Nina Dobrev on the Complicated, Difficult Story of Sick Girl

Juggling the ebbs and flows of adult friendships is something Dobrev knows well. “People come into your life for a reason, a season, or a lifetime,” she says. For Dobrev, whose life and schedule are as busy and unpredictable as it gets, planning has always been key to cultivating deeper relationships. She’s great with a schedule and makes a point to pencil in time with friends when she’s in their area. FaceTime and social media have been a big help too. “I’m very lucky I have incredible friendships,” Dobrev says. “They are also very understanding of the fact that we’re not going to be the kind of friends who talk every single day about every single thing.”

Dobrev is nothing if not a realist, and she’s definitely not one to beat around the bush. It’s that directness that makes her such a great friend, actor, and producer and what also attracts her to like-minded creative folks such as Cram and stylist Kate Young. “I say how I feel, and I don’t sugarcoat too much, and that’s both my Achilles heel and one of my greatest assets,” she says. 

Young, like Dobrev, is straightforward and direct, and that kind of personality can come in handy when the right red carpet look is on the line. The A-list stylist, who also works with Dakota Johnson, Michelle Williams, and Julianne Moore, has been an ideal match for the actor, both in personality and fashion tastes. Dobrev can confidently say that her style has evolved dramatically since the two started working together. She cringes thinking back on some of her earlier red carpet looks. “I don’t know why nobody had an intervention with me,” she laughs. These days, the two have fun playing with a variety of styles and silhouettes, whether it’s a stunning gold sequin gown for the CFDA Fashion Awards, a leggy skirt-and-blazer combo by Nensi Dojaka, or an unexpected Chanel denim-on-denim look. Again, is there anything Dobrev can’t do? Young has been instrumental in creating a more elevated and chic vibe for Dobrev. “She’s the ultimate cool girl,” she says of Young. We can say the same about Dobrev.

My Aunt and I Went Shopping at J.Crew—42 Pieces We Both Love

I’ve said it before, but I’ll say it again: My aunt is one of my biggest style inspirations. In my 29 years as her niece, I’ve never seen her looking anything short of pulled-together and ultra-chic, so it should come as no surprise when I tell you that it’s basically her job to help people find their personal style. She went into fashion merchandising and has since worked in everything from personal styling to buying. Almost everyone in our family goes to her for style advice, myself included. And now that we both work in fashion, I’m constantly texting her about everything from the coolest new trends to the items I’m considering buying.

I sat down with her to chat about the best J.Crew shopping. The retailer has recently shot up to the top of my list of go-to stores, and I’ve found more and more reasons to shop its chic and elevated staples, but I wanted to get my aunt’s take on what to buy there now. Despite the nearly 30 years between us, we picked out many of the same J.Crew items, which proves how versatile and ageless these finds really are.

A Closer Look at Anna Diop’s Vibrant Gucci Premiere Look

For her first red carpet of 2024, Anna Diop came out with a bang in the form of a bejeweled tangerine minidress straight off Gucci’s S/S 24 runway. “I wanted to communicate effortlessness and chicness while also being in something that catches the eye,” Diop tells us following the event. Check, check, and check! The bold number was the epitome of joy and the perfect look to not only usher in an exciting new year on screen for the actor, but to more specifically celebrate The Book of Clarence, a film that is nothing short of a good time.

Directed by Jeymes Samuel (The Harder They Fall and The Great Gatsby), The Book of Clarence is an epic biblical comedy drama about a man struggling to make a better life for his family who risks it all to carve his own path to a divine life. The film most notably features an incredible ensemble of Black excellence consisting of Diop, LaKieth Stanfield, Alfre Woodard, Omary Sy, Nicholas Pinnock, and rising star Michael Ward. “It’s a film that does the near impossible in that it hits the comedy nail on the head, it hits the drama nail on the head, and it hits the action nail on the head,” Diop says. “I’m excited for people to come to the theater and really be entertained in the way film is meant to.”

Kylie Jenner Just Wore a Sheer Dress to the Golden Globes

One of the best things about the awards season is that there’s always sure to be something that takes you by surprise—e.g., one project could secure every single award or drama that ensues backstage (or sometimes onstage). But for Who What Wear editors, what always keeps us on our toes comes back to the moment when celebrities step onto the red carpet. We never know what people will wear, what trends will emerge, or what red carpet-looks will go viral. Sadly, though, in recent years, we’ve been in a bit of a dry spell when it comes to awards show style that, well, surprises. 

Don’t get us wrong, we will always love a pretty red carpet look, but there’s something to be said about those willing to take risks, especially when you’re dressing up for an event as formal as the Golden Globes! It seems that so many celebrities are worried about whether they’ll land on the “best dressed” list that they forget to enjoy the getting dressed up part. However, that wasn’t the case with one star this year: Kylie Jenner. While one might argue she wasn’t necessarily “fully dressed” (wait until you see her ultra-sheer lace gown), nonetheless, her presence was a welcome shift from the sea of cliché gowns. 

Many did not know Jenner would be in the audience at the Golden Globes since she did not walk the red carpet. However, she was there during the ceremony to support her beau, Timothée Chalamet, which quickly captured the attention of the internet. Although most of the buzz did surround the on-screen kiss they shared, we were more enthralled with their looks for the evening. Frankly, you won’t blame us once you see them for yourselves! Selena Gomez’s New Bodycare Line, Find Comfort, Is Live

Gomez chose to release a line of bodycare as an opportunity to showcase how important self-care is. “When you’re taking care of your body, mind, and soul, it’s all one,” Gomez said. “When you do take time to enjoy yourself and to find your little pockets and moments of peace, that’s something you should always be proud of.”

Find Comfort features four brand-new products: a body lotion, an aromatherapy pen, a fragrance mist, and a hand cream. Each product is packaged in purposefully made mauve vessels. Bella Hadid Wore the Non-Jeans Trend That’s Great For Travel

Stop what you’re doing and pay attention, because #BellaIsBack and it’s nothing to take lightly. Any loyal Bella Hadid fan will tell you that the supermodel has been steering clear of the public eye for quite some time now, so her being spotted in New York City outside of her sister Gigi’s NoHo apartment on Wednesday is kind of a big deal. No, actually, it’s a huge deal. And her impeccable—seriously, no notes—outfit for the occasion only emphasized the moment’s importance. 

For the rare sighting, Hadid chose a very ’90s, model-off-duty type of ensemble, opting for a trench coat, black turtleneck, and stretchy, black flared leggings (or as I like to refer to them, yoga pants). Accessorizing like a pro as always, she added a checker-print tote-style shoulder bag, F/W 99 Prada boots, and DMY by DMY wire-rim sunglasses. The look appeared effortless and therefore is bound to be copied all across TikTok. But honestly, it wasn’t her outfit as a whole that struck me when I first saw photos of it, but just her pants, which I couldn’t help but notice would be utterly perfect for flying.

Ed McVey Enters His Leading Man Era With The Crown

Welcome to Portrait Session, an intimate photo series and interview featuring some of our favorite people of the moment. 

After six seasons, The Crown is taking its final bow this month. Following the life of Queen Elizabeth II from her wedding in 1947 up until 2005, the award-winning Netflix historical drama has consistently given us spectacular performances from industry greats such as Olivia Coleman, Matt Smith, and Helena Bonham Carter, to name just a few, while also skyrocketing the careers of some noteworthy new faces (Claire Foy and Emma Corrin, anyone?). With part two of season six hitting the streamer today, we predict that kind of star-making power will unfold once again as the story focuses on the early courtship of Prince William and Kate Middleton at St. Andrews. Since season six casting news broke back in fall of 2022, fans have been eager to see newcomers Ed McVey and Meg Bellamy’s portrayal of the infamous royal couple. Plucked from obscurity, the actors stand to have a major breakout moment following their screen debut. So if they weren’t already on your radar, they should be now.

The first time I met McVey was during our photo shoot for this story at the Four Seasons Hotel in Beverly Hills. He was delightfully charming, cracking jokes in between poses for the camera. Clearly poised for a bright future. Our second meeting took place a few weeks later, albeit virtually. In that time, the actor’s schedule was jam-packed with premieres, junkets, and press appearances galore, but he didn’t appear phased. Part one of the final season came out in November, but since he’s not in those first episodes, he likens the experience to being on a roller coaster that is slowly making its way up the hill. The anticipation of what’s on the other side is there, but the rush hasn’t fully hit yet. McVey expects that will come later, after part two drops. “I’m sure when it does go out, it will be nuts, and I won’t be prepared for anything,” he said.

Hailey Bieber Already Wore the 2024 Trend We’re Betting On

Anyone who’s visited Hailey Bieber’s Instagram feed during Halloween knows that the model and entrepreneur loves a good holiday, especially when it means dressing to a theme. And now that we’ve entered into December territory, it appears that her outfits have switched over to another holiday. “Christmas glitter,” she captioned an IG slideshow on Sunday, showcasing one of the chicest festive looks of the year thus far. 

To celebrate the holiday season’s arrival, Bieber chose a long-sleeved minidress made of bone-colored satin from Khaite, which was paired with matching sparkly tights, a Prada top-handle bag, Balenciaga pumps, and a black velvet hair bow from Emi Jay. But while her accessories certainly finished off the look, her dress was no doubt the star of the show, especially given how on-trend satin is at the moment. After a buzzy showing on the spring/summer 2024 runways at Tory Burch, Altuzarra, Carven, Louis Vuitton, and more, the luxurious material was destined to become a major deal in the year ahead. Now that Bieber’s gone and stamped it with a Rhode Raspberry Jelly Peptide Lip Tinted kiss, any last doubts there were about the trend’s popularity in 2024 were squashed for good.

As you probably know, Skims is Kim Kardashian’s brand of shapewear. The line includes bodysuits, shorts, bras, bralettes, push-up bras, and more. The prices start at $18 and cap out at $98, and the sizes range from XXS to 5XL. Now that we have the basics out of the way, it’s time for the real test: What do real women think of it? Well, I got my hands on the items and tasked four of my co-workers with trying them out and reporting back with their thoughts. 

Before we get to our reviews, here’s how Skims describes the impetus behind the brand on its website: “Searching for the best shapewear and underwear over the years, Kim became frustrated with the lack of options available and couldn’t find anything that offered the right support, coverage or shade,” the site reads. “This led her to cut up and dye pieces at home, sewing them together to get the solutions and results she wanted.
