Death Stranding Movie in Development From A24 and Hideo Kojima

Death Stranding is coming to the big screen, thanks to a partnership between indie film studio A24 and game developer Kojima Productions. The announcement comes ahead of the Hideo Kojima-helmed studio’s 8th anniversary. The film adaptation will focus on the mysteries surrounding the titular apocalyptic event that brought the nightmarish creatures called BT into the living world, blurring the lines between the dead and the living through a portal. Instead of a direct translation of the divisive 2019 video game, the film will serve as a companion piece that further expands the solitary universe. The world of Death Stranding is also set to return in DS2, a sequel announced at last year’s The Game Awards.

A24 was born into this world about 10 years ago, their presence is singular within the industry, they are like no other,” Kojima said in a blog post. “The intention is that our audience will not only be fans of the games, but our film will be for anyone who loves cinema. We are creating a Death Stranding universe that has never been seen before, achievable only through the medium of film, it will be born.” Reports of an adaptation surfaced last year, with Hammerstone Studios — best known for Barbarian — attached to produce, though now it’s unclear whether the team will be involved in any way. Kojima, on the other hand, will be ‘deeply involved’ with the creation of the movie — supervising, art, plotting, and content — but won’t be directing it. While not explicitly mentioned, he’s already got his hands full with Death Stranding 2 and OD, his horror collaboration with filmmaker Jordan Peele. Neither have announced a release window yet.

For the uninitiated, A24 is the studio behind acclaimed arthouse films like The Lighthouse, the Oscar-winning Everything Everywhere All at Once, Uncut Gems, the new horror flick Talk to Me, and more. At the moment, there are no details on the cast and crew, but the original game featured a range of A-list Hollywood actors, which was instrumental in sales — besides the legendary Kojima’s namesake, of course.

The game starred Norman Reedus (The Walking Dead) as Sam Porter Bridges, a courier tasked with reconnecting the last survivors of a post-apocalyptic America, which fell victim to an extinction event, leading to otherworldly forces ravaging the living world. The post-apocalyptic world has its own rules and phenomena like ‘Timefall,’ which refers to rainfall that causes all organic matter to age, forcing every human being to wear raincoats and carry around oddly shaped umbrellas to prevent exposure. The game also starred Mads Mikkelsen as Clifford Unger, Léa Seydoux as Fragile, filmmakers Nicolas Winding Refn and Guillermo Del Toro, Tommie Earl Jenkins, and Troy Baker as the lead antagonist Higgs.

Kojima Productions is also bringing the documentary Hideo Kojima: Connecting Worlds to the public eye by releasing it on Disney+ in the American Spring 2024. It largely focuses on Kojima’s process as he launched his independent studio in 2015 and the creation of Death Stranding, following his split from Konami — the Japanese studio where he helmed the Metal Gear Solid series of games.

Currently, there is no release window for the Death Stranding movie.

Apple Said to Bring iPad and MacBook With OLED Screens, No Timeline for Foldable iPad: Report

Apple is reportedly working to bring OLED (organic light-emitting diode) screens to its future iPad and MacBook models. The Cupertino-based company is expected to switch from mini LED technology to OLED for its iPad Pro family for the first time in 2024. Meanwhile, a new report states that Apple is looking to develop foldable iPad models, widening its product portfolio, though there is no solid launch timeline. The first Apple tablet with a foldable display form factor is likely to debut a few years after the transition to OLED is complete.

As per a report by Nikkei Asia, Apple will expand its use of advanced OLED screens to iPad and MacBook in the coming years. The supply chain report citing multiple tech industry executives states that the iPhone maker is aiming to deploy OLED display technology to its high-end iPad models next year. A MacBook model with an OLED display is also said to be under development for production in the second half of 2025 at the earliest. This indicates that MacBook with the new screen may launch at the end of 2025 or in early 2026. This is in line with previous reports. OLED displays are already used in iPhone models.

Further, the report claims that Apple is evaluating the possibility of making a foldable iPad after it deploys the OLED screens on the tablets. However, the company reportedly “does not have a concrete timeline” for its foldable iPad plan. This could take place only after the two OLED variants launch next year.

TF Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo earlier this year opined that Apple will widen its portfolio by introducing a foldable iPad next year. He hinted that the foldable iPad would use a carbon-fibre kickstand and that it would arrive in 2024. Later, well-known analysts Mark Gurman and Ross Young denied Kuo’s claim saying they have not heard about a foldable iPad launch in 2024.

Besides the foldable iPad, Apple is also speculated to release a foldable smartphone around 2025. The company has filed a patent for a new technology that would detect accidental falls of iPhone and iPad models with flexible screens to reduce damage.

Apple is yet to reveal plans to unveil a foldable iPad. Therefore, all the above details should be considered with a pinch of salt.

In another post, still on mark with the “storm” theme, the company shared a short video of lightning in the sky. A microsite within the official Lava website also features an image of lightning accompanied by the words “coming soon.”

However, an Amazon microsite of the upcoming phone confirms the Lava Storm 5G moniker. The image on the microsite teases the back panel of the upcoming smartphone. The top left corner is seen with two separate circular camera units vertically arranged, followed by a small circular LED unit. In the outline of the phone, the volume rockers and the power button can also be seen placed on the right edge of the handset.

Meanwhile, tipster Abhishek Yadav (@yabhishekhd) claims that the new smartphone from Lava will be launching soon and could be priced in India under Rs. 15,000. He also states that the phone could carry a MediaTek Dimensity 6100+ SoC.

The recently launched Lava Blaze 2 5G is priced in India at Rs. 9,299 for its 4GB + 128GB option, while the 6GB + 128GB and 8GB + 128GB variants are listed at Rs. 10,999 and Rs. 11,099, respectively. The phone is offered in Glass Black, Glass Blue, and Glass Orange colourways.

Google Reportedly Working on Pixie, a Pixel-Exclusive AI Assistant Said to Launch With Pixel 9 Series

Google unveiled the Pixel 8 series of smartphones in October this year and it is likely to be followed by the Pixel 9 lineup in 2024. Although the expected launch of the next Pixel series is several months away, few rumoured details of the handsets have surfaced online including processor and charging features. Now, a report claims that the Mountain View, California-based tech giant may be working on a new Pixel-exclusive Artificial Intelligence assistant, that may arrive with the Pixel 9 series.

According to a report by The Information (via MySmartPrice), Google is working on a Pixel-exclusive AI assistant called Pixie. The report claims that the new AI assistant is expected to perform all the functions of the current Google Assistant and more. The assistant will likely be baked into the Google Pixel 9 series in 2024. It is important to note that ‘Pixie’ may be an internal codename and vary from its final name.

The report also claims that Pixie would integrate data from several Google products and services, such as Gmail and Maps, to provide more personalised assistance to users. It is said to be able to perform sophisticated and multimodal activities such as directing someone to the nearest store where they can purchase a product they have photographed. The rumoured AI assistant is tipped to be powered by Gemini Nano.

Google intends to expand Pixie beyond the upcoming flagship Pixel 9 series to lower-end phones as well as other devices such as wearables, according to the report. It is unclear whether the AI assistant will be available for existing smartphones or if it will just be available for future products.

An earlier report suggested that the Pixel 9 phones are likely to be powered by Tensor G4 SoCs, which have been tipped to carry the codename “Zuma Pro.” Notably, the Tensor G3 chipsets that power the Google Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro have the codename “Zuma.” The Google Pixel 9 series is also expected to be among the first Android phones to adopt Qi2 wireless charging technology.

The Creator, Starring John David Washington, Is Set to Release on Disney+ Hotstar on December 20

The Creator is headed to Disney+ and Disney+ Hotstar on Wednesday, December 20. Gareth Edwards’ latest sci-fi affair set amidst a futuristic war between humans and AI, will arrive 82 days after its theatrical release on September 29, during which it collected $104 million (about Rs. 866 crore) at the global box office. That’s just short of the 90-day window Disney allows for its standard releases, which gradually grows in time based on how they perform in cinemas. The longer it generated money in theatres, the longer it took for the film to come to streaming. Avatar: The Way of Water was a critical example of that, coming to Disney+ after a whopping 173-day period, during which it shattered several box office records.

Disney continues its trend of providing poor localisation for movies that aren’t from the Marvel Cinematic Universe, by only presenting The Creator in the original English language. There is no mention of dubs anywhere across the press release or the announcements on Hotstar’s social channels. While the film managed to break the $100-million mark, as predicted by analysts, it still underperformed in Disney’s eyes, with the studio forking over $80 million (about Rs. 666 crore) in production budget. A disappointing $40.8 million (about Rs. 340 crore) was made within the US and Canada, with signs of a further failure of reach in international markets, which contributed another $63.2 million (about Rs. 526 crore). The PG-13 rating didn’t help its cause much, and it seems like any new IP — like The Creator — is failing to succeed with Disney.

Director Edwards’ previous film, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, helped Disney dominate the box office by crossing the $1 billion mark — thanks to an established universe and a passionate fan base. Even the recent live-action remakes of classic Disney animated movies, such as The Little Mermaid, have performed incredibly well, generating around half a billion across a 90-day theatrical run. The Creator’s failure raises the question of whether the company will continue to experiment with and establish new franchises, instead of milking sequels and remakes.

Set in the year 2070, The Creator follows a grieving ex-special forces agent Joshua (John David Washington), who is tasked with hunting down the elusive architect of an AI that holds the power to end the raging war and mankind itself. The film also touches upon religious elements, while crafting a story about survival and parenthood, all the while Joshua ponders on the mysterious disappearance of his wife (Gemma Chan).

The Creator is out December 20 on Disney+ and Disney+ Hotstar. Unfortunately, in India, the movie will only be available in the original English language audio.

Asia’s Line Messaging App Plans to Expand into NFT Ecosystem, Bags Millions in Investment

Line, the Asian messaging giant based in South Korea, has decided to foray into the Web3 waters. It has created a special venture called Line Next Corporation that will be dedicated to expanding the NFT ecosystem. In a recent development, the Line Next Corporation has raised an investment of $140 million (roughly Rs. 1,165 crore) and the round was led by private equity firm Crescendo Equity Partners. With this funding, Line Next is looking to launch a global NFT platform in the near future.

In January 2024, Line Next plans to officially launch its global NFT platform named Dosi. This platform will let users engage in trading digital assets and products. Line Next plans to launch Dosi as a mobile app and provide new solutions to help brands give ownerships of digital assets and trade them. This will help users and brands linked to the Line Next platform integrate Web3 elements with their identities.

“It is significant that we were able to secure this funding in the context of a globally contracting investment environment. We plan to use this opportunity to further popularize Web3 and develop a new service ecosystem where users own the value of their digital goods,” Youngsu Ko, CEO of Line Next said in an official statement.

Dosi will use Finschia public blockchain. Line Next and Crescendo will become governance members of the Finschia Foundation.

Line has clocked 5.5 million users worldwide and more than 470,000 cumulative transactions since its launch in 2011. Its NFT initiative could hence open the digital assets sector for experimentation to the masses.

The South Korean messaging giant’s pivot towards Web3 does not quite come as a surprise, given that the country is trying to keep a progressive approach towards the digital assets sector.

Last year, Seoul-based SK Telecom has decided to create and operate a crypto wallet, powered by advanced Web3 capabilities in partnership with two blockchain firms — AhnLab Blockchain Company and Atomrigs Labs — to assist the development of its crypto wallet.

Lim Hyesook, the minister of science, information and communication technologies in South Korea had also announced last year that the nation is planning to invest over $177 million (roughly Rs. 1,372 crore) in supporting metaverse projects that will also trigger job opportunities in the sector.

Intel Announces Core Ultra, Xeon Processors for PCs and Servers in Bid to Join AI Gold Rush

Intel, the biggest maker of personal computer processors, announced new chips for PCs and data centres that the company hopes will give it a bigger slice of the booming market for artificial intelligence hardware.

The lineup includes updated Xeon server chips — the second overhaul of that processor in less than a year — that use less electricity while boosting performance and memory, the company said in a statement Thursday. Intel’s Ultra Core chips for laptops and desktop computers, meanwhile, will let PCs process AI functions directly.

Intel’s new product with the most to prove may be the Gaudi 3, the latest installment of a line that competes with Nvidia Corp.’s industry-leading H100. These chips — known as AI accelerators — help companies develop chatbots and other rapidly proliferating services. Gaudi 3 is on schedule for release in 2024, and Intel said that it will outperform the H100.

Intel shares rallied as much as 5.6 percent in New York trading following the announcement, outpacing a 3.1 percent gain by the Philadelphia Stock Exchange Semiconductor Index.

Chief Executive Officer Pat Gelsinger is counting on AI features to help reinvigorate growth at Intel, which has suffered from past missteps and a broader PC slump. But he faces tougher competition than ever. Longtime rival Advanced Micro Devices Inc. has snatched market share in PCs and servers, and some of Intel’s largest customers are now designing their own chips in-house.

At the same time, Nvidia has become a dominant force in data center chips with its AI accelerators. The products have sent sales soaring and propelled Nvidia’s valuation above $1.1 trillion (roughly Rs. 91,40,829 crore). It’s now on course to overtake Intel in total revenue this year for the first time, according to analysts’ projections. For decades, Intel was the biggest chipmaker in the world.

AMD also is playing catch-up with Nvidia in AI accelerators. Its version of that product, the MI300, will debut next year. AMD unveiled the chip at an event last week and announced that the market for AI accelerators could climb to more than $400 billion (roughly Rs. 33,23,060 crore) in the next four years.

Intel looks to gain an edge by shifting more AI processing toward devices, rather than data centers. The new Ultra Core chips, which do just that, will be available in roughly 230 PC models from manufacturers such as Dell Technologies and Samsung Electronics. starting as soon as Thursday, Intel said.

Another shift could help Intel. For now, the AI industry has concentrated on developing chatbots and services through a process called training, which involves bombarding the software with data. In the future, companies may be more focused on actually running their completed software — something that can be handled with Xeon processors in data centers and with PC chips, Intel said.

“A few people create models — lots of people use them,” Gelsinger told the audience at an event in New York. AI will be handled by PCs and other gadgets because of the high costs of data centers, he said. Sending data over the internet also limits the responsiveness of systems, he said.

But running AI software on a laptop can quickly drain the battery. To mitigate that risk, the new Core parts will run more efficiently and — in their highest-end configuration — provide more than 10 hours of life even during the most demanding tasks, Intel said.

Intel’s Xeon range will get new components that make them 42 percent better at running AI-related workloads than the previous generation, the company said. That predecessor was rolled out in January 2023.

Overall, the component will be 36 percent better when measured by performance per watt of electricity, Intel said. And even more new versions of the Xeon line will be ready in the first half of next year, the company said, part of Intel’s push to speed up product releases.

Gelsinger aims to turn around the company and restore it to prominence in the semiconductor industry, which he believes will grow to a trillion dollars in sales by the end of the decade. He assured the audience Thursday that his comeback plan is working.

“We’re going to do a decade of semiconductor work in four years,” he said. “That’s pretty crazy. We’re on track, baby.”
