Crypto Relief Aid Set-Up in War-Ridden Israel; Unocoin CEO Lists Ethical Implications

In the ongoing Israel-Gaza conflict, cryptocurrencies are once again becoming a source of wiring funds around the war-ridden regions. After Palestine-based militant group, the Hamas, struck Israel with missiles on October 6, there were hundreds of deaths and destruction. In order to collect some emergency funding for Israel, a bunch of crypto companies have established ‘Crypto Aid Israel’, that would let anybody in the world send money for use there. Since crypto transactions are instant and largely untraceable, its transfers in war-torn regions may have ethical and financial implications, Sathvik Vishwanath, the CEO of Unocoin crypto exchange told Gadgets 360.

CryptoJungle, 42Studio, MarketAcross, Collider Ventures, Blockchain B7, Efficient Frontier, Ironblocks, the Israel Blockchain Association, Bits of Gold, and CoinTelegraph have reportedly come together to form Crypto Aid Israel earlier this week. So far, the portal has managed to collect over $60,000 (roughly Rs. 50 lakh) via crypto assets.

“Our goal is to raise desperately needed funds for displaced citizens whose unbearable situation demands humanitarian aid,” the official page of Crypto Fund Israel reads.

So far, the funding is being allocated to the families of soldiers, first respondents, captured nationals as well as killed ones. Some parts of the proceeds are also being saved to re-construct the damaged parts of southern Israel.

Talking to Gadgets 360, Unocoin’s Vishwanath said the ethical implications of relying on cryptocurrency funds in geopolitically troubled countries is a complex and contentious issue.

Crypto can provide financial services to those excluded from traditional banking systems, promoting financial inclusion and empowering marginalised communities. Crypto transactions can, however, hinder regulatory oversight and potentially enable illegal activities such as money laundering and tax evasion,” Vishwanath said.

Instances of crypto assets being used to buy weapons and facilitate other illegal activities were topics of grave concerns when the Russia-Ukraine war started in February last year. Several crypto exchanges had to tighten their policies and KYC needs at the time to ensure that Russian nationals and entities that were sanctioned by the US, the UK and other nations — did not get to engage with crypto assets.

In fact, in 2022, Israel itself had identified and confiscated 30 cryptocurrency wallets that were allegedly funding the Hamas group. These wallets were owned by an exchange firm named al-Mutahadun, which is based in the city of Gaza. Benny Gantz, the defence minister of Israel had approved the seizure of these accounts in March 2022.

Along with these ethical implications, crypto relief funds come with other baggage as well, Vishwanath noted.

Cryptocurrencies are known for their price volatility, making them risky assets to rely on in times of economic crisis. Citizens could lose significant wealth if their favoured assets plummeted. The chances of abuse of crypto assets can also not be ruled out. In an unstable environment, the risk of abuse is higher because the government may use cryptocurrencies for personal gain or to avoid sanctions. Lack of understanding among the population can also lead to uninformed investments or fraud,” he said.

Essentially, geopolitically troubled countries may consider cryptocurrencies as a complementary financial tool, but full reliance on them is risky. Industry experts advise governments to diversify financial strategies and combine traditional finances with crypto assets.

OnePlus Open marketing images have leaked online, days ahead of the debut of the first foldable phone from OnePlus. These pictures show off the design of the smartphone, including the external camera module. Both the inner and outer displays on the upcoming OnePlus Open are shown in the images. The foldable handset is shown to be available in two colour options — earlier reports suggested that OnePlus’ first foldable phone would be available in Emerald Eclipse and Voyage Black colourways.

Ahead of the upcoming launch of the OnePlus Open, German tech publication WinFuture has leaked 10 images of the foldable handset. These marketing images show the inner and outer displays of the handset — the OnePlus Open is said to sport a 7.82-inch (2,268 x 2,440 pixels) OLED inner display with a 120Hz refresh rate and a 6.31-inch (1,116 x 2,484 pixels) OLED outer screen with a 120Hz refresh rate.

Meanwhile, the leaked images also reveal the external camera module that was not clearly visible in previously leaked images of the OnePlus Open. The top-center aligned circular camera island at the back is seen with the Hasselblad branding found on other OnePlus flagship smartphones. The LED flash is located on the top left corner of the rear panel.

According to the WinFuture report, the OnePlus Open will be launched on October 19. The handset will reportedly be available with a price tag of $1,700 (roughly Rs. 1,41,500) in the US. The handset will also be launched in other markets, including Europe and India.

A recent hands-on video also leaked the design of the upcoming OnePlus Open, suggesting that the handset would sport a barely perceptible display crease on the inner screen. The video also showed that the handset will be equipped with OnePlus’ tri-state alert slider, similar to the company’s flagship phones. We can expect to learn more about the smartphone ahead of its expected debut later this month.

iQoo 12 India Launch Timeline Tipped, Said to Feature Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 Chipset

iQoo 12 could be launched in India in the coming months, according to details shared by a tipster. The Chinese smartphone maker’s next flagship handset is tipped to feature Qualcomm’s next-generation Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chipset, which is expected to be unveiled in the coming days at the chipmaker’s annual Snapdragon Summit 2023. Details of the handset, such as its specifications, are still under wraps and the company is yet to officially announce any plans to introduce the successor to the iQoo 11 5G in India.

According to details shared by tipster Mukul Sharma (X: @stufflistings) on X (formerly Twitter), the iQoo 12 will be the first smartphone in India to debut with the yet-to-be-unveiled Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chipset. Qualcomm’s top-of-the line chip is expected to power flagship smartphones from Xiaomi, OnePlus, Samsung, and other smartphone makers over the coming year.

The purported iQoo 12 will be launched in India “by November end or in December”, according to Sharma. This timeline suggests that iQoo could once again become the first to introduce a smartphone with Qualcomm’s flagship chip — earlier this year, the smartphone maker launched the iQoo 11 5G in India with the current-generation Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 SoC.

The iQoo 11 5G sports a 6.78-inch 2K E6 AMOLED display with 1,800 nits of peak brightness and a 144Hz refresh rate. The handset was launched with Android 13 out-of-the-box. It is equipped with a triple rear camera setup comprising a 50-megapixel primary camera, a 13-megapixel telephoto/ portrait camera, and an 8-megapixel ultra-wide angle camera. The handset has a 16-megapixel selfie camera.

Aimed at gaming enthusiasts, the iQoo 11 5G features a vapour chamber cooling system that is claimed to reduce temperatures during extended gaming sessions. The handset is equipped with a 5,000mAh battery with 120W FlashCharge support that can charge the phone to 50 percent in eight minutes, according to the company.

National Cinema Day 2023: Rs. 99 Tickets Now Live on BookMyShow, PayTM, More

National Cinema Day is returning this year on Friday, October 13, and ahead of that, we’ve got details on ticket booking for the same. On that day, movie tickets across India will cost merely Rs. 99 per head, in celebration of successful box office runs this year and as a means to drive more people into theatres. As per the Multiplex Association of India (MAI), over 4,000 cinema halls will participate in the event, with the major chains — PVR INOX, Cinepolis, and Movie Time — having already updated their website banners in anticipation.

National Cinema Day 2023: How to book tickets online?

Those interested in availing the National Cinema Day offer can start booking tickets online via familiar platforms like BookMyShow, PayTM, and official cinema chain websites by selecting a location, followed by your preferred movie and the October 13 date. However, at the time of writing, only Bollywood movies — specifically, the Shah Rukh Khan-led Jawan and Mission Raniganj starring Akshay Kumar — provide the option to select the required date. I’m guessing this was done to favour the Indian box office collections, which isn’t surprising considering some industry stakeholders allegedly went the extra mile last year to get National Cinema Day postponed to ensure Brahmāstra made a profit.

While the offer isn’t applicable on premium formats like IMAX, 4DX, or even recliner seats, the idea is for every film, regardless of the time of day, to be priced the same. That said, the Rs. 99 pricing does not include additional charges (convenience fee + GST) levied upon a ticket purchase. Convenience fee, however, does not apply to tickets bought in person at the counter at the cinema itself.

In a tweet, PVR Inox revealed that despite the initial announcement, the National Cinema Day offers might only be available in select cities. Due to state regulations, it appears as though theatres located in South Indian regions — Tamil Nadu, Telangana, and Andhra Pradesh — won’t be able to offer tickets at Rs. 99. We saw a similar exclusion last year, as well. Food and beverages are also expected to start at a discounted rate of Rs. 99 on October 13, albeit they’re entirely dependent on which ticketing platform or theatre you opt for.

In a statement back in September, the MAI said, “This special occasion brings audiences of all ages together for a day of cinematic bliss, celebrating the incredible success of multiple films at the box office this year. It’s a heartfelt ‘thank you’ to all the moviegoers who contributed to this success and an open invitation to those who haven’t returned to their local cinema.” National Cinema Day debuted last year globally, heavily slashing ticket prices, though internationally, all formats were priced the same.

Google Pixel 8 Pro Survives Drop and Scratch Tests, Outlives iPhone 15 Pro Max, Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra

Google Pixel 8 Pro was launched last week as the search giant’s latest flagship smartphone, alongside the standard model. The phone has a metal frame with glass on both sides. Days before the smartphones go on sale in India and global markets, YouTube users have been testing the smartphone’s durability through “drop” and “scratch” tests. While these tests are not a definitive indicator of the ability of these phones to survive real world damage, the Pixel 8 Pro appears to beat the iPhone 15 Pro Max on the durability front.

In a recent YouTube video by PBKReviews, the Pixel 8 Pro was first dropped by a person holding Google’s new flagship phone at the waist level. The phone’s screen was aimed at the ground but the concrete appeared to do no damage to the Corning Gorilla Glass Victus 2 protected display, aside from some scuff marks on the edges of the phone. The phone picks up some scratches on the corners of the metallic frame, when dropped from the same level as the person’s head, but the glass on the front and rear panel remains intact.

When dropped from waist height with the rear panel facing the concrete, the Pixel 8 Pro gets scratches on the rear panel and the horizontal metallic camera module. The next test involves dropping the phone from the person’s waist, but on its side. The impact to the frame does affect the smartphone — there’s some damage to the display in the top left corner, but it continues to function normally.

During the video, the Pixel 8 Pro is also subjected to a scratch test that involves placing the phone inside a Ziploc bag with sand, and moving the smartphone’s display around on the surface of the sand. The Pixel 8 Pro picks up very small scratches on the display, but does not seem to be affected by the scratch test.

The YouTube user mentions that the Pixel 8 Pro survived the channel’s drop test unlike the Galaxy S23 Ultra, which cracked during the drop test. Similarly, it is also claimed that Google’s Pixel 8 Pro phone fares better in these tests than the iPhone 15 Pro Max.

While the Pixel 8 Pro has not been put through Zack Nelson’s (JerryRigEverything) bend test on YouTube, these early indications of durability are a good sign. Not only is the Pixel 8 Pro expensive — it costs more than Rs. 1 lakh in India — but Google has also promised to provide 7 years of OS, feature and security updates for the Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro — strong build quality of these handsets could go a long way in ensuring their longevity.

BGMI 2.8 Update Is Now Live: Zombies Edge Mode, Hoverboard, More

Battlegrounds Mobile India (BGMI) has launched its new 2.8 update, bringing a zombie-themed game mode called ‘Zombie’s Edge.’ The update is available for free download now, on Android and iOS, with the mode being unlocked on the Erangel, Livik, and Miramar maps. The Aerolith Lab and its surrounding areas serve as the hotspot during the event, teeming with countless ‘mutants’ to kill, alongside an occasional Berserker and Ripper variants, which will prove more challenging. The former is of a muscular stature, whose right arm can seamlessly transform between a sharp blade and an armoured fist. Meanwhile, the Ripper is slender and uses its agility to close in and perform slash attacks.

Bear in mind that Zombie’s Edge is the same game mode introduced on the international PUBG Mobile version, last month. It’s unclear what changes have been made to the India-exclusive BGMI, but judging by the patch notes, they appear exactly the same. Update 2.8 also introduces Mutation Gauntlets, which can be equipped to drastically enhance gameplay — there’s a slam attack that pretty much one-shots zombies and a Great Smash moveset that’s similar to Doomfist’s ultimate from Overwatch 2. Upon activating it, the player leaps up into the air to choose a landing point, then slams down dealing heavy, AOE damage. Indeed, there’s a Ripper version of the gauntlet as well, which adds a dash move and the ability to perform slashes.

All of this ties into the infection’s core, the aforementioned Aerolith Lab, which is best described as a living, towering organism that’s absorbing the undead to get stronger. Once the process is complete, it spawns a ‘Rage’ Berserker, a formidable mutant, that can be bested to gain tonnes of loot. The update also brings the Maglev Hoverboard, which enables fast traversal across both land and water bodies, alongside a ‘Halloweeks’ update, casting the area with carved pumpkins, disco lights, and dancing mutants.

For the uninitiated, BGMI came into the scene soon after the Indian government banned the uber-popular PUBG Mobile due to privacy and security concerns. BGMI was just recently unbanned in May, following a 10-month period, with developer Krafton limiting the number of hours one could play and adding a parental verification system for in-game purchases. The re-launch also brought the new Nusa map, a small tropical zone that’s laden with ziplines and a Super Recall feature that brought back dead teammates into the game. At the time, the game was granted a three-month ‘trial approval’ by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), though it’s unclear whether the band is completely lifted now.

Battlegrounds Mobile India is available to play on Android and Apple iOS devices.

OnePlus Open Design Leaked via Hands-on Video, Suggests Barely Visible Display Crease

OnePlus Open — OnePlus’ inaugural foldable smartphone is confirmed to launch in India soon. It will debut in the Chinese market with the Oppo Find N3 moniker. Over the past couple of weeks, there have been several leaks of the handset, showing off its exterior design and specifications. Most recently, a hands-on video of the OnePlus Open has surfaced online offering a first look at the main display. The video suggests a design language similar to the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5. It is seen with a minimal display crease and a hole punch cutout on the display.

A YouTube channel called Jagat Review has posted a hands-on video of the upcoming OnePlus Open aka Oppo Find N3. It offers a close-up look at the handset. The book-style foldable smartphone seems to have a design language similar to the Galaxy Z Fold 5, Pixel Fold, and last year’s Oppo Find N2. The upcoming handset appears to have a wider display both inside and out with minimal crease. The crease on the display of the OnePlus Open is not as noticeable as the one we saw in other recent book-style foldables.

The video also suggests the presence of an Alert slider and infrared remote blaster on OnePlus Open. It also has a hole-punch cutout on the display to house the front camera. These design elements appear to be in line with what we’ve seen in previous leaks. However, the camera island is hidden in the video.

OnePlus Open is believed to launch on October 19. The handset has made its way onto Geekbench recently with a Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 SoC and 12GB RAM. It is expected to run on the Android 13 operating system.

As per previous leaks, the OnePlus Open will feature a 7.82-inch (2,268 x 2,440 pixels) OLED inner display with a 120Hz refresh rate and a 6.31-inch (1,116 x 2,484 pixels) OLED outer screen with a 120Hz refresh rate. It might get a triple rear camera setup, comprising a 48-megapixel primary camera, a 48-megapixel secondary camera, and a 64-megapixel telephoto camera. At the front, it might get a 32-megapixel or 20-megapixel sensor. It is said to pack a 4,805mAh battery with support for 100W fast charging.

OnePlus Watch 2 With Circular Display Tipped to Launch Next Year

OnePlus Watch was launched in March 2021. The smartwatch was later offered in limited edition models. It comes with a 1.39-inch AMOLED display with 2.5D curved glass protection and claims to offer up to 14 days of battery life. It is expected to be succeeded by the OnePlus Watch 2, although this has not yet been officially announced by the company. However, a new leak has surfaced on the Web that suggests the launch timeline of this purported smart wearable. The tipster also hints at one of its key design elements.

Tipster Max Jambor (@MaxJmb) claimed in a post on X (formerly Twitter) that the OnePlus Watch 2 will likely launch in 2024 and be equipped with a circular display. According to the tipster, this is keeping up with the recent trend in OnePlus products with round features including the previous OnePlus Watch. For example, the OnePlus 11 and OnePlus Pad, both feature circular rear camera modules, the tipster noted.

Moreover, the OnePlus Open, the company’s foldable smartphone that is expected to launch soon, has also been tipped to carry a circular rear camera module. Leaked design renders of the OnePlus 12 have also shown the handset with a round camera module.

It is likely that the OnePlus Watch 2 will arrive with several upgrades over the preceding model. The OnePlus Watch runs custom RTOS and the upcoming model will also likely run the same OS.

OnePlus Watch is available in Midnight Black and Moonlight Silver colour options and in a Cobalt Limited Edition. It is backed by a 402mAh battery and supports Bluetooth 5.0, GPS, GLONASS, Galileo, and Beidou connectivity options. It comes with an IP68 rating for dust and splash resistance and 5ATM water resistance.
