WhatsApp Web Users Could Soon Get the New Revamped Sidebar Interface: Report

WhatsApp was reported to be working on a new interface for its Web client with a sidebar and a dark mode last year. Now, according to a new report, the revamped design has started to roll out to some users. The new WhatsApp Web feature is said to be available to some of the users who have signed up for the Web client’s beta programme. This also hints that a public rollout may not be too far off. Notably, last week, WhatsApp also began rolling out Meta AI to some users in India.

According to a report by the WhatsApp update tracker WABetaInfo, the instant messaging platform has begun shipping out the new interface to some users. The report highlights that not all users who have signed up for the beta programme are getting the feature as the company is likely conducting a limited test currently. The new interface does not add new features but rather rearranges the position of different sections of the platform in a neatly designed area on a sidebar.

Based on the screenshots shared by the publication, the new WhatsApp Web interface also comes with a dark mode, which will offer better readability for some users who prefer the black-background-white-text format. The icons for Chats, Communities, Status Updates, Channels, Archived Chats, Starred Messages, and even Broadcasted messages can be seen on the sidebar. This also offers improved navigation for Starred messages and Archived chats as the current version does not have single-click access to them.

With the new interface shipping out to beta testers now, the report also states that the feature can roll out to all users in a few weeks. Meta has been working on several features for WhatsApp. Last week, Gadgets 360 spotted the new Meta AI chatbot on WhatsApp for users in India. Later the feature also appeared on Instagram and Messenger, and a Meta spokesperson reportedly confirmed that the company was testing the feature in new regions.

Earlier, it was reported that WhatsApp was working on a link privacy feature where users would get the option to turn off link previews. The feature was designed to hide any overt information the thumbnail and the short description could show to those who might be prying over the chats.

WhatsApp Web to Soon Get Username Search Feature Without Sharing Phone Number to Increase Privacy: Report

WhatsApp is reportedly working on a new feature that is expected to allow users to exercise more privacy when using WhatsApp Web. It may soon be unnecessary for users to share their phone numbers with others to connect with them on the instant messaging platform. The firm is reportedly developing a feature that will allow users to search for others on the platform by their usernames. The messaging client has previously been tipped to be working on the feature for Android users. Now, it is being reported that the feature may soon make its way to WhatsApp Web.

A report by WhatsApp feature tracker WABetaInfo states that WhatsApp is working on a feature for its Web client that is expected to allow a user to connect with others on the platform by looking up their usernames. Right now, people need to exchange phone numbers to connect on WhatsApp. The purported feature will help users connect with others without compelling them to share their numbers with people with whom they do not want to share them.

The username-based search on WhatsApp is expected to enhance privacy and encourage more secure communication without having to compromise any personal details. A screenshot of the work-in-progress feature shared in the report shows that once it is available, users can connect with anyone by searching for the name, phone number or username.

A similar feature is already available on Telegram, a competing cloud-based instant messaging platform. WhatsApp has previously been reported to be working on the same username-based search feature for its Android version. The new report claims that this feature is expected to be available for WhatsApp Web users as well in a future update.

This development comes a day after it was reported that WhatsApp is also working on a feature that will allow users to create usernames from the WhatsApp Web application. Notably, users will be allowed the flexibility to change their WhatsApp username at any time, according to the previous report.

WhatsApp Working on a Revamped Dark Interface, Sidebar for Web Users: Report

WhatsApp started rolling out dark mode for its Web version back in 2020. Now, the instant messaging platform is reportedly gearing up to introduce a new colour scheme and a redesigned sidebar for the dark theme. The new interface is expected to be beneficial for users of WhatsApp Web in low-light conditions. It is expected to reduce the strain on the eyes. However, WhatsApp has not yet officially confirmed the development of a new interface and it is not available to beta testers yet.

As per a report by WABetaInfo, WhatsApp is testing a new background colour for its Web version’s dark theme along with a new tweaked sidebar. The new design and colour upgrades are expected to reduce eye strain in low-light environments. The sidebar could offer an improved messaging experience.

The new interface is not available for testers yet but is expected to be released in a future update of the WhatsApp Web. However, the publication has included a preview of the rumoured colour scheme for the dark theme. The colour scheme update is visible across the top bar, background, and message bubbles.

Meta has introduced several new features to its instant messaging platform lately. Earlier this month, the social media company announced Pinned Messages that allow users to highlight a specific message in any ongoing one-on-one and group conversation and pin it to the top of that chat for up to 30 days. Further, WhatsApp introduced the View Once option for voice messages. This lets users send a voice message that will disappear once the recipient listens to it.

WhatsApp could soon allow users to post status updates from the Web version or linked ‘companion’ devices. It is also reportedly working on a new feature that will let users share HD images and videos in their status updates.

WhatsApp Rolling Out View-Once Photos, Videos for Desktop Apps, Web: Report

WhatsApp already offers a disappearing messages feature that deletes a sent message after a set amount of time. WhatsApp users can also send photos and videos that can only be viewed once before being erased from the chat. The latter feature, however, is currently available only to Android and iOS users. The feature was previously offered on desktop and Web versions of the application but was removed for security concerns. Now, a report suggests that the social media platform is reintroducing the “View Once” photos and videos feature for WhatsApp Web and WhatsApp desktop versions.

According to a WABetaInfo report, WhatsApp is rolling out the view once feature for photos and videos on Web and desktop versions of the app. In a screenshot shared in the report, the button to set the “view once” option for the media is seen within the caption bar in the drawing editor on the WhatsApp for Windows platform. The report added that the company is enabling this “view once” photos and videos option for Windows, macOS and linked devices like iPads. The app is also extending this feature to the WhatsApp Web platform, according to the report.

The feature is now rolling out to eligible users. It has already rolled out to some users over the past few weeks as per the report. If you do not see the option on any of your desktop or Web apps yet, it is likely to come around eventually. Make sure that the applications are updated to their latest versions.

The report noted that the Meta-owned platform is reintroducing this feature on desktop and Web that they initially did away with, upon public suggestions and demands. The initial removal cited security issues. Feedback from users, however, suggested that the “view once” feature is a helpful aspect as it helps one view a media file without it eating up the storage space of the phone.

In related news, starting in December, WhatsApp backups on Android will continue to work, as long as users have available cloud storage space on their Google accounts. If someone reaches their storage limit, they will need to free up space on Google Drive to resume backups. Notably, if you do not want your chats to take up storage, you can turn on the “Disappearing Messages” option in the app.

WhatsApp has also added a service to prompt users to add their email address to their WhatsApp account. However, it will not be visible to your WhatsApp contacts but will rather work as a secondary identifier, after your phone number, where the app can send verification codes and the like.

WhatsApp Web Reportedly Adds Edit Message Feature on Latest Beta Version: How It Works

WhatsApp has begun testing a feature that allows users to edit sent messages on the latest beta version of its Web app. The Meta-owned messaging service was previously spotted working on a pop-up alert that informed users after a message was edited. Now, the ability to modify a text message after it has been sent has been rolled out to some beta testers. At the moment, users have a short duration after a message is sent before editing is disabled.

Version 2.2319.9 of WhatsApp Web comes with a new feature, according to WhatsApp feature tracker WABetaInfo. Users who are running this version of the WhatsApp Web client will see a new action Edit message on the right-click menu. It is worth noting that the ability to edit messages is currently limited to text messages.

Users will only have five minutes to edit a message after it has been sent, according to details shared by the feature tracker. You can edit a message multiple times, and editing messages works in chats and in groups, WABetaInfo says.

It is worth noting that when iOS 16 was released last year, Apple introduced the ability to edit texts sent via the Messages app within 15 minutes, but each text can only be edited five times.

While the ability to edit messages is currently only available on the latest beta version of WhatsApp Web, the feature tracker claims that the feature is likely to make its way to the beta versions of WhatsApp for Android and iOS soon. WABetaInfo says that an alert informing users that a message has been edited has been spotted on WhatsApp beta for Android 2.23.10.10, adding that this is probably the final step before the feature is rolled out for testing.

WhatsApp recently rolled out a range of features including the ability to create single-vote polls, search for polls in chats by using filters, and receive notifications when group members vote on a poll. Users can also forward media along with exiting captions, or remove these captions while forwarding messages from one chat to another. They can also add captions to documents, according to the messaging service.
