Jio Working With Itel, Lava, and Nokia to Launch New Variants of JioBharat 4G Feature Phone: Report

Reliance Jio is offering JioBharat feature phones in India with 4G Internet connectivity, UPI (Unified Payments Interface) support, and a variety of apps. The company currently has JioBharat V2, JioBharat K1 Karbonn, and JioBharat B1 models in its portfolio. As per a new report, Reliance Jio is now working with several feature phone makers including Transsion group’s Itel, Lava, and Nokia to make new versions of affordable JioBharat 4G handsets. The company is aiming to convert approximately 250 million 2G users to 4G and beyond with this move.

As per a report by Economic Times, Sunil Dutt, President at Reliance Jio, revealed that Reliance Jio is working with Itel, Lava, and Nokia to make their new versions of budget-friendly JioBharat 4G phones, in a bid to convert around 250 million 2G users to go 4G and beyond. The company is gearing up to release an updated version of its Rs. 999 4G phone with support for UPI payments, WhatsApp, and live TV streaming.

“We wanted to establish the product in the market and in the minds of the consumer, so they could associate with it, relate with it. Today, all brands, whether it’s Itel, Lava or Nokia, are in touch with us in terms of how do we make it happen” the report quotes Dutt as saying.

He reportedly said that besides the existing four models, the company is planning to launch more JioBharat models later this year. “We are already finalising the range that will come in the next fiscal year, the phones could come in different sizes, form factors, or colours” he said.

Further, he opined that the 5G handset ecosystem has not been able to break into the sub-Rs. 10,000 price point to drive volumes. “A lot of them (smartphone brands) have different issues to deal with, which sort of clouded their priorities. But we are now working with the brands to ensure people get great 5G experiences,” Dutt said.

The JioBharat series currently comprises three models — JioBharat V2, JioBharat K1 Karbonn, and JioBharat B1. They are priced at Rs. 999, Rs. 999, and Rs. 1,299, respectively. They come with 4G connectivity, support for UPI, Jio apps, and more.

JioSpaceFiber Satellite-Based Giga Fibre Internet Service Demonstrated at India Mobile Congress

JioSpaceFiber was demonstrated on Friday at the 2023 India Mobile Congress as the country’s first satellite-based giga fibre Internet service. The mobile network service provider is working towards the launch of its satellite Internet services in India, to bring access to the Internet in areas that are not supported by traditional networks. JioSpaceFiber is expected to compete with rival service providers like Bharti Enterprises’ OneWeb, Amazon’s Project Kuiper, and Elon Musk’s Starlink, which are all looking to offer satellite internet services in the country.

Jio said it has already connected four remote locations across India with its JioSpaceFiber satellite-based giga fibre Internet service. The areas that have access to the new satellite service — presumably for testing purposes — are Gir in Gujarat, Korba in Chattisgarh, Nabrangpur in Odisha, and ONGC-Jorhat in Assam. The company has not yet provided a timeline for the launch of its services for customers in India, or how much it will cost.

According to the telecom provider the JioSpaceFiber satellite-based giga fibre Internet service will rely on Luxembourg-based satellite telecommunications network provider Société Européenne des Satellites (SES). The network’s medium earth orbit (MEO) satellites will provide gigabit-level Internet access using both SES’s O3b and new O3b mPOWER satellites.

“Jio has enabled millions of homes and businesses in India to experience broadband internet for the first time. With JioSpaceFiber, we expand our reach to cover the millions yet to be connected,” Reliance Jio Chairman Akash Ambani said in a prepared statement.

There’s no word from the company on when JioSpaceFiber will be launched in India, and the service will eventually compete with service providers like OneWeb (Bharti), Project Kuiper (Amazon), and Starlink (SpaceX). Jio will also benefit from being one of the first providers to bring fibre-grade Internet services to users in remote regions, adding to its existing 450 million customers is the country.

After Reliance, Tata Group Also Said to Announce AI Partnership With Nvidia

India’s Tata Group is set to announce an AI partnership with US chip firm Nvidia, a source with direct knowledge of the matter told Reuters.

An announcement is expected later in the day, the source added.

Meanwhile, India’s Reliance and Nvidia said on Friday they have formed a partnership to create AI language models and generative apps for millions of telecom users of the Indian company.

Nvidia will provide the computing power required for the efforts, while Reliance unit Jio will manage and maintain the AI infrastructure and oversee customer engagement, the companies said.

“Reliance will create AI applications and services for their 450 million Jio (telecom) customers and provide energy-efficient AI infrastructure to scientists, developers and startups across India,” Nvidia said.

Nvidia globally has a near-monopoly on the computing systems used to power services like ChatGPTOpenAI‘s blockbuster generative AI chatbot. The AI powering such apps is known as a large language model because it takes in a text prompt and from that writes a human-like response.

The partnership will give Reliance access to the latest version of Nvidia’s Grace Hopper Superchip, its AI chips that are optimized to perform AI inference functions that effectively power apps like ChatGPT.

Reliance said the new AI infrastructure will speed up a range of India’s key AI projects, including chatbots, drug discovery, and climate research.

Digital services company Jio Platforms on Friday posted a 12.5 percent year-over-year rise in net profit at Rs. 5,098 crore in the June 2023 quarter on account of subscriber additions and better realisation per user. The company had posted a net profit of Rs. 4,530 crore in the same period a year ago.

The revenue from operations of Jio Platforms came in at Rs. 26,115 crore during the reported quarter, up 11.3 percent from Rs. 23,467 crore over the year-ago period.

The net subscriber addition of the company surpassed 90 lakh with total data traffic jumping over 28 percent YoY to 33.2 billion gigabytes for the quarter.

The average revenue per user, measured in terms of ARPU, improved by 2.8 percent YoY to Rs. 180.5 fuelled by a better subscriber mix and ramp-up of wireline business.

Jio Platforms comprises telecom arm Reliance Jio Infocomm, a host of startups, and music and video streaming apps.

“5G adoption and FTTH ramp-up drive strong 28.3 percent Y-o-Y growth in data usage as monthly data traffic on the Jio network crosses 11 Exabytes during the first quarter of FY’24,” the company said. The Per Capita monthly data usage increased 20 percent year-on-year to 24.9GB.

Jio has deployed over 1,15,000 sites with about 6,90,000 5G cells covering more than 90 percent of census towns.

“Jio continues to make rapid progress in rolling out its True5G network. Jio is on track to complete pan India 5G rollout before December 2023,” Reliance Jio Infocomm, Chairman, Akash M Ambani said.

Jio Platforms said that its JioBharat platform is ready for scale-up with successful initial trials of 1 million devices.

” The new JioBharat phone is another innovation by Jio combining network and device capabilities to help accelerate the ‘2G-mukt Bharat’ vision and democratize the internet. With these investments, Jio is embarking on a journey to accelerate growth momentum across connectivity and digital platforms over the coming years,” Ambani said.

Jio Platforms CEO Kiran Thomas said that around 98 percent of new additions in JioFibre are coming in for postpaid plans.

He said the company is planning to use air fibre technology to accelerate broadband connectivity to homes with a target to connect 100 million at the earliest.

Jio Platforms telecom arm Reliance Jio reported over 12 percent rise in net profit to Rs. 4,863 crore in the June 2023 quarter.

The revenue from operations increased by 9.9 percent to Rs. 24,042 crore during the reported quarter from Rs. 21,873 crore in the June 2022 quarter.

The operating revenue growth was fuelled by subscriber gains in the connectivity business and the scale-up of digital services, according to a statement.

EBITDA grew 14.8 percent year on year led by revenue increase with better margins, it said. Finance Cost is lower due to repayment of short-term loans in 1Q FY24.

JioPhone 5G Alleged Live Images Showcase Design; Specifications and Launch Timeline Tipped

Reliance Jio, Mukesh Ambani’s telecom firm, is set to launch a JioPhone 5G device later this year. According to alleged hands-on images tweeted by a tipster, the JioPhone will likely sport a dual rear camera setup and come in a black colourway. Additionally, the tipster has also hinted at a launch timeline for the device and provided some key specifications for the smartphone. While we cannot confirm if these images are, indeed, of the unreleased JioPhone 5G, but if they are, the images do give more insights into the upcoming budget device.

A twitter user (@ArpitNahiMila) has posted live images of the purported JioPhone 5G, showcasing the front and back design of the handset. In the images, the dual rear camera module is situated at the top centre, likely led by a 13-megapixel AI camera, accompanied with a 2-megapixel secondary lens, according to the Twitter user.

The display sports a waterdrop-style notch housing the front camera, which could be a 5-megapixel shooter. The back of the phone is supposedly made of fibre plastic body. The Jio logo can also be seen on the back of the device.

Additionally, the tweet mentions that the JioPhone 5G is expected to launch later this year, between Diwali and New Year and will likely be priced under Rs. 10,000. The tipster also mentions that the handset could be powered by a Unisoc 5G or a Dimensity 700 SoC.

Gadgets 360 could not verify if these images are, indeed, of the upcoming JioPhone 5G.

A previous report, claimed that the JioPhone 5G could be powered by the Snapdragon 480 SoC paired with 4GB of RAM and 32GB of onboard storage.

The 5G phone could likely feature a 6.5-inch HD+ LCD display with 90Hz refresh rate and could run on Android 12 out-of-the-box. The JioPhone could pack a 5,000mAh battery with support for 18W charging.

This is not the first time that Ambani’s Jio is working to launch an affordable device for the masses. In October last year, the company debuted its first-ever laptop, called the JioBook.

The budget laptop packs an 11.6-inch display, Snapdragon 665 SoC, and a 5,000mAh battery. It was launched at Rs. 15,799.

JioCinema Sets New Viewership Record of 24 Million Views During RCB vs CSK IPL Match

JioCinema has broken its own record of viewership, with the viewership during the Chennai Super Kings vs Royal Challengers Bangalore match crossing 24 million. This is, so far, the highest viewership for any match in the current IPL 2023 season, with JioCinema breaking its own previous record of 22 million which was set on April 12. In the last over of the second innings of the match, the number of viewers on Jio Cinema reached 24 million. Chennai Super Kings won the thrilling match by 8 runs.

The BCCI awarded TV and digital broadcasting rights of the Tata IPL 2023 to different companies, and digital is seeing its direct benefit. JioCinema is streaming IPL matches for free this season for all, as the streaming platform does not have a subscription model as of now. This has further helped in bolstering IPL’s viewership through the growing popularity of digital streaming. Additionally, JioCinema has also improved the quality of the stream from this season, offering the IPL 2023 stream in up to Ultra-HD resolution for all matches, as well as offering multiple languages for commentary and graphics, and different user-selectable camera angles.

The achievement of 24 million viewers is particularly impressive, given that the final match of the 2019 season recorded the highest viewership on Disney Hotstar at 18.6 million, prior to JioCinema’s entry into the segment. IPL is currently in its league stage and as of now, JioCinema has broken all previous viewership records for the tournament. As the IPL moves towards the finals, the number of viewers on JioCinema is likely to increase further. The company claims that millions of new viewers are connecting to IPL daily through its streaming app.

The streaming service is expected to start charging a subscription fee following the conclusion of IPL 2023, and has also announced a massive film and web series slate of content set to come to the streaming platform in the coming months. The platform was also the streaming partner for the 2022 FIFA World Cup, although securing the rights for IPL has been a significant boost for JioCinema given India’s preference for cricket over other sports.
