Apple, Samsung Looking to Expand Production in India, Says MoS IT Rajeev Chandrasekhar

Apple and Samsung Electronics are among companies interested in increasing electronics production in India, a minister said, a boon for the country’s push to challenge neighboring China as a manufacturing hub.

The South Asian nation is seeking to expand its early success in smartphones to other product categories, Rajeev Chandrasekhar, India’s minister of state for technology, told Bloomberg TV’s Rishaad Salamat and Haslinda Amin on Friday. The country is launching a $2 billion (roughly Rs. 163 crore) plan to boost the local output of laptops, servers, tablets, and other electronics.

“We’ve had considerable success and tailwinds in the smartphone segment and we have increased interest from the likes of Apple and Samsung in expanding and growing here,” Chandrasekhar said. “We want to essentially replay that and add to that.”

India’s financial incentives for smartphone manufacturing have resulted in Apple and Samsung exporting billions of dollars of handsets from the country. The new IT hardware production-linked incentive plan has been drawn up for companies such as Dell Technologies, HP and Lenovo, Chandrasekhar said.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government also wants to attract chip fabrication and chip packaging plants to India, he said. India is set to revive its effort to lure prospective chipmakers into the country as projects already disclosed, including billionaire Anil Agarwal’s $19 billion (nearly Rs. 1,55,330 crore) plan, are taking time to get off the ground, Bloomberg News reported this month.

Motorola Razr Plus 2023 Reportedly Spotted on FCC, Key Specifications Tipped

Motorola Razr Plus 2023 is expected to hit the market soon. A top Lenovo executive confirmed a few weeks ago at the Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2023 that the company is working on the next generation of Razr smartphones. An earlier report suggested that the brand may launch a foldable smartphone with the Motorola Razr Plus name. Previous design render leaks have suggested possible features of the purported device. A new report reveals that the model was spotted on the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) website, cementing the idea of its imminent launch.

According to a MySmartPrice report, the Motorola Razr Plus 2023 device was spotted on the FCC website with the model number XT2321. As per the listing, the upcoming foldable smartphone will come with 5G support and will be backed by a 3,640mAh battery, which is larger than its predecessor. The Motorola Razr 2022 featured a 3,500mAh battery.

An earlier report suggested that the Motorola Razr Plus will come equipped with a 30W fast charging support but the FCC listing hints that the phone will support 33W fast charging.

The older report also added that the Motorola Razr Plus device will feature a 2.7-inch outer display, similar to that of its predecessor. The Motorola Razr 2022 is powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 SoC with up to 12GB of RAM.

Launched in China in August 2022 and available in a single Satin Black colour option, the Motorola Razr 2022 is priced at CNY 5,999 (roughly Rs. 70,750) for the base 8GB RAM + 128GB storage variant. The 8GB RAM + 256GB storage and 12GB RAM + 512GB storage variants are priced at CNY 6,499 (roughly Rs. 76,650) and CNY 7,299 (roughly Rs. 86,000), respectively.

Realme might not want the Mini Capsule to be the defining feature of the Realme C55, but will it end up being one of the phone’s most talked-about hardware specifications? We discuss this on Orbital, the Gadgets 360 podcast. Orbital is available on Spotify, Gaana, JioSaavn, Google Podcasts, Apple Podcasts, Amazon Music and wherever you get your podcasts.

Lenovo Asked to Pay $138.7 Million for InterDigital Patents by London Court

China’s Lenovo Group must pay US technology firm InterDigital $138.7 million (nearly Rs. 1,150 crore) for a licence for its portfolio of telecommunications patents, London’s High Court ruled on Thursday in the latest round of a long-running dispute.

InterDigital brought the lawsuit against Lenovo in 2019 over the terms on which Lenovo should take a licence of its patents which are essential to 3G, 4G and 5G standards.

The litigation, which has so far featured five separate trials, centres on the fair, reasonable and non-discriminatory (FRAND) terms of a licence for InterDigital’s patents.

Judge James Mellor said in a written ruling on Thursday that previous offers made by both Lenovo and InterDigital – which had offered $337 million (nearly Rs. 3,000) for a six-year licence – were not made on FRAND terms.

He said Lenovo should pay a $138.7 million “lump sum” to cover past and future sales of mobile devices from 2007 until the end of 2023.

Lenovo described the ruling as “a major win for the technology industry and the customers we serve”.

John Mulgrew, Lenovo’s chief intellectual property officer, said in a statement the decision “reinforces FRAND’s critical role in facilitating transparent and equitable licensing practices for standardized technologies”.

InterDigital’s Chief Legal Officer Josh Schmidt welcomed what he said was the ruling’s recognition that “a licensee should pay in full for the past infringement of standard essential patents”.

However, he said in a statement: “We plan to appeal, as we believe that certain aspects of the decision do not accurately reflect our licensing program.”

London-based patent lawyer Mark Marfe, who was not involved in the case, said the decision reinforced the High Court’s willingness to grant a global FRAND licence.

China is the only other jurisdiction where courts have set global FRAND rates for so-called standard essential patents.

Marfe added that “all eyes will be on the Unified Patent Court”, a common patent court for European Union member states which opens in June, to see whether it takes a similar approach.

Global PC Shipments Decline 16 Percent in 2022, Lenovo Secures Top Spot: Canalys

The global personal computer market witnessed a fall of 16 percent in 2022 as it battled a bad economic environment with rising energy costs and interest rates, as per a report by market research firm Canalys. The total shipments in 2022 were 285.1 million units. The total shipments of desktops and notebooks were down by 29 percent to 65.4 million units in the fourth quarter of 2022, though notebook shipments fell by 30 percent to 51.4 million units. Lenovo possesses the lion’s share of the worldwide PC shipment, followed by HP, Dell, Apple, and Asus in the top five positions. Global PC sales enjoyed massive growth during COVID-19 pandemic and the shipment volumes in 2022 are still favourable compared to the pre-pandemic period.

The report by Canalys said that total shipments of desktops and notebooks have declined by 29 percent to 65.4 million units in Q4 2022 in the backdrop of a global recession, increased inflation and higher interest rates. The total shipments in the whole year were 285.1 million units, marking a 16 percent drop as compared to the high demand in 2021 induced by the coronavirus pandemic that encouraged remote working. However, shipment volumes are promising as compared to the pre-pandemic phase, with total 2022 shipments 7 percent higher than in 2019.

The notebook shipments also fell by 30 percent to 51.4 million units in the last quarter of 2022 and 19 percent to 223.8 million units for the full year. While sales of desktops fell 24 percent to 14.1 million units in the fourth quarter and dropped 7 percent to 61.3 million units across the year.

In terms of market share, Canalys’s report shows that Lenovo continued to lead the market in the fourth quarter and full year. With shipments totalling 15.5 million units, the Chinese company grabbed a market share of 23.9 percent in 2022 with a 29 percent year-on-year decline.

HP remains the second larger contributor by shipping 13.2 million units and it faced a drop of 29 percent in Q4. In the full year, HP got a market share of 19.4 percent.

Dell, in the third position, faced a worse decline with a fall in shipments by 37 percent to 10.8 million units. Total shipments in 2022 were also down by 16 percent to 49.7 million units. The American-based company got 17.4 market share in the previous year.

Apple and Asus came in the fourth and fifth positions with 9.5 percent and 7.2 percent market shares, respectively, in 2022. As per the report, the Cupertino giant shipped 27.2 million Mac units in 2022, while Asus shipped 20.2 million units.

The Canalays report shows that all manufacturers in the top five positions saw a decline in shipments with Apple and Asus least affected.

Canalys said that the mute holiday season spending due to a bad economic environment, rising interest rates, slowdowns in hiring and expectations of a recession are intercepting demand for notebooks, desktops, and workstations.

Canalys Senior Analyst Ishan Dutt opined that the decline is especially stark as the corresponding period in 2021 brought about record shipments of notebooks and desktops. Vendors and retailers aimed to stimulate consumer spending with heavy discounting, but despite pockets of success, this was not enough to drive significant new sell-in. “With rising costs for energy and basic goods in key markets like the US and Europe, expenditure on big-ticket items like PCs has taken a back seat as consumers are prepared to delay refreshes. Meanwhile, on the commercial front, both public and private sector budgets faced tightening amid rising interest rates, slowdowns in hiring and expectations of a recession early this year,” he added.

The research company predicts that the PC market will witness recovery in late 2023, with momentum picking up in 2024. “This will be bolstered by an education demand bump in major markets as devices deployed during the pandemic peak reach the end of their life cycle. And even during the downturn, there will be areas that can deliver success for the industry, such as gaming, connected PCs and hybrid work, all of which were highlighted by announcements at CES 2023,” he added.

CES 2023: Lenovo Project Chronos Concept With Wearable-Free Motion Capture Technology Unveiled

Lenovo unveiled its new Project Chronos concept at CES 2023, which is a new motion capture system that does not require a dedicated wearable device. The new device is a prototype from the Chinese PC manufacturer. According to the official description, Project Chronos is a “glasses-free, full-body movement-driven experience.” Simply put, users do not need to wear a specialised headset/glasses or use motion capture activated controllers to use the technology. This is similar to Acer and Asus’ recent announcements of glass-free 3D solutions, but the focus here is on motion capture instead of 3D gaming.

According to the company, Project Chronos uses RGB depth cameras to simulate user actions in virtual reality (VR). Following this, the device outputs to an external display via DisplayPort or HDMI. Lenovo has said that Project Chronos will be HDMI compatible, despite the fact that its units lack specialised HDMI ports.

The concept device has three DisplayPort connections as well as four mini DisplayPorts. Chronos also has a twin 6W speaker system and a camera that can rotate 180 degrees. Lenovo promises that the device will make it “easier than ever before for users to enter 3D-rendered virtual environments.”

The Lenovo Project Chronos is powered by an Intel Core i7 Raptor Lake series processor. It also includes a discrete GPU, up to 32GB of RAM, and 512GB of internal storage. The device runs Windows 10 and comes pre-loaded with an in-house Chronos. This model weighs approximately 3.54 kilogrammes and measures 284 x 275 x 60.6mm.

Unfortunately, this is still a concept device, so it is unknown whether the company intends to release such a model anytime in the near future. Whether the Lenovo Chronos will fare better than the Microsoft Kinect is therefore yet to be seen.

Kinect is a line of motion sensing input devices that were first released by Microsoft in 2010. The devices typically comprise RGB cameras, infrared projectors and detectors that chart depth either through structured light or time of flight calculations, which can in turn be used to conduct real-time gesture recognition and body skeletal identification, among other functionalities. They also include microphones for speech recognition and voice control.

Microsoft’s Kinect was originally designed as a motion controller peripheral for Xbox video game consoles, differing from competitors (such as Nintendo’s Wii Remote and Sony’s PlayStation Move) in that it did not require physical controllers.

Motorola ThinkPhone Leaked Images Hint at Aluminium Frame, 6.6-Inch OLED Display: Report

Motorola ThinkPhone, the handset that was previously tipped to launch as the Moto Edge 40 or Lenovo ThinkPhone, has been leaked online. The images show off the design, build, and key specifications of the purported smartphone from Motorola. However, the latest leak seems to suggest the upcoming smartphone will be called ‘ThinkPhone by Motorola’. The images shed light on the purported handset’s specifications, including the display, build materials, camera setup, charging, and connectivity options.

Images of the ThinkPhone by Motorola were leaked by TheTechOutlook, and the handset will reportedly be powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Plus Gen 1 SoC paired with 8GB or 12GB of RAM and up to 512GB of storage under the hood. Tipster Evan Blass first leaked details of a similar handset back in October that was tipped to launch as the Lenovo ThinkPhone.

The report states that the purported smartphone will sport an aramid fiber inlay aluminium frame that measures 158.76mmx74.38mmx8.26mm. Meanwhile, the handset will reportedly feature a 6.6-inch OLED display (1,800×2,400 pixels) with a 144Hz refresh rate, along with support for HDR content.

The leaked images also hint at 68W fast charging support

On the camera front, the report states that the ThinkPhone by Motorola could feature a triple rear camera setup led by a 50-megapixel main camera, alongside a 13-megapixel ultra-wide angle lens, and a 2-megapixel depth sensor. The front-facing camera on the smartphone is said to be a 32-megapixel camera.

The leaked images also point to the presence of certain features that may allow integration with Lenovo’s ThinkPad laptops. This information, however, is blurred in the leaked images and hence fails to provide us with any clarity on what these features could be.

As mentioned previously a smartphone Motorola was recently tipped to launch as either the Moto Edge 40 Fusion as the Lenovo ThinkPhone in some markets, according to 3C certification database listing. However, it is not clear whether the latest leaked marketing images from TheTechOutlook correspond to the same device on the 3C certification database.

It is also important to note that, there has been no official confirmation from Lenovo or Motorola on the launch of the purported ThinkPhone.

Global PC Shipments Fall 15.5 Percent in Q3 2022 Amid Weak Demand: Counterpoint

The global PC shipments of Q3 2022 has once again faced double-digit fall, according to a Counterpoint report. For the third quarter, the global PC shipments declined 15.5 percent YoY and reached 71.1 million units. This comes a quarter after the shipments faced the largest YoY decline since Q2 2013. In Q3 2022, major laptop brands like Lenovo, HP, Dell, Asus and others recorded a fall compared to the shipments registered in Q3 2021. However, Apple turns out to be the only PC brand among the top manufacturers to have excelled, as compared to the same quarter in the previous year.

A recent Counterpoint research has reported a 15.5 percent decline in the global PC shipments in Q3 2022. As reported, the PC shipments have reached 71.1 million units this year, even lower than the data recorded in the previous quarter. This surprisingly comes amid the season of peak consumer device sales.

The research firm has held weak demand, across both consumer and commercial markets, to be the reason behind the growing decline. Some other listed reasons for the low YoY data are shrinking enterprise purchasing due to economic uncertainty and increasing promotional events, impacting the PC revenue market, as per the research firm.

Individually, Apple is the only PC brand that has performed better this quarter with 7 percent YoY shipment growth. Meanwhile, HP has recorded the 26.5 percent YoY decline, highest among the other manufacturers. For this quarter, the company has a 18 percent share in global PC shipments with 12.7 million units.

On the other hand, Asus has faced a 9 percent YoY shipment decline in the quarter. Lenovo noted a 16 percent YoY decline. Dell, meanwhile, sold 12 million units, with 17 percent market share in the global shipments. Its YoY decline stands at 20 percent for Q3 2022.
