Why a New York Giants-Bills trade for Josh Allen isn’t happening

The Buffalo Bills have been recently shuffling (dismantling?) their roster around star quarterback Josh Allen, leading a popular New York radio host to implore the New York Giants to inquire about Allen’s availability.

Evan Roberts of WFAN suggested on the air that Giants general manager Joe Schoen and head coach Brian Daboll — who both came from Buffalo — at least check in with the Bills on their plans for Allen, who he claims wants out of Buffalo for a bigger market to appease his girlfriend, actress/singer Hailee Steinfeld.

“Josh doesn’t have any toys anymore. Josh ain’t happy,” Roberts said. “Josh doesn’t want to live in Buffalo anymore. Josh has a girlfriend who would rather shop on Fifth Avenue in New York City than waste time in that toilet bowl known as Buffalo.

“Call up your friend, Joe, and say ‘What up’ about Josh Allen. ‘Is he available? Because if you’re sinking this ship…we have the sixth pick in the draft. We have Daniel Jones. We’ve got other assets. We’ll help you with your rebuild, and we’ll help out Josh Allen.’

“Schoen’s gotta pick up the phone and ask about Josh Allen. Why not?”

Why not? Plenty of reasons. First would be the cost. The Giants would have to trade for Allen and, as rich a franchise as they are, probably would still fall short of what the Bills would want in return.

Secondly, the notion that Allen wants out of Buffalo is “complete fiction,” says Ralph Ventre of Bills Central.

The man has done nothing but embrace the region and its fans since being drafted. Not to mention, what general manager in his right mind would trade away a soon-to-be 28-year-old franchise quarterback under contract at less than $50 million per year? According to Spotrac, Allen’s deal carries a lower average annual value than that of Deshaun Watson, Joe Burrow, Patrick Mahomes and Lamar Jackson.

Ventre points out that the Bills’ latest roster purge (traded All-Pro wide receiver Stefon Diggs to Houston this week) is just part of the constant flow of personnel teams go through and are simply rebuilding, which is normal.

He also reminded us that Buffalo was a 10-win team and playoff contender before Diggs’ arrival in 2020.

The Bills are simply ridding themselves of aging veterans with hefty price tags. It’s a youth movement to ensure salary cap flexibility in 2025.

Meanwhile, Buffalo returns eight offensive starters and eight defensive starters from a team that won a fourth consecutive AFC East division crown this past January. In Roberts’ imaginary world, however, that’s called a “garage sale.”

Forget Josh Allen. He’s untouchable. Especially now that the Bills are building a state-of-the-art stadium, to be opened in 2026.

Any additional talk about Allen to the Giants is intended to drive engagement for personal gain and nothing more. It’s a fantasy created to fill space and create content during the dry time leading up to the 2024 NFL draft.

Giants’ Wink Martindale sees Josh Allen as mix of these 3 sports greats

The New York Giants will have their hands full with the Buffalo Bills offensive this Sunday night, primarily quarterback Josh Allen, who is once again putting up impressive numbers this season.

Giants defensive coordinator Wink Martindale was asked on Thursday who he compared Allen to.

“Alright, you ready?” he asked. “(Quarterback Dan) Marino’s arm, (running back Derrick) Henry’s legs, and Steph Curry’s mindset. He thinks he can hit it anywhere on the court, and that’s the same way Josh is. He’s just an unbelievably elite quarterback in finding extra time to hit the open receiver in tight windows, and he’s got one of the strongest arms in the league.”

Allen is well-known in fantasy circles. He’s currently leading all quarterbacks in fantasy points. He has 14 total touchdowns (11 passing, three rushing) has 1,401 passing yards, and leads the NFL in completion percentage (73.1 percent).

One of the things that makes Allen even more dynamic and dangerous is his connection with star receiver Stefon Diggs, who is tied for the league lead with five touchdown receptions.

Martindale had a glowing review of him as well.

“He’s like those guys that sell a lot of jerseys. I mean, you can talk about all of them, as far as the guys who want the ball in game-winning situations, and he’s one of those guys,” Martindale said. “He makes a lot of plays, has great hands, runs routes, sometimes runs his own routes.

“I’ve talked to the defense about plaster coverage because the combination of those two with Josh and Diggs, I mean, it turns into, like, when you’re growing up playing football at recess. The play breaks down and you’ve got to defend the second play, the third play, and like I said, Josh is elite at avoiding the rush, buying time, and he can put the ball wherever he wants.”

The Giants are 14-point underdogs in this game and have an injury report that has spilled over to a second page. Not the week to get into a shootout.

6 keys to victory in Week 6

This season has been… we’ll call it less than stellar. To put it mildly. The New York Giants are at the bottom of the league in most categories and no signs of improvement are visible.

There are plenty of places to lay blame, but ultimately, the team has to work as a cohesive unit to have any hope of winning a game. They haven’t been able to do that thus far.

On Sunday, the Giants face the Buffalo Bills in prime time on the road.

The Bills’ season, while going better than the Giants, still hasn’t been what they expected. They’re coming off of a loss in London, and the last time they played after a loss, they beat the Dolphins, 48-20.

The Giants will have their hands full on Sunday, but there are six things they can do to help earn a win.

For the offense, it all starts and stops with the quarterback. Last week, Daniel Jones injured his neck due to a lack of protection. He has been sacked 29 times and because of that, he might not play on Sunday. Whether he ends up cleared and playing or Tyrod Taylor gets the nod, the line has got to step up and protect him. The offense’s ability to function relies solely on the quarterback’s ability to get the ball out. He can’t do that without protection.

The Giants haven’t thrown a deep pass since their win over the Arizona Cardinals in Week 2. A large part of that is due to the lack of protection around the quarterback, but it also stems from poor passes and a lack of effort by the receivers to make a catch. Airing it out worked against the Cardinals, so the Giants need to find a way to make it happen again.

This isn’t just about completing passes and pressuring the quarterback. Execution matters. The Giants have to make sure they are lined up properly at the start of each play, no holes in any line. They must run accurate routes, complete passes and run efficiently without turning the ball over.

They have to stop the opposing team, which means reading the offense and adjusting the defense accordingly. It means tackling the first time. It means putting forth more effort to ensure plays are positive for the Giants.

If you’re not practicing during the week like you play on Sunday, execution becomes incredibly difficult. Practice like you play, execute on the field.

Josh Allen is one of the top quarterbacks in the league today. But he is not infallible and has thrown five interceptions this season. That’s just one less than Jones has thrown, and Allen’s protection is far better than what the Giants provide Jones. The Giants have to force him to make a mistake on Sunday, and then they have to capitalize on that mistake to put points on the board.

Allen is surrounded by a team that can bounce back from mistakes if the other team doesn’t make use of those mistakes, so it’s not enough to force Allen to do something he’s uncomfortable with. When the Giants get the ball, they have to do something with it.

One of the biggest reasons a team is unsuccessful in any league is a lack of communication. This starts from the top. Brian Daboll has to communicate with his players the things he expects out of them, how he envisions certain plays to be run, what he sees on the field that helps the team make adjustments, etc.

On the field, the players must do their jobs to execute what Daboll sees, but they also see the field and must communicate additional adjustments. This goes for both sides of the ball. Whichever player is charged with making those adjustments and seeing the field for what it is has to make sure the rest of the field knows what to do.

This also falls under execution. Communication is what gets the players the information they need for the current play. Execution happens when players practice how they play on game day. And if a player doesn’t understand an assignment, a coach or team leader must help them adjust and learn. The team is only as strong as its weakest link.

Jasen Vinlove-USA TODAY Sports

The Giants have a lot of players who are injured, and many of them are impact players on their side of the ball. The NFL doesn’t care if there are injuries, neither do owners and neither do fans. Everyone expects a win regardless of who is on the field, so if the Giants are missing key players this week, it’s next man up. Everyone should know the play calls, everyone should know what is expected of them and everyone should know that the game rests on their shoulders.

Injuries make winning more difficult, but not impossible. And, who knows, maybe someone will surprise us on Sunday and be the missing piece the Giants have been looking for. Injuries are not an excuse. Next man up.

Giants vs. Bills: 3 causes for concern in Week 6

The New York Giants will go on the road to battle the Buffalo Bills in Week 6. It’s the latest in a long line of tough games to start the season for Big Blue.

The Giants will try to avoid falling to 1-5 on the year but with them being near two-touchdown road underdogs, that seems unlikely even for the largest optimist.

Here are three causes for concern headed into Sunday.

Zach Wilson bounces back in Jets’ shocking upset win over Bills

Zach Wilson was an accomplished basketball player growing up. On Sunday, he showed he knows how to rebound.

Wilson led the Jets to a shocking 20-17 upset win over the Bills at MetLife Stadium a week after playing one of his worst games as a pro.

Wilson had no interceptions in the game, played efficiently and used his legs to pull off the biggest win the Jets have had in years. The Jets defense intercepted Josh Allen twice and came up with some huge stops in the win over the high-powered Bills.

Wilson completed 18 of 25 passing for 154 yards and one touchdown pass. He also ran the ball four times for 25 yards. His only negative was a fumble.

The Jets go into their bye week an improbable 6-3. The Bills are now 6-2.

The Jets rediscovered their running game down the stretch and leaned on it to go down the field on the game-winning drive. The Jets took over on their own 4 after stopping the Bills with 7:53 left to play. James Robinson and Michael Carter combined for eight rushes for 74 yards to move the ball down the field and then Wilson hit Denzel Mims on third-and-5 at the Bills 18-yard line for a 12-yard gain to the 6.

The Jets failed to punch it into the end zone and had to settle for a 28-yard field goal by Greg Zuerlein with 1:43 left in the game.

Buffalo got one more chance, taking over at their own 25. Allen hit Stefon Diggs for a 26-yard pass on the first play but the play was wiped out by a holding call on Bills tackle Dion Dawkins. Bryce Huff then sacked Allen on second down and Allen fumbled the ball, losing 19 yards. On third-and-21, Allen threw an incomplete pass. On fourth down, Allen threw it deep to Gabe Davis, but Sauce Gardner had the coverage and the ball fell incomplete, sending MetLife into a celebration

It looked like the Bills might blow the Jets out early. Punter Braden Mann slipped on the opening kickoff and the Bills got the ball at their own 45-yard line. On the first play from scrimmage, Allen hit Stefon Diggs for a 42-yard gain. Diggs beat Gardner on the play.

The Bills got down to the Jets’ 13 but Allen threw his first interception of the game to Jordan Whitehead, ending the scoring hope.

Buffalo got the ball back and this time they cashed in on Allen’s legs. He led them on a 14-play, 67 yard drive that finished with a 1-yard Allen touchdown run that followed a 12-yard run by Allen that was first called a touchdown and then overruled and spotted at the 1.

The Jets got on the board with 35 seconds left in the first guard when Zuerlein booted a 53-yard field goal to make it 7-3.

In the middle of the second quarter, Allen led the Jets down the field on a drive that featured three passes to Diggs. Allen then ran through the Jets defense on third-and-2 for a 36-yard touchdown. Allen was not touched on the designed run as he went right around the Jets defense and scored his second touchdown of the game to put the Bills up 14-3.

Wilson, who played efficiently all day, led a Jets scoring drive of his own at the end of the half. He connected with Carter for a 6-yard touchdown with 35 seconds left in the half to cut Buffalo’s lead to 14-10.

Bills kicker Tyler Bass missed a 55-yard field goal attempt as time expired in the half.

The Jets went on a long drive to start the second half. The drive included a fake punt that was converted by Ashtyn Davis and a 12-minute delay due to a malfunction of the SkyCam in MetLife Stadium.

The drive ended when Von Miller sacked Wilson and the Jets quarterback fumbled at the Bills’ 28. A.J. Epenesa recovered and ended the Jets’ scoring hopes.

The Bills stumbled themselves, though. Quinnen Williams sacked Allen on the first play of the series and then Allen was intercepted by Gardner on the second play.

Four plays after Gardner’s second interception of the season, Wilson hit Robinson for a 7-yard touchdown that gave the Jets their first lead of the day at 17-14.

Bass tied the game up 17-17 with a 51-yard field goal with 13:38 to play in the game.

The Jets defense did a great job all day against the high-powered Bills offense. D.J. Reed came up with a huge pass breakup with 8:05 left in the fourth quarter on a deep third-down pass from Allen intended for Diggs to set up the long, go-ahead drive for the Jets.

Tom Brady and Josh Allen trade online smack talk ahead of The Match golf event

Tom Brady and Aaron Rodgers won’t face Josh Allen and Patrick Mahomes in this year’s version of Capital One’s The Match until June 1. However, the smack talk has already begun.

The 12-hole exhibition will take place (6:30 p.m. ET on TNT) at Wynn Las Vegas. Brady and Rodgers are veterans of the event, having played in it last year, although not as teammates.

Allen, 25, the Buffalo Bills quarterback, is looking to get his first win of any kind against Brady. Allen came into the league in 2018 but never defeated Brady when the latter was with the New England Patriots. Last December, Brady and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers defeated Allen and the Bills.

For now, Brady might also be the better golfer. He registered as an 8.1 handicap ahead of last year’s event. Allen played in the PGA Tour’s AT&T Pebble Beach Pro Am in February as a 9.0 handicap.

The two got their jabs in Monday after the pairings were announced, with Allen taking a shot at Brady Brand’s new line of golf gear, which was announced last week.
