Google Pixel 7, Pixel 7 Pro Don’t Support the Latest 5G Standard: Report

Google Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro have received 5G support in India after the Android 13 QPR2 Beta 2 update released earlier this year. The latest Google Pixel series phones support 5G networks only on Airtel and Jio. However, a recent report has revealed that the Pixel 7 series phones only support the first 3GPP 5G standard i.e., Release 15, and not the latest 5G standard. Release 15 is the first 5G standard that was introduced in 2018.

According to a report by 9to5 Google, Pixel 7 series only comes with the first 3GPP 5G standard i.e., Release 15. It was introduced in 2018, followed by Release 16 in July 2020, and Release 17 and 18 in 2022. Release 16 was added by Qualcomm to the Snapdragon X65 in 2021 as well as the X70 modem. However, Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro phones are equipped with Samsung’s Exynos 5300 modem that supports Release 15.

Samsung, however, has mentioned that the Exynos 5300 modem can support Release 16, and hence, Pixel 7 series can get the same later this year. A recent Android 13 QPR issue tracker via Cstark also reads the same. It says that the Pixel 7 modem is capable of Release 16 and is expected to be reused for the Pixel 8.

Qualcomm earlier explained how Release 16 is better than Release 15. It shared that the second 3GPP 5G standard comes with a bunch of improvements to the foundation of the 5G system, including its coverage, capacity, latency, power, mobility, reliability, and more. It says that Release 16 supports full-power uplink to offer improved coverage at the cell edge.

Meanwhile, Qualcomm also announced the Snapdragon X75 modem with support for Release 17 and 18 earlier this month. Every new 3GPP release improves MIMO (multiple-input, multiple-output) performance and efficiency. The Snapdragon X75 with support for Release 17 and 18 will offer 10 Gigabit 5G peak download and 3.5 Gbps peak upload speeds, as well as high-speed coverage and power efficiency.

India to Be Major Telecom Exporter in 3 Years; 4G and 5G Stack ‘Now Ready’, Communications Minister Says

India has proven its mettle with its indigenous 4G/5G technology stack which is “now ready” and the country is poised to emerge as a major telecom technology exporter to the world in the coming three years, Communications Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said on Saturday. Speaking at the Economic Times Global Business Summit 2023, Vaishnaw, who is also the Minister for Railways, categorically said there is no programme for the privatisation of the national transporter.

The 5G services were launched on October 1, 2022, and within a span of 100 days have been rolled out in 200-plus cities. The sheer speed of rollout has been appreciated by industry leaders globally and is being described in many international forums as the “fastest deployment happening anywhere in the world”, he said.

Vaishnaw highlighted the population-scale solutions being tested on India stack, across platforms such as payments, healthcare and identity. Each of these platforms is powerful in itself, but together become a dynamic force that can solve “any major problem in the world”.

The minister said India is set to emerge as a telecom technology exporter to the world in the next three years.

“Today there are two Indian companies that are exporting to the world…telecom gear. In the coming three years, we will see India as a major telecom technology exporter in the world,” Vaishnaw said.

The minister talked of the rapid strides taken by India in developing its own 4G and 5G technology stack, a feat that caught the attention of the world.

“The stack is now ready. It was initially tested for 1 million simultaneous calls, then for 5 million, and now it has been tested for 10 million simultaneous calls,” he said terming it a “phenomenal success”.

At least 9-10 countries want to try it out, he added.

The minister gave a presentation outlining key initiatives under his three ministries of telecom, IT and Railways.

For Railways, the focus is on transforming passenger experience, he said as he presented slides on how railways is redeveloping stations and terminals (New Delhi, Ahmedabad, Kanpur, Jaipur among others) with modern and futuristic design blueprint, and in the process creating new urban spaces while also preserving rich heritage.

The minister also gave an overview on the Vande Bharat train, the indigenous train protection system Kavach and progress on the bullet train project.

To a question on the past talks around private freight rail corridors to boost logistics, the minister said “there is no programme for Railway privatisation”.

“In a country where we have 1.35 billion people, 8 billion people moving every year on Railways, we thought that it is prudent to learn from the experience of others, and keep it within the Government set-up,” Vaishnaw said.

To another query on dedicated freight corridor for foodgrains, the minister explained that when it comes to transport economics it is important not to divide assets between different applications.

“Today, the thought process has got very refined, and we are adding close to 4500 km of network every year, which amounts to 12 km of new tracks per day. So we have to increase the capacity to such a large extent that there is enough capacity for foodgrains, enough for coal, small parcels, and every kind of cargo,” he said.

While Railways had been consistently losing market share over the last 50-60 years, it has started clawing it back.

“The lowest point was 27 per cent. I am happy to share that from the 27 per cent level, last year Railways increased to 28 per cent, this year we are doing close to 29-29.5 per cent, and in the coming 2-3 years Railways will go towards 35 per cent market share,” he said.

People will choose between transport via road, railways or air based on the distance to be travelled, and “there will be enough for everybody”. “The country will have enough for everybody, is my point. Up to 250 kilometres road is very good, 250 to 1000 kilometres railway is the ideal mode. Beyond 1000 kilometres air will be the ideal mode. So there will be enough for everybody,” the minister said.

Jio 5G Network Services Launched in 50 More Cities as Rollout Expands to 184 Cities in India

Reliance Jio on Tuesday announced the largest launch of its True 5G services across 50 cities in the country. With this, Jio users across 184 cities are now enjoying the fifth-generation mobile services. According to the company’s statement, these 50 cities are in states including Andhra Pradesh, Assam, Chhattisgarh, Goa, Haryana, Jharkhand, Karnataka, Maharashtra, Odisha, Puducherry, Punjab, Rajasthan and Tamil Nadu.

Jio users in these cities will be invited to the Jio Welcome Offer to experience unlimited data at up to 1Gbps speeds at no additional cost, starting on Tuesday, the statement said.

Jio spokesperson said, “We are thrilled to launch Jio True 5G services in 50 additional cities across 17 states and Union Territories, taking the total count to 184 cities. This is by far one of the largest rollouts of 5G services, not just in India, but anywhere in the world.”

“We have stepped up the speed and intensity of True 5G roll-out across the nation because we want every Jio user to enjoy the transformational benefits of Jio True 5G technology in the new year 2023. The entire nation will be able to enjoy and benefit from Jio True 5G services by December 2023,” the spokesperson said.

The cities of Chittoor, Kadapa, Narasaraopet, Ongole, Rajamahendravaram, Srikakulam and Vizianagaram in Andhra Pradesh; Nagaon in Assam; Bilaspur, Korba and Rajnandgaon in Chhattisgarh; Panaji in Goa; Ambala, Bahadurgarh, Hisar, Karnal, Panipat, Rohtak, Sirsa and Sonipat in Haryana, have access to Jio 5G services now, according to the statement. It also added that Haryana Home Minister Anil Vij inaugurated Jio True 5G in Haryana circle on Tuesday.

Jio 5G services are now also live in Dhanbad in Jharkhand; Bagalkote, Chikkamagaluru, Hassan, Mandya and Tumakuru in Karnataka; Alappuzha in Kerala; Kolhapur, Nanded-Waghala, Sangli in Maharashtra; Balasore, Baripada, Bhadrak, Jharsuguda, Puri and Sambalpur in Odisha, the statement said.

The cities in Puducherry; Amritsar, Bikaner, Kota in Rajasthan; Dharmapuri, Erode and Thoothukudi in Tamil Nadu; Nalgonda in Telangana, and Jhansi, Aligarh, Moradabad, Saharanpur in Uttar Pradesh, and Asansol and Durgapur in West Bengal now have access to Jio 5G services. According to the statement, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla will inaugurate Jio True 5G in Kota.

The spokesperson also said, “We are grateful to the State Governments of Andhra Pradesh, Assam, Chhattisgarh, Goa, Haryana, Jharkhand, Karnataka, Kerala, Maharashtra, Odisha, Puducherry, Punjab, Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu, Telangana, Uttar Pradesh, and West Bengal for their continuous support in our quest to digitise every region.”

Jio True 5G Services Launched in Gwalior, Jabalpur, Ludhiana, Siliguri

Reliance Jio has launched 5G services in Gwalior, Jabalpur, Ludhiana and Siliguri, taking the total number of cities to 72. Jio has announced plans to launch its “True 5G” services in every town, taluk of India by the end of December 2023.

“The launch strengthens Jio True 5G coverage in Madhya Pradesh, close to unveiling of coveted events like Pravasi Bharatiya Divas and Invest MP – Global Investor Summit at Indore. With the launch, Reliance Jio has now become the first and the only operator in MP to launch 5G services across all prominent large cities of MP, including the capital city, Bhopal, and Indore,” the company said in a statement.

It is the first and the only operator to launch 5G services in Gwalior, Jabalpur and Ludhiana.

At present, Jio is offering unlimited access to 5G data to select customers in the city where it has rolled out its 5G services.

“The Jio True 5G launch reaffirms Jio’s commitment and provides advanced technology support for the upcoming 17th edition of the Pravasi Bharatiya Divas and Invest MP — Global Investor Summit being held in Indore in January 2023,” the statement said.

Meanwhile, on Thursday, the telecom company rolled out its 5G services in Odisha — starting with Bhubaneswar and Cuttack — in presence of Union Minister of Communications Ashwini Vaishnaw and Union Minister of Education, and Skill Development and Entrepreneurship Dharmendra Pradhan. “The temple city Bhubaneswar and silver city Cuttack will be the first cities to get Jio True 5G services starting today,” Reliance Jio said in a release. The launch came at a time when the city gears up to host FIH Men’s Hockey World Cup later this month.

Airtel 5G Network Rollout Expands to Select Areas in Rohtak, Hissar: All Details

Airtel on Friday announced the launch of its 5G services in Hissar and Rohtak, expanding the reach of the new age hi-speed network in Haryana. Airtel’s 5G services are already live in Gurugram and Panipat.

“Hissar and Rohtak gets ultrafast Airtel 5G Plus services in addition to Gurugram and Panipat,” the company said in a statement.

Airtel says that its ‘5G Plus’ services will be available to customers in a phased manner as the company continues to construct its network and complete the rollout.

Customers with 5G-enabled devices will experience the high-speed Airtel 5G network at no extra cost until the rollout is more widespread.

Airtel 5G Plus will boost the entire portfolio of services that Airtel offers. Besides, it will allow superfast access to high-definition video streaming, gaming, multiple chatting, instant uploading of photos, among others.

Tarun Virmani, Chief Operating Officer – Haryana, Bharti Airtel noted that customers in the two cities can experience ultra-fast network and get speeds up to 20-30 times faster than the current 4G speeds.

Earlier this week, Airtel announced that it had begun rolling out its 5G services to select areas in Indore.

“Currently operational at Vijay Nagar, Rasoma chowk, Bombay Hospital Square, Radisson square, Khajrana area, Sadar Bazaar, Gita Bhawan, Panchsheel Nagar, Abhinandan Nagar, Patrakar colony, Yeshwant road, Phoenix Citadel mall and few other select locations, Airtel will augment its network making its services available across the city in due course of time,” the company said in a statement at the time.

Last month, Airtel announced the launch of its 5G network services in Jammu and Srinagar, which followed rollouts in select areas of Visakhapatnam, Ahmedabad, Gandhinagar, Imphal, Shimla, Lucknow and Pune.

Google Pixel Series to Get 5G Support in Q1 2023, Company Working With Indian Carriers: Report

5G is here in India as major network carriers roll out the high-speed internet service across the country. Most 5G capable smartphones in the country have also received updates from their manufacturers to enable 5G network support. However, Google Pixel users have been made to wait on that front. Google’s 5G capable handsets have not yet received an update that would enable the service on the phones. That is said to change soon as Google has reportedly confirmed that 5G support will be rolled out soon.

Google has reportedly said that 5G support will be rolling out to eligible Google Pixel smartphones in the first quarter of 2023. In an email response to CNBCTV18.com, Google said that it will roll out updates that will enable 5G on Pixel 6a, Pixel 7, and Pixel 7 Pro handsets in India.

““We have been actively working with Indian carriers on the various requirements that go into provisioning 5G and look forward to rolling this out for Pixel 7, Pixel 7 Pro and Pixel 6a in Q1 2023,” Google reportedly said. Notably, most major smartphone manufacturers, including Apple and Samsung, have already unlocked 5G support on their smartphones here.

Apple‘s iOS 16.2 update added 5G network support on iPhone 12 and newer models in the country earlier this month. The update enabled 5G connectivity for iPhone users on Jio and Airtel networks.

In addition to Samsung, manufacturers like OnePlus and Oppo also rolled out 5G support for compatible Android handsets in India. This week, Xiaomi also announced it was pushing software updates to eligible Xiaomi and Redmi phones to offer Reliance Jio’s 5G service.

Both Airtel and Jio have been rolling out 5G network in different parts of the country. On Wednesday, Jio announced its largest multi-state rollout of the service, launching it in 11 cities, namely Lucknow, Trivandrum, Mysuru, Nashik, Aurangabad, Chandigarh, Mohali, Panchkula, Zirakpur, Kharar, and Derabassi.

Last month, Airtel announced that over 10 lakh unique users had joined Airtel 5G network in less than a month after it rolled out services in various parts of the country. Airtel 5G is now available in multiple cities, including Jammu, Srinagar, Visakhapatnam, Ahmedabad, Gandhinagar, Imphal, Shimla, Patna, Lucknow, Guwahati, Pune, Gurugram, and more.

5G Services in India to Attract Rs. 1.5 Lakh Crore in Investments in 2023, Tariff Hikes Likely: Report

From connecting people with 5G services to lowering the cost of operations, the country’s revitalised telecom sector is witnessing the bloom of reforms, and is set to attract more than Rs 1.5 lakh crore investments to build up networks in the new year.

Once the poster boy of India’s growth story, then a debt-laden segment that saw many players withering away and now riding the wave of reforms as well as big-ticket investments, the telecom sector turned a new chapter in 2022.

While the Adani group is yet to unveil its full-fledged plan for the telecom business, Reliance Industries Chairman Mukesh Ambani has committed Rs. 2 lakh crore investment for rolling out a 5G network across the country by December 2023.

“It has been an exciting year because of the launch of 5G, a much-awaited technology for 4-5 years. This is a big step forward. We look forward to a robust rollout of 5G next year because this year is just the beginning.

“We are all working on use cases. We are telling state governments, ministries, startups and innovators to come out with innovative use cases in the Indian context, which will unlock businesses and will also solve some public problems, some challenges,” Telecom Secretary K Rajaraman told PTI.

He also said the government will continue to take measures that will lower the cost of operations for telecom operators, a move that will result in higher margins for the sector, which had been reeling under a debt burden for more than a decade.

Reliance Jio has committed Rs 87,946.93 crore for the spectrum that it has to pay over a period of 20 years, leaving a balance of Rs 1.12 lakh crore. While the company had invested a partial amount in building its own 5G core, it will invest the majority of the Rs 1.12 lakh in capex for 5G in 2023, according to sources.

Bharti Airtel is expected to invest in the range of Rs 27,000-28,000 crore and state-owned BSNL around Rs 16,000 crore in 2023 for rolling out an indigenously developed 4G network by TCS and C-DoT-led consortium. Later, the system will be upgraded to 5G.

Together, investments worth more than Rs 1.5 lakh crore are expected in the telecom sector.

COAI Director General SP Kochhar said the structural and procedural reforms in the telecom sector approved by the government last year such as e-KYC, doing away with Spectrum Usage Charge (SUC) for spectrum acquired in a future auction, 100 per cent FDI under the automatic route as well as rationalisation of bank guarantee, Adjusted Gross Revenue (AGR), interest rates and penalties, and facilitating Right of Way (RoW) have positively impacted the sector in 2022.

Digital Infrastructure Providers Association Director General TR Dua said that most state governments have followed reforms led by the Centre and came up with telecom infrastructure-friendly policies this year.

Recently, Minister of State for Telecom Devusinh Chauhan informed Parliament that telecom operators are installing on an average of 2,500 base stations per week for providing 5G services in the country and 20,980 mobile base stations were installed as of November 26.

Telecom gear majors — Nokia and Ericsson — have ramped up their manufacturing in India. The government has also received investment commitments of Rs 4,115 crore from 42 firms shortlisted under the Production Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme for making telecom gears.

Nokia said it is witnessing the world’s fastest rollout of the 5G network in India.

“In 2023, we hope to see continued government support in enabling the digital ecosystem to truly tap the benefits of the socio-economic applications of 5G technology. 2023 is also expected to witness wider adoption of private networks by enterprises and businesses for enhanced efficiency and security,” a Nokia India spokesperson said.

Ericsson’s MD, India & Head of Networks, Southeast Asia, Oceania and India, Nitin Bansal said that enhanced Mobile Broadband (eMBB) and Fixed Wireless Access (FWA) are expected to be the initial 5G use cases in India. This technology will help to bridge the digital divide by addressing the concern of limited fixed broadband penetration levels and improving the data experience while on the move.

Tech Mahindra President, Communications, Media and Entertainment Business, and CEO, Network Services, Manish Vyas said 5G will be used to develop revolutionary applications and innovative use cases in industries, such as manufacturing, healthcare, BFSI, and autonomous driving.

“We see 5G for Enterprise (5G4E) as our next growth strategy, and we are already doing multiple pilots on it across the world,” he said.

IDEMIA India, Senior Vice President, Rahul Tandon said as India ushers in 5G connectivity it opens up many new capabilities to enhance productivity and safety of not only online transactions but Machine2Machine (M2M) transactions as well.

While telecom operators are investing billions in building a 5G network, a senior Airtel official said there are no applications as of now that can help companies monetise 5G.

“5G is helping in offloading traffic from the 4G network. 5G is a very efficient and better technology but at present the applications like video, gaming etc are working well on 4G. We are yet to see any applications that can specifically help in monetising 5G,” the official said.

He also said the company expects growth to come from customers upgrading their service from 2G to 4G, pre-paid to post-paid and post-paid to home broadband, and tariff hikes.

The annual tariff hike by telecom operators — Bharti Airtel, Vodafone Idea and Jio — in the range of 18-42 per cent has brought the companies a sustainable level of Average Revenue Per User (ARPU) situation in 2022.

Vodafone Idea had taken lead in November 2019 to raise mobile services rates by up to 42 per cent. Bharti Airtel and Reliance Jio followed VIL in raising tariffs.

The tariff hike in 2019 was after a gap of about five years. The data prices had nosedived by 95 per cent to Rs 11.78 per GB in 2017 from Rs 269 per GB in 2014.

Bharti Airtel is running a pilot to increase its entry-level mobile plan by about 57 per cent. The company has increased the minimum recharge price for a 28-day mobile phone service plan by about 57 per cent to Rs 155 in Haryana and Odisha.

A company official said it will take a look at the result of the tariff increase in another six weeks to decide on hiking the tariffs across India.

While VIL has been able to sail through 2022, the year 2023 is likely to be a make-or-break year for the company as the debt-ridden company awaits the government to pick around 33 per cent stake under the scheme to convert interest dues into equity.

A note by JM Financial in October 2021 said that VIL will need to have an APRU of at least Rs 190-200 by March 2023 to survive but the company is far from the mark and is struggling to check subscriber churn.

5G Services in Odisha Will Launch Before 2023 Republic Day, Says Ashwini Vaishnaw

Asserting that the Centre has sanctioned Rs.. 5,600 crore for telecom services in Odisha this fiscal, Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw on Thursday said 5G services will be launched in the eastern state before the Republic Day celebrations next year. In an apparent reference to the ruling BJD in the state, the minister also said, “now, no one can make an allegation that the Centre is neglecting Odisha’s telecom sector”.

“The Modi government has sanctioned a total of Rs. 5,600 crore for telecom services in Odisha in the 2022-23 fiscal, and 5G services will be launched in the state before the Republic Day celebrations on January 26, 2023,” he said.

Vaishnaw, the minister of railways, communications, electronics and information technology, said a survey was recently conducted in all villages of Odisha where mobile towers are not available.

“Prime Minister Narendra Modi had directed officials to ensure high-quality 4G and 5G services in all villages,” the minister said.

Vaishnaw had in October said that 5G services would be available in at least four cities of Odisha by March 2023, and 80 percent area of the state will have access to the upgraded network by the end of the next year.

PM Modi had on October 1 launched the 5G services that promise to provide ultra high-speed internet on mobile phones.

Vaishnaw was speaking at a foundation stone laying ceremony for the redevelopment of the Bhubaneswar railway station.

Union Coal Minister Pralhad Joshi, who was also present in the programme, claimed that Odisha has substantially gained from the central government’s policy for auctioning of mines.

“The state’s revenue from the mining sector has touched Rs. 50,000 crore from around Rs. 5,000 crore in 2014-15,” he pointed out.

He also alleged that the states were “unable to garner adequate revenue from mining operations earlier” as a policy of ‘first come first served’ was followed.

Under the District Mineral Foundation (DMF), Odisha gets Rs. 15,000 crore per year, Joshi said, adding that the fund can be utilised for the development of mine areas and the welfare of the poor and tribal people.

The state has also been allocated around Rs. 10,000 crore in the budget for railway infrastructure development in 2022-23, Vaishnaw said.

“The Modi government has raised the allocation for railways in Odisha to Rs. 10,000 crore per annum from only Rs. 800 crore during the UPA regime,” he said, claiming that “critics have no reasons to make the allegation of central negligence to the state’s telecom and railway sectors”.

The minister also said that “railway projects will make progress if the state government cooperates and provides required land”.

Earlier this week, the state, in a cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik, had approved a proposal to provide 2,000 square feet of land each at 1,687 places to BSNL for 30 years at Rs. 1 per site per annum without any premium and incidental fees.

It will help provide 4G connectivity in 1,792 villages, Odisha Chief Secretary SC Mohapatra had said.

Xiaomi, Redmi Smartphones Get Jio True 5G Support With New Software Update

Xiaomi India on Tuesday announced its partnership with Reliance Jio to offer the telco’s ‘True 5G’ experience to its consumers.

Smartphone models supporting the Standalone (SA) network have received a software update to work seamlessly on Reliance Jio‘s network, according to a statement.

The enabled devices include Mi 11 Ultra 5G, Xiaomi 12 Pro 5G, Xiaomi 11T Pro 5G, Redmi Note 11 Pro+ 5G, Xiaomi 11 Lite NE 5G, Redmi Note 11T 5G, Redmi 11 Prime 5G, Redmi Note 10T 5G, Mi 11X 5G, Mi 11X Pro 5G, Redmi K50i 5G, Xiaomi 11i 5G, and Xiaomi 11i HyperCharge 5G.

“Xiaomi India…today announced its partnership with Reliance Jio to offer a ‘True 5G’ experience to their consumers…All Xiaomi 5G Smartphones to support Jio True 5G network,” the statement said.

The association will enable Xiaomi and Redmi smartphone users to access the telco’s 5G connectivity and stream uninterrupted videos, enjoy high-resolution video calls and play low-latency gaming on their devices.

Users would need to change the preferred network type to 5G in their Xiaomi and Redmi smartphone settings to access Jio’s True 5G Standalone (SA) network.

“Xiaomi’s smartphones like Redmi K50i and Redmi Note 11T 5G have undergone meticulous testing with Reliance Jio’s True 5G network to ensure unhindered connectivity that can truly help elevate users’ experience. Today, most 5G-enabled devices from Xiaomi and Redmi work best with Reliance Jio’s True 5G network,” the statement said.

iOS 16.2, iPadOS 16.2 Updates Rolled out with Apple Music Sing, Freeform App; iPhone Gets 5G Support in India

Apple iOS 16.2 and iPadOS 16.2 software updates are now available and rolling out for compatible iPhone and iPad devices. This comes after a period of beta testing, which introduced new features along with a host of patches that address over a dozen security issues on the devices. The stable iOS 16.2 and the iPadOS 16.2 software updates will notably bring the Apple Music Sing feature, the Freeform collaboration app, and Apple’s Advanced Data Protection, which adds end-to-end encryption to multiple iCloud services. The new update also enables 5G network support on compatible iPhones for users in India.

The iOS and iPadOS 16.2 update bring the new Freeform app to Apple devices. According to the Cupertino-based tech giant, the app will let users organise their work or creative projects on a single whiteboard to share and collaborate with other people. Freeform will also allow users to add files and work with others while on a FaceTime call.

Additionally, the Apple Music Sing feature is also available to Apple Music subscribers on compatible devices, adding a karaoke-like singalong ability for select tracks in the Apple Music app. The iOS 16.2 update also introduces Advanced Data Protection, bringing end-to-end encryption to iCloud backups, photos, and more.

For Apple users in India, the new update will notably add 5G network support for iPhone users. 5G capability is available on iPhone 12 and newer models, but a software update was needed to enable the advanced connectivity in India after Airtel and Jio rolled out 5G services recently.

The new update now enables 5G connectivity for users on Jio and Airtel networks. These feature updates were all rolled out to beta testers as part of the iOS 16.2 RC update last week.

On top of the features, the update also includes multiple security patches that fix known vulnerabilities on Apple devices. The patches address security issues with Accounts, iTunes Store, Photos, Safari, and Weather apps, among others. According to a 9to5Mac report, the 16.2 update also includes Rapid Security Response, which brings security patches to iOS without needing to update to a new version of the OS itself. The report further adds that the security patches are also coming to iOS 15 users who haven’t or cannot update to iOS 16.
