JioPhone 5G Alleged Live Images Showcase Design; Specifications and Launch Timeline Tipped

Reliance Jio, Mukesh Ambani’s telecom firm, is set to launch a JioPhone 5G device later this year. While not much is confirmed about the phone, newly leaked live images of the purported handset have revealed new details about the design of the upcoming JioPhone 5G. According to alleged hands-on images tweeted by a tipster, the JioPhone will likely sport a dual rear camera setup and come in a black colourway. Additionally, the tipster has also hinted at a launch timeline for the device and provided some key specifications for the smartphone. While we cannot confirm if these images are, indeed, of the unreleased JioPhone 5G, but if they are, the images do give more insights into the upcoming budget device.

A twitter user (@ArpitNahiMila) has posted live images of the purported JioPhone 5G, showcasing the front and back design of the handset. In the images, the dual rear camera module is situated at the top centre, likely led by a 13-megapixel AI camera, accompanied with a 2-megapixel secondary lens, according to the Twitter user.

The display sports a waterdrop-style notch housing the front camera, which could be a 5-megapixel shooter. The back of the phone is supposedly made of fibre plastic body. The Jio logo can also be seen on the back of the device.

Additionally, the tweet mentions that the JioPhone 5G is expected to launch later this year, between Diwali and New Year and will likely be priced under Rs. 10,000. The tipster also mentions that the handset could be powered by a Unisoc 5G or a Dimensity 700 SoC.

Gadgets 360 could not verify if these images are, indeed, of the upcoming JioPhone 5G.

A previous report, claimed that the JioPhone 5G could be powered by the Snapdragon 480 SoC paired with 4GB of RAM and 32GB of onboard storage.

The 5G phone could likely feature a 6.5-inch HD+ LCD display with 90Hz refresh rate and could run on Android 12 out-of-the-box. The JioPhone could pack a 5,000mAh battery with support for 18W charging.

The upcoming smartphone could be priced between Rs. 8,000 and Rs. 12,000, a CounterPoint Research report had estimated last year.

The phone is said to come pre-loaded with Google Mobile Services and Jio apps. Last year, Reliance has confirmed that it was working with Google to launch a budget 5G smartphone.

This is not the first time that Ambani’s Jio is working to launch an affordable device for the masses. In October last year, the company debuted its first-ever laptop, called the JioBook.

The budget laptop packs an 11.6-inch display, Snapdragon 665 SoC, and a 5,000mAh battery. It was launched at Rs. 15,799.

Applied Materials to Invest $400 Million to Set Up New Engineering Centre in India

US semiconductor toolmaker Applied Materials will invest $400 million (roughly Rs. 3,300 crore) over four years in a new engineering centre in India, the company said on Thursday.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi met with the company’s CEO Gary Dickerson in Washington on Wednesday and invited Applied to strengthen the chip industry in the country.

Applied’s investment is among a flurry of announcements this week including General Electric’s deal to jointly produce jet engines for the military with state-owned Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd and data storage chipmaker Micron’s $825 million (roughly Rs. 6,760 crore) investment to build a new factory in India.

Modi also met Tesla CEO Elon Musk after which the automaker’s top boss said the company will try to be in India “as soon as humanly possible.”

The new center is expected to be located near the company’s existing facility in Bengaluru and is likely to support more than $2 billion (roughly Rs. 16,400 crore) of planned investments and create 500 new advanced engineering jobs, the company said.

Applied currently operates across six sites in India and works closely with the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, and the Indian Institute of Technology in Mumbai, two of the country’s prestigious institutions.

US chipmaker Micron also announced Thursday it would invest up to $825 million (roughly Rs. 6,760 crore) in a new chip assembly and test facility in Gujarat, India, its first factory in the country.

Micron said that with support from the Indian central government and from the state of Gujarat, the total investment in the facility will be $2.75 billion (roughly Rs. 20,500 crores). Of that total, 50 percent will come from the Indian central government and 20 percent from the state of Gujarat.

Micron said construction of the new facility in Gujarat is expected to begin in 2023 and the first phase of the project will be operational in late 2024.

Apple Vision Pro Guest Mode Will Allow More Than One Person to Use the Same Headset: Report

Apple launched its first spatial computer — the Apple Vision Pro — at its annual Worldwide Developers Conference earlier this month. The mixed reality headset supports both virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) content, and uses a feature called EyeSight to allow users to view their surroundings using the sensors surrounding the battery-powered device. Users can switch between AR and VR modes with the help of the dial on the right edge of the wearable. The company also released the visionOS SDK on Wednesday to help developers build apps specifically for the headset, which will reportedly feature a “guest” mode.

Spotted by 9to5Mac on the recently released visionOS SDK. this guest mode will allow people to use an Apple Vision Pro headset, even though it is registered to a specific user. Owners of the Vision Pro will reportedly be offered the option to enable or disable this feature. The headset can also be secured by the owner, according to the report, so that guest users are not able to access some applications or settings without Optic ID — Apple’s security feature that scans the wearer’s iris for biometric authentication.

Apple Vision Pro is priced at a hefty $3,499 (roughly Rs. 2,88,700) and is scheduled to go on sale next year via the Apple website and Apple retail stores in the US. The company has not yet confirmed whether it plans to launch the headset in markets outside the US, including India.

However, given the steep price, it is safe to assume that not everyone will opt to buy the Apple Vision Pro and it is unlikely that more than one person in a household will invest in the device. Therefore, the Guest Mode might actually be useful to Vision Pro owners, allowing more than one person to experience the headset while protecting the owner’s data.

The report suggests that the Apple Vision Pro will offer owners the option to lock hidden and deleted photos or other files using Optic ID. The functioning of this is similar to the Touch ID- or Face ID-based protection used to protect specific folders in the Photos app on an iPhone. We can expect to learn more about the guest mode on the Apple Vision Pro headset in the coming months, before the device goes on sale in the US next year.

Micron Confirms Up to $825 Million Investment to Set Up Chip Factory in Gujarat

US memory chip firm Micron Technology said on Thursday it would invest up to $825 million (roughly Rs. 6,760 crore)in a new chip assembly and test facility in Gujarat, India, its first factory in the country.

Micron said that with support from the Indian central government and from the state of Gujarat, the total investment in the facility will be $2.75 billion (roughly Rs. 22,159 crore). Of that total, 50 percent will come from the Indian central government and 20 percent from the state of Gujarat.

Reuters reported earlier this week that India’s Cabinet approved the project ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s state visit to the US, which kicked off on Wednesday.

Micron said construction of the new facility in Gujarat is expected to begin in 2023 and the first phase of the project will be operational in late 2024. A second phase of the project is expected to start toward the second half of the decade, it said. The two phases together will create up to 5,000 new direct Micron jobs.

Earlier this week, the Indian government reportedly approved the US chipmaker’s plan for a new semiconductor testing and packaging unit in the country. A senior government source informed of the development on Tuesday ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s state visit to the US. Cabinet approval was required due to the size of the incentive package, the source added. Micron’s plan had been previously reported but not approved by the cabinet.

Micron Technology’s plans come as the White House presses US chip companies to invest in India with talks ongoing about possible further investments, US administration officials told Reuters.

An Indian industry source familiar with Micron’s approvals said the so-called Assembly Testing Marking and Packaging will be built in the city of Sanand.

OnePlus V Fold Colour Options for Chinese, Global Models Tipped Ahead of Debut: Details

OnePlus V Fold is expected to launch in the coming months, as the Chinese smartphone manufacturer’s first foldable. Announced at the company’s Cloud 11 launch event in February, the foldable phone is said to be powered by Qualcomm flagship Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 SoC and sport an 8-inch inner display and a 6.5-inch outer screen. Leaked renders of the foldable handset suggest that it will be equipped with a triple rear camera setup housed in a circular module. Ahead of the smartphone’s debut two leakers have tipped the colour options of the OnePlus V Fold.

Tipster Ice Universe (Twitter: @UniverseIce) recently claimed that OnePlus’ first foldable would be as competitive — and offer similar camera and sound performance — as the Huawei Mate X3. In response to a user’s query, the tipster stated that the purported OnePlus V Fold would be available in a golden colour option.

Meanwhile, Allround-PC’s Max Jambor responded to Ice Universe’s tweet, stating that the golden colour option might be available in China, but there would also be black and green colour options for the handset — presumably for the models sold outside China.

Earlier this week, tipster Steve Hemmerstoffer (Twitter: OnLeaks) leaked new images of the purported OnePlus V Fold handset in a black leather finish. The smartphone is shown to feature an alert slider on the right edge of the display, along with the power button, which also appears to house a fingerprint scanner for biometric authentication.

The leaked images of the OnePlus V Fold also show the handset sporting a circular rear camera module with three sensors. The OnePlus V Fold is tipped to feature a periscope camera for high-quality optical zoom support. The inner display is also shown to feature a left aligned hole-punch cutout for a selfie camera while the outer screen also has a similar cutout that is centrally aligned.

As per an earlier report, the OnePlus V Fold could be powered by Qualcomm’s latest Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 SoC, and could sport an 8-inch quad-HD+ OLED inner display and a 6.5-inch full-HD+ outer display. It could feature a 50-megapixel triple rear camera setup as well as two 32-megapixel selfie cameras, one located on the inner display and the other on the outer screen, as per the report.

The newly launched Oppo Find N2 Flip is the first foldable from the company to debut in India. But does it have what it takes to compete with the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 4? We discuss this on Orbital, the Gadgets 360 podcast. Orbital is available on Spotify, Gaana, JioSaavn, Google Podcasts, Apple Podcasts, Amazon Music and wherever you get your podcasts.

Elon Musk’s Starlink High-Speed Internet Service Eyes India, Faces Resistance From Reliance Jio Over Auctions

Elon Musk is eager to bring his Starlink satellite broadband to India, but the world’s richest man faces strong resistance from Mukesh Ambani, Asia’s wealthiest, who runs Indian telecom giant Reliance Jio.
Following a meeting with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the US on Tuesday, Musk said he was keen to launch Starlink in India which “can be incredibly helpful” in remote villages that have no internet or lack high-speed services.

What he didn’t talk about is how Starlink is at odds with Ambani’s Reliance on the government’s distribution of satellite broadband spectrum, setting the stage for a battle between two of the world’s richest men for satellite services in the world’s most populous nation.

Starlink is lobbying India to not auction the spectrum but just assign licenses in line with a global trend, saying it is a natural resource that should be shared by companies. An auction may impose geographical restrictions that will raise costs, it said in company letters made public by the Indian government this month.

Reliance disagrees and has called for an auction in a public submission to the government, saying foreign satellite service providers could offer voice and data services and compete with traditional telecom players, and so there must be an auction to achieve a level playing field.

In signs of deepening rivalry, an industry source with direct knowledge said Reliance will continue nudging the Indian government to auction satellite spectrum, and not agree to the demands of foreign companies.

The stakes are high for Musk. His push comes after a 2021 attempt to launch Starlink in India ran afoul of local regulators for taking bookings without a license, and just as he is in talks with India to set up a Tesla factory.

For Ambani, keeping foreign competition at bay in satellite broadband will be another shot in the arm – his Reliance Jio already has 439 million telecom users, making it the market leader, and 8 million wired broadband connections, a 25 percent market share.

Starlink’s view on auctions is shared by Amazon’s satellite internet initiative, Project Kuiper, and the British government-backed OneWeb.

Amazon declined to comment. The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India, OneWeb, and Starlink parent SpaceX did not respond.

Asked for comment, Reliance referred Reuters to its own and Starlink’s government submissions.

AUCTION VS LICENSING

Of the 64 responses from companies, industry groups, and others to India’s public consultation on satellite spectrum, 48 favoured licensing, 12 voted for an auction, with the rest neutral, according to India’s Koan Advisory.

A second industry source said Reliance believes opening the floodgates to established foreign players like Starlink without an auction will allow them “runaway success” just like Amazon, which will hurt Indian firms and create an uneven playing field.

Ambani’s Reliance Retail has locked horns with Amazon but lags the US rival in market share in the e-commerce space.

Deloitte says India’s satellite broadband service market will grow 36 percent a year to reach $1.9 billion (roughly Rs. 14,000 crores) by 2030.

Starlink says it is already authorised in 84 administrations around the world and has 1.5 million active users of its low-latency broadband services. Amazon plans to launch its first set of satellites in 2024.

Foreign satellite internet firms are concerned an auction by India will raise the likelihood of other nations following suit, increasing costs and investments, said one of the sources, an Indian adviser to a foreign company.

If India decides on holding an auction, OneWeb will find it difficult to do business in the country, said an industry source. Starlink is waiting for clarity on India’s spectrum allocation before firming up its commercial strategy, another source said.

Tim Farrar, an analyst at US-based consultancy TMF Associates, said it would set a “bad precedent” for Starlink to pay a substantial auction amount in India when it is obtaining low-cost licenses in many other countries.

“I’d expect Starlink to make high-profile free offers elsewhere in order to try and demonstrate what India could be missing out on,” he said.

iOS 17 Beta 2 Released for Developers; Introduces Key Siri Command Update, Cross Fade in Apple Music, More

iOS 17 beta 2 was released by Cupertino-based tech giant Apple on Wednesday for developers alongside the iPadOS 17 beta 2. The iOS 17 update was released earlier this month at the Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) 2023. The updated operating system introduced a StandBy mode, a Journal app, and an AirDrop feature called NameDrop for easily sharing contacts with other iPhone users. The new iOS beta release also carries several important updates including a changed Software Update interface within the Settings application.

As spotted in a 9to5Mac report, the newly-launched developer’s beta version carries a small but important update for the Siri command. Users can now easily choose the app that they want to use to message using the virtual assistant, without additional commands.

Previously, up until iOS 16, when users used the ‘send a message’ command, Siri would send it through Apple’s own Messages app. With the iOS 17 beta 2 update, users can now easily select any messaging applications, including third-party ones to send the message. They no longer have to give out a longer ‘send message via WhatsApp’ or ‘send message via Telegram’ command.

This updated feature is compatible with any Siri-compatible third-party applications, like WhatsApp and Telegram. This update also enables users to change the contact information of the receiver or edit the concerned message, with a single tap within the virtual assistant interface.

Apple also updated the user interface of the Software Update sub-section with a new design in the Settings application. The iOS 17 beta 2 also enables the tapping of two iPhone together for a quick AirDrop feature, which was announced at the WWDC 2023.

With iOS 17 beta 2, users can control the data and settings of the Fitness application through a dedicated section. The cross-fade effect in Apple Music using a slider control is also available in this beta version, that allows users to transition between two songs seamlessly.

iPhone SE 4 Unlikely to Launch in 2024; Analyst Cites In-House 5G Modem Issues: Report

iPhone SE 4, expected to succeed the iPhone SE 2022 model, will not likely launch next year. According to analysts, the in-house 5G modem rumoured to feature in the model will not be ready in time for the Cupertino-based tech giant to launch the purported iPhone SE 4. Instead, the fourth SE Apple handset can be expected to launch in 2025, with bigger displays and aforementioned in-house 5G modems, as tipped previously. Until then the iPhone models are expected to carry Qualcomm modems.

According to a MacRumors report, the iPhone SE 4 will not launch in 2024 because, in a research note shared with the publication, analysts suggested that the in-house 5G modems the model had previously been tipped to launch with, will not be ready by next year. According to Apple analyst Jeff Pu, the Apple 5G modems will start production by 2025. Another analyst, Ming-Chi Kuo agreed with Pu’s speculations.

Kuo also suggested that the iPhone SE 4 will likely launch with a larger OLED display than its preceding models. He added that the display change will be the “biggest change” in Apple’s plans for the handset.

Reportedly, China-based Beijing Oriental Electronics (BOE) will supply 6.1-inch OLED panels for the iPhone SE 4 to Apple instead of LG and Samsung, who have thus far provided the company with LCD displays for the lower-end SE models.

iPhone SE 2022 sports a 4.7-inch Retina HD display with a resolution of 750×1,334 pixels. It is powered by the A15 Bionic chipset and claims to deliver an ‘all-day battery life.’ The model is equipped with a single 12-megapixel rear camera sensor and a 7-megapixel front camera sensor.

At launch, the base 64GB model was marked at Rs. 43,900, while the 128GB and 256GB variants were priced at Rs. 48,900 and Rs. 58,900, respectively. The handset is offered in Midnight, Starlight, and (PRODUCT) RED colour options.

Apple Releases visionOS Developer Tools to Create Apple Vision Pro Applications: Details

Apple on Wednesday released the visionOS SDK, a set of tools that will enable developers to build apps for the Apple Vision Pro mixed reality headset. The Cupertino company’s first spatial computer will go on sale in the US next year and Apple is providing app developers with the tools required to build apps for the device. Unlike other Apple products, the company’s upcoming mixed reality headset will use a combination of three different modes of interaction using a person’s eyes, hands, and voice. The visionOS SDK will allow developers to tailor their apps around this functionality while making use of the specialised hardware on the device.

The company announced on the Apple Developer website that the visionOS SDK is now available to developers. In order to create spatial computing apps for the Apple Vision Pro, developers will have to download Xcode 15 Beta 2 that includes the latest visionOS SDK along with a tool to visualise and preview 3D content for the headset called Reality Composer Pro.

Developers will be able to use a simulator for visionOS, which will let them interact with their apps as they are built, while also testing how they will appear in different lighting conditions or in a variety of room layouts, according to Apple. The SDK will let users port an existing app project for the headset, or allow them to create a new application from the ground up.

Apple also stated that it will open labs where developers can test their apps on the Apple Vision Pro, starting in July. These developer labs will be set up in Cupertino, London, Munich, Shanghai, Singapore, and Tokyo. The company’s engineers will also be available to provide support to developers looking to create applications for the Vision Pro headset.

Meanwhile, the company will also open up applications for Apple Vision Pro developer kits. Instead of testing at the company’s developer labs, these kits will allow app creators to build their apps and test them at a faster rate on the mixed reality headset. However, there’s no word from Apple on whether these developer kits will only be available to developers in the US, or the criteria for applying to receive these kits.

Announced by Apple at WWDC 2023 earlier this month, the Apple Vision Pro is the firm’s first mixed reality headset that supports both augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) technologies. It is controlled with a user’s hands, voice, and eyes. The device also features Apple’s EyeSight technology allowing a user to be aware of their surroundings. Apple’s Vision Pro will also feature support for optical inserts for users who require vision correction, and the prescription lenses will be available when the headset goes on sale in the US next year.
