7 Giants who could be playing their last game in blue vs. Eagles

Justin Pugh was proud that he was able to come ‘right off the couch’ and play competitively on the field this season.

Good for him for feeling that way. He’s a good guy to have in the locker room and a professional all around. Unfortunately, while the spirit was willing, the flesh, at times, was not.

Pugh got pushed around pretty good in some games and the Giants would be better off with a younger, healthier option on their roster.

They already have that in-house and will likely add a few more this offseason.

New York Giants NFL power rankings round-up going into Week 18

The New York Giants couldn’t deliver an upset on New Year’s Eve, falling to the Los Angeles Rams, 26-25, in a game they could have won if not for a multitude of self-inflicted wounds.

The loss dropped the Giants to 5-11 on the season. Their final game will come on Sunday in the late afternoon window against the Philadelphia Eagles.

As we enter Week 18, here’s a look at where the Giants place in a multitude of power rankings.

Nate Davis, USA TODAY:

You’d like to see a more well-rounded game from OLB Kayvon Thibodeaux, but he’s nearly tripled his rookie sack total (4) to 11½ as a sophomore.

Mike Lawrence/Getty Images

Barry Werner, List Wire:

The Giants put up a good fight against the Rams. They got a special-teams TD from Gunner Olszewski. They didn’t get a 54-yard field goal from Mason Crosby that would have given them a late lead and likely a victory.

Dalton Miller, Pro Football Network:

The Giants wanted to pull the upset against the Rams, but they came up short on their two-point conversion attempt that would have effectively won them the game. The Giants defense turned Matthew Stafford over twice, and Tyrod Taylor found some efficiency and explosiveness in his first game as a starter since October.

Vinnie Iyer, The Sporting News:

The Giants have showed their relentless DNA with defensive high effort and offensive reinvention regardless of QB. Brian Daboll should get a mulligan for his injury-marred mess of a second season.

Vincent Carchietta-USA TODAY Sports

Frank Schwab, Yahoo! Sports:

Darius Slayton is having a strong finish to the season. The past two weeks, he has 196 receiving yards and two touchdowns. He’s 26 and has just a $2.5 million base salary next season. He might not be a true No. 1 receiver but he’ll be a good piece for the 2024 Giants.

Josh Schrock, NBC Sports:

The Giants are now assured of a top-five pick after Sunday’s loss. That’s a good prize for an organization that deserves little after spending $40 million on Daniel Jones after one fluke season.

New York Giants QB Tyrod Taylor laments failed two-point conversion

The New York Giants suffered a one-point loss to the Los Angeles Rams at MetLife Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

The loss could have — or should have — been a win as the Giants blew the two-point conversion try after Gunner Olszewski’s 94-yard punt return for a touchdown drew them to within a point of the Rams, 26-25, with less than four minutes remaining in the fourth quarter.

With his kicking operation faltering, head coach Brian Daboll decided to go for the win on a two-point conversion. Quarterback Tyrod Taylor took the snap and rolled out right. He saw a wide-open Saquon Barkley cutting across the one-yard line. Taylor’s pass was thrown behind Barkley and fell to the turf incomplete.

“Obviously, lack of execution and it started with me,” Taylor told reporters after the game.

“Saquon was open … I kind of got caught in between running it and throwing it and then didn’t do either one of them. I got to be better. It’s a routine throw, something I’ve hit plenty of times before but yeah that moment I didn’t execute.”

Taylor had a fine game, otherwise. He even got the Giants back into position to win after missing that throw, only to have kicker Mason Crosby miss a 54-yard field goal attempt with 34 seconds remaining.

But it was the curious play calling on that final drive that had many scratching their heads. Taylor had gotten the Giants down to the Rams’ 34 after a 31-yard scramble and then spiked the ball to stop the clock with 43 seconds remaining.

The Giants, with no time-outs and seeking to get closer for a winning field goal attempt, decided to run the football up the middle with Barkley. He was stopped two yards in the backfield pushing the Giants further back.

“We called a draw play; thought we could get some extra yardage in that situation,” said Taylor. “Ultimately, they ran a stunt and was able to be better than us in that moment.”

Taylor then threw an incomplete pass to Wan’Dale Robinson which set up the 54-yard attempt by Crosby, who hooked the ball left, and the Giants were done.

New York Giants fear Tyre Phillips suffered torn quad

New York Giants quarterback Tyrod Taylor frantically called trainers out onto the field before taking a knee next to his teammate, offensive lineman Tyre Phillips.

Taylor’s reaction told the whole story. Even before cameras shifted to Phillips writhing in pain, it was abundantly clear something bad had happened.

As more Giants, many pale in the face, kneeled next to their fallen teammate, the severity of the situation began to set in. Then out came the cart, which scooped up and whisked an emotional Phillips away.

The usually tight-lipped Brian Daboll acknowledged after the game that Phillips was in a bad way.

“I don’t think it’s good. He was hurting pretty good,” Daboll told reporters. “I mean, but it’s a knee. I know that. He was in a lot of pain out there, but I haven’t talked to the doctors.”

Phillips had injured his knee earlier in the game, having it wrapped and put in a brace before returning. But the second time he went down, it looked like something else — something far more serious.

NFL Insider Jordan Schultz reports that the Giants fear Phillips suffered a torn quad that will require surgery.

“We working so hard for some injuries to happen but we play a sport that has injuries. Just got to trust God. Got to trust him through it all,” told The Athletic after the game.

Phillips will head for an MRI on Monday, likely at the Hospital for Special Surgery in Manhattan, to confirm. Swift surgery is likely.

Phillips appeared in nine games this season with eight starts at right tackle, replacing second-year offensive lineman Evan Neal, who was lost for the season with a broken ankle. He, too, will need surgery.

Giants can’t overcome self-inflicted wounds, fall to Rams, 26-25

With rookie cornerback Deonte Banks (shoulder) out, Nick McCloud got the start.

Saquon Barkley went into the medical tent in the second quarter but returned the following possession.

Right tackle Tyre Phillips injured his left leg in the first series of the game and left the field to be evaluated. He was replaced by Matt Peart and returned on the Giants’ next possession. Phillips was knocked out of the game for good with a knee injury in the second half.

Safety Jason Pinnock limped off the field in the first quarter with an ankle injury and headed toward the locker room. Dane Belton came in for him. Pinnock was ruled out for the rest of the game in the second quarter.

New York Giants fall to Los Angeles Rams, 26-25: Here’s how X reacted

The New York Giants hosted the Los Angeles Rams in their Week 17 matchup as the end of the season inches closer.

The Giants turned to Tyrod Taylor with hopes of ending to their two-game losing streak against one of the hottest teams in the NFL with the Rams winning five of their last six games.

In a back-and-forth game, the Giants were able to keep pace with the Rams thanks to three takeaways (two interceptions, one fumble recovery) by Dane Belton.

Unfortunately, this was yet another game where the Giants beat themselves with dropped passes, missed throws, a missed extra point and field goal, and a number of crucial holding penalties that negated big plays.

The Giants dropped to 5-11 heading into the final week of the season with many looking ahead to the 2024 NFL draft.

Here is how X, formerly known as Twitter, reacted to the loss.

Giants place Lawrence Cager on IR, add Darrian Beavers to active roster

The New York Giants have placed tight end Lawrence Cager on season-ending injured reserve (IR) with a groin issue. He had previously been listed as doubtful to play on Sunday against the Los Angeles Rams.

Taking Cager’s place on the 53-man roster is second-year linebacker Darrian Beavers, who was signed from the team’s practice squad.

The Giants selected Beavers in the sixth round of the 2022 NFL draft but he suffered a torn ACL in the team’s second preseason game. He avoided starting this season on the physically unable to perform (PUP) list but was waived as a part of final cuts and then added to the practice squad.

If Beavers sees any snaps over the next two games, they will be his first during the regular season in his career.

Additionally, the Giants have also elevated kicker Mason Crosby and wide receiver Dennis Houston from their practice squad.

For Crosby, this will be his second elevation. He made his Giants debut last week, connecting on a 52-yard field goal while also converting both of his point after attempts.

For Houston, it will be his first elevation.
