Russia Says Cases Opened Against Google, Others For Personal Data Legislation Violation

Russia’s communications regulator Roskomnadzor said on Friday it had opened administrative cases against Alphabet Inc’s Google and six other foreign technology companies for alleged violations of personal data legislation.

Moscow has clashed with Big Tech over content, censorship, data and local representation in a simmering dispute that has erupted into a full-on information battle since Russia sent tens of thousands of troops into Ukraine on February 24.

Russia fined Google RUB 3 million (roughly Rs. 35 lakh) last year for not storing the personal data of Russian users in databases on Russian territory, and on Friday said it had opened a new case over what it called Google’s repeated failure to comply with Russian legislation.

Google, which declined to comment, could be fined between RUB 6-18 million (roughly Rs. 70 lakh to Rs. 80 lakh), Roskomnadzor said.

The regulator also said it had opened cases against six other companies – Airbnb, Pinterest, Likeme, Twitch, Apple and United Parcel Service – for alleged first-time offences carrying a potential fine of RUB 1-6 million (roughly Rs. 1 lakh to Rs. 70 lakh).

Likeme could not be reached, while the other five companies had no immediate comment.

Apple Music Subscription Price for Students Hiked in India, Other Countries

Apple Music subscription price for students has been increased in India and some other markets. As a result of the update, Apple is charging Rs. 59 a month to college students for accessing its music streaming service in the country. Apple Music subscription for regular users has, however, not been revised and still starts at Rs. 99 a month. Apple has informed its student subscribers about the change through an email. Apple Music student subscription is claimed to offer access to 90 million songs and more than 30,000 expert-curated playlists. The bundled offerings with the service are identical to those the iPhone maker is offering to its regular customers under the Individual plan.

The company’s official site is reflecting the revised pricing of the Apple Music subscription for student users. It shows that the service is available at Rs. 59 a month. This is an over 20 percent increase from the earlier monthly charge of Rs. 49.

According to a report MacRumors, the change is not limited to India but is in place for student subscribers in other regions as well. These include Australia, Indonesia, Israel, Kenya, Malaysia, New Zealand, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, South Africa, and the Philippines.

Despite the revision, Apple is still offering the student subscription with a discount over the regular Individual plan that is priced at Rs. 99 a month in India. Apple Music Family plan is also available to have access to the service for up to six people at Rs. 149 a month. Further, Apple offers Apple Music Voice at a monthly charge of Rs. 49.

The student subscription is specifically meant for university students. Users signing up for the service need to verify their university enrolment via discount site UniDays. A valid payment method is also required to be added to the Apple ID for billing the subscription.

iPhone 13, iPhone 13 Pro Max Top Most Sold Smartphones List for Q1 2022: IDC

iPhone 13 and iPhone 13 Pro Max reportedly took the top two spots on the most sold smartphones list for the first quarter of 2022. This information comes from IDC analyst Francisco Jeronimo who shared a top-five list of the best-selling smartphones in Q1 2022. Another Apple handset found its way into this list at the fourth position. The remaining two spots at third and fifth were secured by handsets from Samsung. However, the information shared by Jeronimo does not include the actual number of units sold for these smartphones.

Jeronimo posted this information on Twitter which says that the smartphone market was dominated by Apple in Q1 2022 with the iPhone 13 sitting in the top spot. It is followed by the iPhone 13 Pro Max with a 6.7-inch display in second. Meanwhile, the iPhone 13 Pro with a 6.1-inch screen was able to secure the fourth place which might suggest that Apple customers were willing to pay extra for a slightly larger display.

The tweet also mentions that the iPhone 13 sales were around $42 billion (roughly Rs. 3,26,224 crore) for this quarter. This figure reportedly accounted for up to 84 percent of the iPhone sales in this period. Apple has kept its momentum going after recording its most profitable holiday season (October to December) last year, despite facing supply shortages. During this period, the Cupertino company reported iPhone sales of $71.63 billion (roughly Rs. 5,56,393 crore).

On the other hand, Samsung also made its way onto this list with the Galaxy A12 and Galaxy A32 low-end smartphones that came 3rd and 5th, respectively. The combined sales of these smartphones for Q1 2022 supposedly generated $3.6 billion (roughly Rs. 27,963 crore) for the South Korean tech giant.

Apple’s New Privacy Ad Showcases a ‘Data Auction’ to Incline People Towards iPhone

Apple on Wednesday kicked off a new ad campaign to promote its key privacy features and eventually convince people to pick an iPhone over the competition. Themed ‘Data Auction’ where an auctioneer is seen selling data of a user, the ad highlights the fact that how people nowadays are losing their personal data at different stages and through various resources, including emails, messages, and browser history. It portrays Apple’s App Tracking Transparency and Mail Privacy Protection as some of the inbuilt features to help protect data tracking. The given offerings aren’t that foolproof, though.

The over one-and-a-half-minute ad begins with introducing protagonist Ellie whose data has been put on auction. The auctioneer puts different types of Ellie’s data on sale. It includes her emails, purchase history, location data, contacts, browser history, and text messages.

Advertisers and marketers capture data from various resources to understand user patterns. The Cupertino company claims that it designs its products and features in a way to “minimise how much of your data” anyone can access.

The ad, which is the second after the last privacy campaign released last year, shows that once Ellie turns on App Tracking Transparency by asking apps to “not track” activity for sharing with advertisers or data brokers. The feature was brought to users in April last year — after some delay due to implementation concerns.

Although Apple says that the feature lets users choose whether an app can track their activity across other apps and websites for advertising and sharing patterns with data brokers, it was recently found to be not foolproof and could still allegedly allow developers to track users.

The ad also demonstrates the Mail Privacy Protection feature that is claimed to protect information such as your IP address and other data when you send an email to a recipient. It works with the preloaded Mail app that is available on the iPhone, iPad, and Mac devices.

Apple additionally has features including Intelligent Tracking Prevention in Safari and Location Services privacy controls that were recently introduced to enhance privacy of iPhone users. The purpose of the ad is to emphasise on these offerings — to eventually convince people to buy an iPhone.

The recent privacy updates have already helped Apple to not just expand its iPhone market but also grow its advertising business as new clients are approaching the company to serve their ads to iPhone users.

Nevertheless, Google is following in the footsteps of Apple for the last few months and implementing certain similar changes to Android to make it a strong competitor against iOS — from the privacy perspective. The Mountain View, California-headquartered company just earlier this week released a campaign called ‘Protected by Android’ to highlight its native privacy-focussed changes on the world’s biggest mobile operating system to take on Apple.

Privacy enhancements available on both iOS and Android are making it easier for users to restrict tracking on their devices. However, advertisers, data brokers, and marketers are exploring new ways to break the system-level restrictions and find avenues to continue to track users to some extent — to retain their ad businesses. The privacy barriers are, though, resulting in cost burdens for companies including Meta and Snap that were previously using activity tracking to target the masses as it has become harder for them to do so nowadays.

That said, the new ad campaign by Apple has started running in 24 countries in total and will be translated in languages other than English in select markets to reach a large number of audiences. The company will also place new billboards in every country where the ad is running to better reach its potential customers.

Apple Introduces New Accessibility Features Including Door Detection, Live Captions

Apple on Tuesday announced a list of accessibility features that are aimed to help users with disabilities. The new features, which are coming to the iPhone, Apple Watch, and Mac later this year, are claimed to use hardware, software, and machine learning advancements to help people who have low vision or are visually impaired or the ones with physical or motor disabilities. The features include Door Detection for iPhone and iPad users, Apple Watch Mirroring, and live captions. Apple also announced updates to VoiceOver, with 20 additional locales and languages.

One of the most useful accessibility features that Apple introduced as a part of its latest updates is Door Detection that uses LiDAR sensor on the latest iPhone or iPad models to help navigate users to locate a door. The feature uses a combination of LiDAR, camera, and on-device machine learning to understand how far users are from the door and describe the door’s attributes, including whether it is open or closed, the company said.

If the door is closed, the Door Detection feature can help people open it by pushing, turning a knob, or pulling a handle. It is also claimed to read signs and symbols around the door, such as the room number, and even recognise the presence of an accessible entrance symbol.

The Door Detection feature, which will work with the iPhone 13 Pro, iPhone 13 Pro Max, iPhone 12 Pro, iPhone 12 Pro Max, iPad Pro 11-inch (2020), iPad Pro 11-inch (2021), and the iPad Pro 12.9-inch (2020) and iPad Pro 12.9-inch (2021), will be available through the pre-installed Magnifier app.

Apple’s Magnifier app will have a new Detection Mode to enable access to the Door Detection feature. It will also have People Detection and Image Descriptions as the two new features that can work alone or simultaneously along with Door Detection to help support people with visually impaired or low vision.

Alongside the updates within Magnifier, Apple Maps will also get sound and haptic feedback for users who have enabled VoiceOver to help them identify the starting point for walking direction, the company announced.

The Apple Watch will also get dedicated Apple Watch Mirroring support to let users control the smartwatch remotely using their paired iPhone. The new offering will help users control Apple Watch using iPhone’s assistive features, including Voice Control and Switch Control. Users can use inputs such as voice commands, sound actions, head tracking, and even external Made for iPhone switches as alternatives to tap the Apple Watch display.

All this will assist people with physical and motor disabilities.

Apple said that Apple Watch Mirroring uses hardware and software integration on the system, including AirPlay advancements, to allow users to use features including Blood Oxygen and Heart Rate tracking and Mindfulness app. The mirroring feature will work with the Apple Watch Series 6 and later models.

Apple Watch users will also get double-pinch gesture support. This will help users answer or end a phone call, dismiss a notification, take a photo, play or pause media in the Now Playing app, and start, pause, or resume a workout — all by using the double-pinch gesture. It will work with AssistiveTouch on Apple Watch.

For deaf users or those with hearing impairments, Apple announced Live Captions on the iPhone, iPad, and Mac. It will be available later this year in beta in English for users in the US and Canada on the iPhone 11 and later, iPad models with A12 Bionic and later, and Macs with Apple silicon.

Live Captions will work with any audio content, including phone and FaceTime calls, as well as video conferencing or social media app, streaming media content, and even in case users are having a conversation with someone next to them, the company said.

Users can adjust font size for ease of reading. The feature in FaceTime will also attribute auto-transcribed dialogue to call participants to make it more convenient for users with hearing disabilities to communicate with each other over video calls.

On Mac, Live Captions will come along with the option to type a response and have it spoken aloud in real time to others who are part of the conversation, Apple said. It also claimed that Live Captions will be generated on device — keeping privacy and user safety in mind.

Apple’s native screen reader — VoiceOver — is also getting 20 additional locales and languages, including Bengali, Bulgarian, Catalan, Ukrainian, and Vietnamese. There will also be dozens of new voices that are touted to be optimised for assistive features across all supported languages.

The new languages, locales, and voices will also be available for Speak Selection and Speak Screen features. Further, VoiceOver on Mac will work along with the new Text Checker tool to fix formatting issues such as duplicated spaces or misplaced capital letters.

Apple also introduced some additional accessibility features to celebrate the Global Accessibility Awareness Day this week. These features include Siri Pause Time that will help users adjust how long the voice assistant waits before responding to a request, Buddy Control to ask care provider or friend to play a game, and a customisable Sound Recognition that is claimed to be customised to recognise sounds that are specific to a person’s environment, like their home’s unique alarm, doorbell, or appliances.

The preloaded Apple Books app will also include new themes and customisation options such as bolding text and adjusting line, character, and word spacing to deliver a more accessible reading experience to users. Further, the Shortcuts app on Mac and Apple Watch starting this week will help recommend accessibility features based on user preferences using a new Accessibility Assistant shortcut.

Apple Maps will also get a new guide from the National Park Foundation, Park Access for All, to help users discover accessible features, programmes, and services to explore in parks across the US Guides from Gallaudet University. It will additionally highlight businesses and organisations that value, embrace, and prioritise the Deaf community and signed languages.

Users will also get accessibility-focussed apps and stories from developers in the App Store as well as the Transforming Our World collection in Apple Books with stories by and about people with disabilities. Apple Music will also highlight the Saylists playlists where each will focus on a different sound.

Similarly, the Apple TV app will feature the latest hit movies and shows featuring authentic representation of people with disabilities.

Users will also get the ability to explore guest-curated collections from the accessibility community’s standout actors, including Marlee Matlin (“CODA”), Lauren Ridloff (“Eternals”), Selma Blair (“Introducing, Selma Blair”), and Ali Stroker (“Christmas Ever After”), among others.

The Apple Fitness+ service this week will also bring trainer Bakari Williams who will use American Sign Language (ASL) highlight features, including Audio Hints, which are short descriptive verbal cues to support visually impaired or low vision users, and Time to Walk and Time to Run episodes becoming “Time to Walk or Push” and “Time to Run or Push” for wheelchair users.

ASL will also be a part of every workout and meditation on Apple Fitness+, and all videos will include closed captioning in six languages. Trainers will also demonstrate modifications in each workout to help people requiring accessibility assistance join in.

Apple is additionally launching SignTime to connect Apple Store and Apple Support customers with on-demand ASL interpreters. SignTime is already available for customers in the US using ASL, the UK using British Sign Language (BSL), and France using French Sign Language (LSF). Furthermore, Apple Store locations around the world have already started offering live sessions throughout the week to help customers discover accessibility features on iPhone, and Apple Support social channels are showcasing how-to content, the company said.

iPod Touch Officially Discontinued, Ending iPod Line After 20 Years

Apple has officially announced the discontinuation of the last iPod Touch model, effectively ending its iconic iPod product line, which began with the launch of the original iPod in October 2001. While Apple did not create the market for portable music players, it captured the imagination of the world at the time, with its unique scroll wheel and convenient shape and size. In addition to various iterations of the original iPod, Apple also sold the extremely popular iPod mini, iPod nano, iPod shuffle, and iPod Touch series over the past several years.

The company eventually reduced the portfolio, discontinuing the iPod (later renamed iPod Classic), iPod nano, and iPod shuffle over the past several years. The series had not been updated since the launch of the 7th Gen iPod Touch in mid-2019, which came four years after the previous refresh and was the sole remaining model on sale. Even its presence on Apple’s official website had been diminished, as other products, most notably the iPhone, replaced it.

Apple’s iPod became a pop culture sensation, with several iconic advertisements highlighting the white earphones that were bundled with it. Excitement ran high each time a new model was expected to be launched. The original iPod, with its 5GB capacity and FireWire connection, was exclusively compatible with Macs, but Apple in 2003 capitalised on the line’s popularity and announced a Windows version of the iTunes app required to manage music on iPods at the time. That move would be credited with helping Apple establish its brand identity in the Steve Jobs era.

Over the past 20 years, Apple introduced new features such as the click wheel with a touch surface and integrated buttons and flash memory beginning with the iPod nano line. The iTunes Music Store allowed users to purchase and sync music, before streaming became dominant and Apple replaced it with Apple Music. When the iPhone was first unveiled in 2007, it was billed as an iPod with touch controls as well as an Internet-connected device and a mobile phone.

With the growing popularity of the iPhone as well as streaming services, Apple cut down its focus on the iPod line, and the lack of updates beyond the 7th Gen iPod Touch has indicated the eventual discontinuation of the line for years now.

While the iPod Touch was at times highlighted as a gaming device, or a more affordable Internet-connected device for children, it is less relevant now in the age of streaming content. Apple now says this model will remain available while stocks last, but suggests its various other products including iPhones, the Apple Watch, and HomePod mini as ways to listen to music on the go and at home.

Google Under Investigation by Dutch Consumer Watchdog Over Play Store Payments

The Dutch consumer watchdog on Wednesday said it had launched a preliminary investigation into Google over its Play store for apps, months after targeting fellow tech giant Apple.

The Match Group, which owns dating site Tinder, lodged a complaint saying that Google only allowed its own payment system to be used when purchasing apps, the Authority for Consumers and Markets said.

Google Play is used to buy applications to be used on smartphones and tablets using Google’s Android system, which together with Apple dominates the global market.

“We very recently received a complaint, and we will see if there is material to launch a formal inquiry,” the Dutch regulator’s spokesman Murco Mijnlieff told AFP.

The process “could take years” but the competition watchdog “may be able to get results faster because of the possible resemblance to Apple”, he added.

The Netherlands fined Apple a total of $52 million (roughly Rs. 396 crore) between January and March this year for similar conditions relating to payments on Apple’s App Store.

The watchdog said app developers must be able to use other payment systems than Apple’s. Apple has still not complied, and the Dutch regulator is now considering a further fine, Mijnlieff said.

Silicon Valley giants have repeatedly come up against problems in the United States and Europe over alleged anti-competitive behaviour.

The EU formally accused Apple on Friday of unfairly squeezing out its music streaming rivals.

Samsung Galaxy Watch 5 Said to Skip Body Temperature Tracking Feature: Ming-Chi Kuo

Samsung Galaxy Watch 5, the next smartwatch in the South Korean tech giant’ smartwatch range, has been rumoured to come with a thermometer feature that can be used to track skin temperature, which is useful to detect early signs of infection and track ovulation cycles. However, it seems like Samsung might not be able to add this feature to its upcoming smartwatch. Apple is also trying to bring this feature to its next-gen smartwatch, but hasn’t had any success yet, according to noted analyst Ming-chi Kuo. Therefore, he believes that that if Apple could not do the same with their smartwatch, Samsung too can’t do it.

Reportedly, Samsung is facing difficulties coding the temperature-reading algorithm for the Galaxy Watch 5, almost similar to what Apple had gone through while adding this feature to Apple Watch 7 Series. However, this process is said to be necessary to enable the hardware sensors to deliver accurate readings. Previous reports, once again by TF International Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, have hinted at Apple working to include the same feature to measure body temperature in the Apple Watch Series 8. Kuo said due to lack of a qualifying algorithm, Apple didn’t add the body temperature feature to Apple Watch Series 7.

Kuo, through a tweet, claims that “Apple has already given up on implementing body temperature readings for this year’s 7th-gen Apple Watch (it looks like a “better luck next year” scenario) and speculates that Samsung won’t be able to do the same for the Watch 5.”

The challenge both Samsung and Apple are facing somehow relates to the fact that surface skin temperature can vary depending on external factors. Meanwhile, both the companies are trying to work on hardware that is capable of reading surface temperatures in order to allow their smartwatches to take accurate readings.

Moreover, Apple might win by solving this puzzle with the Apple Watch 8 Series before Samsung and can bring this feature to the market. Samsung’s Galaxy Watch 5 may offer other new features and design, but if recent claims are to go by, then the smartwatch may not come with a body temperature sensor.

A recent report claimed that the Samsung Galaxy Watch 5 may launch with slightly larger batteries for the 40mm and 44mm models compared to the Samsung Galaxy Watch 4 series. The report said the Galaxy Watch 5 40mm (EB-BR900ABY) will have a 276mAh battery, up from 247mAh (+29mAh). The larger Watch 5 44mm (EB-BR910ABY) will have a 397mAh battery, up from 361mAh (+36mAh). The Galaxy Watch 5 generation won’t be unveiled until the second half of this year, the report added.
