Oscars 2024 Full List of Nominations: Oppenheimer Leads with 13 Nods

The Oscars 2024 nominees have been announced, with Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer leading as expected, bagging 13 nods. The biographical film about the life of American physicist J. Robert Oppenheimer and the birth of the atomic bomb has already won five Golden Globes and eight Critics Choice awards. The Cillian Murphy starrer is shortly followed by Emma Stone’s science fiction fantasy Poor Things and Leonardo DiCaprio’s historical crime drama Killers of the Flower Moon, which have been nominated in 11 and 10 categories, respectively.

However, Barbie surprisingly dropped from the highest number of nominations in Critics Choice Awards to just eight nods for Oscars. Although the “Barbenheimer” pop-culture sensation is still leading the pack with a total of 21 nominations.

With the nominations for Best Sound and Best Visual Effects for Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One and Best Visual Effects for Godzilla Minus One, the Godzilla and Mission: Impossible film franchises have finally made it to the Oscar nominations for the first time in history. Killer of the Flower Moon’s Lily Gladstone, too, hit a new milestone, becoming the first indigenous actress of American descent to be nominated for an Academy Award.

Speaking of records, Martin Scorsese hit two of them, with most Oscar nominations in Best Director category for any living filmmaker and the oldest one nominated for the same.

While last year India made history by winning the Best Original Song Oscar for the energetic Naatu Nattu from RRR, there are no contenders from the South Asian country this time.

However, a documentary called To Killer a Tiger, based on a gangrape case in Jharkhand – directed by India-born Canadian filmmaker Nisha Pahuja – has been nominated in the Best Documentary Feature Film category.

Other films that garnered nominations include Bradley Cooper’s Maestro, American Fiction, Anatomy of a Fall, The Holdovers, The Zone of Interest, and Napoleon.

Golden Globe Winners 2024: The Full List, From Oppenheimer to Succession

The 2024 Golden Globes were held earlier on Sunday night in Los Angeles, honouring the best talent in the film and television industry from the past year. Oppenheimer reigned supreme at the ceremony, bagging five awards, including the Best Motion Picture Drama trophy. Its helmer Christopher Nolan was crowned Best Director in the same category, while lead Cillian Murphy and co-star Robert Downey Jr. took home the acting prizes. Meanwhile, Yorgos Lanthimos’ absurd Frankenstein-inspired film Poor Things won the award for Best Picture – Musical or Comedy, with its star Emma Stone snagging the Best Actress accolade.

Another major film this year was Greta Gerwig’s Barbie, which secured two trophies — one for the ‘What Was I Made For?’ song by Billie Eilish and Finneas, while the other was for its box office accomplishment. This year, the show added a ‘Cinematic and Box Office Achievement’ category to recognise the biggest movies of the year; ones that grossed at least $150 million, of which $100 million must be from within the US. In addition to the critical performance, Barbie has totally outperformed expectations for Warner Bros., having made $1.442 billion (about Rs. 11,979 crore) at the global box office.

Elsewhere, Lily Gladstone, a first-time Golden Globe nominee, emerged as the best female actor in a drama for her performance in Killers of the Flower Moon, marking the only award for the film from seven nominations. As expected, Anatomy of a Fall netted an honour for the best non-English language film, with its co-writers Justine Triet and Arthur Harari adding to the tally with the best screenplay award. Hayao Miyazaki’s final film before retirement, The Boy and the Heron, also came out on top as the Best Animated Picture at the 81st Golden Globes.

From Barbie to Killers of the Flower Moon: The Best Movies of 2023

On the TV side, the fourth and final season of Succession was crowned Best Drama Series, in addition to leading the pack of winners with four trophies in total. Kieran Culkin and Sarah Snook won Best Actor and Best Actress respectively, for portraying the cunning children looking to inherit their father’s empire and possibly prevent it from getting acquired by a billionaire techie. Matthew Macfayden, who played the crafty Tom Wambsgans in the show, was awarded Best Supporting Actor. Other highlights include The Bear season 2 dominating in the musical/ comedy category with awards for best TV series, best actor (Jeremy Allan White), and best actress (Ayo Edeberi). HBO’s The Last of Us series, which was the talk of the town when it premiered in early 2023, didn’t win a single Golden Globe but grabbed eight wins at the Creative Arts Emmy Awards.

Oscars 2024 Shortlist Revealed for 10 Categories: Barbie Leads With Five Mentions

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has unveiled shortlists in 10 categories for the upcoming Oscars 2024 ceremony. Among those, Greta Gerwig’s candy-coated romp Barbie leads with five mentions, largely dominating in the Best Original Song section with three entries alone. Dua Lipa’s party song ‘Dance the Night,’ Billie Eilish’s ‘What Was I Made For?,’ and the super-catchy and sentimental ‘I’m Just Ken’ from star Ryan Gosling and writer-composer Mark Ronson made it to the list. Surprisingly, the film failed to secure placements in the makeup and hairstyling department, with absurd choices like Beau Is Afraid, Ferrari, and Oppenheimer making the cut.

Oddly, the Christopher Nolan film, which emulated an atomic bomb explosion through practical means, didn’t earn a place amongst the Best Visual Effects consideration for the year. It has instead secured nods in the audio department for Best Original Score — composed by Ludwig Göransson — and for the best use of sound design, for which it competes against David Fincher’s The Killer, Michael Mann’s Ferrari, Martin Scorsese’s Killers of the Flower Moon, and more. The last of them has nabbed four spots in the Oscars 2024 shortlist, with ‘Wahzhazhe (A Song For My People)’, performed by the Osage tribe, contesting to be named among the final nominees for Best Original Song, come March 10, 2024.

Unlike last year, no entries from India were considered for the Oscars 2024 shortlist — the Jude Anthany Joseph-directed Malayalam-language disaster feature, 2018: Everyone is a Hero, was India’s submission for consideration this year, but it failed to make the cut for Best International Feature Film. Movies from 88 countries and regions were eligible for the foreign language shortlist, after meeting a “minimum viewing requirement” to be eligible to vote. When the nominees are finalised, Academy members will be required to watch all 15 shortlisted films, before deciding what to send forward to the grand Oscars event. The nominations will be officially announced on January 23.

Golden Globes 2024 Nominations: Barbie, Succession Season 4 Lead the Pack

The Golden Globes 2024 nominations were revealed last night, with Greta Gerwig’s feminist candy-coated romp Barbie, which dominated the box office charts this year, leading the pack. It’s got a whopping 10 nominations, including one for Best Musical or Comedy, alongside acting nods for stars Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling (supporting). The awards show has also added two new categories to recognise the best in entertainment, starting with a ‘Cinematic and Box Office Achievement’ category, which honours the biggest movies of the year, having grossed $150 million (about Rs. 1,250 crore) minimum, of which $100 million must be from within the US. Eight nominees compete for that award, including Barbie, Oppenheimer, and The Super Mario Bros. Movie.

Meanwhile, the Best Stand-Up Comedian recognises the best comics in the industry, airing across cable, streaming, or even live performances. It is worth mentioning that unlike the Oscars or the Emmys, the Golden Globe Awards considers both movies and TV series for its honours, and segregates them further based on genre while steering clear of technical merits like editing, cinematography, and set design. As such, Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer is listed among the best drama films of the year, sharing the space with Martin Scorsese’s Killers of the Flower Moon, acclaimed law thriller Anatomy of a Fall, and Jonathan Glazer’s The Zone of Interest. Cillian Murphy has received a Best Actor nod for playing the always-exhausted titular theoretical physicist J. Robert Oppenheimer, while filmmaker Nolan competes for the Best Director and Best Screenplay awards.

Sandra Hüller has been stacking up strong critics’ praise in 2023 for her nuanced performances as a widower suspected of murder in Anatomy of a Fall and the clueless wife of a Nazi officer in The Zone of Interest. She competes to be crowned the best lead female actor in a drama for the former, against strong contenders such as Lily Gladstone (Killers of the Flower Moon), Carey Mulligan (Maestro), Greta Lee (Past Lives), and more. Emma Stone has received yet another award nomination for a Yorgos Lanthimos collaboration with Poor Things — listed under musical or comedy — alongside her co-stars Mark Ruffalo and Willem Dafoe.

Coming to television, the fourth and final season of Succession emerged as the favourite with nine nominations, including Best Drama Series. Adding to HBO’s tally is The Last of Us series, a screen adaptation of a beloved zombie-killing game, which served as a crowd-pleaser earlier this year, striking the right balance between appealing to gamers and mainstream audiences. Its co-leads Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey are also in awards consideration for best performance. Other notable entries in the drama category include Netflix’s The Crown season 6 and 1923. Oppenheimer Breaks Rs. 150-Crore Mark at the Indian Box Office

In its fourth week, Oppenheimer continues to dominate the Indian box office, crossing the Rs. 150 crore mark. The country remains the biggest market where the Christopher Nolan film has outgrossed its competition Barbie, which recently joined the billion-dollar club in worldwide returns. There are no official numbers available for Barbie’s financial returns in India, but the last recorded value is Rs. 32.75 crore, from earlier this month. Globally, Oppenheimer has collected an impressive $666.4 million (about Rs. 5,539 crore) from a reported budget of $100 million (about Rs. 821 crore), which has understandably been deemed profitable for Universal Pictures.

With these figures, Oppenheimer is currently the sixth highest-grossing film of the year, sitting right behind Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, which recently released on digital. Barbie, on the other hand, sits comfortably at the second position, having bested Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 and slowly headed on a path to overthrow The Super Mario Bros. Movie. Oppenheimer debuted exceptionally well in India, selling 1.7 million tickets through BookMyShow, during the opening weekend, with most audiences opting to watch in IMAX — just the way Nolan intended for the biopic to be viewed. Despite being R-rated, the film turned over a profit in India, while Barbie trailed further behind, partly due to not receiving a Hindi-language dub.

Oppenheimer has now become Nolan’s fifth-highest-grossing film, beating his other World War II movie Dunkirk, which made $525 million (about Rs. 4,362 crore) globally. The ‘Barbenheimer‘ craze significantly contributed to its success, in turn helping PVR Inox turn in a profit in an otherwise struggling region, where Hindi-language movies continued to disappoint — both critically and commercially. The Tom Cruise-led Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One was another major IMAX hit in July, showing a demand for Hollywood movies in the country. In fact, PVR Inox just launched India’s first standalone IMAX experience at Delhi’s Priya Cinema — a 316-seater theatre with a single IMAX screen that is dedicated to the said large-scale format.

On track to finish as Nolan’s biggest non-Batman movie, Oppenheimer marks his first film with Universal Pictures since severing ties with longtime partner Warner Bros. However, it was recently reported that WB was looking to make amends with the filmmaker, with the latter even receiving a seven-figure royalty cheque for his work on the time-bending espionage film Tenet, which was released in theatres amidst the pandemic. Nolan allegedly did some post-production work on Oppenheimer at the WB lot as well, raising suspicions of a mended relationship between the two parties.

Oppenheimer is now showing in theatres worldwide.

Oppenheimer Breaks Rs. 100-Crore Mark, Becoming Highest-Grossing IMAX Film from Hollywood in India

Oppenheimer has finally broken the 100-crore mark at the Indian box office, becoming the highest-grossing IMAX film from Hollywood in India. Having completed nearly two weeks in theatres, the film has comprehensively outsold Barbie in terms of ticket sales, with the latter having reportedly collected Rs. 32.75 crore. The tables are turned on the global scale, however, with the Christopher Nolan film having earned $412.4 million (about Rs. 3,406 crore), while Barbie is on track to cross the $800-million (about Rs. 6,606 crore) mark. It currently sits right behind Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 as the third-highest-grossing film of the year.

Meanwhile, Oppenheimer sits comfortably in the 11th position, having grossed $181.4 million (about Rs. 1,498 crore) within the US and Canada, and pooling in another $231 million (about Rs. 1,908 crore). In India especially, the film debuted exceptionally well, selling 1.7 million tickets via BookMyShow, during the three-day opening weekend. In fact, the ‘Barbenheimer‘ event as a whole has been beneficial for Indian cinemas, where Hindi-language films have been struggling to dominate. PVR Inox — the biggest movie theatre chain in the country — saw a big jump in revenue as July came in blasting with three big blockbusters — Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One, Barbie, and Oppenheimer.

It’s also worth noting that in India, Oppenheimer was released in both English and Hindi, thereby catering to a larger audience, while Barbie featured no additional language dubs. Of course, the biggest contributor to both film’s success has to be the internet memes that poked fun at the contrasting themes and fan-made merchandise. The aforementioned figures have placed Oppenheimer as the sixth highest-grossing film from Nolan, having beat Batman Begins, which benefitted from some re-releases to reach $373.6 million (about Rs. 3,088 crore). Considering that the film was also R-rated for nudity and language — the filmmaker’s first in nearly two decades — this marks a significant achievement, especially when its actors couldn’t properly promote the film due to the SAG-AFTRA strikes.

The success of both films is good for keeping the theatre business running, but there’s bound to be a drop in performance thanks to the ongoing actors’ and writers’ strikes in Hollywood. With both film and TV productions now at a standstill, for cinema operators, this emulates the same feeling as the pandemic era that caused moviegoers to stay at home. Fearing the worst, even movie studios have begun delaying major releases into the next year. Earlier this week, Sony Pictures delayed Kraven the Hunter by 11 months, going from October 6 to August 11, 2024. Meanwhile, Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse’s actors cannot do any voiceover acting during the strike, which caused the studio to remove its initial March 2024 date. Even Warner Bros. has been reportedly considering moving Dune: Part Two, as its star cast will be unable to do any promotional work.

Both Oppenheimer and Barbie are currently playing in theatres worldwide.

Hollywood Saves PVR Inox as Bollywood Bombs at Box Office

International cinema helped India’s biggest movie operator PVR Inox post a rise in first-quarter revenue, as Hindi films failed to bring moviegoers to theatres. A struggling Hindi film industry, coupled with the popularity of streaming services, has made it difficult for traditional theatres to bring in more people. The company said the June quarter witnessed a muted start, with limited releases in Hindi, but saw the highest number of Hollywood movies since the pandemic. This helped the firm log a more than 30 percent jump in revenue from operations to 13.05 billion rupees.

The box office picked up pace in May with the release of the controversial The Kerala Story, besides Fast X and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 from Hollywood, it added. PVR Inox, in its second quarter as a merged entity, posted a net loss came of 81.6 crore rupees, compared with a loss of 333 crore rupees last quarter.

It has about 35 percent to 40 percent market share in screenings for Bollywood movies, according to Emkay Research analysts. This came on the back of rising expenses with increased spends on food and beverages and heightened movie exhibition costs. India’s largest cinema operator, with 1,702 screens, has been recently banking on Hollywood’s Oppenheimer and Barbie to pack theatres, the combined advance sales for which were the highest for any film outside the Marvel or Avatar series.

“It’s heartening to see the blockbuster success of unconventional movies like Barbie and Oppenheimer in India, clearly indicating that audiences choose the big screen for a unique cinema experience,” PVR Inox Managing Director Ajay Bijli said. The firm said it was ‘optimistic’ for the rest of the year, with improved performance of mid-scale Hindi movies. PVR Inox’s shares were up as much as 2.4 percent on Tuesday.

After Barbie, Mattel Is Launching Its Own Cinematic Universe With 14 Movies: Report

Fresh off Barbie’s box office success, manufacturer Mattel, which owns the Barbie brand, is reportedly looking to expand on its IP with 14 new feature films, all in different stages of production. As per Variety, they include a surrealistic Barney movie, Lena Dunham’s take on Polly Pocket, a Hot Wheels movie produced by J.J. Abrams, and more. The Mattel executives are also keen to do sequels to Greta Gerwig’s candy-coated film, though the filmmaker isn’t thinking about a follow-up for now, claiming, “At this moment, it’s all I’ve got.” Then again, seeing the impressive $337 million (about Rs. 2,763 crore) it made during the opening weekend, it’s not hard to imagine that Warner Bros. and Mattel will want more.

The Variety report notes that producer Robbie Brenner, who currently leads Mattel Films, was hoping for Barbie to succeed, so they could bank on potential sequels and new projects based on established IP. This echoes the newly-appointed CEO Ynon Kreiz’s plan from 2018 when Mattel’s sales were dwindling, where he wanted to turn the toy company into a franchise composed of films, TV series, and theme parks — much like Disney. Their first step towards that goal seems to have paid off, with the Barbie movie outselling Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer, both having released on the same day.

Reports from earlier this month confirmed Oscar-winning actor Daniel Kaluuya (Nope) would be producing and starring in an adult-oriented ‘A24-type‘ film based on Barney, the friendly purple dinosaur from the children’s TV show Barney & Friends. Mattel executives claimed that it won’t be R-rated, but the themes would lean more towards an adult’s taste, featuring a ‘surrealistic’ take that’s similar to films like Being John Malkovich and Adaptation — from the brilliant minds of Spike Jonze and Charlie Kaufman. Speaking to Variety, producer Brenner claimed that the film will be about ‘identity and finding who you love and who feels alienated.’

The miniature-sized Polly Pocket is another toy brand that Mattel plans to turn into a movie, albeit it doesn’t have as big of a brand recognition as Barbie. Lena Dunham (Girls) will write and direct the movie, which stars Lily Collins (Emily in Paris, Mank) in the lead role. The film is still in its early stages, with producer Brenner claiming that a ‘great’ script was turned in. Meanwhile, J.J. Abrams (Mission: Impossible III) will produce a movie based on the Hot Wheels toy line, which is being described as ‘grounded and gritty’ with emotional characters that the audience will be able to relate to. Warner Bros. will be distributing it and since Abrams is involved, you might as well factor in some lens flare.

Fast & Furious star Vin Diesel is looking to delve into robots soon, with a feature film adaptation of Rock ‘Em Sock ‘Em Robots, the tabletop boxing game from Mattel that pits a red and a blue fighter against each other, as you mash away at joysticks attached to the ring. Ryan Engle — best known for Rampage — is writing the script. A He-Man live-action adaptation has been in the works for a long time, with Netflix cancelling ‘Masters of the Universe‘ just last week. Mattel is still looking for a new buyer for He-Man though, which it believes has the potential to explode into a ‘mega-franchise’. The now-cancelled film was to be directed by Aaron and Adam Nee (The Lost City) and featured West Side Story’s Kyle Allen as the lead actor.

Tom Hanks (The Terminal) is set to appear as the Mattel astronaut figurine Major Matt Mason, who lived and worked on the moon, attracting screenwriters Akiva Goldsman (I, Robot) and Michael Chabon (Star Trek: Picard). Thanks to the ongoing writers’ strike in Hollywood, it will be a while before the production moves forward. The company is also planning a PG-13 thriller surrounding the Magic 8 Ball, which was used as a fortune-telling toy back in the 1950s. And if that wasn’t absurd enough already, Mattel will also make a movie based on the UNO card game, which is being written by Marcy Kelly.

Mattel doesn’t seem to be done with dolls yet and wants to explore an American Girl movie for its expansive ‘Mattelverse.’ As per Variety, the film will be a family comedy that’s aimed at helping young girls ‘grow with confidence and develop character.’ Even Thomas & Friends is getting a fantasy film adaptation, directed by Marc Forster, who rose to prominence with World War Z and Finding Neverland. Amidst this exhaustive list, Mattel is also adapting a true story for the screen. Titled ‘Christmas Balloon,’ the film follows a young girl, who tied her Christmas present list to a balloon and sent it up into the air, only to be found by a grieving couple who work with the toy company to make her wishes come true. Gabby Lugo (A Million Little Things) is attached to write the screenplay.

PVR Inox Is Looking to Add Two More Superplexes This Year, One in Pune and Bengaluru Each

Cinema exhibitor PVR INOX on Thursday said it is looking to add two more superplexes this year as part of plans to expand its large format offering. The company opened its new 12-screen superplex in Bengaluru, having multiple cinema formats, taking its total to 158 screens in 25 cinemas in the city.

Superplexes or cinema halls with 10 or more screens offer a range of formats and experiences under one roof in mega malls with large floor areas.

“Bengaluru has always been a very special market for us, where the movie-going propensity is very high. People there watch all kinds of movies in multiple languages or genres and it is the best-performing city for us… We’re always looking at growth opportunities in Bengaluru,” PVR INOX Executive Director Sanjeev Kumar Bijli said.

The new superplex has 12 screens with 2,192 seats, he added. When asked how many superplexes the company plans to open across India, he said, “This year, we’re launching two more, one each in Bengaluru and Pune.” At present, the company has seven superplexes.

Bijli said superplexes are bringing a change in the entertainment landscape with futuristic cinema concepts and bespoke hospitality. With the addition of the new superplex in Bengaluru, the company has consolidated its presence in the south with a total of 542 screens in 96 properties, PVR INOX said.

In other news, PVR INOX co-CEO Gautam Dutta revealed that he’s expecting an industry-wide opening day gross box office collection of Rs. 7 crore for Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer and Rs. 4 crore for Barbie. Both films release this Friday and are expected to make a total of Rs. 45 crore — Rs. 30 crore for Oppenheimer and Rs. 15 crore for Barbie — during the opening weekend (Friday–Sunday collection) in India.

Gen Z ‘Barbie’ fans slammed for calling Ryan Gosling ‘old’

He’s plastic, and according to Gen Z, he’s not so fantastic. 

Social media is abuzz about the new “Barbie” movie trailer starring Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling – but Gen Z fans aren’t impressed with Gosling as Ken. 

“[R]yan gosling is too old to be playing ken i’m sorry his wrinkles are taking me out of the experience,” one fan tweeted. 

“I like Ryan Gosling but idk [I don’t know] why he looks a little too old and dry. Not sure if it’s because of the hair or tan but he needed some moisturizer,” another complained. 

Another fan had scathing commentary about “The Notebook” and the “Drive” star’s appearance. “Ryan gosling is too ugly and too old to be playing ken, they should’ve casted henry cavill or chris evans bye,” they wrote. 

Another fan tentatively wondered if voicing this opinion would get them canceled. “Heeeey so um will saying ‘ryan gosling looks too old to be playing ken’ get somebody cancelled???? asking for a friend,” they tweeted.

One fan on TikTok even called Gosling, “Grandpa Ken.”

Gosling is 42 while Robbie is 32. 

The “Barbie” movie’s tone looks like it will lean towards comedy and absurdity, with the trailer highlighting how Barbie and Ken don’t know what sex is. In the trailer, when Gosling’s Ken suggests that he and Margot’s Barbie go home together because they are “girlfriend and boyfriend,” she looks confused, asking what they would do. Ken pauses and replies, “I’m actually not sure.” 

The Greta Gerwig movie’s marketing is also leaning into the running gag that Barbie dolls have a wide range of occupations such as a president and a doctor, while Ken dolls are always “just Ken,” which has spawned countless memes.

Plenty of staunch Gosling defenders took up arms against Gen Z’s notion that he’s too “old” and “wrinkled” to play Ken.

“i would still choose 96 year old haggard ryan gosling as ken over anyone else,” one fan proclaimed. 

“Gen Z saying Ryan Gosling is too old to be Ken and calling him ugly ?? have y’all lost your minds,” another fan slammed. 

“i genuinely don’t think ryan gosling is ugly at all and that’s why all this discourse is making me mad,” another fan fumed. “like he’s kinda old looking, but ugly he is NOT. you guys are LYING.”

Other fans dug into the Barbie doll lore to explain why Gosling is the right Ken. 

“I don’t understand how people are saying Ryan Gosling looks too old in the Barbie movie like…this is a 50-year-old man,” one fan said, sharing an image of a Ken doll. 

Another fan had an in-universe explanation: “…. i don’t get the ryan gosling is too old thing. one of the running jokes in dreamhouse was that barbie is an older woman but no one knew how old,” they wrote, referring to the animated web series, “Barbie: Life in the Dreamhouse” and its Netflix continuation, “Barbie Dreamhouse Adventures.”

“‘Ryan Gosling is too old for ken,’ Ryan Gosling has been on this earth for less time then the character of ken has been in existence do you hear yourselves,” another fan fumed, referring to the fact that the Ken doll has existed since 1961. 

“Barbie” hits theaters on July 21.
