Huawei, ZTE Ban Would Impact Mobile Networks in Germany, Fears German Ministry

A ban on certain components by Chinese companies Huawei and ZTE could have a significant impact on Germany’s mobile network if they have to be replaced on a larger scale, according to a German economy ministry letter seen by Reuters.

The German government is currently carrying out a review of telecom tech suppliers which it says is not directed at specific manufacturers.

If extensive changes are required as a result of a ban or regulation, “there is likely to be significant impact on the operation of mobile networks and the fulfilment of coverage requirements,” said the letter to the Bundestag lower house of parliament’s economic committee.

The precise impact on mobile operators and other economic players is not possible to assess, the ministry added, as it depends on individual decisions as well as transition periods.

The government’s review could lead to operators being asked to remove and replace components already built into 5G networks. Under current legislation, they would not receive compensation.

Critics of Huawei and ZTE say that their close links to Beijing’s security services mean that embedding them in mobile networks could give Chinese spies and even saboteurs access to essential infrastructure.

Huawei, ZTE and China’s government reject such claims, saying they are motivated by a protectionist desire to support non-Chinese rivals.

It was reported a few days back that Germany plans to ban telecoms operators from using certain components made by Chinese companies Huawei and ZTE in 5G networks in a potentially significant move to address security concerns.

The German ban could include components already built into the networks, requiring operators to remove and replace them, Zeit Online reported, citing sources.

India Acquired 100 Patents for 6G Technology After Fast Rollout of 5G Network: IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw

Indian scientists, engineers and academicians have acquired 100 patents for 6G technology, IT and Telecom Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said on Thursday.

While speaking at the Bharat Startup Summit organised by the PHD Chamber of Commerce, the minister said India is taking a leap in 5G technology with the fastest rollout of networks in the world.

“Electronics is very complex, but despite the complexity, our scientists, engineers and academicians have together acquired 100 patents in 6G,” Vaishnaw said.

The minister shared that the 5G network rollout has far exceeded the government of 200 cities by March 31, 2023, with coverage in 397 cities at present.

He said India has become $3.5 trillion (nearly Rs. 2,89,20,500 crore), and it can become the world’s largest economy with transformation across governance, infrastructure and businesses.

“When a country or economy has to reach this level then thousands of systems are required to be changed. Governance systems, logistics systems, banking systems and change in the own business method. This is the time when everyone should get on to this transformation journey. If we are able to do this transformation then there is no power that can stop India from becoming a $30 trillion (nearly Rs. 24,78,89,850 crore) economy,” Vaishnaw said.

The minister said 10 years ago 99 percent of mobile phones were imported and now, 99 percent of units used in India are made locally.

He slammed the Congress party, alleging a lax attitude toward mobile phone manufacturing in the country.

“I remember when we used to sit in on any discussion 10 years ago. It was said mobile penetration is good. People are using it, but it cannot be made. Congress thought the process was like this. Now, a big change has come that we can make it,” Vaishnaw said.

He also informed that India has started the export of telecom products to the US.

“Export of radio equipment has started from India in the last 7-8 months and that too to America,” Vaishnaw said.

Union Minister Jitendra Singh asked companies to encourage the leadership of women and look at opportunities in exploring businesses around the ocean economy.

“In the next 3-4 years, we will have ocean startups. We have 7,500 long coastal belts, longer than any other country has,” he said.

Singh said that the ocean has more minerals than those available over the ground in the Indian peninsula.

“A whole lot of wealth is lying there-minerals, metals, living, non-living resources. You will become a world exporter of fisheries and fish food,” he said.

The minister said that India has no dearth of talent, and there is a need to channelise them.

India has one of the fastest rollouts in the world of 5G and by 2023-end India will be ahead of most countries, said Ericsson global chief Borje Ekholm.

Talking exclusively to ANI, Ekholm said, “I would say that by the end of 2023, it will be clearly ahead of most other countries in the world.”

Talking about India as a business destination, Ekholm said India has strong pool of good software engineers.

“That’s going to drive the next level of growth in India and that makes it for us a very important market. We’re already almost 25,000 employees here in the country. We continue to grow and we strengthen our presence in R&D, Software development, service delivery, AI, automation, and all of those areas. We provide the critical infrastruct, the software and hardware that builds 5G Network. So we’re quite excited about our presence in India.”

Notably, telecom service providers in India started providing high-speed 5G services in the country from October 2022 onwards.

The government issued spectrum allocation letters to telecom service providers in August 2022, asking them to prepare for the rollout of 5G services in the country.

Department of Telecom had received total bids worth Rs 1.50 lakh crore from the 5G spectrum auction.

What is 5G, and how is it different from the current 3G and 4G services?

5G is the fifth-generation mobile network capable of transmitting a large data set at a very rapid speed.

Reliance Jio Expects to Become Largest Player in 5G Sector in 2023, Says Company’s President

India’s biggest telecom operator Reliance Jio expects to become the world’s largest player having a pure 5G network this year with promise to provide services at affordable rates to the masses, a senior official of the company said here.

Speaking to the PTI at the Mobile World Congress, Reliance Jio President Mathew Oommen said India needs inclusive growth and Jio will continue to support it.

“Jio will be the largest 5G SA (standalone) only network operator in the world in the second half of 2023, ensuring that all advanced services and capabilities are available affordably to the masses,” Oommen said.

He was responding to questions around the company’s 5G roll out plan and Jio’s competitor Bharti Airtel pushing for an increase in mobile call and data services price. Jio has focussed on rolling out 5G SA while Bharti Airtel is rolling out 5G (NSA) non-standalone network which can provide a mix of 5G and 4G services.

“India needs inclusive growth. Jio will continue to support India’s inclusive growth,” Oommen said.

Bharti Airtel Chairman Sunil Bharti Mittal earlier this week said mobile call and data rates will go up this year as the return on capital in the telecom business is very low.

Airtel had last month increased the price of its minimum recharge or the entry-level for the 28-day mobile phone service plan by about 57 percent to Rs. 155 in eight circles.

Oommen did not elaborate further on the statement.

Jio has rolled out its 5G network in over 300 cities while Airtel has network in over 140 cities.

India’s Mobile Exports to Exceed $10 Billion in FY 2022-23, Says Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw

The telecom industry in India has become investment-oriented and an employment generator and exports of mobile are expected to exceed USD 10 billion in the current financial year 2022-23, said Union minister Ashwini Vaishnaw.

“All the component systems are in India. In the coming years…will see electronic manufacturing, telecom manufacturing growing exponentially,” said Union Minister of Communications Ashwini Vaishnaw told reporters on Tuesday.

As part of its AtmaNirbhar plan, the government launched Production Linked Incentive (PLI) schemes in various sectors to make Indian manufacturers globally competitive, attract investments, enhance exports, integrate India into the global supply chain and reduce dependency on imports.

Regarding employment in the sector, Vaishnaw said iPhone manufacturer company Apple has standalone provided one lakh fresh jobs in India in the past one-and-a-half years.

The minister said 10 years ago, most components needed for mobile phone manufacturing were imported, and now 99 percent of components are indigenous.

“This is very big change. This year mobile export are going to exceed $10 billion (roughly Rs, 82,620 crore). All the component systems are in India,” he said.

According to the India Cellular and Electronics Association, the total number of jobs directly and indirectly created by mobile device manufacturers and their suppliers is around two million over seven years.

“Telecom is now a sunrise sector…the industry achieved the phase one target of 5G rollouts much before the set deadline of March 31. As of today, India has covered 387 districts with 5G coverage. 1 lakh base transceiver stations (BTSs) have been installed,” said Vaishnaw.

India’s telecom sector has been awarded the ‘global government leadership award’ by the London-based telco body GSM Association

Jio 5G Network Services Will Be Available Across India by End of 2023, Says Reliance

Reliance Jio Infocomm on Tuesday reiterated that it will cover high-speed 5G telecom services across India by the end of 2023.

“We are on the path to achieving the declared goal to increase the Jio 5G footprint month after month to other cities, towns, and talukas of various States and UTs, and are aiming to cover every town, every taluka, and every tehsil across the nation by December 2023,” Akash Ambani, Chairman, Reliance Jio said today.

This, he said, will be the world’s fastest 5G rollout.

He made the remarks at a post-Budget webinar coordinated by the Ministry of Electronics and IT (MeitY) and the Department of Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT) today.

On October 1, 2022, 5G services were formally inaugurated in India at the Indian Mobile Congress Event, in the presence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

“In less than half a year, the industry has retooled itself and is rapidly bringing the 5G revolution to every nook and corner of the country. Jio is leading 5G network rollouts in the country with the world’s largest Stand Alone Network Architecture that is uniquely suited to cater to the requirements of True 5G technology,” Akash Ambani said.

Jio has so far launched its 5G service in 277 cities.

The government issued spectrum allocation letters to telecom service providers in August 2022, asking them to prepare for the rollout of 5G services in the country.

Department of Telecom had received total bids worth Rs 1.50 lakh crore from the 5G spectrum auction.

Google, Apple, Meta, Netflix May Have to Pay Network Costs as EU Launches Telecom Sector Consultation

The European Commission on Thursday launched a consultation on the future of Europe’s telecoms sector, starting a process that could lead to requiring Alphabet’s Google, Apple, Meta Platform and Netflix to pay some network costs.

For more than two decades Deutsche Telekom, Orange, Telefonica, Telecom Italia and other operators have lobbied for leading technology companies to contribute to 5G and broadband roll-out.

They argue companies including Amazon and Microsoft account for more than half of data internet traffic.

The tech firms in response call it an internet tax that will undermine EU network neutrality rules to treat all users equally. The 12-week consultation will end on May 19.

EU industry chief Thierry Breton cited the heavy investments required to roll out 5G and broadband, saying he was not targeting any company.

“The burden of these investments is heavier and heavier. And that is in part because of a low return on investment in the telecoms sector, the increase of the cost of raw materials, and the world geopolitical context, the cost of energy, of course, because that has a big role to play,” he told a news conference.

“I want to say right away, that all of this reflection isn’t aimed against anyone at all, rather it’s for our fellow citizens,” Breton said.

He said a contributions mechanism could be one of the solutions.

According to a document seen by Reuters last month, respondents will be asked whether large traffic generators should be subject to a mandatory mechanism of direct payments to finance network deployment and also whether the EU should create a continental or digital levy or fund.

“We hope to move very quickly so that in the summer we will be able to come back with conclusions and then we will see what we do to continue to make progress,” Breton said.

Any legislative proposal will need to be agreed with EU countries and EU lawmakers before it can become law.

“This consultation is a positive and urgent step towards addressing major imbalances in the internet ecosystem to the benefit of European end-users,” telecoms lobbying group ETNO said in a statement.

Tech group Computer & Communications Industry Association (CCIA) criticised the proposal.

“Europeans already pay telecom operators for internet access, they should not have to pay telcos a second time through pricier streaming and cloud services,” Christian Borggreen, CCIA Europe’s senior vice president, said in a statement.

Google Pixel 7, Pixel 7 Pro Don’t Support the Latest 5G Standard: Report

Google Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro have received 5G support in India after the Android 13 QPR2 Beta 2 update released earlier this year. The latest Google Pixel series phones support 5G networks only on Airtel and Jio. However, a recent report has revealed that the Pixel 7 series phones only support the first 3GPP 5G standard i.e., Release 15, and not the latest 5G standard. Release 15 is the first 5G standard that was introduced in 2018.

According to a report by 9to5 Google, Pixel 7 series only comes with the first 3GPP 5G standard i.e., Release 15. It was introduced in 2018, followed by Release 16 in July 2020, and Release 17 and 18 in 2022. Release 16 was added by Qualcomm to the Snapdragon X65 in 2021 as well as the X70 modem. However, Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro phones are equipped with Samsung’s Exynos 5300 modem that supports Release 15.

Samsung, however, has mentioned that the Exynos 5300 modem can support Release 16, and hence, Pixel 7 series can get the same later this year. A recent Android 13 QPR issue tracker via Cstark also reads the same. It says that the Pixel 7 modem is capable of Release 16 and is expected to be reused for the Pixel 8.

Qualcomm earlier explained how Release 16 is better than Release 15. It shared that the second 3GPP 5G standard comes with a bunch of improvements to the foundation of the 5G system, including its coverage, capacity, latency, power, mobility, reliability, and more. It says that Release 16 supports full-power uplink to offer improved coverage at the cell edge.

Meanwhile, Qualcomm also announced the Snapdragon X75 modem with support for Release 17 and 18 earlier this month. Every new 3GPP release improves MIMO (multiple-input, multiple-output) performance and efficiency. The Snapdragon X75 with support for Release 17 and 18 will offer 10 Gigabit 5G peak download and 3.5 Gbps peak upload speeds, as well as high-speed coverage and power efficiency.
