OTT Releases This Week: Loki Season 2, Spider-Man Across the Spider-Verse, OMG 2, and More

We’re just a week into October, and our binge list is filled to the brim with new content. No one likes wasting time scrolling through OTT apps for hours, and therefore, we’re returned with an updated list of films and shows that’ll keep you entertained this weekend. Loki season 2 leads the pack of new releases this week, as we follow the God of Mischief’s time-hopping adventures and his encounter with alternate versions of beloved characters. In a similar multiversal vein, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse is finally available to stream on Netflix, tasking a young Miles Morales with solving a major conspiracy involving countless Spider-People.

It’s going to be a busy weekend, as Akshay Kumar’s OMG 2 also debuts Sunday, October 8, on Netflix — less than two months since its theatrical release. Oh, and let’s not ignore its box office competitor Gadar 2, starring Sunny Deol in the lead, which drops today on Zee5. With that, here’s a guide on what to stream this weekend:

Khufiya

When: Now streaming
Where: Netflix

Hardened R&AW operative Krishna Mehra (Tabu) is tasked with tracking down a mole within the organisation — one whose actions have led to an undercover spy’s death. Ali Fazal plays the suspect in question, often seen photocopying documents from his workplace and taking them back home, presumably to feed India’s defence secrets to enemy nations. Through 24/7 surveillance and bugs placed in his home, Agent KM and team relentlessly pursue him — across countries — all the while ensuring his innocent wife (Wamiqa Gabbi) and child remain safe. Directed by Vishal Bhardwaj, Khufiya also stars Ashish Vidyarthi (Kuttey).

Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse

When: Now streaming
Where: Netflix

A fledgling Miles Morales (Shameik Moore) is catapulted into the multiverse and trapped among an elite army of Spider-People in the hopes of saving its very existence. Joined by Gwen Stacy (Hailee Steinfeld) and the rebellious Spider-Punk (Daniel Kaluuya), he encounters the leader Miguel O’Hara/ Spider-Man 2099 (Oscar Isaac), a traumatised, driven, and almost vampiric leader of the Spider society, who believes the ends justify the means — no matter how severe. But when a choice is offered to prioritise the safety of every multiversal world over one person, Miles rejects it, spawning a wild goose chase where he must fight off and escape all kinds of Spider-Men.

Bear in mind that Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse is only part 1 of a two-part story, and it also brings in a clumsy new villain, The Spot (Jason Schwartzman). The animated film is also available to buy as VOD across multiple platforms.

Loki season 2

When: October 6 (Now streaming)
Where: Disney+ Hotstar

Lost and confused in an alternate timeline where no TVA members recognise him, the God of Mischief Loki (Tom Hiddleston) is forced to navigate uncharted timelines with a new Mobius M. Mobius (Owen Wilson). His goal is to be reunited with his original team, but his body won’t let him do so by randomly distorting and plopping him into past and future timelines. Things are getting wild and even the TVA archivist OB (Ke Huy Quan) has no solutions to the time slipping. What he does have, however, is some specialised equipment that’s meant to help out our heroes — presumably, with multiversal travel. In Loki season 2, Sylvie is now a McDonald’s employee, Hunter B-15 is a doctor, and Kang the Conqueror appears to be a stage magician?

OMG 2

When: October 8
Where: Netflix

Following a scandal involving his son, Kanti Sharan Mudgal (Pankaj Tripathi), a concerned citizen and strong devotee of Lord Shiva, requests the court to mandate sex education in his school’s courses, spawning an amusing courtroom drama. But his journey there was filled with tragedy, ranging from judgemental jeers from the neighbourhood to his son’s attempted suicide — all of which are subtly prevented by a mysterious messenger (Akshay Kumar) sent by the three-eyed god himself. Amit Rai (Road to Sangam) directs OMG 2, which also stars Yami Gautam as an opposing lawyer.

Choona

When: Now streaming
Where: Netflix

Jimmy Sheirgill stars in this heist comedy series as a corrupt politician obsessed with astrology, planning to overthrow the government. Unfortunately, he’s got a quirk — his day-to-day activities are carefully planned based on whether the stars and planets align in his favour. In his meteoric rise to the top, he’s created a bunch of enemies, all of whom thirst for revenge and conjure a strategy to steal Rs. 600 crore from under the politician’s nose. The location is a little tricky though: a heavily fortified party office teeming with 10 armed police officers, over 100 goons, and CCTV cameras at every corner. The team in Choona includes a rebel (Aashim Gulati), a shape-shifting informer (Namit Das), a mute man (Chandan Roy), an astrologer (Atul Srivastava), and a demoted police officer (Gyanendra Tripathi).

Gadar 2

When: October 6 (Now streaming)
Where: Zee5

When Tara Singh (Sunny Deol) goes missing during a skirmish in Pakistan and is believed to be captured, his now fully-grown son Jeete sets out to rescue him, entering uncharted territories from which they both must escape. Ameesha Patel reprises her role as Tara’s wife Sakeena Ali Singh, who’s now in shambles upon hearing about her husband’s disappearance, constantly reciting prayers for his and Jeet’s safety. An interesting thing to note here is that the child actor who played Charanjeet in the original 2001 film is the same person playing the adult version in Gadar 2.

Mumbai Diaries season 2

When: October 6 (Now streaming)
Where: Amazon Prime Video

Dr. Kaushik Oberoi (Mohit Raina) and his team of medics are served with a new set of challenges when a series of torrential rainfalls threaten to submerge Mumbai. The medical thriller continues to focus on the resilience of the crisis doctors, despite limited resources, lack of sleep, and fighting personal battles — some of which is remnant trauma from dealing with the 26/11 attacks. Much of the original cast returns in Mumbai Diaries season 2, including Konkana Sen Sharma, Tina Desai, and Natasha Bharadwaj.

Arcane Season 2 Will Reportedly Debut in Winter 2024

Arcane, the League of Legends spin-off series, is reportedly returning for its second season in late 2024. As per content creator LeagueOfLeaks, the window was revealed during the Video V Vision Conference held by Riot Games’ parent company Tencent with a Q4 2024 date, marking a debut sometime between October to December next year. Fans of the franchise, however, have been speculating that it’s likely to drop in early November, so it matches with season 1’s release and aligns with the 15th anniversary of the uber-popular MOBA game. The first chapter was widely regarded for its steampunk aesthetic and emotional storytelling, even leading to an Emmy Award for Outstanding Animated Program in 2022.

Season 2 was greenlit in November 2021, right around the time when Arcane’s final batch of episodes finished airing on Netflix. Since then, Riot Games, which now serves double duty as a game developer and production company, has been silent on its development, simply claiming that they don’t plan on rushing it. “I just watched the third episode of Season 2 before my flight to China, so we’re making progress on it,” Riot Games CEO Nicolo Laurent said in an interview, mentioning two main reasons for the long wait. “One, you want the quality, you just don’t wanna rush, and so that takes time. So that’s the good reason.”

The second reason is that the team never expected Arcane season 1 to be a success. Had they predicted it somehow, work on season 2 would have likely begun way in advance. It’s also worth noting that Riot largely served in a supervisor position on the show, and it was created by French animation studio Fortiche, whose biggest projects include some League of Legends collaborations.

Serving as a prequel to the LoL, Arcane is set in the posh, utopian city of Piltower and the oppressed underground of Zaun, who are constantly battling over new inventions that threaten revolution. The former city is known for its magic-honing hextech research, while the poor Zaunites create a new drug that transforms humans into monsters. Amidst all political drama, we’re also treated to the origin story of orphaned sisters Vi (Hailee Steinfeld) and Jinx (Ella Purnell), who get separated for years in the brewing tension between the regions. The sisters soon find themselves at opposing ends of the war through a dense storyline that touches upon the aspect of duality — be it the lead characters’ morals, or the cities in conflict.

In a Reddit AMA session, Arcane co-creators Christian Linke and Alex Yee confirmed that the second season will incorporate flashbacks, while adding that they want to explore other regions in the larger League of Legends universe. It’s unclear what those flashbacks will include, though I really hope we get to see the parental side of Silco the Zaunite drug lord, who raised Powder into the impulsive and manic Jinx. As per Gizmodo, Riot also planned on revealing scripts for the first season, but held back due to some plot threads that could be deemed as spoilers for the next chapter. It took six years to develop the first season of Arcane, so there are bound to be several rewrites and ideas floating around in those pages that need to be cleared out.

Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse Is Now Available to Watch On-Demand on YouTube, Apple TV, Zee5, More

Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse is now available to stream as video-on-demand. The second chapter in fledgling Miles Morales’ multiversal escapades is now available for renting and purchase across Apple TV, Youtube Movies, Amazon Prime Video, and Zee5. Out of these, only Apple TV offers the premium Ultra HD version with Dolby Atmos audio, albeit there’s only the option for purchase at Rs. 490. An SD (standard definition) version is also available at Rs. 390, and both of them come with subtitles in several languages. On YouTube Movies, the film starts at Rs. 590 for the SD version and Rs. 820 for the 1080p full-HD print — neither platform has options to rent.

Renting Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse is only possible on Amazon Prime Video and Zee5, though pricing on the former is a bit strange. Both SD and HD versions are listed for Rs. 399, which doesn’t make too much sense, as the customer would rather opt for higher quality — provided they have the internet bandwidth to support it, that is. Meanwhile, the version on Zee5 doesn’t mention what version you’ll get, but seeing the Rs. 349 price tag and its targeted audience being Indians (regional pricing), I’m inclined to believe that it will be HD quality. The platform also offers audio in 10 regional languages — same as theatrical — ranging between English, Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Marathi, Malayalam, Bengali, Kannada, Punjabi, and Gujarati.

Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse dominated the box office, collecting $683.8 million (about Rs. 56,62 crore) globally and setting a milestone as the highest-grossing Sony Pictures Animation film. If the numbers and reviews aren’t convincing enough, IGN has exclusively dropped the first 10 minutes of the film, which should give you a general vibe of the film. In it, Miles Morales (Shameik Moore), now reunited with Gwen Stacy (Hailee Steinfeld), is catapulted across the multiverse and trapped amongst an interdimensional web of Spider-People to solve a major conspiracy. When leader Miguel O’Hara/ Spider-Man 2099 (Oscar Isaac) comes up with a dangerous choice to save the multiverse, Miles rejects it, spawning an all-out war in which he leaps across dimensions, getting mauled by a Spider-Cat and more.

The Spot (Jason Schwartzman) appears to be the mysterious force behind the multiverse’s doom, thanks to his special abilities that let him open and travel across portals. Other key players include Daniel Kaluuya as Spider-Punk, Issa Rae as Jessica Drew/ Spider-Woman, and Jake Johnson as the original Spider-Man/ Peter Parker. Meanwhile, Karan Soni voices Pavitr Prabhakar/ Spider-Man India, whose universe Mumbattan is presented through a watercolour style mimicking old Indian comic books. There’s a total of six main art styles in the film, in addition to the wacky doodle sketches that add a ton more personality.

Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse is now available as VOD on YouTube Movies, Apple TV, Amazon Prime Video, and Zee5. It’s also still playing in select theatres across the country.

Spider-Man Across the Spider-Verse Third Trailer: Miles Morales Goes Up Against Multiversal Threat The Spot

Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse just got its third official trailer, ahead of its release on June 2. Sony Pictures and Marvel dropped the latest trailer for the big interdimensional chapter in Miles Morales’ arc, pitting him against a range of Spidey-themed enemies, including Spider-Cat. The footage also offers a closer look at antagonist The Spot, who threatens the multiverse with his portal-hopping abilities. The film will feature six major art styles, ensuring that each dimension offers a distinct vibe upon entering — a watercolour style for the India-themed Mumbattan, for instance.

The sequel has some big shoes to fill here, given that the first film Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse won the Oscar for Best Animated Feature Film in 2019.

The trailer for Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse opens with a voiceover from Miles (Shameik Moore): “My name’s Miles Morales. I’m Brooklyn’s one and only Spider-Man, and things are going great!”, he narrates, while his mom and dad patiently await his arrival for a meeting with his teacher. On the other side of the town, Miles is busy observing a weird, ghost-like guy trying to rob an ATM from inside a bodega. The suspect in question is The Spot (Jason Schwartzman), who can create interdimensional portals to stick his hand in and commit petty crimes such as robbery, or even move across the Multiverse freely. It is unclear what exact threat he poses to the larger multiverse, but Miles seems to be pretty annoyed by his antics. It’s almost as if The Spot doesn’t know how to use his own powers — he appears to be quite clumsy. After a brief scuffle, Miles finally makes it to the meeting, where the teacher explains that he’s been doing well academically, although his Hispanic mom isn’t happy with his scores in Spanish class.

“Welcome to Spider Society,” Margo Kess/ Spider-Byte tells Miles, who is eventually catapulted across the multiverse to work with an elite crew of Spider-People. Leading the team is Miguel O’Hara/ Spider-Man 2099 (Oscar Isaac), who believes the end justifies the means and is willing to sacrifice anything to protect the multiverse. “Miles, there’s moments in our stories that are the same for all of us,” he says in the Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse trailer. “Some good, some bad. You have a choice between saving one person and saving everyone.” Understandably, Miles rejects the job proposal, spawning a war against a host of Spider-People from different universes.

“Everyone keeps telling me how my story is supposed to go. Nah, I’mma do my own thing,” Miles tells Spider-Man 2099, hoping across dimensions with giant Spot hands, an India-themed universe, and even encountering a Spider-Cat that webs his face. Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse also stars Hailee Steinfeld as Gwen Stacy, Karan Soni as Pavitr Prabhakar/ Spider-Man India, Daniel Kaluuya as Spider-Punk, Issa Rae as Jessica Drew/ Spider-Woman, and Jake Johnson as the OG Spider-Man/ Peter Parker.

Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse swings into theatres worldwide on June 2. In India, the animated movie will be out in English, Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Punjabi, Gujarati, Marathi, Bengali, Kannada, and Malayalam.
