New York Giants may conduct joint practices with Detroit Lions in 2024

The New York Giants and Detroit Lions held joint practice during training camp in 2023 and are looking to run that back in 2024.

While speaking to reporters at the Annual League Meeting this past Tuesday, Lions head coach Dan Campbell revealed that he’s spoken to Giants head coach Brian Daboll about linking up once again.

“That’s not in stone,” Campbell said, via the Detroit Free Press. “Because I said this last year and I know Mr. (John) Mara got on me like, ‘Hey, this thing’s already out.’ So there’s a chance. I don’t know if it’s going to get done or not, but we’ve been talking about it just because we wanted to reciprocate the fact they came to us, we wanted to give it to them.”

The Giants visited Allen Park for two joint practices last year ahead of a preseason game at Ford Field. This time around, as Campbell alludes, the practices would be held in East Rutherford.

Since teams are only permitted to request a single preseason opponent, these discussions would indicate that both the Giants and Lions have asked the league to pair them up once again.

Still, Campbell, who is a former Giant himself, would like to have joint practice in back-to-back weeks just as they had done last year.

“I would love to do two weeks again like we did last year,” Campbell said. “It’ll be predicted on who that is and whether we go to them or they come to us. But yeah, I’m all for it.”

Meanwhile, the Giants held joint practices with the New York Jets in 2022 but had their plans for 2023 canceled. At the time of that cancellation, Jets head coach Robert Saleh said the two sides would revisit those discussions in 2024.

Giants, Lions wrap up joint practice No. 1: News, notes and quotes

Danielle Parhizkaran-USA TODAY Sports

The Giants’ offense and quarterback Daniel Jones dominated 7-on-7 drills to start Tuesday’s practice with DJ completing six of his eight pass attempts.

The bad news is that during the next series of drills (11-on-11), the Giants offense was shut down with Jones only going 1-of-4 with a would-be sack (Aiden Hutchinson) and a near-interception.

Things got no better for DJ from there.

There were a few drops (Saquon Barkley, Darius Slayton) sprinkled in.

As Bobby Skinner noted, there were also some ugly moments for the defense. They played solid during the first team period but then fell apart in 7-on-7’s.

Justin Penik with the breakdown:

Unfortunately for the Giants, there was more bad than good on both sides of the ball.

Brian Daboll readying New York Giants for joint practices with Lions

The New York Giants will be playing their first preseason game in less than a week and there’s still much work to be done. On Monday evening, they will travel to Detroit to hold joint practices with the Lions before the two teams play one another on Friday night at Ford Field.

The agreement to have joint practices came this offseason between Giants head coach Brian Daboll and Dan Campbell, the Lions’ head man.

The two have a long-standing relationship going back to 2011 when Daboll was the Miami Dolphins’ offensive coordinator and Campbell served as his tight ends coach.

Daboll told reporters he hasn’t spoken personally with Campbell since they set these dates up but the two organizations have been in contact and have been coordinating.

“Once you get going to plan these, the coordinators are in communication to make sure the practices are the scripts,” Daboll explained.

“We kind of setup the scripts and what we want to try and accomplish in the practice back in June or whenever it was we talked. We will revisit probably this weekend or Monday just to make sure we are on point. What do they have injury wise, what do we have, do we need to cut something down, do we need to add more? Those are conversations that will take place but have a lot of respect for Dan. Done a great job. Go out there and have some productive days, that’s the most important.”

And what exactly are those ‘scripts’ he is talking about?

“It’s really not much different than the practices that you have, that you script out here,” Daboll said. “There is third down, there’s red zone, there is first and second down. There’s a bunch of different things, you just kind of put them together. Our sports science people talk to their sports science so it’s a collective agreement in terms of how we want to approach practice, the things we want to get out of it and practice the right way the best you can.”

No one is sure who will play on Friday and if Daboll intends to use any of his starters. That information will likely be determined midweek.
