ONDC to Be Open to Public Soon to Counter Amazon, Walmart’s Dominance: ONDC Exec

The Open Network for Digital Commerce (ONDC) — India’s e-commerce network to end the dominance of US companies Amazon and Walmart — will be soon open to the public, said an official, as per a report. The pilot phase for India’s domestic digital commerce initiative began in April. In cities including Delhi NCR, Bengaluru, Bhopal, Coimbatore and Shillong, the customers were allowed to do transactions on the UPI-type protocol. Through the ONDC platform, the government will mostly promote the small merchants and rural consumers. For the ease of customers in India, the app will be available in various Indian languages.

Speaking at the Saral 2022 Mega E-commerce Summit, ONDC’s Chief Business Officer Shireesh Joshi mentioned that the digital network will be open to public soon, as per a PTI report. The government has been continuously working on the platform and will schedule the availability to general public in the coming time.

ONDC is India’s domestic effort in the e-commerce space to curb the dominance of two large multinational e-commerce players — Amazon and Walmart. Both the US companies currently control more than half of India’s e-commerce trading.

ONDC will provide platform and space to small merchants and rural consumers by steeing up standards for voluntary adoption by sellers, logistics providers or payment gateways.

The platform was launched in April. The move was taken after India’s antitrust body raided several domestic sellers of Amazon and some of Walmart’s Flipkart following complete law violation accusations.

I needed therapy to survive violent scenes

If you can’t beat ’em, train with ’em.

“Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power” star Morfydd Clark revealed the intense way she prepared for her role as Galadriel — an ethereal warrior elf that was played by Cate Blanchett in the films.

“When I was playing Galadriel, the stunt team said, ‘You’ve got a problem because you’re used to being attacked on film,’ ” she told Empire about adjusting to J.R.R. Tolkien’s Middle Earth fantasy world.

“I would flinch a lot when people came at me. So they did exposure therapy with me, where I would have all these huge, huge men running at me, screaming with swords. To stop me from looking frightened. Because I’ve definitely been cast as the victim. And Galadriel is not that,” she explained.

Morfydd Clark said the therapy helped her not look scared on camera.

The 33-year-old’s “Rings” role is different from the types of jobs she usually books. Clark is most recognizable for portraying a traumatized nurse in “Saint Maud” but has always been a fan of Tolkien’s franchise — even if she didn’t realize she was auditioning for it right away.

“The first [audition], I didn’t know what I was auditioning for,” Clark recalled. “The actress next to me looked over all sneaky and was like, ‘Do you know what this is for? It’s “Lord Of The Rings.” ’ And I’m forever grateful to her,” she declared.

“I went into the toilet and just stared at myself and was like, ‘You’ve gotta pull yourself together. You’ve been training for this for years,’ ” Clark said of her audition. “‘ You know what to do, it’s in your blood.’ Because I’d been obsessively watching ‘Lord Of The Rings’ for my whole childhood.”

The series is set thousands of years before the original films and features new, diverse characters that are meant to modernize the series.

The Amazon Prime series was a personal venture to CEO Jeff Bezos, who is a longtime fan of the franchise. He passed that passion down to his son, who Bezos said gave him some advice on the show.

Morfydd Clark said she is a longtime fan of “The Lord of the Rings.”

“He looked me in the eyes, very sincerely, and he said: ‘Dad, please don’t eff this up,’ ” he shared at the series premiere in London on Tuesday,

The first two episodes of “The Rings of Power” are now streaming on Amazon Prime Video.

Snap Plans to Cut Over 20 Percent Staff, Netflix Hires Two Former Snap Executives: Reports

Snap is reportedly laying off over 20 percent of its workforce in the company’s latest move after losing shares. While the Snapchat parent has not revealed any details on the job cut, the company has reportedly confirmed on Tuesday that two of its senior advertising executives have exited. Meanwhile, Netflix has gave its nod to reports citing that the two former Snap executives will be joining the streaming major for the worldwide advertising roles. It was reported earlier this month that Snap is in early stages of planning layoffs.

According to Reuters, Snap confirmed the employee departure of two of its top executives after a report revealed company’s plan to lay off over 20 percent of its staff. The social messaging service has not commented on the Verge report detailing the staff cut plans, citing the people close to the development.

The layoffs have been under plans for several weeks now, the report mentioned. It also mentioned that a few departments will see more job cuts than others starting today. Two of the major departments reported to be hit severely will be Snap’s team working on ways for developers to build mini apps and games, and Zenly.

Meanwhile, top executives Jeremi Gorman, Chief Business Officer, and Peter Naylor, Vice President of Ad Sales, have also served their resignations. The two officers will now join Netflix starting September, the streaming major confirmed, in its statement to Deadline.

In his statement to Deadline, Netflix COO Greg Peters said, “I am excited to welcome Jeremi Gorman as our President, Worldwide Advertising, and Peter Naylor as our Vice President, Advertising Sales, to Netflix.”

While Gorman, a former Amazon executive, joined Snap in 2018, Naylor, a former Hulu‘s Senior Vice President of ad sales, became a part of Snap in 2020.
