6 keys to victory in Week 18

Vincent Carchietta-USA TODAY Sports

Notice a theme this week? The Eagles have a very versatile offense that’s difficult to prepare for, so the standard “protect the QB,” “Pressure Jalen Hurts,” and the like don’t fit. Not to mention these two teams just faced off two weeks ago, with several lessons learned.

This week, the Giants’ number one duty is to win time of possession. The more they have the ball, the less it is in the hands of Hurts, who can do so much damage on the field. Win the possession battle, be efficient on the field, don’t turn the ball over, and be smart in play-calling. Any chance of a win surrounds the Giants’ ability to complete this task.

Potential must-plays from Giants-Eagles game

The New York Giants (5-11) host the Philadelphia Eagles (11-5) this Sunday at MetLife Stadium in the 2023 regular season finale.

The Eagles, depending on the day’s outcome, will either be the NFC East champion or the 5th overall seed in the NFC Playoffs.

The Giants have been eliminated from postseason play for several weeks now.

The teams met just two weeks ago and put up 58 points (Philadelphia won, 33-25), so there is a chance this could be another high-scoring affair.

Here are three fantasy plays for you to consider.

Caveat Emptor: There is a possibility that some key players may sit on both sides, so please check the inactives on Sunday to make sure your choices are playing.

Giants defense

Bill Streicher-USA TODAY Sports

Sure, the Eagles have owned the Giants over the past decade and have averaged 35 points per game during their current five-game winning streak against Big Blue.

But in fantasy football, points allowed aren’t everything. The Giants have been one of the NFL’s top teams when it comes to takeaways (they are +9 on the season) and the Eagles have been losing the turnover battle the last four weeks (8 giveaways, 3 takeaways for a -5 differential).

The Giants also scored on special teams last week on a 94-yard punt return and have three defensive touchdowns to their credit this season.  Last week, against the Rams, they had four sacks and could be heating up in that area as well.

Giants RB Saquon Barkley

Bill Streicher-USA TODAY Sports

The Eagles were shredded by Arizona’s James Conner last week, who racked up 29.3 FPS on DraftKings in the Cardinals’ 35-31 win.

While Conner is a solid back, he is not Saquon Barkley. The Eagles look like a team that has peaked and are struggling to stop the run. In the seven games since their bye, Philly has been allowing 150 yards per game on the ground.

Two weeks ago, Barkley scored 19.4 FPS against the Eagles. He had a down week last week against the Rams, but this could be his last game as a Giant and he’ll want to make it count. The Eagles may not be able to stop him.

Giants WR Darius Slayton

Bill Streicher-USA TODAY Sports

The Giants — and Darius Slayton — want to end the season on a high note. Slayton has been hot, scoring 18.0 and 23.6 FPS in the last two games.

With Tyrod Taylor under center and taking more deep shots, I like Slayton against the Eagles defense, which has been dead last when it comes to defending wide receivers this season.

John Michael Schmitz not practicing

The New York Giants returned to the field on Wednesday ahead of a Week 18 game against the Philadelphia Eagles — their regular season finale.

Similar to a week ago, the Giants opted to go with a Wednesday walkthrough as opposed to a full practice.

“We’re going to do similar to what we did last week, which will be more of a walkthrough,” head coach Brian Daboll told reporters.

The bad news was that two players were unable to participate in the walkthrough, indicating they are unlikely to play on Sunday afternoon.

“Pinnock will not do the walkthrough and John Michael won’t do the walkthrough,” Daboll said. “It’s more of (Pinnock’s) toe than it is his foot so we’ll see how it goes this week.

“Lower leg, ankle, kind of got leg-whipped a little bit in the game so we’ll see where (Schmitz) is at. Sore today.”

The Giants’ full (projected) Wednesday injury report can be found below:

Did not participate: OL John Michael Schmitz (lower leg), S Jason Pinnock (toe)

Limited participant: CB Detone Banks (shoulder), LB Carter Coughlin (shoulder), CB Darnay Holmes (foot), QB Tyrod Taylor (back)

Full participant: N/A

Saquon Barkley named George Young-Ernie Accorsi Good Guy Award winner

The George Young-Ernie Accorsi Media Good Guy Award recognizes a player “for his consistent and outstanding cooperation with the writers who cover the New York Giants on a daily basis.”

The award is voted on by the Giants chapter of the Professional Football Writers of America (PFWA), and this year’s recipient is Saquon Barkley.

Barkley becomes the 23rd recipient of this award and is also up for the Walter Payton Man of the Year Award.

The Giants and Barkley didn’t start the 2023 season the way they wanted to, from his contract negotiations and franchise tag to the team’s 1-5 start, it was rough. And while the season saw the Giants endure continuous adversity, there was improvement in some areas and we learned a lot about the team.

Barkley is finishing up his one-year contract this Sunday and the Giants will certainly look for a way to retain him. His 916 yards and four touchdowns on the ground may not be what he has put up in the past, but that’s largely due to rushing behind the worst offensive line in the NFL.

A dynamic and versatile running back on the field, Barkley is the consummate professional off the field, which is why he was granted this award and is up for the Walter Payton Award.

What Barkley does on the field makes him a phenomenal running back, he has all the intangibles a coach looks for. But what he does off the field is what makes him a great human being.

Both are reasons the Giants need to keep him around.

New York Giants sticking with QB Tyrod Taylor in season finale

Despite Tyrod Taylor’s up-and-down performance in a Week 17 loss to the Los Angeles Rams, the New York Giants do not intend to make any changes at quarterback. They will stick with the veteran over rookie Tommy DeVito.

Head coach Brian Daboll made the announcement on Wednesday.

“Yes,” Daboll said bluntly when asked if they were sticking with Taylor.

The Giants had gone with DeVito for six straight games before benching him at halftime in Week 16 and replacing him with Taylor. The rookie had gone 3-2 to that point.

In 10 games (four starts) this season, Taylor has completed 62.8 percent of his passes for 1,044 yards, four touchdowns, and two interceptions. He’s added 159 yards on 30 carries (5.3 ypc).

After last Sunday’s loss, the 13-year veteran admitted he still has more to learn.

“There’s always room to learn. And I think those stand out obviously when you lose. It’s easy to throw them under the rug or wash them away when you win just because you are so on the emotional side of winning, but the biggest lessons come when you lose. You put more of a critical eye on situations, you put a more of a critical eye on yourself,” he said. “I know that’s how I operate, and I think I’m better from those and that goes with the sport and in life as well.

“So yeah, when times of adversity, which we’ve dealt through a lot this year, there’s two ways to go and to be a good team, you have to be able to look yourself in the face, understand what you didn’t do so well, be better at it, attack those weaknesses and overall be a better player and ultimately that makes you a better team.”

Taylor, who is expected to become a free agent after the season, could be playing his last game in a Giants uniform on Sunday.

One player New York Giants would steal from Eagles

The New York Giants (5-11) will host the Philadelphia Eagles (11-5) at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey this Sunday afternoon.

That, of course, provides those of us here at Giants Wire the opportunity to hypothetically steal from the Eagles’ roster in search of depth and/or talent upgrades for Big Blue for the second time this year.

Back in Week 16, we stole wide receiver A.J. Brown. Because of that, he’s not entered into the equation this time around.

In looking over the Eagles’ roster, the options remain plentiful. They have an extremely deep and talented personnel group and have quality options at just about every position.

Jalen Hurts is always a tempting steal but his turnover issues are the opposite of what Brian Daboll wants in a quarterback. There’s also wide receiver DeVonta Smith, Giants-killing running back Boston Scott, offensive tackles Lane Johnson and Jordan Mailata, defensive lineman Jalen Carter, edge rusher Brandon Graham, and the list goes on and on.

Ultimately, we’re going with captain and future Pro Football Hall of Famer, center Jason Kelce.

Why Kelce at the age of 36? We’ll let defensive coordinator Wink Martindale tell you.

“I mean, this guy to me is a first-ballot Hall of Famer,” Martindale said in December. “He embodies Philly. Just like the fans, mean but smart. This guy, to me, and I said this last year and I don’t know if I said it to you guys, it’s like playing Peyton Manning and it’s not sexy so he doesn’t get that Peyton Manning-type credit, but he’ll see something, whether it’s a stance, whether it’s a guy putting his mouthpiece in different. He’ll see something and completely flip a protection. So, that chess match is always tough.

“I think Jason Kelce, he doesn’t get enough credit. Like I said, he’s a first-ballot Hall of Famer.”

Kelce embodies the type of gutty, gritty, and mean offensive lineman that helped lead the Giants to their four Super Bowl titles.

What are your thoughts, Giants fans? Would you pick Jason Kelce or would you steal an entirely different player from the Philadelphia Eagles?
