Why Santiago Cabrera’s ‘menacing’ role on ‘The Cleaning Lady’ stands out

Veteran actor Santiago Cabrera has been part of the superhero world (“Heroes”), domestic dramas (“Big Little Lies”) and sci-fi franchises (“Star Trek: Picard”).

Now, he’s entering the crime-thriller world of the Fox hit “The Cleaning Lady.”

“I like to shake things up,” Cabrera, 45, told The Post, referring to his disparate genres.

“I didn’t do comedy for a long time, and a bit of comedy has started to come my way lately [and] I really enjoyed that. Even in drama, I like being able to bring a lightness whenever possible, because that’s also life.

“Someone the other day asked if it was by choice that I’ve done stuff in the nerdy world – fantasy and sci- fi and comic book [shows]. Those are just the most incredible and loyal fans. I’ve loved being part of those stories and discovering what they mean to people.

“The more eclectic I can keep [my roles], the better.”

Now in Season 3 (airing Tuesdays at 8 p.m.), “The Cleaning Lady” (created by Miranda Kwok) is about  Cambodian-Filipino former doctor Thony De La Rosa (Elodie Yung), who comes to America for medical treatment for her son, where she gets a job as a regular cleaning service worker. As she struggles to support her son, she ends up getting ensnared in the criminal underworld, and becoming a “cleaning lady” for organized crime.

Tragically, former co-star Adan Canto, who played her criminal ally Arman Morales, died of cancer in January at age 42. Former co-star Oliver Hudson’s character, Garrett Miller, was also killed off in Season 2, leading to an influx of new characters in Season 3.

Cabrera, who is also known for playing Lancelot in the BBC series “Merlin,” joins the show as Ivy League educated attorney Jorge Sanchez, who enters the story with his cartel boss sister, Ramona (Kate del Castillo).

“I thought it was very refreshing to see a show on network TV with a lead like Elodie’s character,” said Cabrera.

“And at the same time, I love the idea of playing someone who is from this world of violence, but has the challenge to bring humanity to him. I got a very nice letter from the showrunners, starting with a two-page description of this guy’s arc for the season, and his background. It’s very refreshing to get that.

“I’ve seen a lot of gangster movies, of course, so I didn’t have to go watch all those again, but I watched as much of the show as I could before starting, to see the world you’re delving into,” he said. “What I love is that characters start to take a life of their own. Also what’s very freeing is, in these formats where you jump on board [a show a few seasons in] and discover it as you go along, you can use that discovery.”

“I loved that this very menacing and unpredictable person also has a softer human side,” said Cabrera. FOX

He said he liked the fact that Jorge is an unlikely family man, since he’s got a daughter and a sister.

“The family aspect and the sibling relationship was relatable,” Cabrera said. “I loved that this very menacing and unpredictable person also has a softer human side. I found that really interesting, the juxtaposition of those two worlds.”

As Season 3 progresses, “You’ll see a lot of the relationships start to develop, worlds start to collide and come together, interests will start to come together. I’m excited for audiences to get to know Jorge more, and see different sides of him,” he said.

Coming up, Cabrera said he’s not sure if he’s done with the “Star Trek” world — “Anything can happen, so never say never. I really enjoyed that character, so you never know” — and he’ll also co-star with Eva Longoria in the AppleTV+ show “Land of Women.”

“It’s a dramedy set in wine country,” he said. “It’s a lot of fun.”

Emmy Awards 2023 Delayed to January Due to Hollywood Actors and Writers Strikes

Emmy Awards 2023 have been officially delayed to next year. After months of dialogue between the Television Academy and new broadcaster Fox, the 75th Primetime Emmy Awards will now be held on January 16 at 6:30am IST in India/ January 15 at 5pm PT in the US. This marks the first time in two decades that the Emmys are being postponed — the first being in 2001, after the September 11 attacks. This latest delay is owing to the ongoing actors’ and writers’ strikes in Hollywood, which have halted several major film and TV productions. Nominees were revealed back in July, with Succession leading the pack, and a host will be decided upon once the strikes end.

Without the actors/ nominees, the awards show would look rather empty, and with no writers pulling the strings in the background with a proper script or jokes, the show was headed with no vision. As per The Hollywood Reporter, there was a scenario in which the show would’ve been telecasted without writers, but the lack of star power caused the delay unavoidable. You see, members of SAG-AFTRA (Hollywood actors union) are not allowed to star in or promote any film or TV projects they’re in, in addition to accepting awards for struck work until the union meets a fair agreement with major studios. It’s also the reason why several big-budget movies — boasting starry cast lineups — are getting delayed.

The 2023 Emmys were originally slated for September and now see a nearly four-month delay, during which the studios hope the strikes will subside. However, the new date also places it in an already busy awards season. As usual, the telecast also includes the Creative Emmys, which rewards excellence in technical elements in television and some other minor acts — a two-night event scheduled for January 6 and January 7. However, the second night coincides with the Golden Globe 2024 event, which celebrates both movies and TV series, essentially dampening the achievements of the already underappreciated creative department. What I’m trying to say is that all eyes would be on the bigger awards show.

Not to mention, there’s also the 2024 Critics Choice Awards on January 14 (Jan 15 for India), which falls exactly a day before the newly-set date for the Primetime Emmy Awards. So, these are back-to-back awards shows, with the former featuring television alongside film categories. For now, the other award broadcasters aren’t confirmed to be shuffling dates around. As noted before, the Emmy nominees have already been decided and the final voting timeline for Academy members stays the same — August 17–28. Even SAG-AFTRA and the DGA (Directors Guild of America) have their award ceremonies set for the month of February, in the run-up to the Oscars season.

It’s not clear whether the writers’ and actors’ union will be able to reach a fair agreement by January since a Deadline report from July revealed the statement made by an unnamed executive. “The endgame is to allow things to drag on until union members start losing their apartments and losing their houses,” they said. Another person deemed it a ‘cruel but necessary evil.’

The 75th annual Emmys are set to stream live from the Peacock Theater, Los Angeles, on early Tuesday, January 16 at 6:30am IST/ January 15 at 5pm PT in the US. In India, it will be available to stream on Lionsgate Play.

Emmy Awards 2023 to Be Delayed Out of September Date Due to Hollywood Strikes

The Primetime Emmy Awards are likely to be postponed due to the ongoing dual strikes called by the WGA and SAG-AFTRA in the US. According to Variety, vendors had been told the awards would no longer be happening on September 18 as planned.

The Television Academy and cable network Fox, which will broadcast the 75th edition of the award ceremony that rewards the best of talent from television and streaming space, are yet to officially announce the changes.

It will be for the first time in two decades that Emmys have been pushed from their planned date. In 2001, the ceremony was delayed two months in the wake of the September 11 terror attacks.

In 2020, the awards were held in a hybrid format due to the coronavirus pandemic with Jimmy Kimmel hosting the ceremony from LA’s Staples Center, while all the nominees joined from their homes and other locations.

Roughly 65,000 actors — the vast majority of whom make less than $27,000 (about Rs. 22 lakh) a year from their screen work — along with 11,500 screenwriters, are on strike, called by the Writers Guild of America (WGA) and the Screen Actors Guild-American Federation of Radio and Television Artists (SAG-AFTRA).

The joint strike, the first since 1960, was called after the WGA and SAG-AFTRA failed to reach a consensus for a new contract with the studios and streaming services, represented by the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP).

Members of the WGA were the first to start their strike in early May, demanding better wages, higher minimum pay, more writers per show, and shorter exclusive contracts among other things. The members of SAG-AFTRA joined them earlier this month.

Avatar 4 & 5: James Cameron May Not Direct Sequels, Here’s Why

James Cameron, who has directed Avatar: The Way of Water and is already working on its sequel Avatar 3, may not return for Avatar 4 and Avatar 5 as he plans to work on “some other things”. In a new interview, the Titanic filmmaker said that he might “pass the baton” to another director, if he is unable to fit the proposed sequels into his schedule. Cameron, however, didn’t drop any hints about who is likely to take over as director when he steps aside, which suggests that he may not have a replacement in mind right now.

Cameron told Empire: “The Avatar films themselves are kind of all-consuming. I’ve got some other things I’m developing as well that are exciting. I think eventually over time — I don’t know if that’s after three or after four — I’ll want to pass the baton to a director that I trust to take over, so I can go do some other stuff that I’m also interested in. Or maybe not. I don’t know.”

The veteran director further revealed that while Avatar 3 is a lock, the fate of its sequels will depend on “market forces”. Cameron added that he, either way, hopes to make Avatar 4 and Avatar 5 as they are part of “one big story”.

While nothing is set in stone, I wouldn’t be too surprised if Cameron does indeed go down this route after Avatar 3. He had previously roped in Robert Rodriguez to direct the Rosa Salazar-led cyberpunk actioner Alita: Battle Angel. Cameron initially wanted to adapt that for the big screen, but he was tied up with Avatar: The Way of Water.

Cameron, meanwhile, is awaiting the release of Avatar: The Way of Water, which has garnered a fair deal of attention due to its nearly-wordless teaser. The sequel to 2009’s sci-fi movie Avatar is headlined by Sam Worthington and Zoe Saldaña who reprise their roles as Jake Sully and Neytiri, respectively, from the first film. The likes of Stephen Lang, Dileep Rao, and Matt Gerald too return as their respective characters from Avatar. Lang and Gerald interestingly feature in Avatar: The Way of Water despite the fact that their characters died in the first film.

Kate Winslet, Cliff Curtis, Edie Falco, Brendan Cowell, Michelle Yeoh, Jemaine Clement, Oona Chaplin, Vin Diesel, and CJ Jones are the new additions to the Avatar universe.

Avatar: The Way of Water releases December 16 in India in English, Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, and Kannada. The second Avatar movie will be followed by three more sequels with Avatar 3, Avatar 4, and Avatar 5 slated for December 2024, December 2026, and December 2028, respectively. Cameron may not return to direct Avatar 4 and Avatar 5.
