charms Blow-Pops, Smarties and SweetTarts, Haribo and Trolli Gummies, and Whoppers and Milk Duds.

Instacart’s Halloween candy report identified five “sweet-toothed” states as having the “highest share of candy purchases,” which included Utah, Idaho, Alaska, Montana and Washington.

The five states that have the lowest share of candy purchases were Florida, Delaware, Alabama, North Carolina and South Carolina.

Nutrition influencer criticized for simple act in his video

An influencer and nutritionist has been criticized for a simple act most of us do frequently without a thought.

Ben Coomber, a nutrition coach, speaker and podcast host from the UK, shared footage showing himself preparing a healthy breakfast for his young child, hoping to inspire others to do the same.

The video has attracted quite a lot of attention, being viewed more than 10 million times alongside thousands of comments.

“A porridge recipe I make for my daughter,” Ben wrote in the post that accompanied the video.

“I’ve been giving this to her since she was one years old and loves it. Nutritious, good healthy fats, low in sugar, and easy to change the flavor by using different fruit, nuts, seeds and natural flavors – pea milk gives it good protein too, which many kids breakfasts lack.”

While most of his followers loved his recipe, there were some who claimed there was a flaw.

In the video he’s seen preparing the delicious breakfast, but it was what happened right before he served it up that had some commenters raising their eyebrows – he popped it in the microwave.

A cooking sin, according to some.

One commenter wrote: “Nice, but I have one question. I really don’t understand why you put it in the microwave? That takes all the nutrition out of the food!”

To which Ben responded: “How does it take it all out? If that is true (which knowing the research it isn’t), why isn’t my child, and many others, severely malnourished and suffering from such issues?”

Another raised the same point: “Nutritionist using microwave. Poor child.”

A third said: “You mix ‘healthy ingredients’ and you put it in the microwave …”

And there was more: “Lovely breakfast but to then go and ruin it by putting it in the microwave!”

Coomber shared the healthy porridge recipe he makes for his young daughter.
TikTok/@bencoomber
Some commenters took issue with the nutrition influencer putting the food in the microwave.
TikTok/@bencoomber

When Ben asked the commenter why he ruined it, she responded: “Microwaving your food is very unhealthy, it totally kills all the goodness in the food.”

There were plenty more critics, including: “Maybe don’t radiate the nutrients tho (sic) but yum I give my daughter similar.”

And: “A nutritionist that microwaves things. That’s a first.”

“Poor kid” another wrote.

So, is it true, does microwaving food destroy its nutrients?

That’s a myth, according to Anthony L. Komaroff, M.D. and Editor in Chief of the Harvard Health Letter.

“Microwave cooking is actually one of the least likely forms of cooking to damage nutrients,” Dr. Lomaroff said.

“That’s because the longer food cooks, the more nutrients tend to break down, and microwave cooking takes less time.

“So cooking a roast in an oven is more likely to cause some loss of nutrients than cooking the roast in a microwave. And boiling vegetables is more likely to rob them of nutrients than either cooking them in the oven or microwaving them.

“That’s because some nutrients leach out of the food into the water. So microwave cooking is not only fast, it’s also sometimes nutritionally advantageous.”

Meanwhile, the majority of reports find that food cooked in microwaves is “at least as nutritious as comparable food cooked by conventional methods”.

What else should I know about the Hunter’s Moon?

Full moons take place at the culmination of every lunar cycle. They appear when the moon’s light and energy are at their most potent. Full moons bring impact and information to light within three to four days before or after but are often most intense on the exact day they reach fullness. Full moons echo the patterns and situations initiated at the most recent new moon— but also the new moon in the same zodiac sign six months prior. Reflect back on what occurred near April 1, 2022, as it will directly reflect the situations, conversations and themes that pop up now.

The Hunter’s Moon was very important for Native American tribes and colonial farmers because it signaled the period in the year when it was crucial to gather meat to prepare for the winter months. Because the harvests were usually reaped in late September or early October, now it was much easier to see deer, fox and other animal game. This year, the Hunter’s Moon is also a full moon in Aries. The energy of this Fire sign will bring momentum, enthusiasm and passion to our lives. We may feel invigorated and inspired to launch in new directions or carve out the future. Aries is the first zodiac sign on the wheel, encouraging us to be courageous and take chances. Aries energy is fiery, confident and adventurous and focuses us on our innermost desires. Ruled by Mars, Aries is dominant, assertive and a leader — encouraging us to embrace what makes us unique and different.

When analyzing the cosmic energy of this full moon, we can see many significant planetary aspects that will further color the vibration of the lunation. The full moon stands opposite Venus, which will dramatically affect our need for companionship, emotional attachment and intimate relationships. If our unions are not aligned, there could be some rocky disagreements about these needs not being met or increased loneliness. However, the full moon harmonizes sweetly with Saturn, which can help bring stability and security to our emotions and personal lives. Mars, the ruler of this lunation, will also be highly active at this time. First, he will clash violently with Neptune, bringing weakness, illness, confusion or challenges to us. One moment we may feel fired up and the next on the bottom of the rung. Mars also conflicts with Mercury, which can bring short tempers, arguments and impulsiveness. Luckily, Mars also dances with Saturn, too, which can bring us the strength, patience and perseverance we need if we’re willing to ground ourselves and focus. This full moon’s ultimate message is that we can achieve self-actualization and step into our power — otherwise if we don’t, we may just be charging into battle looking for trouble. Use the energy wisely.
