Jo Koy says he is ‘just supporting’ Taylor Swift following backlash over his Golden Globes 2024 joke

Jo Koy claimed he’s a Swiftie days after he made fun of Taylor Swift during the 2024 Golden Globes.

“I didn’t understand the Taylor [Swift] tiff,” he told the Los Angeles Times in an interview published Thursday.

“What hurts the most is me just supporting Taylor, I support her, I love her work. I got nieces that I bought tickets for. There’s no ill intent in that joke.”

During his opening monologue as a first-time host of the Golden Globes, the 52-year-old comedian made jabs at Swift, saying, “The big difference between the Golden Globes and the NFL? At the Golden Globes, we have fewer camera shots of Taylor Swift.”

However, when the joke fell flat, he quickly added, “Sorry about that.”

Despite apologizing, the 12-time Grammy winner wasn’t amused by the jab as she glared at him while sipping her drink.

During his interview with the LA Times, Koy specified that the statement was supposed to take a shot at the NFL and not her.

“It’s like, the cool thing about the [Golden] Globes is we don’t need to do cutaways for ratings,” he further explained.

Earlier in the week, he made a similar comment to “Entertainment Tonight,” saying that he thought the NFL cutaways of her at the games were “cute.”

Of course, Swift is well aware of the mixed reactions her appearances at NFL games have garnered as she supports her Kansas City Chiefs tight end beau Travis Kelce.

Despite her presence at Chiefs games bringing in an entirely new demographic of viewers, some NFL fans think her simply being there is too much and have even blamed her for causing the Chiefs to play horribly.

However, that is far from the truth, as she has statistically done the opposite.

The “Red” songstress addressed her screen time at NFL games during her 2023 Time Person of the Year profile, saying, “There’s a camera, like, a half-mile away, and you don’t know where it is, and you have no idea when the camera is putting you in the broadcast, so I don’t know if I’m being shown 17 times or once.”

She added, “I’m just there to support Travis.”

“I have no awareness of if I’m being shown too much and pissing off a few dads, Brads, and Chads.”

One of the best things about the awards season is that there’s always sure to be something that takes you by surprise—e.g., one project could secure every single award or drama that ensues backstage (or sometimes onstage). But for Who What Wear editors, what always keeps us on our toes comes back to the moment when celebrities step onto the red carpet. We never know what people will wear, what trends will emerge, or what red carpet-looks will go viral. Sadly, though, in recent years, we’ve been in a bit of a dry spell when it comes to awards show style that, well, surprises. 

Don’t get us wrong, we will always love a pretty red carpet look, but there’s something to be said about those willing to take risks, especially when you’re dressing up for an event as formal as the Golden Globes! It seems that so many celebrities are worried about whether they’ll land on the “best dressed” list that they forget to enjoy the getting dressed up part. However, that wasn’t the case with one star this year: Kylie Jenner. While one might argue she wasn’t necessarily “fully dressed” (wait until you see her ultra-sheer lace gown), nonetheless, her presence was a welcome shift from the sea of cliché gowns. 

Many did not know Jenner would be in the audience at the Golden Globes since she did not walk the red carpet. However, she was there during the ceremony to support her beau, Timothée Chalamet, which quickly captured the attention of the internet. Although most of the buzz did surround the on-screen kiss they shared, we were more enthralled with their looks for the evening. Frankly, you won’t blame us once you see them for yourselves! Regina Hall mocks Kevin Costner’s Golden Globes absence amid floods

Regina Hall couldn’t take Kevin Costner’s Golden Globes absence seriously.

As the actress revealed that the “Yellowstone” star was the winner of the 2023 Actor in a Drama Series award, she struggled to read off of the teleprompter with a straight face.

“Kevin Costner, he so much wanted to be —,” Hall, 52, began before laughing.

“I always like how they write this,” she told audience members. “It’s like, ‘He so much wanted to be — .’ No, I’m sure he did.

“But because of the — it’s been raining — the unprecedented weather and flooding, he has to shelter in place in Santa Barbara,” the “Girls Trip” star continued.

“Jesus!” Hall said, smacking her forehead.

She went on to admit it was “sad” that Costner, 67, was “stuck in Santa Barbara” with his family, trying to keep composure while asking viewers to “pray” for him.

“Everyone, we do, we pray and we hope everyone affected by these storms remains safe,” she added. “I’m gonna set that award right there, on your behalf, Kevin.”

Hours prior, Costner told his social media followers that “nobody [was] sadder” than him to miss Monday’s show.

“Yesterday, we had to pull the kids out of school, and in Santa Barbara, this is the second time in five years … the freeways flooded out,” the father-of-nine said in an Instagram video.

Costner, who filmed the footage with palm trees and the ocean in the background, added that he “couldn’t get back” home after finding himself on the “wrong side of town.”

The actor noted that his wife, Christine Baumgartner, had “a beautiful dress” picked out and he wished they could walk the red carpet together.

Baumgartner, 48, had purchased “some gold and yellow and black and silver balloons” so they could watch from home.

“I’m really sorry to the Golden Globes and the international press,” he concluded. “I hope we’re invited back. Thanks.”

Fans troll Austin Butler for Elvis voice in Golden Globes 2023 speech

Austin Butler dipped into his Elvis Presley voice while accepting a Golden Globe for his portrayal of the late King of Rock at Tuesday night’s awards ceremony — and fans found it awkward. 

“Oh man, all my words are leaving me. I just am so grateful right now. I’m in this room full of my heroes. Brad [Pitt], I love you. Quentin [Tarantino], I printed out the ‘Pulp Fiction’ script when I was 12. I cannot believe I’m here right now,” the 31-year-old began, invoking Presley’s signature twang. 

The Disney Channel alum won the award for “Best Actor in a Motion Picture Drama” for his leading role in director Baz Luhrmann’s critically acclaimed “Elvis” biopic. 

While in character, Butler — who hails from Southern California — went on to address Presley’s widow, Priscilla Presley, and daughter, Lisa Marie Presley, who were in the audience at Los Angeles’ Beverly Hilton hotel.

“The Presley family, thank you guys for opening your hearts, your memories, your home to me,” he told the Tennessee natives. “Lisa Marie and Priscilla, I love you forever.”

Butler’s spot-on impersonation did not seem to bother Priscilla, 77, nor Lisa Marie, 54, who both appeared visibly emotional throughout the oration. (They lost Elvis in 1977 when he died of a heart attack at age 42.)

Although Elvis’ loved ones seemed to appreciate Butler’s delivery, viewers at home were largely unnerved. 

“Austin Butler taking ‘method acting’ WAY further than it needs to with this voice in his acceptance speech. #GoldenGlobes,” one wrote via Twitter.

One more individual joked, “if Austin Butler can stick with his Elvis voice then Julia Garner should stick with her Anna Delvey voice.”

During a June 2022 interview with “Entertainment Tonight,” Butler explained that it is difficult for him to shake Elvis’ dialect after transforming into the late icon onscreen. 

“At this point, I keep asking people, ‘Is this my voice?’ because this feels like my real [voice],” he told the outlet at the time.
