Jio Installs 1 Lakh Towers to Expedite 5G Rollout in India, Department of Telecom Data Shows

Billionaire Mukesh Ambani’s Reliance Jio has installed close to 1 lakh telecom towers, nearly 5 times of its nearest competition, to roll out India’s fastest and deepest penetration 5G telecom network to provide ultra-high speed internet, according to the latest DoT data.

The latest daily status report from the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) National EMF Portal shows Jio has installed 99,897 BTS (base transceiver station) across 2 frequencies it owns (700 MHz and 3,500 MHz). In comparison, Bharti Airtel has 22,219 BTS.

Additionally, for every base station, Jio has 3 cell sites while Airtel has 2, the March 23 report said. More towers and cell sites mean faster speed. According to the February 28 report of Ookla, the global leader in network intelligence and connectivity insights, Jio’s top median speed is 506 Mbps (megabytes per second) as compared to 268 Mbps of Airtel.

“5G has been in place in India for over four months and already it’s having a tremendous impact on the state of mobile in the country,” Ookla said in the report.

“Speedtest Intelligence data shows that median download speeds across India increased by 115 percent since before the 5G launch, from a 13.87 Mbps median download speed in September 2022 to 29.85 Mbps in January 2023.” 5G performance has increased across early 5G adopters in most of the telecom circles, Kolkata achieved the fastest median 5G download speeds in January 2023 at above 500 Mbps.

“Jio experienced a top median 5G download speed of 506.25 Mbps in Kolkata, while Airtel of 268.89 Mbps in Delhi,” it said. Airtel and Jio have ambitious targets in terms of the 5G network rollout. “From 5G networks’ inception, 5G availability across 5G-capable devices has steadily increased, reaching 8.0 percent for Airtel and 5.1 percent for Jio,” it said.

India has over half a billion internet users, making it the second-largest online market worldwide, just behind China. 5G telecom services were launched in October 2022.

“Jio’s USD 25 billion investment seems to be paying off. In January 2023 Jio achieved median 5G download speeds above 400 Mbps across ten telecom circles. Jio’s True 5G network is based on a 5G Standalone (5G SA), which doesn’t rely on a 4G LTE network. “While Jio’s initial 5G speeds fluctuated massively – from low single-digit to speeds well above 800 Mbps, which pointed to the operator recalibrating its networks, Jio’s 5G performance has stabilized over the past four months. In January 2023, Jio’s 5G early adopters experienced speeds ranging from 246.49 Mbps median download speed in Himachal Pradesh to 506.25 Mbps in Kolkata,” Ookla said.

In comparison, “Airtel’s 5G early adopters experienced speeds ranging from a 78.13 Mbps median download speed in Kolkata to 268.89 Mbps in Delhi,” it added.

Last month, Akash Ambani, chairman of Reliance Jio, at a post-budget webinar of the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology stated that India’s largest telecom company will undertake the fastest 5G rollout in the world.

Reliance Jio is a step-down subsidiary of Reliance Industries which is helmed by his father, Mukesh Ambani. Bharti Airtel had on Friday stated that its ultra-fast 5G service is available to customers in 500 cities in the country. “Airtel added 235 cities to its network, making it one of the largest rollouts to date.”

Airtel Pips Jio in 5G Rollout Race, Expands Next-Generation Network Coverage to 500 Cities

Telecom operator Bharti Airtel overtook Reliance Jio in 5G roll-out with the expansion of the network to additional 235 cities, taking its total reach to 500 cities.

Reliance Jio has so far announced the expansion of its ultra high-speed fifth generation (5G) network to 406 cities.

“Bharti Airtel…ultra-fast 5G service is available to customers in 500 cities in the country. Airtel added 235 cities to its network, making it one of the largest roll-outs to date,” the company said in a statement.

“Airtel was the first to offer 5G services in October 2022, and today’s mega launch is our promise to connect every Airtel customer in the country with ultra-fast Airtel 5G Plus. We have already covered 500 cities and are adding 30 to 40 cities every single day. By September of 2023, we expect to expand our 5G footprint to all of urban India,” Bharti Airtel CTO Randeep Sekhon said.

According to industry players, India has become the fastest country in the world to roll-out 5G networks.

Against the target of rolling out 5G in 200 cities before March 31 set by the government, the service is now available in over 900 cities.

Airtel said that its 5G Plus runs on a technology that has the widest acceptance in the world with the most developed ecosystem which ensures that all 5G smartphones in India seamlessly work on the Airtel network.

“Second, the company promises to deliver the best experience – between 20 to 30 times higher speeds than today (compared to 4G) coupled with a brilliant voice experience and super-fast call connect,” the statement said.

Airtel has also removed the 5G data usage limit cap to match with Jio’s offer.

Earlier 5G data usage was limited to the same as the daily quota which customers had in their 4G subscription plan.

“Customers will now be able to experience ultra-fast, reliable and secure 5G Plus services without having to worry about data exhaustion as the company removes the capping on data usage across all existing plans,” the statement said.

The company has also deployed the first 5G private network at Bosch facility in Bengaluru, and also at Mahindra & Mahindra’s Chakan manufacturing facility to make it the first 5G-enabled auto manufacturing unit.

Jio’s Unlimited 5G Plans Put Airtel on Back Foot in India, Delay Profits: JP Morgan

The launch of cheaper postpaid plans with unlimited 5G by Reliance’s Jio has put rival Bharti Airtel on the back foot in the Indian market and may delay recovery in its key profit metric, JP Morgan analysts said on Thursday.

Jio, the telecoms unit of Indian conglomerate Reliance Industries, launched new postpaid plans last week, starting from Rs. 399 ($4.85) that included over-the-top (OTT) packages, forcing Bharti Airtel to roll out similar plans.

“We were surprised to see Bharti turn defensive with counter-plans,” JP Morgan analysts said in a client note, adding that unlimited 5G data consumption would also delay any kind of 5G monetisation, pressure the expansion of average revenue per user (ARPU) and delay 4G prepaid tariff increases.

Bharti’s new family plans can drive ARPU drops of Rs. 100-200 per subscriber and any subsequent price matching to that of Jio can drive further ARPU drops of Rs. 50-100 per subscriber, the analysts said.

Stiff competition to attract 5G subscribers would reduce the pricing power for the operators and they will not be able to monetise 5G by charging a premium, they added.

Analysts kept their “under weight” rating on Bharti Airtel, saying that ARPU expansion for Bharti was at risk and could even reduce over 2024-25 as 5G price wars take place.

Both, Jio and Bharti Airtel have been rolling out 5G services across the country.

Airtel, Jio, Vodafone Idea Directed to Improve Service Quality Immediately, Report State Level Call Drop Data

Amid rising instances of service quality issues and consumer complaints, TRAI has asked telecom operators to report call drop and outage data at the state level also and take immediate steps to “demonstrate visible improvement” in quality of service and connectivity experience for consumers across the country. On the issue of pesky promotional calls and messages, TRAI said telcos will be asked to implement an AI/ML (Artificial Intelligence/Machine Learning) tool which has been found to be effective in detecting and blocking spam that is pushed by unregistered telemarketers through telephone numbers (10 digits numbers).

This new comprehensive tool (currently being tested by Vodafone Idea) is expected to be implemented in about two months by the industry, reducing the menace of unsolicited promotional messages, TRAI Chairman PD Vaghela said.

TRAI officials met telecom companies including Reliance Jio, Bharti Airtel and Vodafone Idea on Friday to review service quality issues, norms for 5G services as well as on unsolicited commercial communications.

The regulator made it clear to players that more stringent service benchmarks are on the anvil when it comes to calling quality parameters, and that a consultation process will be initiated by TRAI (Telecom Regulatory Authority of India) in the coming months for this.

TRAI’s diktat to telecom companies to improve service quality is bound to cheer mobile customers, irked by call drops and patchy networks. While 5G call data will be reported under the current system for now, separate QoS (Quality of Service) indicators for these next-generation services will come up eventually.

“We have been examining the issue of call drops and service quality, and there has been a rise in complaints also after 5G implementation. We have told operators to improve the quality of service immediately, whether or not it is due to the rollout of 5G services,” Vaghela told reporters after the meeting.

He added: “Time has come to relook at the parameters completely.” While an overhaul of call quality benchmarks is on the anvil, companies even now will have to report call drop and outage data at a state level, and perhaps at a later stage at the district level as well.

This means that the data reported will be more granular and detailed (for 29 states) as against the current practice of data reported at the level of Licenced Service Areas (22 LSAs in all) and averaged on a quarterly basis.

The state-level reporting will ensure that the problem areas and patchy networks in certain States, especially North East, can be clearly identified, and corrective action can be taken by players. While such detailed reporting (at state level) will start immediately, making it part of QoS norms, and imposing financial disincentives will take some time, Vaghela said.

“We have decided today that we will also monitor State level quality of service,” Vaghela pointed out.

The parameters will be made more tighter going forward, he said adding a consultation paper will be taken out in this regard.

“The authority has directed telecom service providers (TSPs) to take urgent steps to demonstrate visible improvement in quality of service and quality of experience by consumers. TSPs were asked to analyse the issue of call muting and one-way speech and take corrective action on priority,” TRAI said in a statement.

While rolling out 5G network, operators will need to ensure that there is least disturbance or degradation of service quality of existing telecom services. During the meeting, telecom operators admitted that there were some “problems” during the rollout of 5G, but assured that those have now been sorted out.

“TSPs were further informed that TRAI is closely monitoring the incidences of long duration network outages. Such outages adversely affect quality of services and consumer experience,” TRAI said in a statement.

All the telecom providers were asked to report such outages to the regulator in any district or State. TRAI may consider bringing suitable regulation in this regard, if required, the statement added.

TRAI also asked players to plan and implement systems for online data collection for QoS benchmarks and their processing to generate performance reports with License Service Area, State level or lower granularity.

“Considering the scale and the size of the network being set up for rollout of 5G services, and important use cases being developed by different industry verticals, TRAI asked TSPs to implement systems for internal QoS monitoring…on 24×7 and 360-degree basis,” it said.

The exploitation of network features as per standard and adoption of AI/ML techniques for service quality monitoring and management was also suggested, TRAI statement said.

During the meeting, the regulator also took stock of issues around unsolicited commercial communications (UCC), and emphasized the need to curb instances of telemarketers misusing phone numbers to send out promotional messages.

“We are also going to write to all the key Ministries and Departments, RBI and other regulators…because they have a significant influence on banks, financial institutions and other stakeholders. We are going to ask them to take action with regard to cleaning of message templates and removing unnecessary headers,” Vaghela said.

States and Departments are being sensitised as they also engage telemarketers for sending out important information, say on benefits of various schemes.

The telecom regulator on Thursday had issued directions to telecom operators to act swiftly to stop the misuse of headers and message templates, as it came down heavily on unauthorised, pesky promotional messages by telemarketers.

To stop such misuse and curb unwanted messages, the regulator has directed access service providers (telecom operators) to reverify all registered headers and message templates on Distributed Ledger Technology (DLT) platform and block all unverified headers and message templates within 30 and 60 days, respectively.

“We are working on creating a system based on AI/ML. Vodafone Idea has already implemented a sandbox experiment and it is successful, so we will use that. AI/ML allows identification of telemarketers or spammers using 10 digit numbers and those can be blocked…in next two months we should be able to implement that all over the country,” Vaghela said.

One of the telecom operators, attending the TRAI’s QoS review meeting, complained that service quality is also being affected by some low-quality handsets in the market.

TRAI has advised players to write to the Telecom Department, to flag the issue of low-quality handsets.

5G Services in India to Attract Rs. 1.5 Lakh Crore in Investments in 2023, Tariff Hikes Likely: Report

From connecting people with 5G services to lowering the cost of operations, the country’s revitalised telecom sector is witnessing the bloom of reforms, and is set to attract more than Rs 1.5 lakh crore investments to build up networks in the new year.

Once the poster boy of India’s growth story, then a debt-laden segment that saw many players withering away and now riding the wave of reforms as well as big-ticket investments, the telecom sector turned a new chapter in 2022.

While the Adani group is yet to unveil its full-fledged plan for the telecom business, Reliance Industries Chairman Mukesh Ambani has committed Rs. 2 lakh crore investment for rolling out a 5G network across the country by December 2023.

“It has been an exciting year because of the launch of 5G, a much-awaited technology for 4-5 years. This is a big step forward. We look forward to a robust rollout of 5G next year because this year is just the beginning.

“We are all working on use cases. We are telling state governments, ministries, startups and innovators to come out with innovative use cases in the Indian context, which will unlock businesses and will also solve some public problems, some challenges,” Telecom Secretary K Rajaraman told PTI.

He also said the government will continue to take measures that will lower the cost of operations for telecom operators, a move that will result in higher margins for the sector, which had been reeling under a debt burden for more than a decade.

Reliance Jio has committed Rs 87,946.93 crore for the spectrum that it has to pay over a period of 20 years, leaving a balance of Rs 1.12 lakh crore. While the company had invested a partial amount in building its own 5G core, it will invest the majority of the Rs 1.12 lakh in capex for 5G in 2023, according to sources.

Bharti Airtel is expected to invest in the range of Rs 27,000-28,000 crore and state-owned BSNL around Rs 16,000 crore in 2023 for rolling out an indigenously developed 4G network by TCS and C-DoT-led consortium. Later, the system will be upgraded to 5G.

Together, investments worth more than Rs 1.5 lakh crore are expected in the telecom sector.

COAI Director General SP Kochhar said the structural and procedural reforms in the telecom sector approved by the government last year such as e-KYC, doing away with Spectrum Usage Charge (SUC) for spectrum acquired in a future auction, 100 per cent FDI under the automatic route as well as rationalisation of bank guarantee, Adjusted Gross Revenue (AGR), interest rates and penalties, and facilitating Right of Way (RoW) have positively impacted the sector in 2022.

Digital Infrastructure Providers Association Director General TR Dua said that most state governments have followed reforms led by the Centre and came up with telecom infrastructure-friendly policies this year.

Recently, Minister of State for Telecom Devusinh Chauhan informed Parliament that telecom operators are installing on an average of 2,500 base stations per week for providing 5G services in the country and 20,980 mobile base stations were installed as of November 26.

Telecom gear majors — Nokia and Ericsson — have ramped up their manufacturing in India. The government has also received investment commitments of Rs 4,115 crore from 42 firms shortlisted under the Production Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme for making telecom gears.

Nokia said it is witnessing the world’s fastest rollout of the 5G network in India.

“In 2023, we hope to see continued government support in enabling the digital ecosystem to truly tap the benefits of the socio-economic applications of 5G technology. 2023 is also expected to witness wider adoption of private networks by enterprises and businesses for enhanced efficiency and security,” a Nokia India spokesperson said.

Ericsson’s MD, India & Head of Networks, Southeast Asia, Oceania and India, Nitin Bansal said that enhanced Mobile Broadband (eMBB) and Fixed Wireless Access (FWA) are expected to be the initial 5G use cases in India. This technology will help to bridge the digital divide by addressing the concern of limited fixed broadband penetration levels and improving the data experience while on the move.

Tech Mahindra President, Communications, Media and Entertainment Business, and CEO, Network Services, Manish Vyas said 5G will be used to develop revolutionary applications and innovative use cases in industries, such as manufacturing, healthcare, BFSI, and autonomous driving.

“We see 5G for Enterprise (5G4E) as our next growth strategy, and we are already doing multiple pilots on it across the world,” he said.

IDEMIA India, Senior Vice President, Rahul Tandon said as India ushers in 5G connectivity it opens up many new capabilities to enhance productivity and safety of not only online transactions but Machine2Machine (M2M) transactions as well.

While telecom operators are investing billions in building a 5G network, a senior Airtel official said there are no applications as of now that can help companies monetise 5G.

“5G is helping in offloading traffic from the 4G network. 5G is a very efficient and better technology but at present the applications like video, gaming etc are working well on 4G. We are yet to see any applications that can specifically help in monetising 5G,” the official said.

He also said the company expects growth to come from customers upgrading their service from 2G to 4G, pre-paid to post-paid and post-paid to home broadband, and tariff hikes.

The annual tariff hike by telecom operators — Bharti Airtel, Vodafone Idea and Jio — in the range of 18-42 per cent has brought the companies a sustainable level of Average Revenue Per User (ARPU) situation in 2022.

Vodafone Idea had taken lead in November 2019 to raise mobile services rates by up to 42 per cent. Bharti Airtel and Reliance Jio followed VIL in raising tariffs.

The tariff hike in 2019 was after a gap of about five years. The data prices had nosedived by 95 per cent to Rs 11.78 per GB in 2017 from Rs 269 per GB in 2014.

Bharti Airtel is running a pilot to increase its entry-level mobile plan by about 57 per cent. The company has increased the minimum recharge price for a 28-day mobile phone service plan by about 57 per cent to Rs 155 in Haryana and Odisha.

A company official said it will take a look at the result of the tariff increase in another six weeks to decide on hiking the tariffs across India.

While VIL has been able to sail through 2022, the year 2023 is likely to be a make-or-break year for the company as the debt-ridden company awaits the government to pick around 33 per cent stake under the scheme to convert interest dues into equity.

A note by JM Financial in October 2021 said that VIL will need to have an APRU of at least Rs 190-200 by March 2023 to survive but the company is far from the mark and is struggling to check subscriber churn.

Telecom Firms Bharti Airtel, Reliance Jio to Hike Tariff by 10 Percent, Says Jefferies: Report

Users may have to shell out more for mobile recharge plans in the coming years. Telecom companies in India will hike tariffs by up to 10 percent by March next year, investment banking firm Jefferies has reportedly said. Bharti Airtel and Reliance Jio are said to increase their tariffs in the last quarter of fiscal 2023, 2024, and 2025. Increasing pressure on the revenue and margins of the companies are likely to be the key reasons for tariff rise. The three major Indian telecos reported moderate gains in average revenue per user (ARPU), a key performance indicator for telecom firms, in the September quarter.

A report by Business Insider, quoting Jefferies, suggests that Bharti Airtel and Reliance Jio could announce a 10 percent increase in tariff in the last quarter of the fiscal years 2023, 2024, and 2025. As per the analysts, increasing pressure on the revenue and margins of the companies as well as moderate gains in average revenue per user (ARPU) are the major factors behind this price hike.

In the quarter that ended September, Jio’s ARPU reportedly increased 0.8 percent, while Vodafone Idea and Airtel reported an increase of 1 percent and 4 percent respectively.

The analysts further state that the rise in subscriber churn, which refers to the number of customers that stop paying for service in a given period, and mobile number portability (MNP) requests, are intimations of competition in the telecom space.

Airtel seems to have started implementing the price hike by withdrawing the Rs. 99 plan under which it offered 200MB of data and calls at the rate of Rs. 2.5 paise per second. Last month, the company reintroduced the Rs. 99 mobile phone service plan with a price hike of about 57 percent to Rs. 155. The new plan offers unlimited calling, 1GB data, Wynk Music access, and 300 SMS for 24 days. This pack is available in a few circles.

As per recent TRAI data, Jio added 7,20,000 wireless subscribers during September, while Bharti Airtel increased its mobile users count by 4,12,000. Vodafone Idea is facing a subscriber count decline by 40,00,000 and its base shrank to 24.91 crore. Both Airtel and Jio are currently leading in 5G deployment in the country.

5G Enabled on iPhones in India: How to Activate 5G on Airtel and Jio on Your iPhone

Apple has just announced the arrival of official 5G support on iPhones in India, starting at 11:30pm on December 13, for subscribers who have Jio and Airtel connections. With the release of iOS 16.2, users in India will be able to take advantage of 5G network speed in areas where coverage is available. 5G support will be activated on all compatible iPhone models released in 2020 or later. These include the iPhone 12, iPhone 13, and iPhone 14 families as well as the latest iPhone SE model. Users who currently have a 4G SIM and data plan will not need to change anything, as Airtel and Jio SIMs are compatible.

Which iPhones are 5G compatible?

Here is a complete list of 5G-enabled iPhone models:

How can I activate 5G on my iPhone in India?

On your iPhone, open the Settings app and tap General, then Software Update. You will see the option to download iOS 16.2. Accept the terms and conditions, and download the update. Note: It is always advisable to back up all your data before installing a software update.

Once the update has been installed and your iPhone has restarted, you might see a new 5G status icon in the notification area (if Wi-Fi is not currently active). If not, you can open the settings app and tap to Cellular > Cellular Data Options. If you are using two active SIMs, you can choose which one you want to use 5G through.

You can leave the default Auto mode enabled if you want your iPhone to dynamically adjust your connection speed to help save battery power. In this mode, your device will switch to 4G LTE when you aren’t doing anything that requires high-speed data, as the older standard requires less power. Switching to 5G On in the Cellular Data Options settings will force your device to always use 5G when coverage is available. Alternatively, switching to LTE will ignore 5G, and could be useful to prolong battery life.

iPhone 5G update in India: iOS 16.2

Other than enabling 5G support on iPhones, iOS 16.2 and iPadOS 16.2 which released at the same time, introduce a few new features and include bug fixes and security updates. There’s a new app called Freeform, which allows users to scribble ideas and diagrams, and collaborate with others. This app was demonstrated prior to the release of iOS 16 earlier this year, but is only now being rolled out. It will be available on Macs as well as iPads and iPhones, and users can sketch using Apple Pencil on compatible iPads.

Apple Music Sing is a new karaoke mode that allows users to sing along to their favourite songs, either solo or duetting with the original singer, as lyrics are displayed on screen. The Emergency SOS Via Satellite feature, which is exclusive to the iPhone 14 family as of now, will also roll out in supported regions. Apple notes improvements to the lock screen UI, most notably the option to change how notifications are displayed and disable your homescreen wallpaper on the iPhone 14 Pro series’ always-on display.

iPhone users will no longer be able to allow their devices to receive files via AirDrop from strangers all the time. A 10-minute window was introduced in China a few weeks ago, and is now being applied around the world. Apple says this will prevent spam, although critics have noted that it could also prevent information being shared ad-hoc, such as during protest movements.

Other miscellaneous changes include multiplayer support over FaceTime for Game Centre games, and a game Activity widget that lets users see what friends are playing; new Sleep and Medications widgets; the ability to find photos in Messages by describing their content in words; improved iCloud Private Relay controls; improved crash detection on the iPhone 14 series; and an iCloud data syncing bug fix.
