Jio May Soon Receive Regulatory Approval for Launch of Satellite Internet Services in India: Report

JioSpaceFiber — the upcoming satellite-based gigabit fibre service from Reliance Jio — could launch in India soon, according to a report. The telco has reportedly made all of the mandatory submissions to the Indian National Space Promotion and Authorisation Centre (IN-SPACe) and approval from the regulator will allow the company to launch its satellite communication services in the country. The telecom operator previously demonstrated its satcom technology at the 2023 India Mobile Congress last year and it could soon become the first satellite-based giga fibre Internet service in the country.

Citing people aware of the developments, The Economic Times reports that Jio could soon receive all of the required approvals and authorisations from IN-SPACe for the launch of the company’s satcom services in the country. In order to receive approval to deploy satellite services in India, operators have to get security clearances as well as approval from several ministries, according to the report.

Last year, the telco showed off its JioSpaceFiber technology at the India Mobile Congress. At the time the company said that it has already connected four remote locations across the country — Gir in Gujarat, Korba in Chattisgarh, Nabrangpur in Odisha, and ONGC-Jorhat in Assam — with its JioSpaceFiber satellite-based giga fibre Internet service.

In order to provide access to satellite-based Internet connectivity in India, Jio has partnered with Luxembourg-based satellite telecommunications network provider Société Européenne des Satellites (SES) for access to its medium earth orbit (MEO) satellites using SES’s O3b and new O3b mPOWER satellites.

Jio’s satcom services are expected to compete with Elon Musk-led Starlink, Eutelsat Group’s OneWeb, and Amazon’s Project Kuiper, firms that are also looking to launch their services in India. There’s no word from the company on plans to launch satellite Internet services in the country.

Starlink Set to Gain GMPCS Licence to Offer Satellite Communication Services in India: Report

Starlink — the global satellite Internet communication service operated by US space company SpaceX — is reportedly set to get the government’s approval to offer its services in the country. According to an ET Satcom report, the company is expected to be eligible to offer Internet access to individual customers and organisations in India, after completion of a security check. Starlink has reportedly agreed to abide by with the government’s requirement that the satcom firm comply with the country’s rules related to data storage.

According to the report citing a government official, Starlink will be granted a global mobile personal communication by satellite services (GMPCS) license after a security check is completed, as the answers given by the firm to the government’s queries were satisfactory. The company was asked to provide information related to its plans for data storage in the country as per existing norms.

Once Starlink is granted a GMPCS license, it will become the third company to be eligible to launch satcom services in the country. So far, the government has issued licenses to Jio for its     
JioSpaceFiber satellite Internet services, as well as Bharti-backed OneWeb.

However, companies wishing to start satellite Internet services in the country are also required to get approval from Indian National Space Promotion and Authorisation Centre (IN-SPACe), the space regulator that functions as a single-window agency for private and government players to seek permission for space projects.

A GMPCS license and IN-SPACe approval are required along with the allocation of spectrum by the government, in order to offer satellite services in India. Both JioSpaceFiber and OneWeb are looking to launch their services in the country, but doing so will need all three prerequisites.

Meanwhile, Amazon has sought regulatory approval from IN-SPACe in order to launch its satellite services in the country. The e-commerce giant is working towards setting up its Project Kuiper satellite network that aims to provide Internet access in areas that are not served by traditional service providers.

There’s no word from Starlink, Amazon, JioSpaceFiber and OneWeb on how much access to satellite Internet networks will cost in India. Pricing could also be influenced by the spectrum allocation process, which is mandatory before any of these operators offer their services in the country.

JioSpaceFiber Satellite-Based Giga Fibre Internet Service Demonstrated at India Mobile Congress

JioSpaceFiber was demonstrated on Friday at the 2023 India Mobile Congress as the country’s first satellite-based giga fibre Internet service. The mobile network service provider is working towards the launch of its satellite Internet services in India, to bring access to the Internet in areas that are not supported by traditional networks. JioSpaceFiber is expected to compete with rival service providers like Bharti Enterprises’ OneWeb, Amazon’s Project Kuiper, and Elon Musk’s Starlink, which are all looking to offer satellite internet services in the country.

Jio said it has already connected four remote locations across India with its JioSpaceFiber satellite-based giga fibre Internet service. The areas that have access to the new satellite service — presumably for testing purposes — are Gir in Gujarat, Korba in Chattisgarh, Nabrangpur in Odisha, and ONGC-Jorhat in Assam. The company has not yet provided a timeline for the launch of its services for customers in India, or how much it will cost.

According to the telecom provider the JioSpaceFiber satellite-based giga fibre Internet service will rely on Luxembourg-based satellite telecommunications network provider Société Européenne des Satellites (SES). The network’s medium earth orbit (MEO) satellites will provide gigabit-level Internet access using both SES’s O3b and new O3b mPOWER satellites.

“Jio has enabled millions of homes and businesses in India to experience broadband internet for the first time. With JioSpaceFiber, we expand our reach to cover the millions yet to be connected,” Reliance Jio Chairman Akash Ambani said in a prepared statement.

There’s no word from the company on when JioSpaceFiber will be launched in India, and the service will eventually compete with service providers like OneWeb (Bharti), Project Kuiper (Amazon), and Starlink (SpaceX). Jio will also benefit from being one of the first providers to bring fibre-grade Internet services to users in remote regions, adding to its existing 450 million customers is the country.

Amazon Seeks Regulatory Approval to Launch Project Kuiper Satellite Internet Services in India: Report

Amazon is reportedly working towards the launch of Project Kuiper, its satellite-based broadband internet services in India. The company has begun the process of applying for licenses from various government departments before it can provide broadband services in the country. Amazon’s Kuiper Systems will rely on a constellation of 3,236 satellites that are located in low Earth orbit (LEO) to provide access to low-latency and fast broadband services in an attempt to increase access to the Internet, including in rural areas.

The Economic Times reports that Amazon has applied to the Indian National Space Promotion and Authorisation Centre (IN-SPACe) in order to gain regulatory approval to launch satellite services in India. Project Kuiper will also require a global mobile personal communication by satellite services (GMPCS) license from the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) in order to provide satellite-based Internet services in the country.

Amazon will reportedly offer Internet access at speeds of up to 1Gbps, and the “affordable broadband” will be available across the country, including “unserved and underserved communities” and rural and remote places in India, as per the report.

According to the company’s website, Project Kuiper aims to provide Internet access via 3,236 LEO satellites — half of these are expected to be launched into space by 2026. The introduction of broadband Internet services in the country is also likely to help the company expand usage of its Amazon e-commerce platform and services like Prime Video.     

It is worth noting that Amazon is not the first company to attempt to launch its satellite Internet services in India. OneWeb and Jio Satellite have been granted a GMPCS license by the government, while Elon Musk-led Starlink — which has around 5,000 LEO satellites — is yet to receive approval. Gadgets 360 reported in January 2022 that Starlink offered refunds to customers who had “pre-ordered” satellite Internet services from the company.

There’s no word from Amazon on how much customers in India will have to pay to access the Internet via Project Kuiper. We can expect to hear more about pricing and availability, as well as system requirements for the satellite-based Internet connectivity service by the end of 2024, when the service is expected to be available to customers around the world.
