5G Enabled on iPhones in India: How to Activate 5G on Airtel and Jio on Your iPhone

Apple has just announced the arrival of official 5G support on iPhones in India, starting at 11:30pm on December 13, for subscribers who have Jio and Airtel connections. With the release of iOS 16.2, users in India will be able to take advantage of 5G network speed in areas where coverage is available. 5G support will be activated on all compatible iPhone models released in 2020 or later. These include the iPhone 12, iPhone 13, and iPhone 14 families as well as the latest iPhone SE model. Users who currently have a 4G SIM and data plan will not need to change anything, as Airtel and Jio SIMs are compatible.

Which iPhones are 5G compatible?

Here is a complete list of 5G-enabled iPhone models:

How can I activate 5G on my iPhone in India?

On your iPhone, open the Settings app and tap General, then Software Update. You will see the option to download iOS 16.2. Accept the terms and conditions, and download the update. Note: It is always advisable to back up all your data before installing a software update.

Once the update has been installed and your iPhone has restarted, you might see a new 5G status icon in the notification area (if Wi-Fi is not currently active). If not, you can open the settings app and tap to Cellular > Cellular Data Options. If you are using two active SIMs, you can choose which one you want to use 5G through.

You can leave the default Auto mode enabled if you want your iPhone to dynamically adjust your connection speed to help save battery power. In this mode, your device will switch to 4G LTE when you aren’t doing anything that requires high-speed data, as the older standard requires less power. Switching to 5G On in the Cellular Data Options settings will force your device to always use 5G when coverage is available. Alternatively, switching to LTE will ignore 5G, and could be useful to prolong battery life.

iPhone 5G update in India: iOS 16.2

Other than enabling 5G support on iPhones, iOS 16.2 and iPadOS 16.2 which released at the same time, introduce a few new features and include bug fixes and security updates. There’s a new app called Freeform, which allows users to scribble ideas and diagrams, and collaborate with others. This app was demonstrated prior to the release of iOS 16 earlier this year, but is only now being rolled out. It will be available on Macs as well as iPads and iPhones, and users can sketch using Apple Pencil on compatible iPads.

Apple Music Sing is a new karaoke mode that allows users to sing along to their favourite songs, either solo or duetting with the original singer, as lyrics are displayed on screen. The Emergency SOS Via Satellite feature, which is exclusive to the iPhone 14 family as of now, will also roll out in supported regions. Apple notes improvements to the lock screen UI, most notably the option to change how notifications are displayed and disable your homescreen wallpaper on the iPhone 14 Pro series’ always-on display.

iPhone users will no longer be able to allow their devices to receive files via AirDrop from strangers all the time. A 10-minute window was introduced in China a few weeks ago, and is now being applied around the world. Apple says this will prevent spam, although critics have noted that it could also prevent information being shared ad-hoc, such as during protest movements.

Other miscellaneous changes include multiplayer support over FaceTime for Game Centre games, and a game Activity widget that lets users see what friends are playing; new Sleep and Medications widgets; the ability to find photos in Messages by describing their content in words; improved iCloud Private Relay controls; improved crash detection on the iPhone 14 series; and an iCloud data syncing bug fix.

Samsung Acquires Licence for Key 5G Technologies From Huawei: Report

Huawei was put on an export blacklist by the US government in 2019, which restricted its access to critical technologies of US origin. The company then made a shift towards patent licensing, reportedly expecting to earn $1.3 billion (roughly Rs. 1,075 crore) between 2019 and 2021. A recent report mentions that Huawei has licensed key 5G technologies to Samsung, likely to be related to the 5G modems featured in Samsung handsets. In addition, Huawei and Oppo have also announced a global cross-patent licensing agreement, as per the report.

According to a Nikkei Asia report (via Sammobile), Samsung has acquired licences for key 5G technologies from Huawei. These are believed to be intended for the 5G modems on Samsung smartphones, or Samsung Networks’ 5G telecom infrastructure. In addition, Huawei has also announced the signing of a global patent cross-licensing agreement with Oppo, which is said to cover 5G, Wi-Fi, and audio-video codecs.

Huawei received a massive blow to its smartphone business when the US government under the then President Donal Trump blacklisted the company in 2019. The company’s revenue fell by 2.2 percent in 2022 as per a recent report, due to new restrictions put in by the current US administration under President Biden.

The Chinese tech giant has reportedly stepped up the development of network technology to reduce its vulnerability to such sanctions. Oppo and Samsung are believed to be among 20 firms to have agreed to license Huawei’s technologies and patents in recent years. In November, the US Federal Communications Commission (FCC) banned the import or sale of communications equipment from Huawei and ZTE.

As previously mentioned, Huawei expected to earn about $1.3 billion (roughly Rs. 1,075 crore) between 2019 and 2021 in revenue from patent licensing. The company is said to have earned around $2.5 (roughly 200) for every smartphone that used 5G technology developed by it.

Reliance Jio Becomes First Telecom Operator to Roll Out 5G Services Across Major Regions in Delhi-NCR

Reliance Jio on Friday announced that it is the only operator to provide its 5G services — True-5G — across the Delhi-NCR region, including Delhi, Gurugram, Noida, Ghaziabad, Faridabad and other major locations. The telecom firm said it was rolling out the most-advanced True-5G network at a rapid pace and was covering major parts of this geography.

A Jio spokesperson said, “Covering majority of the National Capital and NCR region is a matter of pride for us… The reason Jio engineers are working round the clock to deliver True5G to every Indian is because of the transformational power of this technology and the exponential benefits it can deliver to every citizen.”

The telco said that this transformational network would be present across all important localities and areas including, but not limited to most residential areas, hospitals, schools, colleges and universities, government buildings, malls, and markets. It is also said it will be available in high-footfall areas such as tourist spots and hotels, tech-parks, roads, highways and metros.

The telecom firm said lakhs of Jio users in the Delhi-National Capital Region (NCR) are already enjoying the Jio Welcome Offer, in which they experience unlimited data at up to 1 gigabit per second (Gbps+) speeds at no additional cost.

The telecom firm also said this was possible because of stand-alone 5G architecture with zero dependency on 4G network, of the largest and best mix of 5G spectrum across 700MHz, 3500MHz, and 26GHz bands and that it seamlessly combines this fifth-generation mobile (5G) frequencies into a single robust “data highway”, using an advanced tech called Carrier Aggregation.

It added more Jio users in Delhi-NCR will continue to be invited to the Jio Welcome Offer.

Samsung India Sells Smartphones Worth Rs. 14,400 Crore During Festive Season

Samsung India sold mobile phones worth Rs. 14,400 crore between September and October and recorded 99 percent growth in the premium category smartphones in the first three quarters of 2022, a senior company official said on Friday.

Samsung India senior director and head of product marketing Aditya Babbar told PTI that the company recorded a 178 percent jump in sales in value terms of 5G smartphones between January and September 2022 on a year-over-year basis.

Samsung had a record festive season this year. This was an outstanding performance on account of great revenue which we posted of Rs. 14,400 crore in a 60-day period starting September 1,” he said.

Without disclosing the exact percentage, Babbar said that the growth was in the healthy double-digit compared to sales during the festive period last year.

He said that Samsung Finance Plus was one of the key contributors to the growth and the transaction on the platform tripled to over 10 lakh during the festive season.

“The growth has been much better in tier 2 and 3 towns but it has done phenomenally well in urban centres as well,” Babbar said.

The company recorded 99 percent growth in value terms in the premium segment smartphones priced above Rs. 30,000 apiece in January-September 2022 compared to the same period last year.

“Samsung is the fastest growing premium segment brand in India on the back of S22 and Foldables phones. Our growth has been 99 percent in Rs. 30,000 plus category versus January-September last year,” Babbar said.

According to Counterpoint Research’s latest report, Samsung was the second largest smartphone seller in India with an 18 percent market share in terms of volume in the July-September quarter and remained the top-selling smartphone in the country.

The company claims that its overall mobile phone business grew by 20 percent and has a 22 percent revenue market share in the first nine months of 2022.

“We have also been the number 1 brand in terms of value since 2013. Consumers are adopting more 5G and premium phones. We are at the forefront of the democratisation of 5G with a Rs. 10,900 device. We have 20 devices which are enabled with 5G. We are number 1 in the 5G brand for the last four quarters,” Babbar said.

He also said that the company will be rolling out software updates across all 5G devices by November 15 and most of the devices have already started supporting 5G services.

Airtel 5G Users Cross 1 Million Mark Less Than a Month After 5G Rollout: All Details

Airtel 5G unique users for the telecom operator have crossed the 1 million mark, just weeks after it launched the high-speed services in India. The company said it achieved this milestone in less than 30 days of its commercial launch of high-speed 5G services. Last month, Airtel announced the advent of its 5G services in Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Siliguri, Nagpur and Varanasi. Services in these cities are being rolled out in a phased manner as the company continues to construct its network and complete the roll out, the telecom operator said in a statement on Wednesday.

“These are early days but the response from customers have been very encouraging. Our network is being built every day even as all 5G devices are now capable of working on the Airtel 5G Plus network barring a few exceptions which should also be done in the coming weeks,” said Randeep Sekhon, CTO at Bharti Airtel.

“We will continue to advance our network with a vision to connect the entire country,” Sekhon added.

Airtel claims it initiated the 5G trials in 2021 and became the first operator to commercially launch 5G in the country.

Customers with 5G smart phones can enjoy the high-speed Airtel 5G Plus on their existing data plans until the roll out is more widespread, and there is no need to change the SIM as the existing Airtel 4G SIM is 5G enabled, according to the operator.

5G connectivity

5G, the fifth generation of mobile network connectivity, is capable of transmitting a large set of data at a very rapid speed.

In comparison to 3G and 4G, 5G has a very low latency which will enhance user experiences in various sectors. Low latency describes the efficiency of processing a very high volume of data messages with a minimal delay.

The large-scale 5G rollout is also expected to bring more development in remote data monitoring sectors such as mining, warehousing, telemedicine, and manufacturing, among others.

Samsung Galaxy A14 5G Design, Case Renders Leaked Ahead of Launch

Samsung Galaxy A14 5G is expected to launch soon. The company is expected to launch its new budget 5G smartphone in India and other markets later this year. Samsung has not confirmed the Galaxy A14 5G launch date yet. Meanwhile, a new leak of alleged Galaxy A14 5g cases has revealed the design of the Samsung Galaxy A-series smartphone. The images uploaded by tipster Sudhansu Ambhore, citing case makers, reveal the Samsung Galaxy A14 5G’s design from all sides.

The Samsung Galaxy A14 5G will launch as a successor to the Samsung Galaxy A13 5G, which did not make it to India. Samsung is likely to make some minor tweaks in the design of the Galaxy A14 5G. The smartphone is said to sport a flat frame design, similar to the Galaxy S22 series. The case renders further show the front and back of the device, which matches previously leaked renders.

The new case renders show three circular cutouts for the camera sensors, next to which is an LED flash module. The tipster did not reveal any details about the camera specifications of the phone. However, looking at the 2022 (and possibly 2023) smartphone trends, it would not be surprising to see the Galaxy A14 5G get a 50-megapixel primary camera sensor along with two 2-megapixel sensors for depth sensing and macro photography.

On the front, the Galaxy A14 is said to sport a water-drop notch for the selfie camera. Samsung is likely to call the notch its Infinity-U display. The handset’s volume and power buttons appear to be positioned on the right edge, whereas the left side is completely flush. The power button is likely to double up a fingerprint scanner.

At the bottom, the Samsung Galaxy A14 5G seems to sport a 3.5mm headphone jack, a USB Type-C port, and a speaker grille. Since it is a budget offering, the 5G smartphone from Samsung is unlikely to get a dual-speaker setup. The leaked case renders show the phone in its green colour option. We can expect Samsung to launch the phone in more colourways, including the classic Black and White options.

Some specifications of the Samsung Galaxy A14 5G were also suggested alongside the design renders. The phone is said to sport a 6.8-inch full-HD+ LCD display. The Galaxy A14 is said to measure 167.7 x 78.7 x 9.3mm. More details of the handset should be available in the coming months.

Another recent report had suggested that several new Samsung Galaxy-A series phones had entered the testing phase. Considering telecom operators are rolling out 5G networks across different cities in India, we can expect Samsung to launch the Galaxy A14 5G in India in the coming months.

Jio 5G Services Launched in India Ahead of Diwali Festive Season: All Details

Reliance Jio 5G services were officially launched in India on Saturday. As announced two months back, the telecom operator on Saturday has finally launched the new-age high-speed services in the country. This year, the telco aims to launch 5G services in major cities such as Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata and Chennai.

The telecom operator intends to expand its 5G network to each and every town, tehsil and taluka across the country by December 2023, Reliance chairman Mukesh Ambani stated on August 29 while announcing the 5G launch in India.

Earlier this month, Reliance Jio started beta trials of 5G services in the national capital along with three other cities — Mumbai, Kolkata and Varanasi — with users getting download speed of over 1 Gbps.

According to the company, people will gradually start getting 5G signals in the entire city in a phased manner. The company has branded its stand-alone 5G technology as ‘Jio True 5G’.

The telecom company on Friday posted a 28 percent year-on-year rise in its net profit for the September quarter at Rs. 4,518 crore, as subscriber additions and ARPU boosted realisations.

Its net profit stood at Rs. 3,528 crore in the same period previous fiscal, the telco said in a regulatory filing. The revenue from operations of Reliance Jio Infocomm (RJIL) increased 20.2 percent to Rs. 22,521 crore for the just-ended quarter from Rs. 18,735 crore in the year-ago period.
