Oppo, OnePlus, and Realme Phones to Gain Phone Link, Link to Windows Support, But There’s a Catch

Oppo smartphones will soon work better with PCs and laptops running on Microsoft’s Windows 11 and Windows 10 operating systems, thanks to the addition of support for Phone Link and Link to Windows. At the recently concluded 2023 Oppo Developers Conference, both companies announced that support for the two apps was coming to Oppo, OnePlus, and Realme phones. However, it appears that compatible handsets will require a software update to the latest version of ColorOS (Oppo), OxygenOS (OnePlus), and Realme UI (Realme) in order to access the features.

Microsoft’s Phone Link app was previously exclusive to the company’s Surface devices, and phones from Samsung and Honor, but the company’s support page has now been updated (via WindowsLatest) to include four new entries — Oppo Find series, Oppo Reno series, OnePlus series, and Realme series. Similarly, Microsoft’s Link to Windows documentation has also been updated to include the same entries.

The support page does not list specific smartphone models, while several from Samsung and Honor are included under different sections. Several Samsung’s smartphones are also listed under a RCS messaging section, but phones from the three Chinese OEMs are not included in this list.

According to Microsoft’s support page, the Oppo Find series, Oppo Reno series, OnePlus series, and Realme series will support Phone Link, Link to Windows, Phone screen (remotely displaying your phone screen), and Apps (allowing you to mirror apps running on your smartphone). Samsung phone users can also sync their clipboard, quickly share files and view images from their camera roll, pick up phone calls, answer texts — without reaching for their phone.

However, just like Samsung phones, owners of Oppo, OnePlus, and Realme phones will have to wait for a software update that adds Phone Link support. As the features were announced alongside ColorOS 14, Oppo Find and Oppo Reno series owners are expected to get support for the feature when the update arrives, while OnePlus and Realme phones will have to wait for OxygenOS 14 and Realme UI 5.

Microsoft Copilot With Generative AI Features Coming to Windows 10: All You Need to Know

Microsoft Copilot — the company’s artificial intelligence (AI) assistant available on Windows 11 computers — is making its way to Windows 10. At its annual Microsoft Ignite 2023 developer conference, the company revealed that it was releasing Copilot (previously referred to as Bing Chat) in the Release Preview channel to Windows Insiders, which means the assistant will soon be available to users running on older computers that are not compatible with the latest version of Windows due to hardware constraints.

On Thursday, the company announced via a Windows Insider blog post that its Microsoft Copilot generative AI assistant is making its way to Windows 10 computers. The feature will soon be in preview, which means that users running on Windows Insiders preview builds will be the first to gain access to the feature. The same features will be available to users on Windows 10 version 22H2 at a later date, according to the company.

In order to get the Copilot features on Windows 10 computers as soon as it is rolled out, users will have to modify a Windows Update setting, according to the company. In order to ensure that you have the latest optional (non-security) updates on the latest Release Preview channel, you can follow the steps outlined by the company.

Click on the Start button and click on the gear icon to open the settings app. Select Update & Security > Windows Update > toggle the Get the latest updates as soon as they’re available option. You can then click Check for updates to verify that you have the latest version of Windows for your computer.

Microsoft reiterated that the end-of-life date for Windows 10 remains the same — support for the previous-generation operating system will end on October 14, 2025. Users who are running on Windows 10 version 22H2 can expect to see the generative AI assistant eventually roll out to their computer after it is tested on the Windows Insiders Release Preview channel.

Windows 11 Now Running on Over 400 Million Monthly Active Devices: Report

Microsoft unveiled Windows 11 in 2021, and since then, the tech major has released several significant updates and new features to the operating system. A media report has now revealed that Windows 11 is powering more than 400 million monthly active devices. The latest operating system is said to reach 500 million active devices by 2024. This is a significantly slower adoption rate than the old Windows 10. Windows 11 touched 400 million active devices just over a year after its release.

A report by Windows Central, citing Microsoft’s internal data, states that Windows 11 is now in use on over 400 million monthly active devices and it will hit 500 million monthly active devices by early 2024. The adoption pace of Windows 11 seems to be notably slower than Windows 10. However, the report notes that Microsoft has set a “modest” expectation for the Windows 11 usage base and the company has consistently blown past these internal goals. Windows 11 has been reportedly more successful than the company expected from a user-base standpoint.

Windows 11 was unveiled in July 2021 with notable design changes including a new boot screen, startup sound, and upgraded widgets. Microsoft took two years to reach 400 million monthly active devices with Windows 11, whereas Windows 10, which debuted in June 2015, hit 400 million monthly active devices in just over a year. It reached 1 billion users by early 2020.

Windows 10 was introduced as a limited free upgrade from Windows 7 and Windows 8. Windows 11 operating system on the other hand was only supported on CPUs released from 2018 onwards due to the Trusted Platform Module (TPM) requirement. The sluggish adoption rate of the Windows 11 can be attributed to these strict hardware requirements.

Windows 11 received a couple of updates in recent months. The tech giant added its AI personal assistant, Copilot, to the operating system. Microsoft’s Windows 12 is expected to be released in 2024 as the next major Windows operating system.

Windows 10 Feature Updates Discontinued by Microsoft Ahead of End of Support in 2025

Windows 10 feature updates have been discontinued by Microsoft, two years before the firm ends support for the eight-year-old operating system. The tech giant made the announcement via its Windows 10 product page on Thursday. Microsoft is set to end all software support for Windows 10 in October 2025. Until then, users will continue to receive security updates. The Windows 10 22H2 version is the last feature update of the operating system. The tech giant launched the Windows 11 in October 2021 and has since been encouraging users to upgrade to Windows 11.

According to the details shared on the Windows 10 product page on Microsoft’s website, the operating system will not get any further feature updates. This means the 2H22 version is the last OS update for users on Windows 10. Users will, however, continue to receive security updates until Microsoft ends support for Windows 10 on October 14, 2025. Users have also been advised to move to Windows 11 soon or update Windows 10 to its latest 22H2 version in order to continue receiving security updates and stay safe from malware and spyware.

Additionally, the company also announced it will release the next Windows long-term servicing channel (LTSC) release in the second half of 2024. The LTSC version of Windows 10 will continue to receive updates after the October 2025 deadline for regular Windows 10 installations.

Windows 10 was released by Microsoft in 2015. The company first announced it would end support for the OS in June 2021, before it introduced Windows 11, which arrived in October 2021 with a massive redesign including an all-new boot screen, startup sound, centrally-located Start menu, and upgraded widgets. It also has an improved touch keyboard that includes GIFs integration in partnership with Tenor.

Earlier this year, Microsoft announced it wouuld discontinue the sale of its Windows 10 Home and Pro downloads from January 31. It has stopped the sale of Windows 10 downloads and its license keys. However, it wasn’t clear whether Windows 10 downloads and license keys will continue to remain accessible via third-party retailers like Amazon.

Steam Is Ending Support for Windows 7, 8, and 8.1 in January 2024: Details

Valve is ending Steam support on some older editions of Windows. Starting January 1, 2024, Steam will cease to function on Windows 7, Windows 8, and Windows 8.1 operating systems. The official blog post reads, “The newest features in Steam rely on an embedded version of Google Chrome, which no longer functions on older versions of Windows.” Furthermore, future versions of Steam will rely on features and security updates that are present only in Windows 10 and beyond. With Microsoft itself halting support for those versions earlier this year, it was only a matter of time before others such as Steam followed suit.

As per Valve’s February Hardware and Software Survey, only 0.09 percent of players use a Windows 7 system, with an additional 1.43 percent running Steam on the 64-bit version. Only 0.34 percent of players take up the Windows 8.1 slot, while Windows 10 constitutes the largest amount of players — 62.33 percent. Meanwhile, 32.06 percent of players run Steam on the new Windows 11, coming in second place. Using Steam and any games purchased through the app from 2024 onwards will require users to update to a recent version of Windows. While any PC running Windows 7 can be upgraded to Windows 10 without hassle, moving to Windows 11 requires a TPM 2.0 setting for security reasons. This can be enabled through your motherboard’s BIOS settings.

Earlier this month, Fortnite dropped support for Windows 7 and 8, citing security concerns as well as the implementation of Unreal Engine 5.1. For those unable to upgrade, game streaming via Nvidia GeForce Now was mentioned as an alternative.

On a different note, Dolphin Emulator, the go-to app for playing Nintendo Wii and GameCube games on PC, will soon be available on Steam. A store page for the emulator is now live, featuring an option to wishlist it and plans to release sometime in Q2 2023.

“When we launch on Steam, we’ll have a feature article detailing the process and features of the Steam release,” the Dolphin blog post reads. “We’re pleased to finally tell the world of our experiment. This has been the product of many months of work, and we look forward to getting it into users’ hands soon!” the post continues. The Steam page also notes ‘Partial Controller Support’ for the Dolphin Emulator, alongside a promise for cloud saves. When ready, it will be launched in Early Access, as the developers continue gathering data for a streamlined experience later down the line.

In February, Steam unveiled its entire Sales and Fests scheduled for 2023, allowing users to mark their calendars and plan out their game shopping spree. Last year, the company also updated its regional pricing tool, setting higher recommended game costs for countries outside the US. According to that chart, default PC game prices in India could increase by up to 85 percent, provided the developers accept those increments and make changes to the base prices of their games.

As stated before, Steam support for Windows 7, 8, and 8.1 ends on January 1, 2024.

Microsoft to Introduce Some Windows 11 Features in Windows 10: Report

Microsoft is reportedly bringing the printing capabilities from Windows 11 to Windows 10. The new printing feature is said to introduce the option to add a PIN to a print job. This step is said to be added to avoid duplicate connections and incorrect printouts. The update is said to be part of the Windows 10 version 22H2 update. It was reported last month that Microsoft is switching to a new development schedule for Windows. Windows 11 was also reportedly said to be getting a feature called ‘Privacy Auditing’ that will help users look at the apps accessing their microphone, camera, and location data.

According to a recent report by Windows Latest, Microsoft is bringing the printing capabilities of Windows 11 to Windows 10, as a part of its Windows 10 version 22H2 update. This is said to include features that were exclusive to Windows 11, including the option to add a PIN to a print job. This feature is expected to help to avoid duplicate connections as well as incorrect printouts.

As mentioned earlier, Microsoft was reportedly switching to a new development schedule for Windows operating system. It is expected that the company is going back to its traditional three-year cycle, which could mean that the next major version might get released in 2024. This version could be Windows 12 if the company chooses to stick with its current naming trend, as per the report. Microsoft is also expected to double down on releasing new features for the current version of Windows.

To recall, Windows 11 was also reportedly said to be getting a feature called ‘Privacy Auditing’ that will help users look at apps accessing their microphone, camera, and location data. Microsoft had initially introduced the feature to app developers for testing. However, it will be available to Windows 11 users in the future to let them decide whether they should continue to use the apps that are tracking their sensitive data on the system.

Skull and Bones Release Date Set for November 8, Gameplay Trailer Out

Skull and Bones release date is here. On Thursday, Ubisoft announced as part of Ubisoft Forward event that the upcoming action-adventure game Skull and Bones will be out November 8 for Amazon Luna, Google Stadia, PlayStation 5, Windows PC — where it will be available via Epic Games Store and Ubisoft Store — and Xbox Series S/X. The game developer also shared the official Skull and Bones gameplay trailer to give fans an idea of what to expect from its latest offering. The trailer begins with a voiceover from a female character that introduces us to the game’s world, stating that this adventure takes place in the “golden age of piracy”.

We are then told what is in store for our character as he gears up for a journey where “preparation is the key to success”. The voiceover is, unsurprisingly, accompanied by some intense visuals, which are not suitable for the fainted-hearted. Going by the trailer, Skull and Bones has the potential to be a treat for those fond of the adventure genre.

Skull and Bones lets you play as a rookie pirate who tries to go from an outcast to a kingpin through his naval conquests. During this journey, he tries to deal with traitors and menacing foes. Players can play alongside up to two friends and additionally opt for PVP format. Skull and Bones’ Premium Edition will offer “The Ballad of Bloody Bones Collection”, which includes a range of cosmetics items for both Captain and Ships. This also grants one access to two extra missions and a Digital Art Book.

Originally announced at E3 2017, Skull and Bones was to be a 2019 release but that didn’t happen as it was pushed back to 2020. The game was further delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

An alleged leaked Xbox Store listing had earlier correctly revealed the November 8 Skull and Bones release date. Following this, Ubisoft announced that the gameplay trailer would be revealed on Thursday at the Ubisoft Forward event.

Skull and Bones is finally set to release November 8 on Amazon Luna, Google Stadia, PlayStation 5, Windows PC, and Xbox Series S/X.

Persona 3 Portable, Persona 4 Golden, Persona 5 Royal Coming to Xbox Game Pass

Persona 3 Portable, Persona 4 Golden, and Persona 5 Royal are heading to Xbox Game Pass, Japanese game developer Atlus revealed during the Xbox & Bethesda Games Showcase 2022. They will also be available on Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One, and Windows PCs. Persona 5 will be available on October 21, while the other games will be out in 2023 on yet-to-be-announced release dates. Persona 3 Portable is the most notable of the three ports, mainly because it hasn’t been all that easily available over the years. Its legacy further makes it a sought after title.

Originally launched in 2006 for PS2, Persona 3 is credited for popularising the franchise in the US. It introduced concepts such as a daily calendar, which paved the way for its successors. It was last released for PSP as Persona 3 Portable, which marked the only time the series allowed you to play as a female protagonist.

This will be the first time for Persona 3, Persona 4, and Persona 5 on Xbox. When it was released on PC in 2020, Persona 4 Golden proved to be a surprise hit among gamers.

Persona 5 Royal, the most recent entry into the mainline series, added a new dimension to the Persona 5 universe as its protagonist Joker appeared on Super Smash Bros. Ultimate as a fighter. It will be worth watching if it is able to work its magic on Xbox.

All three Persona games revolved around three Japanese teenagers, who vanquish demons while trying to deal with challenges such as academic examinations and personal romances. The series became quite popular in the US due to its critically-acclaimed art and soundtrack, which helped it sell 15 million units worldwide.

Persona 5 Royal comes to Xbox on October 21 while Persona 3 Portable and Persona 4 Golden will be available sometime next year.
