Google’s Tensor G4 SoC to Adopt FOWLP Technology to Improve Heat Management, Power Efficiency: Report

Google Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro were launched in October last year with a Tensor G3 chipset and several AI-based features. A few short months after their release, we are seeing multiple leaks about the next-generation Pixel phones on the Web. Google’s next-generation SoC — Tensor G4 — is anticipated to power the Pixel 9 and Pixel 9 Pro. The chipset would be reportedly based on Samsung’s latest 4nm process and might offer improved power efficiency and heat management.

As per a report by Korean media outlet FNN, Google will apply Samsung Electronics’ foundry 4-nano microprocessing to the Tensor G4 chipset that will be installed in the upcoming Pixel 9 series. The Tensor G4 would reportedly use an advanced packing method called the FOWLP (Fan-out Wafer Level Packaging). This type of packaging is said to improve the heat generation of semiconductors and increase power efficiency and performance. This would offer notable improvements over last year’s Tensor G3 SoC.

Further, the report states that Samsung used the 4nm method in the Exynos 2400 chipsets of the Galaxy S24 and Galaxy S24+ models. The report claims that the handsets were well-received in the select markets they were launched.

The Tensor G4 SoC was earlier tipped to come with minor performance upgrades over the Tensor G3 SoC.

In India, the Pixel 8 starts at Rs. 75,999 for the 8GB RAM + 128GB storage model, while the Pixel 8 Pro starts at Rs. 1,06,999 for the 12GB RAM + 128GB storage model.

Google’s Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro run on Android 14. The vanilla variant sports a 6.2-inch full-HD+ (1,080×2,400 pixels) OLED screen with a 120Hz refresh rate. Meanwhile, the Pixel 8 Pro has a 6.7-inch OLED display with Quad-HD (1,344×2,992 pixels) resolution and 120Hz refresh rate. They run on Google’s Tensor G3 chipset and the Titan M2 security chip.

The Pixel 8 has a dual rear camera unit, led by a 50-megapixel Samsung GN2 sensor, while the Pixel 8 Pro boasts a triple rear camera setup, including a 50-megapixel main sensor. Both models carry a 10.5-megapixel front camera. The Pixel 8 houses a 4,575mAh battery with support for 27W wired charging, whereas the Pixel 8 Pro is backed by a 5,050mAh battery with support for 30W wired charging.

Google Pixel 9 Leaked Images Suggest iPhone 15-Like Flat Edges, Triple Rear Cameras

Google Pixel 8 is still new in the market, but early renders of the Pixel 9 have already started emerging on the Web, giving us a look at what the company’s next flagship smartphone could look like. The renders show the handset in a blue shade and suggest three cameras on the rear. This would be a significant update for the vanilla model. It looks like Google may have redesigned the rear camera module. The images indicate flat edges on the Pixel 9, similar to what we saw on the Pixel 9 Pro. It also has a hole-punch cutout for the selfie camera on the display.

After posting CAD-based renders of the Google Pixel 9 Pro, tipster Steve H.McFly (@OnLeaks), has leaked renders and specifications of the Google Pixel 9 in association with 91Mobiles. The renders suggest a compact design for the handset with flattened sides, resembling the latest iPhone 15 series. The phone appears to get a redesigned rear camera module housing three sensors and an LED flash. This would be a huge upgrade for the vanilla Pixel as the previous Pixel 6, Pixel 7, and Pixel 8 only got dual rear cameras.

Instead of extending the camera bar across the entire width of the back panel as seen on the current Pixel 8 and older models, the Pixel 9 appears to have an oval-shaped island similar to the Pixel Fold. The camera unit appears to include a new periscope telephoto lens. Specification-wise, this update would bring the regular Pixel handset much more in tune with the Pro model.

The Pixel 9 is seen in a blue colour in the leaked images. The handset could be offered in multiple colour options during the launch. Further, the screen has a centrally located single hole-punch cutout for the selfie camera.

Google’s Pixel 9 is said to measure 152.8×71.9×8.5mm. It is expected to sport a 6.1-inch screen, down from the Pixel 8’s 6.2-inch screen.

Google is expected to announce the Pixel 9 series in October. The handset could run on Android 15 and the company’s in-house Tensor G4 SoC.

Google Pixel 9 Pro Design Renders Leak; Suggests Flat Edges, Redesigned Camera Bar

Google Pixel 8 series with the vanilla Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro was launched in October at the ‘Made by Google’ event. Now, the first Pixel 9 Pro renders have emerged online offering a glimpse into the possible design of Google’s next flagship. The renders suggest a design deviation from the past few generations. The Pixel 9 Pro seems to have flat edges similar to what we’ve seen on iPhone models and a redesigned camera bar.

Prominent leaker Steve H.McFly (@OnLeaks), in collaboration with MySmartPrice, has shared alleged renders and specifications of Google Pixel 9 Pro. The handset appears to have flat edges resembling iPhone models. The camera bar seems to have undergone a design change in the upcoming handset as it does not appear integrated into the frame. The pill-shaped camera island is not connected to the edges of the device, deviating from the previous design language of the Pixel Pro models. It looks more like the camera bar from the Pixel Fold. Three cameras are placed side-by-side and covered by glass. Google’s temperature sensor appears to make a return with the upcoming phone.

The front of the Pixel 9 Pro draws similarities to the Pixel 7 and Pixel 8 series, with a hole-punch cutout for the selfie camera and narrow bezels. The power button and volume rockers are seen on the right side of the phone. The left side seems to have antenna markings. The USB Type-C port, speaker grille, and SIM card tray are seen to be housed at the bottom of the handset. Google seems to have changed the arrangement of the SIM card tray. In the Pixel 8 Pro, the SIM tray is placed on the left spine. The mmWave antenna cover and a microphone appear to be present on the top of the phone.

Google’s upcoming Pixel 9 Pro is said to feature a 6.5-inch display and could measure 162.7×76.6×8.5mm. By comparison, the Pixel 8 Pro measures 162.6×76.5×8.8mm and features a 6.7-inch display.

Google is expected to announce the Pixel 9 series in October. The handset could ship with Android 15 and the company’s in-house Tensor G4 SoC. We can expect more leaks in the coming days.

Google Reportedly Working on Pixie, a Pixel-Exclusive AI Assistant Said to Launch With Pixel 9 Series

Google unveiled the Pixel 8 series of smartphones in October this year and it is likely to be followed by the Pixel 9 lineup in 2024. Although the expected launch of the next Pixel series is several months away, few rumoured details of the handsets have surfaced online including processor and charging features. Now, a report claims that the Mountain View, California-based tech giant may be working on a new Pixel-exclusive Artificial Intelligence assistant, that may arrive with the Pixel 9 series.

According to a report by The Information (via MySmartPrice), Google is working on a Pixel-exclusive AI assistant called Pixie. The report claims that the new AI assistant is expected to perform all the functions of the current Google Assistant and more. The assistant will likely be baked into the Google Pixel 9 series in 2024. It is important to note that ‘Pixie’ may be an internal codename and vary from its final name.

The report also claims that Pixie would integrate data from several Google products and services, such as Gmail and Maps, to provide more personalised assistance to users. It is said to be able to perform sophisticated and multimodal activities such as directing someone to the nearest store where they can purchase a product they have photographed. The rumoured AI assistant is tipped to be powered by Gemini Nano.

Google intends to expand Pixie beyond the upcoming flagship Pixel 9 series to lower-end phones as well as other devices such as wearables, according to the report. It is unclear whether the AI assistant will be available for existing smartphones or if it will just be available for future products.

An earlier report suggested that the Pixel 9 phones are likely to be powered by Tensor G4 SoCs, which have been tipped to carry the codename “Zuma Pro.” Notably, the Tensor G3 chipsets that power the Google Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro have the codename “Zuma.” The Google Pixel 9 series is also expected to be among the first Android phones to adopt Qi2 wireless charging technology.
