Cyberpunk 2077 Live-Action Adaptation in the Works, CD Projekt Red Confirmed

Cyberpunk 2077 is getting a live-action adaptation, developer CD Projekt Red has announced. The project is being developed in collaboration with Anonymous Content, the independent media company best known for producing Emmy-winning shows like True Detective and Mr. Robot. It’s unclear if this take will be a feature-length film or a TV series, but the hunt for a screenwriter has commenced, with plans to tell a brand-new story set in the futuristic neon-lit world, where sex, body modifications, and political chatter are commonplace. The developer also stressed that the adaptation is at an ‘early developmental stage,’ so it’ll be a while before we receive any further updates.

CD Projekt Red previously dabbled in such passive media by simply using the setting to chart an underdog tale via the Netflix anime Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, which gained critical acclaim and gave the once-tarnished video game a new lease on life. Cyberpunk 2077 suffered a rocky launch period, plagued with game-breaking bugs and crashes, to the point where Sony delisted it from the PS4 digital storefronts. The title has since seen several improvements, thanks to the countless hotfixes and patches, alongside fresh content. An update 2.0 dropped last month, which overhauled the perk system and limited tech augmentations. That was followed by the Phantom Liberty expansion, that put players on a high-stakes espionage mission with a secret agent played by Idris Elba. Keanu Reeves was another contributor to its Hollywood star-power in the main game.

For the live-action adaptation, CD Projekt Red is working directly with Anonymous Content’s Head of Television Garret Kemble, Director of Development Ryan Schwartz, and CCO David Levine. The last of them was involved in producing West World, the aforementioned True Detective, and even a few early Game of Thrones seasons. The studio, as a whole, has some impressive projects under its belt, with two Academy Award-winning films: The Revenant and Spotlight. It’s not like CD Projekt Red is a stranger to live-action adaptations either, since the Henry Cavill-led The Witcher series instantly soared to popularity, and has now been renewed for a fourth season — albeit, with Liam Hemsworth (The Hunger Games movies) taking over.

CDPR dropped a ton of updates at its Investor Day presentation, held late Thursday, confirming that Cyberpunk 2077 has sold over 25 million copies worldwide. Meanwhile, its Phantom Liberty expansion, which has only been out for 10 days, has already sold 3 million copies. Furthermore, the company CEO Adam Kiciński revealed his plans to step down from the position, as part of a managemental shake-up. He will instead serve in a more supervisory role, starting January 1, 2024, as Chief Strategy Officer, leaving the CEO position vacant for Adam Badowski and Michał Nowakowski to jointly take over.

Cyberpunk 2077 and its Phantom Liberty expansion are out now on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series S/X.

Netflix Is Reportedly Planning a Price Hike After the Ongoing Hollywood Actors’ Strike Ends

Netflix is reportedly planning to raise its subscription prices once the ongoing Hollywood actors’ strikes end. As per The Wall Street Journal, the streamer will issue a hike on its ad-free plans a few months before a global spread, starting with the US and Canada. The company hasn’t commented on the said increase, but going by the last instance, which was in January 2022, we can expect it to go up by $1 to $2 (about Rs. 83 to Rs. 166) for a monthly plan. Before that, Netflix also introduced its cheaper ad-supported plan, costing $6.99 (about Rs. 582), which is still unavailable in India.

While other international streaming platforms such as Max and Disney+ raised their prices to curb financial losses, Netflix instead chose to boost its subscription count by cracking down on password sharing among its customers. The method seems to have worked, considering the streamer reported a climb of 6 million new subscribers, as of July, taking the total to 238 million members. The WSJ report suggests that costs of major streaming platforms have shot up by 25 percent, as a means to make a profit and lead more price-conscious customers to their low-cost ad-supported plans. It’s not surprising for the company to try and match the price pools set by its competitors, with the leading one in the US being Disney+ at $13.99 (about Rs. 1,165). Raising the cost of ad-free tiers also makes the cheaper ad-supported plans look more appealing.

It’s unclear exactly when the new prices will be issued, but currently, the ad-free Standard tier costs $15.49 (about Rs. 1,289) per month in the US, while the Premium plan is set at $19.99 (about Rs. 1,664) monthly, allowing you to stream content at up to four screens at the same time.

Last week, the Writers’ Guild of America (WGA) finally ended its 148-day strike against major Hollywood studios, in an effort to earn fair paychecks and to fight back against unregulated use of AI in screenwriting. Among those studios were the aforementioned Netflix and other major streaming services, all of which will now be forced to share streaming data with the WGA — specifically, the hours streamed — so writers and actors can assess how well a movie or show performed and collect residuals on them. It’s similar to TV broadcasts, but the advent of online streaming made it so workers weren’t making any additional money beyond the initial payment. Meanwhile, the SAG-AFTRA (actors’ union) is still on strike and trying to negotiate a fair deal with the AMPTP (Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers).

In April, Netflix CEO Ted Sarandos claimed that the streamer was ‘better prepared than most‘ studios in the event that a strike went through. Keeping disruptions to the minimum was its large slate of content, thanks to its penchant for planning out releases long before they’re ever revealed to the public. It makes sense for Netflix to wait until the strikes end so they can raise their prices, given there’s not much promise of new content besides the ones they’ve already shown throughout their TUDUM events.

However, as actors and writers return to work, not only can they justify the price hike, but they will finally be able to promote the films and hold interviews like they used to. For the uninitiated, actors under the SAG-AFTRA union aren’t allowed to promote their films or shows nor work on them during the strike period, which has caused several major projects like Dune: Part 2 and Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse to get delayed.

Oppenheimer Won’t Release on VOD Until Late November, Producer Confirms

Oppenheimer won’t release on digital or streaming until late November, at the earliest. Speaking to the Associated Press, producer Emma Thomas confirmed that the biopic will continue playing in theatres due to its strong demand, which still draws large crowds into the cinemas. This is far longer than the industry standard of pushing films into home video 45 days after their theatrical debut. Considering its Paris premiere on July 11, by the time we reach November, Oppenheimer would’ve played in theatres for 16 weeks/ 112 days. Its pink-tinted companion Barbie, however, is already available to stream as video-on-demand, arriving 54 days after its global theatrical release.

Clearly, those who were planning a double-feature watch party at home will have a wait a little longer. The internet-born ‘Barbenheimer‘ event will forever be etched into film history as the day when two blockbuster films with juxtaposing themes vied for dominance when they both released on July 21. While Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer served as a stark biopic on J. Robert Oppenheimer, the father of the atomic bomb, Greta Gerwig brought Barbie to life, with candy-coated feminist tale centred on Mattel’s popular fashion doll. Despite being billed as rivals, both films contributed to each other’s success and now top the global box office charts of 2023. Oppenheimer currently ranks third amongst the biggest movies of the year, having collected $913.1 million (about Rs. 7,586) at the global box office. There’s a good chance that Universal Pictures extended the theatrical run hoping that it would help nudge the film into the billion-dollar club. That’s where Barbie and The Super Mario Bros. Movie are vibing.

“We’ve been incredibly lucky in our careers. We’ve had some really great moments before. We’ve had some very successful films that have allowed us to continue making films,” producer Thomas said in the interview. “But I would argue that this one is the most successful when you look at what the film was and then how it’s played out.” Internationally, audiences have been experiencing Oppenheimer the way Nolan intended — on 70mm IMAX. As such, she suggested that after nine weeks of continued use, the film prints would need to be rested, with those in good condition being saved for re-releases in the future.

Oppenheimer explores the politics and drama surrounding the creation of the first atomic bomb, through the eyes of the renowned theoretical physicist J. Robert Oppenheimer (Cillian Murphy). Set in an isolated community in Los Alamos, the Harvard graduate muses about war and obsessively navigates the Manhattan Project amidst World War II, all the way up to the Trinity Test. It is worth noting that when Oppenheimer does eventually make it to digital, one shouldn’t expect any extra scenes since nothing’s been cut from the movie. The film should then roll out onto streaming services, dropping on JioCinema in India due to its newly-forged partnership with NBCUniversal. Internationally audiences should be able to stream it on Peacock.

Dune: Part Two Release Date Delayed to 2024 Due to Hollywood Actors’ Strike

Dune: Part Two has been delayed to next year, due to the ongoing actors’ strike in Hollywood. After much consideration, the highly-anticipated sci-fi sequel starring Timothée Chalamet and Zendaya has been moved from its initial November 3 slot to March 15, 2024. The realignment from Warner Bros. and Legendary has also caused them to push back Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire — the latest in the Monsterverse franchise — by nearly one month, going from March 15 to April 12, 2024. The Dune sequel will get an IMAX release as well, with an earlier report noting that supported screens would be hosting the film for an extended run of up to six weeks.

Denis Villeneuve’s Dune: Part 2 has turned out to be the biggest casualty of the SAG-AFTRA strikes since its star-studded cast — boasting the likes of Chalamet, Zendaya, Florence Pugh, and Rebecca Ferguson — would be barred from serving any promotional duties or interviews for the film. The lack of actors — or potential nominees — would have proven challenging for the awards campaign as well, which is why the Emmy Awards have been delayed as well. The first Dune movie snagged six trophies at the Oscars and emerged as one of the biggest movies during the pandemic, grossing $402 million (about Rs. 3,323 crore) at the global box office. Given it has the potential to build out a franchise akin to Star Wars, it makes sense for WB and Legendary to hold out on its release.

However, by shifting the release date to March 15, Warner Bros. has put itself in a difficult position, as it sabotages another major release from the company. Oscar-winning filmmaker Bong Joon-ho’s Mickey 17 starring Robert Pattinson is currently slated to hit theatres merely two weeks later, on March 29, 2024. This could negatively affect both of their box office numbers, as Parasite’s Oscar sweep in 2019 is bound to bring more eyes to Bong’s films now. Maybe we could see a repeat of the ‘Barbenheimer‘ magic, but I wouldn’t be surprised if this film gets delayed as well.

Reports from last month suggested that Warner Bros. was considering shaking up its December release calendar due to the strike. However, the company has chosen to stick to those dates, regardless of the strike. So, another Chalamet-led film Wonka is out December 15, DC Comics’ Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom drops December 20, and The Color Purple releases Christmas Day in theatres. As per The Hollywood Reporter’s sources, WB is still committed to theatrical releases, even amidst the uncertainty of the Hollywood dual strikes organised by the WGA (The Writer’s Guild of America) and the aforementioned actors’ union.

Dune 2 picks up right where the first chapter ended, with Paul Atreides (Chalamet), Chani (Zendaya), and the Fremen soldiers uniting on a warpath of revenge against the Harkonnen lineage, the conspirators who killed Paul’s family. The sequel brings in some new faces such as Austin Butler as the cruel Feyd-Rautha, Pugh as Princess Irulan, Christopher Walken as Emperor Shaddam IV, and Léa Seydoux as the Bene Gesserit Lady Margot.

Dune: Part Two is now slated to release March 15, 2024 in theatres worldwide.

Oppenheimer Breaks Rs. 150-Crore Mark at the Indian Box Office

In its fourth week, Oppenheimer continues to dominate the Indian box office, crossing the Rs. 150 crore mark. The country remains the biggest market where the Christopher Nolan film has outgrossed its competition Barbie, which recently joined the billion-dollar club in worldwide returns. There are no official numbers available for Barbie’s financial returns in India, but the last recorded value is Rs. 32.75 crore, from earlier this month. With these figures, Oppenheimer is currently the sixth highest-grossing film of the year, sitting right behind Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, which recently released on digital. Barbie, on the other hand, sits comfortably at the second position, having bested Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 and slowly headed on a path to overthrow The Super Mario Bros. Movie. Oppenheimer debuted exceptionally well in India, selling 1.7 million tickets through BookMyShow, during the opening weekend, with most audiences opting to watch in IMAX — just the way Nolan intended for the biopic to be viewed. Despite being R-rated, the film turned over a profit in India, while Barbie trailed further behind, partly due to not receiving a Hindi-language dub.

Oppenheimer has now become Nolan’s fifth-highest-grossing film, beating his other World War II movie Dunkirk, which made $525 million (about Rs. 4,362 crore) globally. The ‘Barbenheimer‘ craze significantly contributed to its success, in turn helping PVR Inox turn in a profit in an otherwise struggling region, where Hindi-language movies continued to disappoint — both critically and commercially. The Tom Cruise-led Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One was another major IMAX hit in July, showing a demand for Hollywood movies in the country. In fact, PVR Inox just launched India’s first standalone IMAX experience at Delhi’s Priya Cinema — a 316-seater theatre with a single IMAX screen that is dedicated to the said large-scale format.

On track to finish as Nolan’s biggest non-Batman movie, Oppenheimer marks his first film with Universal Pictures since severing ties with longtime partner Warner Bros. However, it was recently reported that WB was looking to make amends with the filmmaker, with the latter even receiving a seven-figure royalty cheque for his work on the time-bending espionage film Tenet, which was released in theatres amidst the pandemic. Nolan allegedly did some post-production work on Oppenheimer at the WB lot as well, raising suspicions of a mended relationship between the two parties.

Wonder Woman 3 Reportedly Not in Development at DC Studios, Despite Gal Gadot’s Claims

Wonder Woman 3 is reportedly not in development, despite actor Gal Gadot’s comments from earlier this week. As per Variety’s sources, new DC Studios co-heads James Gunn and Peter Safran don’t have any plans for a Wonder Woman project, besides the Paradise Lost prequel series that was announced for Max (previously HBO Max), as part of its revamped DC Universe slate. Word about a threequel spread like wildfire when Gadot claimed in a pre-SAG-AFTRA strike interview that the aforementioned parties had privately confirmed the film’s development to her.

That statement was then emphasised in a profile she did for Flaunt magazine, promoting her newly released Netflix film Heart of Stone. “I was invited to a meeting with James Gunn and Peter Safran and what they told me, and I’m quoting: ‘You’re in the best hands. We’re going to develop Wonder Woman 3 with you. [We] love you as Wonder Woman — you’ve got nothing to worry about.’ So time will tell,” she said. The Variety report, however, claims that nothing of the sort was promised to Gadot and even so, there was no definitive discussion of whether she would be reprising her role in the new DCU. Gadot first appeared as the Amazonian princess in Zack Snyder’s Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, before branching off into two standalone Wonder Woman films. She also had a cameo in The Flash, but that movie was a reset point for the universe. Also, they were made before Gunn and Safran joined the studio.

Both Wonder Woman and Wonder Woman 1984 were helmed by Patty Jenkins, who back in December, submitted a screenplay for a third untitled movie, co-written with Geoff Johns (Suicide Squad). However, the character’s vision/ treatment did not align with the vision Gunn and Safran had planned for the overhaul and therefore, got cancelled. That report, too, broke after Gadot had made positive claims on her Twitter handle, about her return with a third film. While production costs weren’t a concern for Warner Bros. at the time, they could end up saving ‘tens of millions of dollars’ by straight-up cancelling Wonder Woman 3.

Even the DC Comics presentation in January from Gunn did not mention another Wonder Woman film, instead announcing a Paradise Lost series that would serve as an origins story for the mysterious locale inhabited and governed by Amazonian women. The show will focus on the drama and political intrigue behind the society to explore its rules and the lore behind the banishment of all men from the island nation of Themyscira. “It’s almost like Game of Thrones with Westeros, but with all of the inhabitants of Paradise Island,” Gunn described, at the time.

Emmy Awards 2023 Delayed to January Due to Hollywood Actors and Writers Strikes

Emmy Awards 2023 have been officially delayed to next year. After months of dialogue between the Television Academy and new broadcaster Fox, the 75th Primetime Emmy Awards will now be held on January 16 at 6:30am IST in India/ January 15 at 5pm PT in the US. This marks the first time in two decades that the Emmys are being postponed — the first being in 2001, after the September 11 attacks. This latest delay is owing to the ongoing actors’ and writers’ strikes in Hollywood, which have halted several major film and TV productions. Nominees were revealed back in July, with Succession leading the pack, and a host will be decided upon once the strikes end.

Without the actors/ nominees, the awards show would look rather empty, and with no writers pulling the strings in the background with a proper script or jokes, the show was headed with no vision. As per The Hollywood Reporter, there was a scenario in which the show would’ve been telecasted without writers, but the lack of star power caused the delay unavoidable. You see, members of SAG-AFTRA (Hollywood actors union) are not allowed to star in or promote any film or TV projects they’re in, in addition to accepting awards for struck work until the union meets a fair agreement with major studios. It’s also the reason why several big-budget movies — boasting starry cast lineups — are getting delayed.

The 2023 Emmys were originally slated for September and now see a nearly four-month delay, during which the studios hope the strikes will subside. However, the new date also places it in an already busy awards season. As usual, the telecast also includes the Creative Emmys, which rewards excellence in technical elements in television and some other minor acts — a two-night event scheduled for January 6 and January 7. However, the second night coincides with the Golden Globe 2024 event, which celebrates both movies and TV series, essentially dampening the achievements of the already underappreciated creative department. What I’m trying to say is that all eyes would be on the bigger awards show.

Not to mention, there’s also the 2024 Critics Choice Awards on January 14 (Jan 15 for India), which falls exactly a day before the newly-set date for the Primetime Emmy Awards. So, these are back-to-back awards shows, with the former featuring television alongside film categories. For now, the other award broadcasters aren’t confirmed to be shuffling dates around. As noted before, the Emmy nominees have already been decided and the final voting timeline for Academy members stays the same — August 17–28. Even SAG-AFTRA and the DGA (Directors Guild of America) have their award ceremonies set for the month of February, in the run-up to the Oscars season.

It’s not clear whether the writers’ and actors’ union will be able to reach a fair agreement by January since a Deadline report from July revealed the statement made by an unnamed executive. “The endgame is to allow things to drag on until union members start losing their apartments and losing their houses,” they said. Another person deemed it a ‘cruel but necessary evil.’

The 75th annual Emmys are set to stream live from the Peacock Theater, Los Angeles, on early Tuesday, January 16 at 6:30am IST/ January 15 at 5pm PT in the US. In India, it will be available to stream on Lionsgate Play.

PVR Inox Launches Standalone IMAX Experience at Delhi’s Priya Cinema

PVR Inox, India’s biggest theatre chain, has launched the only standalone IMAX property in the country. The company has converted Delhi’s age-old Priya Cinema, located at Basant Lok Complex, Vasant Vihar, into a ‘state-of-the-art’ experience, equipped with IMAX Laser projection for large-scale viewing. While other IMAX theatres in the country house regular theatre formats and projections alongside, this marks the first time an entire cinema is dedicated to IMAX screenings. As one of the oldest PVR properties, it features a single-screen with a 316-seater setup, with ticket prices ranging anywhere from Rs. 400 to Rs. 1,000 depending on what show you opt for.

“We are extremely pleased to upgrade our first and most iconic cinema, PVR Priya into a modern-day representation of a truly immersive cinematic experience like IMAX,” Ajay Bijli, Managing Director, PVR INOX Ltd. said in a prepared statement. “Non-Hindi Indian movies and Hollywood movies have indeed broken the thresholds of geographical and language barriers being dubbed in multiple languages aided by their larger than life appeal and immersive formats such as IMAX has helped in expanding the movie viewing market.” This is, of course, referring to the recent ‘Barbenheimer‘ movie event, which turned a profit for Indian cinemas struggling to keep up with streaming. The company’s revenue saw a big bump in July, which came blasting in with three major Hollywood blockbusters — Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One, Barbie, and Oppenheimer.

Imax and Laser Projection Cost More, but It’s Worth It for the Theatre Experience

The last of them led the Indian market, breaking past the 100-crore mark at the box office, with many visiting IMAX theatres to experience it the way ‘Christopher Nolan intended it.’ Even the Tom Cruise-led action affair received similar IMAX treatment and at the time of writing, they’re both currently playing at Priya Cinema, Delhi. That said, in order to keep the business running, PVR Inox needs to have IMAX format movies available to show at regular intervals, which is seemingly difficult with the ongoing Hollywood actors’ and writers’ strike that has halted major productions. Even Dune: Part 2, which was slated for release in November — with IMAX as a focus — might get delayed into 2024, as its starry cast would be unable to promote or do any interviews for the film.

So, unless more local, Indian productions step in to shoot in IMAX — during the Hollywood downtime — Priya Cinemas will be forced to show non-IMAX films, which technically goes against its advertising. PVR Inox Managing Director Bijli even confirmed the same in a recent interview — there’s bound to be a lot of that unless Hollywood studios and the actors and writers’ unions come to a fair agreement. Shooting on standard 2K cameras is way cheaper, which is why most Indian productions opt for it. “India is fast emerging as one of the most exciting global cinema markets thanks to its passionate audiences and their love for Indian and Hollywood filmmaking alike, and we are pleased to further partner with PVR INOX to meet surging demand for The IMAX Experience,” Rich Gelfond, CEO, IMAX said in a press release.

Once the ‘Barbenheimer’ craze is over, cinemas around the world will suffer a similar situation as the pandemic era, which caused moviegoers to stay at home. Fearing the worst, most major productions have shifted their release dates, with Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse being a key player, as its actors cannot do any voiceover work during the strike. Meanwhile, Kraven the Hunter, which was slated to drop in October, has been postponed to August 2024.

Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse Is Now Available to Watch On-Demand on YouTube, Apple TV, Zee5, More

Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse is now available to stream as video-on-demand. The second chapter in fledgling Miles Morales’ multiversal escapades is now available for renting and purchase across Apple TV, Youtube Movies, Amazon Prime Video, and Zee5. Out of these, only Apple TV offers the premium Ultra HD version with Dolby Atmos audio, albeit there’s only the option for purchase at Rs. 490. An SD (standard definition) version is also available at Rs. 390, and both of them come with subtitles in several languages. On YouTube Movies, the film starts at Rs. 590 for the SD version and Rs. 820 for the 1080p full-HD print — neither platform has options to rent.

Renting Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse is only possible on Amazon Prime Video and Zee5, though pricing on the former is a bit strange. Both SD and HD versions are listed for Rs. 399, which doesn’t make too much sense, as the customer would rather opt for higher quality — provided they have the internet bandwidth to support it, that is. Meanwhile, the version on Zee5 doesn’t mention what version you’ll get, but seeing the Rs. 349 price tag and its targeted audience being Indians (regional pricing), I’m inclined to believe that it will be HD quality. The platform also offers audio in 10 regional languages — same as theatrical — ranging between English, Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Marathi, Malayalam, Bengali, Kannada, Punjabi, and Gujarati.

Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse dominated the box office, collecting $683.8 million (about Rs. 56,62 crore) globally and setting a milestone as the highest-grossing Sony Pictures Animation film. If the numbers and reviews aren’t convincing enough, IGN has exclusively dropped the first 10 minutes of the film, which should give you a general vibe of the film. In it, Miles Morales (Shameik Moore), now reunited with Gwen Stacy (Hailee Steinfeld), is catapulted across the multiverse and trapped amongst an interdimensional web of Spider-People to solve a major conspiracy. When leader Miguel O’Hara/ Spider-Man 2099 (Oscar Isaac) comes up with a dangerous choice to save the multiverse, Miles rejects it, spawning an all-out war in which he leaps across dimensions, getting mauled by a Spider-Cat and more.

The Spot (Jason Schwartzman) appears to be the mysterious force behind the multiverse’s doom, thanks to his special abilities that let him open and travel across portals. Other key players include Daniel Kaluuya as Spider-Punk, Issa Rae as Jessica Drew/ Spider-Woman, and Jake Johnson as the original Spider-Man/ Peter Parker. Meanwhile, Karan Soni voices Pavitr Prabhakar/ Spider-Man India, whose universe Mumbattan is presented through a watercolour style mimicking old Indian comic books. There’s a total of six main art styles in the film, in addition to the wacky doodle sketches that add a ton more personality.

Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse is now available as VOD on YouTube Movies, Apple TV, Amazon Prime Video, and Zee5. It’s also still playing in select theatres across the country.

Oppenheimer Breaks Rs. 100-Crore Mark, Becoming Highest-Grossing IMAX Film from Hollywood in India

Oppenheimer has finally broken the 100-crore mark at the Indian box office, becoming the highest-grossing IMAX film from Hollywood in India. Having completed nearly two weeks in theatres, the film has comprehensively outsold Barbie in terms of ticket sales, with the latter having reportedly collected Rs. 32.75 crore. The tables are turned on the global scale, however, with the Christopher Nolan film having earned $412.4 million (about Rs. 3,406 crore), while Barbie is on track to cross the $800-million (about Rs. 6,606 crore) mark. It currently sits right behind Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 as the third-highest-grossing film of the year.

Meanwhile, Oppenheimer sits comfortably in the 11th position, having grossed $181.4 million (about Rs. 1,498 crore) within the US and Canada, and pooling in another $231 million (about Rs. 1,908 crore). In India especially, the film debuted exceptionally well, selling 1.7 million tickets via BookMyShow, during the three-day opening weekend. In fact, the ‘Barbenheimer‘ event as a whole has been beneficial for Indian cinemas, where Hindi-language films have been struggling to dominate. PVR Inox — the biggest movie theatre chain in the country — saw a big jump in revenue as July came in blasting with three big blockbusters — Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One, Barbie, and Oppenheimer.

It’s also worth noting that in India, Oppenheimer was released in both English and Hindi, thereby catering to a larger audience, while Barbie featured no additional language dubs. Of course, the biggest contributor to both film’s success has to be the internet memes that poked fun at the contrasting themes and fan-made merchandise. The aforementioned figures have placed Oppenheimer as the sixth highest-grossing film from Nolan, having beat Batman Begins, which benefitted from some re-releases to reach $373.6 million (about Rs. 3,088 crore). Considering that the film was also R-rated for nudity and language — the filmmaker’s first in nearly two decades — this marks a significant achievement, especially when its actors couldn’t properly promote the film due to the SAG-AFTRA strikes.

The success of both films is good for keeping the theatre business running, but there’s bound to be a drop in performance thanks to the ongoing actors’ and writers’ strikes in Hollywood. With both film and TV productions now at a standstill, for cinema operators, this emulates the same feeling as the pandemic era that caused moviegoers to stay at home. Fearing the worst, even movie studios have begun delaying major releases into the next year. Earlier this week, Sony Pictures delayed Kraven the Hunter by 11 months, going from October 6 to August 11, 2024. Meanwhile, Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse’s actors cannot do any voiceover acting during the strike, which caused the studio to remove its initial March 2024 date. Even Warner Bros. has been reportedly considering moving Dune: Part Two, as its star cast will be unable to do any promotional work.

Both Oppenheimer and Barbie are currently playing in theatres worldwide.
